Objective : To compare the effects of a modified-fat diet high in monounsaturated fat, and a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet on arterial elasticity.
Design : Randomized crossover design; each diet period was 1 month and a 2-week wash out period occurred in between.
Subjects/setting : Thirty healthy, free-living, nonsmoking men and women were recruited from the Melbourne, Australia, metropolitan region of Australia. Men were aged 35 to 55 years and postmenopausal women were aged 50 to 60 years and were not taking hormone replacement therapy. Twenty-eight subjects completed the study.
Intervention : Two diets of equal energy value: a modified-fat diet and a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet; the modified-fat diet had 3 times more energy from monounsaturated fat.
Main outcome measures : Arterial elasticity and serum lipoprotein concentrations.
Statistical analysis : The general linear model was used to investigate overall effect and any carryover or order effects. Paired t test and the general linear model were used to compare the results from the 2 diet periods.
Results : High-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration was significantly higher on the modified-fat diet than on the low-fat/low-carbohydrate diet. Arterial elasticity and concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were not significantly different on the 2 diets.
Applications/conclusions : There is no evidence to favor a diet high in monounsaturated fat over a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet because of an effect on arterial elasticity. Other changes in diet may be needed to cause a beneficial effect on arterial elasticity.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine perceived barriers to physical activity among adults with and without abnormal glucose metabolism (AGM), and whether barriers varied according to physical activity status.
Methods The 1999 to 2000 Australian Diabetes, Obesity, and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab) was a population-based cross-sectional study among adults aged ≥25 years. AGM was identified through an oral glucose tolerance test. The previous week’s physical activity and individual, social, and environmental barriers to physical activity were self-reported. Logistic regression analyses examined differences in barriers to physical activity between those with and without AGM, and for those with and without AGM who did and did not meet the minimum recommendation of 150 minutes/week of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity.
Results Of the 7088 participants (47.5 ± 12.7 years; 46% male), 18.5% had AGM. Approximately 47.5% of those with AGM met the physical activity recommendation, compared to 54.7% of those without AGM (P < .001). Key barriers to physical activity included lack of time, other priorities, and being tired. Following adjustment for sociodemographic and behavioral factors, there were few differences in barriers to physical activity between those with and without AGM, even after stratifying according to physical activity.
Conclusions Adults with AGM report similar barriers to physical activity, as do those without AGM. Programs for those with AGM can therefore focus on the known generic adult-reported barriers to physical activity.

This thesis found that the omega-3 fatty acid, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) down-regulates the expression levels of key lipogenic genes and proteins in vitro. In vivo studies with labelled DPA showed that, like docosahexaenoic acid, DPA is more conserved from oxidation compared with eicosapentaenoic acid.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of creatine supplementation (CrS) on sprint exercise performance and skeletal muscle anaerobic metabolism during and after sprint exercise. Eight active, untrained men performed a 20-s maximal sprint on an air-braked cycle ergometer after 5 days of CrS [30 g creatine (Cr) + 30 g dextrose per day] or placebo (30 g dextrose per day). The trials were separated by 4 wk, and a double-blind crossover design was used. Muscle and blood samples were obtained at rest, immediately after exercise, and after 2 min of passive recovery. CrS increased the muscle total Cr content (9.5 ± 2.0%, P < 0.05, mean ± SE); however, 20-s sprint performance was not improved by CrS. Similarly, the magnitude of the degradation or accumulation of muscle (e.g., adenine nucleotides, phosphocreatine, inosine 5′-monophosphate, lactate, and glycogen) and plasma metabolites (e.g., lactate, hypoxanthine, and ammonia/ammonium) were also unaffected by CrS during exercise or recovery. These data demonstrated that CrS increased muscle total Cr content, but the increase did not induce an improved sprint exercise performance or alterations in anaerobic muscle metabolism.

The aim of this chapter is to highlight potential links between leptin and the lipid metabolism in fish, within the context of current research interests of the fish nutrition amd aquaculture sector. In fact, it is envisaged that the whole aquacuture and fish biology sector will significantly benefit from an increased knowledge of such a powerful hormone, and it is believed this will contribute in transforming current aquaculture industry into an environmental and economical means of producing nourishing fish and seafood for the growing global population. The context is framed by a brief introduction on the current challenges in aquaculture and fish nutrition, and susequently the chapter focuses on the potential roles of leptin on voluntary food intake and lipid digestion and absorption in fish. Following this, the possible roles of leptin on lipid deposition and utilisation and the fatty acid metabolism in fish are presented and discussed. Eventually the possible interrelationships between dietary lipids and leptin are analysed underlining how knowledge gained from human nutrition could be extremely useful to tentatively address current constraints and obstacles found in the aquaculture nutrition sector. The present analysis suggests that we are likely only able to see the tip of the iceberg, and great and significant breakthrough discoveries will be likely by fathoming such fascinating area of research.

While elite Olympic distance triathletes consume adequate carbohydrate pre-competition, many fail to meet suggested guidelines during actual competition. Furthermore, metabolic adaptations that occur in response to training appear similar under varying conditions of carbohydrate availability. However, daily training with high carbohydrate availability increases the use of carbohydrate consumed during exercise.

Life-history data for 63 species from the mammalian order Insectivora have been collated from the literature. These data were analysed for covariation and for correlations with body mass, brain mass and mass-specific resting metabolic rate. An independent contrasts method has been used to remove the effect of phylogeny. Due to uncertainties surrounding their evolutionary relationships, 22 different phylogenies of insectivores have been used as a basis for comparative analysis. The results show that several key correlations between life-history variables are only significant when certain phylogenies are used, highlighting the problems of such analyses when the phylogeny used is inaccurate. After removing the effect of phylogeny, relatively few significant correlations remain. Insectivores that have a high body mass have relatively lower metabolic rates, longer lifespans and longer gestation lengths. There is some support for a fast±slow continuum in insectivore life-history evolution: there are some significant positive correlations between measures of growth rates (e.g. gestation length and age at weaning) and lifespan, and some negative correlations between growth rates and measures of reproductive output. It is suggested that the seasonality of life of many insectivores may have played an influential role in the evolution of the group, in particular in delaying the onset of sexual maturity. There is little indication that brain size influences life-history evolution in this order, but metabolism may play an important role. The energetic requirements of maintaining high metabolic rates in small mammals such as insectivores may be constraining life histories to a greater extent than occurs in larger mammals. This effect may have obscured the relationship between metabolic rate and life histories in wider inter-order analyses. Finally, there is considerable evidence that sex differences play a large role in shaping insectivore evolution, and it is suggested that this factor must be considered more often in future studies of mammalian life histories in general.
