This thesis investigated the socioeconomic influences on women's eating behaviours. Results showed that women of low socioeconomic position not only perceived higher direct financial costs as a predominant barrier for consuming a healthy diet, but also a number of indirect or non-financial cost factors such as the perceived additional time costs involved in preparing and cooking healthy foods.

The rise and fall of urban squatter settlements in Santiago de Chile

The thesis examines the forces at work that resulted in the proliferation in the 1950s-60s, and then the subsequent decline, in the number of urban squatter settelements in Santiago, Chile. A feature of the work is the fieldwork investigation on the material conditions within the squatter settlements households.

Advanced technology and economies of scale in the cement industry

The thesis examines sources of economies of scale for the manufacture and distribution of Portland cement. Using cost models, it is shown that recent advances in technology have increased the economies of scale for efficient clinker production significantly, and to a lesser degree for finish grinding operations and bulk distribution.

Technology effecting interorganisational relationship formation

This thesis examined the effect of emerging broadcasting technology on the formation of interorganisational relationships (IORs) between Australian-based professional football clubs and sport broadcasters. While six preconditions for IOR formation were identified, the clubs and sport broadcasters seek to retain a league-regulated environment.

An input-output-based linkage measurement framework

This study proposed an input-output-based linkage measurement framework, which is a multi-level hierarchy, omni-direction decision-making model and takes the impact of capital into account. This framework had resolved the critical deficiencies and inherent limitations of the existing methods and was used to explore the real estate and construction linkages.

The viability of commercial tomato production in the Autopot system

An investigation of the viability of commercial tomato production using the Autopot growing system in Australia. The Autopot system is a relatively new hydroponic production system technology that is being introduced onto the market in competition with traditional systems. Although commercial tomato production was found to be significantly more water and nutrient efficient in the Autopot system than in a traditional open system, yields were significantly lower. Financial modelling shows that tomato production in this system would not be commercially viable in Australia for a typical tomato growing venture under current conditions.

Existence of externalities from investment in higher education research and development

Research undertaken for this thesis supports the underlying claim that education does generate externalities. By examining the impact of higher education R&D on Australian state production, the results suggest that both pure and applied R&D have a statistically significant impact on Australia's regional economic performance.

Height and cost of buildings in Shanghai and Hong Kong

Initial findings indicated that the curved relationships of height-cost of residential buildings in Shanghai and Hong Kong exhibit different profiles. The differences suggest that, Hong Kong contractors have more expertise in multi-story and high-rise construction than contractors in Shanghai. The dissimilarities also imply that different sets of criteria should be applied in the judgement of height affects on cost in different locations.

New orthodoxes in vocational educational in Australia

The thesis argues that the "top down" approach which has been a recent feature of vocational provision in Australia has largely excluded vocational teachers and students from being involved in curriculum and policy formation. The issues investigated are, keeping up with the Joneses type behaviour, the transfer of intermediate commodities, the transfer process as an informal way of insurance, and the efficiency of market exchange as opposed to private transactions.

It reveals a strong business case for support, based on the sustainable development benefits and shared value for all stakeholders and makes recommendations for using the findings to engage companies.
