This study examined the influence of triethyl and tributyl phosphite (TEP and TBP) additives on the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion cells. The cell performance of the TEP- and TBP-containing electrolytes was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The flammability of the electrolytes was also investigated by measuring the self-extinguishing time of the electrolytes. The results showed that the TEP and TBP additives suppressed the flammability of the electrolyte, with a significant improvement in cell performance observed for the TEP additive. In addition, TEP and TBP additives improved the thermal stability of the battery and its electrochemical cell performance. Overall, 5 wt% TEP and TBP can be used as a flame-retarding additive to improve the cell performance of Li-ion batteries due to the decrease in cell impedance and SEI formation.

The performance of surface finishes as a function of the pH of the utilized plating solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. In addition, the surface finishes were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), and the contact angle of the liquid/solid interface was recorded. NiP films on copper substrates with gold coatings exhibited their highest coating performance at pH 5. This was attributed to the films having the highest protective efficiency and charge transfer resistance, lowest porosity value, and highest contact angle among those examined as a result of the strongly preferred Au(111) orientation and the improved surface wettability.

This study examined the properties of 1 wt.% vinylene carbonate, vinyl ethylene carbonate, and diphenyloctyl phosphate additive electrolytes as a promising way of beneficially improving the surface and cell resistance of Li-ion batteries. The additive electrolytes were dominant both in surface formation and internal resistance. In particular, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed that diphenyloctyl phosphate is an excellent additive to the electrolyte in the Li-ion batteries due to the improved co-intercalation of the solvent molecules.

A new enzymeless glucose sensor has been fabricated via electrospinning technology and subsequent calcination. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared nanofibers have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline medium at nickel oxide modified glassy carbon electrodes has been investigated. The modified electrodes offer excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the glucose oxidation at low positive potential (0.3 V). Glucose has been determined chronoamperometrically at the surface of NiO nanofibers modified electrode in 0.5 mM NaOH. Under the optimized condition, the calibration curve is linear in the concentration range of 2 × 10−3 mM∼1 mM, and 1 mM∼9.5 mM. The detection limit (signal-to-noise 3) and response time are 3.394 × 10−6 M and 2 s, respectively. The NiO electrospun nanofibers is easy to prepare and feasible in economy. The modified electrode is steady and can be used repeatedly, so it is reasonable to expect its broad use in non-enzymatic glucose sensor.

In this work, LaMO3 and LaNi0.5M0.5O3 (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Mn and Cr) perovskite oxide electrocatalysts were synthesized by a combined ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid-citrate complexation technique and subsequent calcinations at 1000 °C in air. Their powder X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate the formation of a specific crystalline structure for each composition. The catalytic property of these materials toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied in alkaline potassium hydroxide solution using the rotating disk and rotating ring-disk electrode techniques. Carbon is considered to be a crucial additive component because its addition into perovskite oxide leads to optimized ORR current density. For LaMO3 (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Mn and Cr)), in terms of the ORR current densities, the performance is enhanced in the order of LaCrO3, LaFeO3, LaNiO3, LaMnO3, and LaCoO3. For LaNi0.5M0.5O3, the ORR current performance is enhanced in the order of LaNi0.5Fe0.5O3, LaNi0.5Co0.5O3, LaNi0.5Cr0.5O3, and LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3. Overall, LaCoO3 demonstrates the best performance. Most notably, substituting half of the nickel with cobalt, iron, manganese, or chromium translates the ORR to a more positive onset potential, suggesting the beneficial catalytic effect of two transition metal cations with Mn as the most promising candidate. Koutecky–Levich analysis on the ORR current densities of all compositions indicates that the four-electron pathway is favored on these oxides, which are consistent with hydroperoxide ion formation of <2%.

