Growing self-organizing map (GSOM) has been characterized as a knowledge discovery visualization application which outshines the traditional self-organizing map (SOM) due to its dynamic structure in which nodes can grow based on the input data. GSOM is utilized as a visualization tool in this paper to cluster fMRI finger tapping and non- tapping data, demonstrating the visualization capability to distinguish between tapping or non-tapping. A unique feature of GSOM is a parameter called the spread factor whose functionality is to control the spread of the GSOM map. By setting different levels of spread factor, different granularities of region of interests within tapping or non-tapping images can be visualized and analyzed. Euclidean distance based similarity calculation is used to quantify the visualized difference between tapping and non tapping images. Once the differences are identified, the spread factor is used to generate a more detailed view of those regions to provide a better visualization of the brain regions.

According to Rudolf Steiner, within the sensory world there exists a spiritual world that remains concealed from our consciousness to the extent that our perception is limited to our senses and sense bound thinking. He argued that ignorance of this supersensible realm was the result of a limited understanding of the senses. Rather than the usual five senses, Steiner differentiated twelve sense functions through which, he believed, human beings were capable of perceiving subtle dimensions of life beyond the immediately apparent physical realm of being. His theory of the senses elucidated the potentiality for an understanding of the way the spiritual world creates its image in the physical world and he saw artistic activity as a means of making this hidden union manifest. As such, Steiner advocated a multi-sensory architecture that articulated its spiritual presence experientially through an active engagement with its forms, colours, textures, light and sound. However, due to the esoteric overtones of Steiner's writing, his theory of the senses has received very little scholarly attention, particularly in relation to its relevance to architectural creation. This paper aims to peel back the layers of jargon and mysticism that Steiner employed in order to reveal how his unique insights into the nature of the senses informed his architectural products. Such an approach will provide a more comprehensive understanding of Steiner's distinctive architectural forms as well as the significant philosophical ideas that inform them.

Private-sector organizations play a critical role in shaping the food environments of individuals and populations. However, there is currently very limited independent monitoring of private-sector actions related to food environments. This paper reviews previous efforts to monitor the private sector in this area, and outlines a proposed approach to monitor private-sector policies and practices related to food environments, and their influence on obesity and non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. A step-wise approach to data collection is recommended, in which the first (‘minimal’) step is the collation of publicly available food and nutrition-related policies of selected private-sector organizations. The second (‘expanded’) step assesses the nutritional composition of each organization's products, their promotions to children, their labelling practices, and the accessibility, availability and affordability of their products. The third (‘optimal’) step includes data on other commercial activities that may influence food environments, such as political lobbying and corporate philanthropy. The proposed approach will be further developed and piloted in countries of varying size and income levels. There is potential for this approach to enable national and international benchmarking of private-sector policies and practices, and to inform efforts to hold the private sector to account for their role in obesity and NCD prevention.

Food and non-alcoholic beverage marketing is recognized as an important factor influencing food choices related to non-communicable diseases. The monitoring of populations' exposure to food and non-alcoholic beverage promotions, and the content of these promotions, is necessary to generate evidence to understand the extent of the problem, and to determine appropriate and effective policy responses. A review of studies measuring the nature and extent of exposure to food promotions was conducted to identify approaches to monitoring food promotions via dominant media platforms. A step-wise approach, comprising ‘minimal’, ‘expanded’ and ‘optimal’ monitoring activities, was designed. This approach can be used to assess the frequency and level of exposure of population groups (especially children) to food promotions, the persuasive power of techniques used in promotional communications (power of promotions) and the nutritional composition of promoted food products. Detailed procedures for data sampling, data collection and data analysis for a range of media types are presented, as well as quantifiable measurement indicators for assessing exposure to and power of food and non-alcoholic beverage promotions. The proposed framework supports the development of a consistent system for monitoring food and non-alcoholic beverage promotions for comparison between countries and over time.

Article focus<br />⪠This article is a protocol of a study that involves&nbsp;offering fragile X syndrome carrier screening to&nbsp;pregnant and non-pregnant women in the&nbsp;general population. We are undertaking a programme&nbsp;evaluation approach using mixed&nbsp;methods to collect data about informed decisionmaking&nbsp;and predictors of test uptake, with a&nbsp;focus on psychosocial measures. We are also&nbsp;undertaking an economic appraisal.<div><br />Key messages<br />⪠Carrier screening for fragile X syndrome is the&nbsp;subject of debate because of concerns around&nbsp;education and counselling for this complex condition<br />and the potential for psychosocial harms. <br />⪠This study will inform policy and practice in the&nbsp;area of population carrier screening by examining&nbsp;psychosocial aspects of screening, including&nbsp;informed decision-making; models of screening,&nbsp;through antenatal care or other access points&nbsp;and health economics of carrier screening for&nbsp;fragile X syndrome.<br /><br />Strengths and limitations of this study<br />⪠This study seeks to recruit 1000 women in total.&nbsp;This large sample size will give us sufficient&nbsp;power to address the aims of the study.<br />⪠Collecting quantitative and qualitative data will&nbsp;provide a more in-depth picture of screening for&nbsp;fragile X syndrome.<br />⪠A limitation of the study is that the data on&nbsp;models of screening may not be applicable to&nbsp;other countries that have different healthcare&nbsp;systems.</div>

Self-efficacy is a belief. It can encourage or hamper students from learning to their full potential. Students who are efficacious are more motivated, more persistent to meet their goals and are more likely to take learning risks. The research into the self-efficacy of students classified as verbally or non-verbally gifted is in its infancy. This book details a Doctoral dissertation that investigated the written English self-efficacy of adolescent students. Results identified verbally gifted students had higher written English self-efficacy, were more intrinsically motivated, had higher levels of creativity and wrote superior essays compared to non-verbally gifted and non-gifted students. Findings highlighted differences between gender as female student?s recorded higher self-efficacy and written English performance scores and interestingly, students from lower socio-economic backgrounds reported higher self-efficacy compared to students from higher socio-economic backgrounds. Pedagogical implications are considered with teachers encouraged to realise the impact of self-efficacy upon student learning, motivation and persistence regardless of their academic ability.
