Co-operative learning in leadership education

Thailand is undergoing a period of major educational reform. Drawing on Thai and Australian experiences, ways of assisting school leaders to develop more collaborative methods of decision-making in Thai schools are investigated. The thesis reports a number of innovative techniques which are shown to work effectively in professional development programs for Thai school leaders.

Adult learning experience : learning in mixed-mode forms of professional development in the Northern Territory of Australia

This qualitative research is an examination of the experience of learning within a mixed-mode teachers' professional development program. It examines how learning is affected by 'location' - geographic, institutional and personal, and how teaching may take location into account. Approaches to study, influences on learning and transformational learning are explored.

Constructing emergent literacy : negotiating literacy technologies in preschool-school transition

Examines conflicting views about early literacy in homes, Preschools and schools as interactive technologies challenge traditional print-based literacies. The research found that significant differences between children's multimodal literacies and versions of emergent policies, may threaten successful literacy acquisition.

School-based materials for critical reading in English

This research aims to examine Thai students' critical thinking ability in reading English by using materials developed by a research team using a collaborative action research methodology. Initially, a survey of self-percpetions of Thai secondary students on their critical thinking ability was conducted. Then, two Thai teachers were interviewed about their materials and methodology in teaching students to read critically. Lastly, a literature of critical literacy was reviewed to introduce the notions to Thai teachers and Thai students.

Thinking at the limits

Science education has remained relatively silent on the contemporary forces currently shaping its form. This thesis uses postcolonial theory to extend beyond science education's traditional research areas and explore how globalisation has influenced its recent policies and practices, and its growing interest in sociocultural issues.

Improving the practicum through collaborative action

Using international concepts of best practice, the research showed that Thai student teacher's practicum is enhanced if there are systematic and sustained opportunities to participate in reflective discussion with peers and lecturers. The research used the Buddhist concept of Kalayanamitr as a metaphor for the relationship between professional practice and reflection on that practice. This research sets new directions for teacher education and educational research in Thailand.

Montessori education : yesterday, today, tomorrow

Montessori education is as relevant today as it was when devised in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952). This thesis first identifies the conceptual parameters of Montessori Education, and second, offers an explanation for its survival.

Holding Yawulyu : white culture and black women's law

Analyses the interaction between white and indigenous cultures, specifically the impact of the white practices of Christianisation, bureaucracy and commercialisation on indigenous women's cultural and religious practices, values and cosmology (Tjukurrpa), and argues that indigenous women's gynocentric cultural initiatives should be better resourced.

Language learning strategies of adult ESL learners using virtual independent learning environments

This case study explored the influence of the Virtual Independent Learning Centre on the preferred language learning strategies of adult immigrant English as a second language learners. Findings expand the understanding of English as a second language learners' use of language learning strategies within online independent learning environments.

The 're-skilling' of tertiary teachers for new learning environments

This thesis investigates three online professional development activities for university teachers and student support staff, conducted between 1994 and 1996. The key research question was: 'What can we realistically expect of teachers and participants in online learning?' The inquiry produced instruments of use in the evaluation of online teaching.

Fostering meaningful learning by using word problems in post-secondary mathematics

This research is a case study of action research investigating the effects of using word problems with Chinese Malaysian post-secondary students studying mathematics as an enabling science. A variety of word problems, a discussion method, reflective and peer learning, specific values in mathematics, and relevant socio-cultural and language issues were explored.

Non-formal education for women workers in Thai industry

This study focuses on non-formal education provision for women workers in industry in Thailand. It consists of a dissertation and four elective studies. The dissertation explored the possibilities to improve women workers' quality of life. The experience gained from the research formed the Participatory Approach Model called "PAM".

Emagining change : English teachers and technology

This textually playful study focuses on gaining a deeper understanding of teacher beliefs about English and the influence of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). Because English is in transformation, these insights into teachers' perpectives of their subject, technology and change will contribute to the productive rethinking of the profession. It employs narrative research, diaglogics and Actor Network Theory techniques.

Management of flexible learning in vocational education and training

This research shows that, to function effectively in a changing environment that includes the convergence of online learning and e-business, managers in the vocational education and training sector need an increasingly sophisticated conceptual framework and set of business skills that appropriately draw on contemporary business management theory and practice.

Leading a process of educational change in an Indonesian school

The thesis presents an autobiographical case study of a principal, with a focus on the various theoretical and experiential influences on the development of her understanding and practice of educational leadership in Australia and overseas. A close analysis is made of her current practice of educational leadership in Indonesia.