The biochemical responses of the earthworms, Eisenia fetida, exposed to a series of Cd concentrations (0.00, 1.25, 2.50, 5.00 and 10.00 mg Cd2+ kg−1 soil) for up to 8 weeks were investigated, aiming to evaluate the sublethal effects of Cd with long exposure and to explore the potential for applying these responses as biomarkers to indicate the Cd-contaminated soil. The following biochemical parameters were determined: cytochrome P450 (CYP) contents and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST). Cadmium concentrations in all earthworms were apparently accumulated in 4 weeks, and showed minor changes in weeks 6–8 compared to the first 4 weeks. CYP presented a significant elevation in 2–4 weeks and a decline in 6–8 weeks in each treated group. The activities of SOD and CAT showed an obvious increase with exposure of 6–8 weeks while their levels were not affected in 4 weeks in each treated group. GST activity revealed significant activation starting from week 4. This study confirmed the significance of applying a suite of biomarkers rather than a selective choice to assess the impact of pollutants on organisms. It also indicated that the observed effects were more dependent upon exposure duration than dose.

Structural battery composites that concurrently carry load and store electric energy will
transform future vehicles. They can replace inert structural components and simultaneously provide supplementary power for light load applications. Rechargeable lithium polymer battery cells are embedded into carbon fibre/epoxy matrix composite laminates, which are then tested under tension and three-point bending to investigate the mechanical and electrical performances of structural batteries. The experimental results show that the integration of battery cells into composite laminates has negligible impact on the mechanical strengths of the composite structures. Furthermore, the battery cells remain 95% effective at loads up to about 60% of the ultimate flexural failure load and 50% of the ultimate tensile failure load.

In this work, we report a mild and cost-effective solution method to directly grow Ni-substituted Co3O4 (ternary NiCo2O4) nanorod arrays on Cu substrates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements show that the values of the electrolyte resistance Re and charge-transfer resistance Rct of NiCo2O4 are 6.8 and 63.5 Ω, respectively, which are significantly lower than those of binary Co3O4 (10.4 and 122.4 Ω). This EIS characterization strongly confirms that the ternary NiCo2O4 anode has much higher electrical conductivity than that of the binary Co3O4 electrode materials, which should greatly enhance the lithium storage performances. Due to the well-aligned 1D nanorod microstructure and a higher electrical conductivity, these ternary NiCo2O4 nanorod arrays manifest high specific capacity, excellent cycling stability (a high reversible capacity of about 830 mA h g−1 was achieved after 30 cycles at 0.5 C) and high rate capability (787, 695, 512, 254, 127 mA h g−1 at 1 C, 2 C, 6 C 50 C and 110 C, respectively).

The ZIP family of metal transporters is involved in the transport of Zn2+ and other metal cations from the extracellular environment and/or organelles into the cytoplasm of prokaryotes, eukaryotes and archaeotes. In the present study, we identified twin ZIP transporters, Zip11 (Npun_F3111) and Zip63 (Npun_F2202) encoded within the genome of the filamentous cyanobacterium, Nostoc punctiforme PCC73120. Sequence-based analyses and structural predictions confirmed that these cyanobacterial transporters belong to the SLC39 subfamily of metal transporters. Quantitative real-time (QRT)-PCR analyses suggested that the enzymes encoded by zip11 and zip63 have a broad allocrite range that includes zinc as well as cadmium, cobalt, copper, manganese and nickel. Inactivation of either zip11 or zip63 via insertional mutagenesis in N. punctiforme resulted in reduced expression of both genes, highlighting a possible co-regulation mechanism. Uptake experiments using 65Zn demonstrated that both zip mutants had diminished zinc uptake capacity, with the deletion of zip11 resulting in the greatest overall reduction in 65Zn uptake. Over-expression of Zip11 and Zip63 in an E. coli mutant strain (ZupT736::kan) restored divalent metal cation uptake, providing further evidence that these transporters are involved in Zn uptake in N. punctiforme. Our findings show the functional role of these twin metal uptake transporters in N. punctiforme, which are independently expressed in the presence of an array of metals. Both Zip11 and Zip63 are required for the maintenance of homeostatic levels of intracellular zinc N. punctiforme, although Zip11 appears to be the primary zinc transporter in this cyanobacterium, both ZIP's may be part of a larger metal uptake system with shared regulatory elements.
