Communities of mathematical inquiry : a primary pedagogy in peril

This paper outlines some examples from an Australian education system, and its classrooms, that provide evidence of practices that are considered as antithetical to establishing and maintaining Communities of Mathematical Inquiry (CoMI). Although some possible solutions are posed, implementation is left open for readers to consider, as contexts vary widely from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

Critical perspectives on communities of mathematical inquiry

While the notion of Communities of Inquiry (CoI) has its origins in philosophy, there has been widespread interest in mathematics classrooms as Communities of Mathematical Inquiry (CoMI). This paper outlines the structure and content of Research Forum 2: Critical Perspectives on Communities of Mathematical Inquiry, gives a brief review of research in the area, and highlights some key issues.

Communities of practice in Academe (CoP-iA) : understanding academic work practices to enable knowledge building capacities in corporate universities

A form of voluntary workplace engagement, communities of practice are characterised in literature as providing entities with the potential to harness the multiplier effects of collaborative processes by building on informal networks within entities. As knowledge building and sharing institutions it would be reasonable to presume that communities of practice activities have been embraced to facilitate a level of connectedness and engagement in a university context. However, evidence from the Australian higher education environment suggests that the enlistment of communities of practice processes by universities faces a number of challenges that are peculiar to academe. We suggest that academic knowledge work practices are significantly different from the business/industry related applications of communities of practice and that an understanding of the unique aspects of such practices, together with the impediments posed by a 'corporate university' model, require acknowledgment before the knowledge building and sharing aspects of communities of practice activities in academia can emerge.

Sustainability in online communities of practice : the case study of a group of Secondary School Educators in Victoria

This paper reports on Information Technology (IT) secondary school educators in Victoria and their involvement in an online community of practice. It examined the social effects of the online mailing list technology on their participation and factors that influenced their collaboration with other colleagues. In mapping these elements, the motivations of educators and the effects on online communities of practice can be distilled and then used to build and sustain other architectures of participation. It was found that mailing list subscribers seem to trade a currency of support, thoughts, ideas and answers, which helped them in their day-to-day teaching. Online communities of practice provide a convenient way to keep up professional networks while continuing to stay abreast with subject specific knowledge and skills. The findings of this case study may be generalised to other educational mailing lists to guide designers and managers and inspire educators to join and ultimately benefit from these text based online environments.

Staff perceptions of the implementation of enterprise resource planning systems in three Australian universities

This chapter reports a study that examined the staff perceptions of the implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERPs) in three Australian universities. The literature on issues impacting on effective Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations identified a number of issues that translate from the corporate sector to the higher education sector and included a number that require particular focus in this sector. Case study methodology is used to examine the staff perceptions of the management of ERP implementations in three Australian universities in the process of implementing ERP systems. The study was conducted in two phases. The first phase of the study obtained data through a series of focus groups at one university and, combined with an analysis of the relevant literature served as a framework for the development of the research process in the second phase of the study. This phase involved in depth interviews with staff that enabled the researcher to undertake a more detailed exploration of the staff perceptions of influences affecting ERP system implementations at three Australian universities. This chapter reports that staff perceptions of the process of ERP implementations are central to their efficacious implementations in Australian universities. Staff perceptions demonstrate that particular consideration of organisational influences related to their context and the perceptions of the users of the systems must be factored into the planning for ERP implementations in Universities.

Spirit of enterprise

Remittances from Fijian workers overseas are the nation’s largest income – exceeding that of tourism and sugar. Fijian bodies have become a valuable export commodity in the increasingly privatised economy of war. Coco Fusco writes that from the 18th Century, texts have “reduced people of colour to the corporeal, whiteness was understood as a spirit that manifests itself in a dynamic relation to the physical world. Whiteness, then, does not need to be made visible to present an image; it can be expressed as the spirit of enterprise, as the power to organise the material world, and as an expansive relation to the environment.” This work asks where black and white bodies fit within this new economy of war…who is visible and who is invisible? Whose bodies are commodities and who embodies the spirit of enterprise?

Exploring online communities of practice for biology teachers in Botswana

This study, which sought to determine the potential of an online community of practice among biology teachers in Botswana, has identified teacher level, school level and systemic influences as shaping the process and outcome of an online intervention into a teacher professional development programme run by the University of Botswana.
