The electron backscattering diffraction technique was used to analyse the nature of carbides present in an ancient wootz steel blade. Bulky carbides, pro-eutectoid carbide along the prior austenite grain boundaries and fine spheroidized carbides were detected. Electron backscattering diffraction was employed to understand the texture of these carbides. The orientations of the cementite frequently occur in clusters, which points to a common origin of the members of the cluster. For the bands of coarse cementite, the origin is probably large coarse particles formed during the original cooling of the wootz cake. Pearlite formed earlier in the forging process has led to groups of similarly oriented fine cementite particles. The crystallographic texture of the cementite is sharp whereas that of the ferrite is weak. The sharp cementite textures point to the longevity of the coarse cementite throughout the repeated forging steps and to the influence of existing textured cementite on the nucleation of new cementite during cooling.

The fatigue properties of multiphase steels are an important consideration in the automotive industry. The different microstructural phases present in these steels can influence the strain life and cyclic stabilized strength of the material due to the way in which these phases accommodate the applied cyclic strain. Fully reversed strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests have been used to determine the mechanical fatigue performance of a dual-phase (DP) 590 and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) 780 steel, with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) used to examine the deformed microstructures. It is shown that the higher strain life and cyclic stabilized strength of the TRIP steel can be attributed to an increased yield strength. Despite the presence of significant levels of retained austenite in the TRIP steel, both steels exhibited similar cyclic softening behavior at a range of strain amplitudes due to comparable ferrite volume fractions and yielding characteristics. Both steels formed low-energy dislocation structures in the ferrite during cyclic straining.

The strengthening mechanism responsible for the unique combination of ultimate tensile strength and elongation in a multiphase Fe-0.2C-1.5Mn-1.2Si-0.3Mo-0.6Al-0.02Nb (wt%) steel was studied. The microstructures with different volume fractions of polygonal ferrite, bainite and retained austenite were simulated by controlled thermomechanical processing. The interrupted tensile test was used to study the bainitic ferrite, retained austenite and polygonal ferrite behaviour as a function of plastic strain. X-ray analysis was used to characterise the volume fraction and carbon content of retained austenite. Transmission electron microscopy was utilised to analyse the effect of bainitic ferrite morphology on the strain induced transformation of retained austenite and retained austenite twinning as a function of strain in the bulk material. The study has shown that the austenite twinning mechanism is more preferable than the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) mechanism during the early stages of deformation for a microstructure containing 15% polygonal ferrite, while the transformation induced plasticity effect is the main mechanism when there is 50% of polygonal ferrite in the microstructure. The bainitic ferrite morphology affects the deformation mode of retained austenite during straining. The polygonal ferrite behaviour during straining depends on dislocation substructure formed due to the deformation and the additional mobile dislocations caused by the TRIP effect. Operation of TRIP or twinning mechanisms depends not only on the chemical and mechanical stability of retained austenite, but also on the interaction of the phases during straining.

Cold drawing is a process that sizes and smooths the surface of steel before it is cold headed to produce bolts. The effect of the changes in the mechanical properties due to cold drawing on the surface strain and ductility during the upsetting process was analysed showing that the stress and strain state can be more readily altered by changes in the process conditions (friction and height-to-diameter ratio) to cause greater increase in the failure strains than can be achieved by pre-drawing.

This project quantified the press formability of galvanneal coated steel. A coil of galvanneal coated steel was produced containing various coating structures. Using different lubricants, the powdering, friction and forming properties were determined. It was found that optimum formability was obtained by effective lubrication while galvanneal coating structure controlled powdering resistance.

The syntheses and structures of the novel Ce–Fe bimetallic complexes [{Fe(sal)2(bpy)}2Ce(NO3)(H2O)3]·EtOH and [{Fe(sal)2(bpy)}4Ce2(H2O)11][salH]2·EtOH·3H2O (salH2 = salicylic acid) suggest Fe3+–sal2− units and Ce–OC(R)O–Fe bridging contribute to the formation of corrosion inhibitive layers on steel surfaces exposed to [Ce(salH)3(H2O)].

