Recommendation techniques based on off-line data processing: a multifaceted survey

Recommendations based on off-line data processing has attracted increasing attention from both research communities and IT industries. The recommendation techniques could be used to explore huge volumes of data, identify the items that users probably like, and translate the research results into real-world applications, etc. This paper surveys the recent progress in the research of recommendations based on off-line data processing, with emphasis on new techniques (such as context-based recommendation, temporal recommendation), and new features (such as serendipitous recommendation). Finally, we outline some existing challenges for future research.

Using a qualitative vignette to explore a complex public health issue

This article discusses how qualitative vignettes were combined with interviews to explore a complex public health issue; that is, promoting unhealthy foods and beverages to children and adolescents. It outlines how the technique was applied in practice and the combination of vignette-based interviews with a broader approach involving Gadamerian hermeneutics. Twenty-one participants from the public health community and the marketing and food and beverage industries took part in vignette-based interviews between March and September 2012. Overall, the qualitative vignette method afforded an efficient, generally well-received technique that effectively explored the issue of promoting unhealthy foods and beverages to children and adolescents. The vignette provided structure to interviews but allowed certain responses to be investigated in greater depth. Through this research, we argue that qualitative vignettes allow researchers to explore complex public health issues. This article also provides a valuable resource for researchers seeking to explore this technique.

A preliminary assessment of machinability of titanium alloy Ti 6Al 4V during thin wall machining using trochoidal milling

Titanium alloys are of great demand in the aerospace and biomedical industries. Most the titanium products are either cast or sintered to required shape and finish machined to get the appropriate surface texture to meet the design requirements. Ti-6Al-4V is often referred as work horse among the titanium alloys due to its heavy use in the aerospace industry. This paper is an attempt to investigate and improve the machining performance of Ti-6Al-4V. Thin wall machining is an advance machining technique especially used in machining turbine blades which can be done both in a conventional way and using a special technique known as trochoidal milling. The experimental design consists of conducting trials using combination of cutting parameters such as cutting speed (vc), 90 and 120 m/min; feed/tooth (fz) of 0.25 and 0.35 mm/min; step over (ae) 0.3 and 0.2; at constant depth of cut (ap) 20mm and using coolant. A preliminary assessment of machinability of Ti-6Al-4V during thin wall machining using trochoidal milling is done. A correlation established using cutting force, surface texture and dimensional accuracy.

Grain refinement in titanium alloys through thermomechanical processing

Qi developed a novel thermomechanical processing route for the grain refinement of titanium alloys. This leads to a well-balanced superior mechanical property, which is vital for modern air transport. The outcomes of this project are prospective to enhance titanium application and the long-term viability of Australian resources and manufacturing industries.

Are Indian stock returns predictable?

In this paper we show that Indian stock returns, based on industry portfolios, portfolios sorted on book-to-market, and on size, are predictable. While we discover that this predictability holds both in in-sample and out-of-sample tests, predictability is not homogenous. Some predictors are important than others and some industries and portfolios of stocks are more predictable and, therefore, more profitable than others. We also discover that a mean combination forecast approach delivers significant out-of-sample performance. Our results survive a battery of robustness tests.

Mycorrhizal elicitation of secondary metabolites in hairy roots of Ocimum basilicum

 Mycorrhiza, a symbiotic soil fungus was identified as a biotic elicitor of antioxidant compounds found in the plant roots. In vitro developed technique and bioresources carry potential towards formation of biological and biochemical factories for application in the agricultural and pharmaceutical industries.

Unhealthy food promotion to under 18s: deeper insights, new interpretations.

 This work explores unhealthy food and beverage promotion to children and adolescents with members of the marketing and food and beverage industries, and public health professionals. It identifies areas of partial agreement, while emphasizing that responses cannot be separated from contextual factors that influence the way stakeholders understand this issue.

Biotechnological applications of microbial bioconversions

Modern research has focused on the microbial transformation of a huge variety of organic compounds to obtain compounds of therapeutic and/or industrial interest. Microbial transformation is a useful tool for producing new compounds, as a consequence of the variety of reactions for natural products. This article describes the production of many important compounds by biotransformation. Emphasis is placed on reporting the metabolites that may be of special interest to the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, as well as the practical aspects of this work in the field of microbial transformations.

This paper surveys the recent progress in the research of recommendations based on offline data processing, with emphasis on new techniques (such as temporal recommendation, graph-based recommendation and trust-based recommendation), new features (such as serendipitous recommendation) and new research issues (such as tag recommendation and group recommendation). We also provide an extensive review of evaluation measurements, benchmark data sets and available open source tools. Finally, we outline some existing challenges for future research.
