In this paper, a five-level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters topology is applied on induction motor control known as direct torque control (DTC) strategy. More inverter states can be generated by a five-level inverter which improves voltage selection capability. This paper also introduces two different control methods to select the appropriate output voltage vector for reducing the torque and flux error to zero. The first is based on the conventional DTC scheme using a pair of hysteresis comparators and look up table to select the output voltage vector for controlling the torque and flux. The second is based on a new fuzzy logic controller using Sugeno as the inference method to select the output voltage vector by replacing the hysteresis comparators and lookup table in the conventional DTC, to which the results show more reduction in torque ripple and feasibility of smooth stator current. By using Matlab/Simulink, it is verified that using five-level inverter in DTC drive can reduce the torque ripple in comparison with conventional DTC, and further torque ripple reduction is obtained by applying fuzzy logic controller. The simulation results have also verified that using a fuzzy controller instead of a hysteresis controller has resulted in reduction in the flux ripples significantly as well as reduces the total harmonic distortion of the stator current to below 4 %.

In this paper, a distributed multi-agent scheme is presented for reactive power management with renewable energy sources (RESs). The multi-agent system (MAS) framework is developed for distribution systems to improve the stability which is mostly dominated by voltage and the agents in this framework coordinate among themselves using online information and energy flow. In this paper, the agents basically perform two tasks- reactive power estimation and necessary control actions. The topology of distribution network is used to estimate the required reactive power for maintaining voltage stability where distributed static synchronous compensators (DSTATCOMs) are used to supply this reactive power. The DSTATCOM is controlled by using a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller within the agent framework. The proposed scheme is further compared with the conventional approach to validate the simulation results.

This paper proposes a linear quadratic regulator with integral action, ensuring fast dynamic response and resisting capability of voltage deviation from instantaneous reference grid voltage, to control the inverter voltage that can also be used in a microgrid. The proposed control strategy is based on a linear quadratic regulator, minimizing the cost function of the system, with integral action used to impede voltage degradation from a reference voltage for outside disturbances of the system, such as abrupt load change. The combined integral term assists to recover the voltage difference between grid and reference grid voltage. The validity of the proposed controller has been tested with linear and non-linear loads under various conditions. In both cases, the effectiveness of the controller has been proved. The result of the proposed controller is good to track the instantaneous reference grid voltage.

This paper presents a low-actuation-voltage micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) capacitive shunt switch which has a very large bandwidth (4 GHz to 24 GHz). In this work, the isolation of MEMS switch is improved by adding two short high impedance transmission lines at the beginning and end of a coplanar waveguide (CPW). Simulating the switch demonstrates that a return loss (S11) is less than -26 dB for the entire frequency band, and perfect matching at 20 GHz in upstate position. A ramp dual pulse driver is also designed for reducing the capacitive charge injection for considering the reliability of the switch. The simulation results show that the shifting of voltage due to the capacitive charge is reduced by more than 35% of the initial value. Finally, the dynamic behavior of the MEMS switch is simulated by modal analysis and using CoventorWare to calculate the natural frequencies of the switch and its mode shapes. The switching ON and OFF time are 4.48 and 2.43 μs, respectively, with an actuation voltage of less than 15 V.

This paper presents the design and fabrication of an electrode for low-actuation-voltage electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices. The electrode which takes advantage of a novel shape is used to develop an EWOD device. The fabrication process for the electrode and the device development includes laser exposure, wet developing, etching, and stripping. A dielectric layer of 5% (wt./wt.) Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) is used for the electrode insulation. In addition, a very thin (50 nm) layer of Teflon is coated on the EWOD surface to provide hydrophobicity. It is observed that a thin and high dielectric-constant layer can reduce the actuation voltage in the EWOD device. An actuation voltage of 14.8 V was achieved by the EWOD device.

This paper proposes a power balancing strategy for dispatchable and non-dispatchable sources in an islanded microgrid. This control method enables energy storage system that employs a voltage-band at a dc busbar to maintain grid voltage stability for short period disturbances in a network. This voltage-band, applied to obtain maximum benefit from the storage system, depends on a storage capacity feature to avoid voltage limit violation. In addition, a linear quadratic regulator is employed as a voltage controller to track the reference grid voltage that is obtained from the proposed P/V droop control strategy. In the proposed control method, a long-term energy storage element, such as a battery, also can be used to regulate voltage and deliver insufficient power in a microgrid. It is concluded that the proposed control method exhibits an effective result in voltage and power issue during transient.

Through the conjunction of tetraphenylethylene and diketopyrrolopyrrole functionalities, a novel four-directional non-fullerene electron acceptor (denoted as 4D) was designed, synthesized and characterized. The new chromophore is highly soluble (for instance >30 mg mL(-1) in o-dichlorobenzene), thermally stable, and exhibits energy levels matching those of the conventional and routinely used donor polymer poly(3-hexyl thiophene). A power conversion efficiency of 3.86% was obtained in solution-processable bulk-heterojunction devices with a very high open circuit voltage of 1.18 V.

This paper presents an improved stability criterion for load frequency control (LFC) of time-delay power systems including AC/HVDC transmission links and EVs. By employing a novel refined Jensen-based inequality, an improved stability condition is derived in terms of feasible linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which allow us to compute the maximal upper bounds of time-delay ensuring stability of the LFC scheme equipped with an embedded controller. Cases studies here are implemented for LFC scheme of a two-area power system, which is interconnected by parallel (AC/HVDC) links, with embedded proportional integral (PI) controller for discharged EVs. The relationships between the parameters of PI controller, supplementary control of HVDC links and delay margins of the LFC scheme are also discussed. As a consequence of facts, the results of delay margins can be used as a guideline to tune PI controller and set-up parameters for HVDC control.

This paper presents design and fabrication of an electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) device using a novel electrode shape and a multi-layer dielectric coating that reduce the actuation voltage of the device to less than 12.6 V. The fabrication of the EWOD electrodes is carried out in several steps including laser exposure, wet developing, etching, and stripping. A high-dielectric-constant multi-layer dielectric coating containing a 770 nm thick Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) layer and a 1 µm thick Cyanoethyl pullulan (CEP) layer, is deposited on the EWOD electrodes for insulation. This multi-layer dielectric structure exhibits a high capacitance per unit area, and the novel electrode shape changes the actuation force at the droplet contact line reducing the voltage required to operate the device. In addition, an overlaying Teflon layer of 50 nm is placed on top of the dielectric structure to provide a hydrophobic surface for droplet manipulation. It is observed from the experiments that the electrode shape and the dielectric structure have contributed to the reduction of the actuation voltage of the EWOD device.

This paper presents a nonlinear controller design for a DSTATCOM connected to a distribution network with distributed generation (DG) to regulate the line voltage by providing reactive power compensation. The controller is designed based on the partial feedback linearization which transforms the nonlinear system into a reduced-order linear system and an autonomous system whose dynamics are known as internal dynamics of the system. This paper also investigates the stability of internal dynamics of a DSTATCOM as it is a basic requirement to design partial feedback linearizing controllers. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated in terms reactive power compensation to enhance the voltage stability of distribution with DG.
