INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Industry groups with vested interests in policy regularly work to protect their profits via the endorsement of ineffective voluntary regulation and interventions, extensive lobbying activity and minimising the health impact of consumption behaviours. This study aims to examine all alcohol industry submissions to the Australian House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs into Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), to assist in understanding how those with vested interests contribute to policy development. The analysis aims to document the strategies and arguments used by alcohol industry bodies in their submissions and to compare these with known strategies of vested-interest groups. DESIGN AND METHODS: All 92 submissions to the Inquiry were screened to include only those submitted by alcohol industry bodies (five submissions). Content domains were derived based on the major themes emerging from the industry submissions and on common vested-interest behaviours identified in previous literature. RESULTS: The following content categories were identified: Concerns about FASD; Current industry activities and FASD prevention; Value of mandatory warning labels; and Credibility of independent public health researchers and organisations. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol industry submissions sought to undermine community concern, debate the evidence, promote ineffective measure which are no threat to the profit margins and attack independent health professionals and researchers. In doing so, their behaviour is entirely consistent with their responses to other issues, such as violence and chronic health, and copies the tactics employed by the tobacco industry.

Deep brain stimulation to clinically relevant brain targets all produced therapeutic responses in an animal model of antidepressant resistance. Such effects were achieved by modulating cellular stress, impaired synaptic plasticity, dysregulated dopamine transmission and energy metabolism. The implication of these findings underscore the need for using appropriate animal models to gain valuable insight on the neurobiological state of the organism in health and disease.

The anti-inflammatory effect of a lipid extract from hard-shelled mussel (HMLE) on dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice was investigated. Salicylazosulphapyridine (SASP) and different doses of HMLE were administered by gastric gavage. HMLE significantly attenuated DSS-induced colitis disease activity index scores, tissue damage, splenic enlargement and colon myeloperoxidase accumulation. In addition, HMLE improved colon oxidative stress and production and expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin (IL)-10, while HMLE inhibited the abnormal productions and mRNA expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely tumour necrosis factor-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, as well as the expression of key molecules in the toll-like receptor (TLR)-4/nuclear factor (NF)-κB signalling pathway. These findings suggest that HMLE has an anti-inflammatory effect on DSS-induced colitis, equivalent to that of SASP, and this effect might be related to the regulation of inflammatory mediators and key molecules in the TLR-4/NF-κB pathway.

The nitriding mechanisms of conventional DC plasma treatments have been extensively studied and discussed, but no general agreement has been reached thus far. The sputtering and redeposition theory is among the most accepted ones but, even though this mechanism is feasible, its contribution to the nitriding effect is under question. Furthermore, the novel active screen plasma nitriding technique has been successful in treating samples left at floating potential, where sputtering can not be considered to play a major role. Therefore, it has been proposed that the material sputtered from the cathodic mesh of the active screen furnace (auxiliary cathode) and deposited onto the treated specimens is involved in the mass transfer of nitrogen. The contribution made by this transferred material is the focus of attention of the present study. The hardening effect on the treated specimens showed considerable correlation with the deposition layer, and the XRD analysis of this deposited material yielded possible FeN and FexN peaks. This finding supports the deposition of iron nitrides and their subsequent decomposition on the treated substrate as a mechanism of significance to the plasma nitriding treatments conducted in active screen experimental settings.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) includes a range of approaches that correlate with computer aided design (CAD) and manufacturing by fabrication via precise layers and is a promising method for the production of medical tools. In this study, different aspects and mechanisms of solidification for curved surfaces based on equilibrium at curved interfaces, Monge patch, interfacial and Gibbs energy will be discussed. Also, the effect of capillarity, geometry, substrate temperature, cooling rate and scanning parameters in the solidification of a prosthetic acetabular cup (PAC) using selective laser melting (SLM) is analysed. The contributions of this work are analysing solidification and effective factors in this process to produce parts with a higher quality and mechanical properties such as strength, strain, porosity, relative density and hardness. Results indicate that due to the surface to volume (S/V) ratio, and the increasing effect of the radius on Monge patch, thermal stresses and surface forces are more prevalent on outer surfaces. Moreover, solidification and mechanical properties are related to capillarity, geometry, substrate temperature, cooling rate, scanning power and speed. The results also indicate the interaction of solute diffusion and heat transfer with interatomic forces in large S/V ratio and at small scales tend to improve solidification.
