Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) appears to be made up of several clusters of illness categories acting alone or in tandem to cause the decline of health through; fatigue/exhaustion, sensitivity/allergies, pain, general muscle and joint pains, cognitive impairment and gastrointestinal problems. This study investigated how patients interpret, evaluate and respond to the complex and varied symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Data were collected from persons with CFS using a survey (n=90) and an interview (n=45). The researchers investigated how chronic fatigue syndrome is diagnosed by medical practitioners, how the label of CFS is determined and the social consequences for the patient. The results confirm the limited ability of the biomedical paradigm to diagnose adequately and treat effectively 'socially constructed' and medically ambiguous illnesses like CFS. In the absence of a legitimated regime of medical treatment for CFS, a range of often expensive treatments are employed by CFS sufferers, from formal use of pharmaceutical drugs through to 'alternative' therapies, including herbal, vitamin, homeopathic, esoteric meditative techniques, spiritual healing and general counselling are taken in no particular order.

The pure elemental powder mixtures with the compositions of Mg65NixSi35x (x = 10, 20, 25, 33 at.%) were subject to high-energy ball mill, and the structures of the mixtures at different intervals of milling were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compositional dependency of the glass forming ability (GFA) in Mg–Ni–Si system was evaluated based on the experimental results and the theoretical calculation. The compositional dependency of GFA in Mg–Ni–Si system can be understood well by comparing the enthalpies of the crystalline and amorphous phases based on the Miedema's theory for the formation enthalpy of alloys. Increasing the Ni/Mg ratio and/or decreasing Si content can improve the amorphous formability. The calculation results might be of great help in optimising the composition with high GFA in Mg–Ni–Si system.

A study of possibilities given by the developed Cellular Automata–Finite Element (CAFE) multi-scale model for prediction of the initiation and propagation of micro-shear bands and shear bands in metallic materials subjected to plastic deformation is described in the paper. Particular emphasis in defining the criterion for initiation of micro-shear and shear bands, as well as in defining the transition rules for the cellular automata, is put on accounting for the physical aspects of those phenomena occurring in two different scales in the material. The proposed approach led to the creation of the real multi-scale model of strain localization. This model predicts material behavior in various thermo-mechanical processes. Selected examples of applications of the developed model to simulations of metal forming processes, which involve strain localization, are presented in the paper. An approach based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic, which allows to overcome difficulties with remeshing in the traditional CAFE method, is presented in the paper as well. In this approach remeshing becomes possible and mesh distortion, which limits application of the CAFE method to simple deformation processes, is eliminated.

For a given sheet metal forming process, an accurate determination of the contact pressure distribution experienced is an essential step towards the estimation of tool life. This investigation utilizes finite element (FE) analysis to determine the evolution and distribution of contact pressure over the die radius, throughout the duration of a channel forming process. It was found that a typical two-peak steady-state contact pressure response exists for the majority of the process. However, this was preceded by a transient  response, which produced extremely large and localized contact pressures. Notably, it was found that the peak transient contact pressure was more than double the steady-state peak. These contact pressure results may have a significant influence on the tool wear response and therefore impact current wear testing and prediction techniques. Hence, an investigation into the validity of the predicted contact pressure was conducted.

The influence of temperature on the forming behavior of an aluminum/polypropylene/aluminum (APA) sandwich sheet was studied. Shear and tensile tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties of the laminate and the component materials as a function of process temperature. The forming limit diagram (FLD) of the laminate was established for two different temperatures, and its springback behavior was examined in four-point bend and channel bend tests. Cup forming tests were performed at various test temperatures to determine the limiting drawing ratio (LDR) and the tendency for wrinkling at these temperatures. Although there was only a minor influence of temperature on the mechanical properties and the FLD values of the laminate, the bend test results reveal that springback can be reduced by forming at higher temperature. The decreasing strength of the core material with rising process temperature led to an increased tendency of the laminate to wrinkle in the heated cup drawing tests.

Magnesium alloys are generally found to be slower to extrude than aluminum alloys; however, limited quantitative comparisons of the actual operating windows have been published. In this work, the extrusion limits are determined for a series of commercial magnesium alloys (M1, ZM21, AZ31, AZ61, and ZK60). These are compared with the limits established for aluminum alloy AA6063. The maximum extrusion speed of alloy M1 is shown to be similar to AA6063. Alloys ZM21, AZ31, ZK60, and AZ61 exhibit maximum extrusion speeds 44, 18, 4, and 3 pct, respectively, of the maximum measured for AA6063. For AZ31, the maximum extrusion speed is increased by 22 pct after homogenization and by 64 pct for repeat extrusions. The variation in the extrusion limits with changing alloy content is rationalized in terms of differences in the hot working flow stress and solidus temperature.

Consumption of wrought magnesium products wax reduced by half between 1971 and the 1990s. To increase the use of wrought magnesium, several challenges must be overcome: its formability at room temperature is lower than steel or aluminum; its productivity is lower than steel or aluminum; and extruded magnesium exhibits a marked anisotropy of yield when comparing tension and compression. This article describes research on the rapid evaluation of the extrusion behavior of wrought magnesium alloys. The work aims to establish a methodology for rapid prototyping of alloys and to assess the effects of aluminum on the behavior of AZ-series magnesium alloys.

A knowledge based optimism technique has been developed to predict solutions for quality issues found in an initial draw die design. Post processing of the initial design yields all the features applying forces, and major quality issues. Using the geometric relationship between the two, a knowledge-base is interrogated to determine the possible corrective actions. These actions are then passed through a fast semi-analytical model to determine the level of change required. Results from a 2D forming are presented to highlight the advantage of the new algorithms over current optimisation techniques.

The paper explores the ways in which risk operates as a powerful discourse that shapes what health education teachers said about and what they did in their classroom practices. The paper draws on a qualitative study that seeks to explore the dominant and contesting discourses within health education.
