Based on the thermo-mechanical controlled process, the effects of Si on microstructural evolution, tensile properties, impact toughness, and stretch-flangeability of ferrite and bainite dual-phase (FBDP) steels were systematically investigated. The addition of Si from 0 to 0.95% promoted the formation of fine and equiaxed ferrite grains, and high Si (0.95%) also resulted in the formation of blocky martensite islands and retained austenite. Yield and tensile strengths, and uniform and total elongations all increased with increasing Si content. Therefore, the tensile strength and ductility balance was improved by Si addition due to the increasing strain-hardening rate. The fractured morphologies after hole-expansion showed that the excellent stretch-flangeability of FBDP steels was associated with the micro-cracks propagating through in ferrite phase as well as the elongated ferrite grains along the direction perpendicular to the crack. 0.95% Si steel had a similar high combination of tensile strength and impact toughness to 0.55% Si steel, and especially 0.95% Si steel exhibited an excellent combination of tensile strength and stretch-flangeability.

Paint baking treatment was carried out in a silicon oil bath at 170 °C for 20 min for Si-Al-Mn TRIP Steel sheet with different prestrains, and effect of prestrain on microstructures and properties was studied before and after baking. The results show that with the increasing of prestrain amount during prestraining and baking, the volume fraction of retained austenite decreases, and the volume fraction of martensite and bainite increases as well as yield strength increases; as prestrain ranges from 0 to 4%, the baking-hardening (BH) value increases; while the prestrain ranges from 4% to 16%, the BH value decreases; when the prestrain amount is 4%, the highest BH value is about 70 MPa for Si-Al-Mn TRIP steel sheet with niobium, which displays excellent baking-hardening behavior.

Low cost ferrite and bainite(FB) steels offer the prospect of high ultimate tensile strength combined with high hole expansion ratio. The enhanced strain hardening and formabilityof FB steels were primarily associated with the fine ferrite matrix, the low residual stresses and dislocation densityand compatible deformation between both phases. This overview describes the various techniques to produce FB steels, and comparestheresulting microstructure, tensile propertiesand tretchflangeabilitywith conventional HSLA and DP steels.A new generation of ultrafine ferrite and nano-scalebainiteautomotive steelsisunder development forthe futuredemands of extremely high strength and ductilitythroughthe fabricationtechnologiesinvolvingphase transformationsandplastic deformation.

The commercial magnesium alloy AZ31 has been subjected to a range of solution treatment regimes. These have then been extruded and their microstructure, texture, and precipitate populations characterized along with their mechanical properties. During the solution treatment, Mn-enriched particles develop and these remain largely unchanged throughout subsequent processing steps. A direct link between grain size and texture has been found, with coarser-grained specimens showing sharper textures. VPSC modeling has been used to quantify the effect of texture on the tensile yield strength, and it has been found that sharper textures have larger tensile yield strengths. Since coarser grain sizes have reduced Hall–Petch hardening, but have an additional texture-strengthening component, a region on the Hall–Petch plot for tension has been identified in which there is an insensitivity of strength to grain size. This has been quantitatively modeled and a texture-modified Hall–Petch plot for tension has been developed. The Mn-rich particles have also been shown to provide precipitate strengthening to the alloy of up to 40 MPa. The compressive behavior was clearer, with the compressive yield strength being directly correlated to grain size and unaffected by texture or precipitation hardening.

During the hot working of austenitic stainless steels the shape of the flow curve is strongly influenced by the strain rate. Low strain rate deformation results in flow curves typical of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) but as the strain rate increases the shape changes to a ‘flat-top’ curve. This has traditionally been thought to indicate no DRX is taking place and that dynamic recovery (DRV) is the only operating softening mechanism. Examining the work-hardening behaviour and corresponding deformation microstructures showed this is not the case for austenitic stainless steel, as clear evidence of dynamic recrystallization process can be seen. The post-deformation recrystallization kinetics can be modelled using a standard Avrami equation with an Avrami exponent, n, of 1.15. With an increasing value of the Zener-Hollomon parameter it was found that the kinetics of recrystallization become less strain rate sensitive until at the highest values (highest strain rates/lowest temperatures) the recrystallization kinetics become strain rate insensitive.

A partial differential equation is developed that captures the evolution of key characteristics of tensile twinning in magnesium base alloys. The objective is to provide a framework for ascertaining the effects of hardening – due to grain refinement, precipitation and dislocation substructure – on twin volume fraction, thickness and length. The model is developed with the help of observations made on alloy AZ31. It is shown that it is necessary to consider the nucleation of twins at locations where neighbouring twins impinge on the grain boundary. The model provides a reasonable approximation for the role of grain size on twinning. It predicts a period of low apparent work hardening following yielding and shows that this should be more extensive for finer grain sizes, in agreement with experiment. Finally, some predictions are made on the effect of changing the resistance to twinning.

In the present study, copper-bearing low carbon steels were produced by direct strip casting (DSC) method on a pilot scale. The effects of copper on mechanical, microstructural, and recrystallization behavior were investigated. As-cast microstructure mainly consists of polygonal ferrite and Widmanstatten ferrite. The increase in Cu increases the amount of Widmanstatten ferrite and induces the formation of bainite in the as-cast condition. It was found that copper increases strength and hardness by solid solution strengthening, grain refinement, and precipitation hardening and the increment is significant above 1% Cu in as-cast condition. Six different compositions were selected for recrystallization study. All the samples were cold rolled to 70% reduction and annealed at three different temperatures, 600, 650, and 700°C for various times. Recrystallization responses were strongly dependent on initial microstructure and Cu content and the effect is dramatic between 1 and 2% Cu. Recrystallization time and temperature were found to be increased with increase in copper content.

The long-standing Patani Muslim separatist resistance of Southern Thailand is not one that is well known, and its contemporaneous spill over onto the Internet even less so. The more radical Patani online propaganda is in fact symptomatic of the relocation of the struggle within the sphere of influence of global jihadism, distancing itself from the ethno-nationalism characteristic of a previous generation of fighters. New media propaganda, in particular Jihad 2.0, has opened a new sphere of influence to the Patani neojihadist movement, allowing the militants to expand their propaganda campaign to a wider audience, while reaching out to a younger Melayu public. While Jihad 2.0 has presented the resistance movement with new ways to diffuse its message, in a more innovative and appealing manner, it also has enabled it to engage with its audiences more interactively. Because the message is no longer linear, anyone can contribute to the dialectics of the struggle, which in fine results in the alteration and reshaping of its ideological discourse in unprecedented directions. Arguably the ‘glocalisation’ of Islamophobia within Thai culture has resulted in the alteration of the Thai cultural stereotype of the Muslim khaek ‘Other’, transforming the khaek into an evil violent Muslim, both in real and virtual worlds. This further leads to discriminatory attitudes and behaviours towards Muslims, which causes the hardening of the views of the online Patani community of support towards the Thais and possibly its radicalisation.