The nature of deposits on mild steel surfaces formed by exposure to corrosive and inhibiting solutions has been examined by attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy. For cerium-based inhibitors, e.g. CeCl3 the formation of cerium-containing coatings was detected whilst the cerium carboxylate Ce(sal)3 (sal=salicylate), which combines the Ce3+ with the known organic inhibitor sal, was shown to involve substantial deposition of both cerium and a salicylate species. These results, combined with corrosion inhibition data for the respective inhibitor compounds clearly indicate a synergistic corrosion mechanism for Ce(sal)3 which underpins the improved performance of this corrosion inhibitor in comparison to the individual components (i.e. Na(sal) or CeCl3).

A concrete–steel interface spectral element is developed to study the guided wave propagation along the steel rebar in the concrete. Scalar damage parameters characterizing changes in the interface (debonding damage) are incorporated into the formulation of the spectral finite element that is used for damage detection of reinforced concrete structures. Experimental tests are carried out on a reinforced concrete beam with embedded piezoelectric elements to verify the performance of the proposed model and algorithm. Parametric studies are performed to evaluate the effect of different damage scenarios on wave propagation in the reinforced concrete structures. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that the method is effective to model wave propagation along the steel rebar in concrete and promising to detect damage in the concrete–steel interface.

The evolution of adiabatic shear localization in commercial titanium subjected to heavy cold rolling was investigated. The evolution of the morphology, microhardness, local shear strain, and local temperature increments were systematically studied and estimated. A shear band with about 25m in width was formed and fine nanograins with a range of dimensions varying from 20 to 160nm and had a mean size of about 70nm were observed inside the centre of shear band after 83% cold-rolling. Microhardness test shows that hardness within the shear band is markedly higher than that of the surrounding matrix. The calculated shear strain and maximum temperature increase within the shear band are much higher than that of the overall deformed sample. The initiation of shear localization may depend on geometric perturbation instead of thermal ones.

The hot deformation behaviour of a duplex ferritic/austenitic stainless steel was studied after different deformation conditions. The results showed a strange and interesting behaviour in the strength of the material during post-deformation studies. For most deformation conditions, the flow stress of the material was un-expectedly increased after annealing of deformed structures. This phenomenon implied that microstructural hardening occurred in the material during the interpass annealing rather than the expected softening. Also, an interesting change was observed where the morphology of the austenite phase changed from stringers or layers of austenite to a widmanstätten structure. The microstructural studies suggest that the austenite was dissolved and re-precipitated during the annealing process and the hardening was mostly associated with the change in the morphology of austenite.

The performance of multiphase steels with high strength and improved toughness or ductility, such as intercritically annealed dual-phase (DP) and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels, is of key importance to the automotive industry. In this work we have considered the entire manufacturing process and the effects of this on the final product performance. These steels are formed to produce the required final shape and then the car is paint baked. In this work we also consider the effect of cold working and bake hardening on the fatigue life of the components.

The effect of composition and processing schedule on the microstructure of C-Mn-Si-Mo-(Al)-(Nb) steels containing nano-bainite was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT). The major phase formed in all steels was nano-bainite. However, the steels with lower carbon and alloying addition content subjected to TMP had better mechanical properties than high alloyed steel after isothermal treatment. The presence of ferrite in the microstructure can improve not only ductility but lead to the formation of retained austenite with optimum chemical stability.

As-received hot-rolled 5.6 mm thick IF steel sheet was symmetrically/ asymmetrically cold rolled at room temperature down to 1.9 mm. The asymmetric rolling was carried out in monotonic (an idle roll is always on the same side of the sheet) and reversal (the sheet was turned 180° around the rolling direction between passes) modes. Microstructure, texture and mechanical properties were analysed. The observed differences in structure and mechanical properties were modest, and therefore further investigation of the effects of other kinds of asymmetry is suggested.

The article discusses the findings of research on the cost performance of structural frames. The analysis conducted is based on a range of designs that are commonly found in 10-storey buildings in Australia. The study explored the best cost solutions for any particular project through generic cost models of steel, concrete, and formwork systems used in commercial buildings. The research concluded that the most important factor in choosing structural building frames would be the unique characteristics of individual projects.

This paper presents a technique to detect the delamination between the steel bars and concrete in the reinforced concrete structures. The piezoelectric components are mounted on reinforcing bars that are embedded in RC structures as sensors and actuators to generate and record the signal, which is sensitive to the delamination between the steel bars and concrete. The experimental study is carried out on a concrete slab with different debonds between the rebars and concrete. The test results show that the delamination between the rebars and concrete can be detected with the embedded piezoelectric sensors and actuators.
