This paper examines the patterning of exposures to occupational hazards in relation to occupational skill level as a proxy for pay rate, testing the general hypothesis that exposures to occupational hazards increase in prevalence with decreasing skill level. A population-based telephone survey was conducted on a random sample of working Victorians (N = 1,101). A set of 10 indicators of exposure to occupational hazards were analysed individually and as a summary scale in multivariate regression models. A significant increasing trend in hazardous working conditions from the highest to lowest occupational skill level was observed, with those in lower skill level jobs twice as likely to be exposed as those at the highest skill level. This overall trend was driven primarily by higher exposure in the middle skill level group (technicians and skilled trades) as well as the lowest (labourers and elementary clerical), the two main bluecollar groups. Findings provided partial support for the hypothesised relationship.

The title compound (Cp*Sn)BPh 4 was obtained by the metathesis reaction of Cp*SnCl with NaBPh4and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as solution and solid-state 119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The coordination modes are best described as (ν 5-C5Me 5)Sn(μ-ν6-Ph) 2BPh2.

 Utilizing MRI, this thesis identified wide-spread brain abnormalities in autism. White matter deficits were more pronounced in the left hemisphere, attributable to atypical myelination. Regarding the mirror neuron system, functional anomalies were situated in the right, dorsal, premotor cortex which further demonstrated reduced functional connectivity with the inferior parietal lobule.

The impacts of privatization on wage inequality and welfare are considered for developing countries. In the short run, privatization can narrow wage inequality but reduce output of public firms. However, the favorable effect of privatization on lowering wage inequality vanishes in the long run due to the excessive entry of public firms. Thus, a policy recommendation for privatization would be: to avoid rising wage inequality, entry regulation of public firms should be imposed in the short run, and to mitigate the output contraction, complementary structural changes or policy reforms are needed in the transitional period of privatization.

Within China, many villages have been drained of their young and most able workers, cities have been swamped by the ‘floating population’, and many rural migrants have been unable to integrate into urban society. Internationally, the Chinese have become increasingly more mobile. Two-dimensional (2D) materials usually have a layer-dependent work function, which require fast and accurate detection for the evaluation of their device performance. A detection technique with high throughput and high spatial resolution has not yet been explored. Using a scanning electron microscope, we have developed and implemented a quantitative analytical technique which allows effective extraction of the work function of graphene. This technique uses the secondary electron contrast and has nanometre-resolved layer information. The measurement of few-layer graphene flakes shows the variation of work function between graphene layers with a precision of less than 10 meV. It is expected that this technique will prove extremely useful for researchers in a broad range of fields due to its revolutionary throughput and accuracy.

Abstract A growing body of education policy and practice purports to educate young people to become reflexive citizens with the capacity to direct their own lives as well as to ‘make a difference’ in ways that improve the democratic fabric of society. This reinforces a discourse of youth agency that obscures the structural inequalities that continue to centrally influence some young people’s lives and to play themselves out in complex ways within schools. This paper discusses the findings of a recent study that employs concepts of risk and reflexive modernity to analyse the experience of young people in two Australian schools in areas of entrenched disadvantage where programs of youth participation have been introduced as part of the curriculum. It concludes that the debate about the relationship between agency and structure is one that is far from being done and dusted, but is one with which sociology must continue to engage.

Reported here are the syntheses and molecular structures of three novel arylindium phosphinates, [(2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃In)₂(OH)₂(O₂PMe₂)₂] (1), [(2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃In)₂(OH) (O₂PPh₂)₃] (2), and [(2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃In)(O₂PMe₅C₃H)₂(H₂O)₂] (3), which were obtained by condensation reaction of the m-terphenylindium dihydroxide [(2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃In(OH)₂]₄with dimethylphosphinic acid, diphenylphosphinic acid, and ,2,3,4,4-pentamethylphosphetanic acid, respectively.

Fire is a major disturbance process in many ecosystems world-wide, resulting in spatially and temporally dynamic landscapes. For populations occupying such environments, fire-induced landscape change is likely to influence population processes, and genetic patterns and structure among populations. The Mallee Emu-wren Stipiturus mallee is an endangered passerine whose global distribution is confined to fire-prone, semi-arid mallee shrublands in south-eastern Australia. This species, with poor capacity for dispersal, has undergone a precipitous reduction in distribution and numbers in recent decades. We used genetic analyses of 11 length-variable, nuclear loci to examine population structure and processes within this species, across its global range. Populations of the Mallee Emu-wren exhibited a low to moderate level of genetic diversity, and evidence of bottlenecks and genetic drift. Bayesian clustering methods revealed weak genetic population structure across the species' range. The direct effects of large fires, together with associated changes in the spatial and temporal patterns of suitable habitat, have the potential to cause population bottlenecks, serial local extinctions and subsequent recolonisation, all of which may interact to erode and homogenise genetic diversity in this species. Movement among temporally and spatially shifting habitat, appears to maintain long-term genetic connectivity. A plausible explanation for the observed genetic patterns is that, following extensive fires, recolonisation exceeds in-situ survival as the primary driver of population recovery in this species. These findings suggest that dynamic, fire-dominated landscapes can drive genetic homogenisation of populations of species with low-mobility and specialised habitat that otherwise would be expected to show strongly structured populations. Such effects must be considered when formulating management actions to conserve species in fire-prone systems.

It is well established that arsenic toxicity is postulated to be primarily due to the binding of As(III) to sulfhydryl-containing enzymes. However, the mechanism of carcinogenesis induced by arsenic is still unclear. The interaction of arsenic with GSH and related enzymes seems a very important issue regarding mechanism of arsenical induced toxicity or carcinogenesis. The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of chronic exposure to low dose of As(III) on GSH level, gene expression and cell transformation in NIH3T3 cells. The results showed that long-term, low dose arsenic treatment makes 3T3 cell more resistant to acute arsenic treatment. There were morphology changes after long-term arsenic treatment. First, partially immortalized 3T3 cell became immortalized. In addition, the cells were doubling more quickly than the control cells and attained higher density than the control cells at confluence. Second, cells treated with 0.1 µ.M As(III) exhibited anchorage-independent growth. Arsenic could enhance GSH level at 0.5 -10 µM dose of arsenic in 24 h treatment and decrease it at 25 µM and above. In long-term treatment with low dose of arsenic, GSH levels were decreased. As(I1I) can increase both glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities at low dose (0.5-10 M), but decreased GST and GR activities at 25 M and higher dose of arsenic, while in long-term As(III) treatment, GST and GR activities are increased. Both long-term and short-term treatments with As(III) can induce GR gene expression. GPx mRNA levels were decreased both in acute and chronic arsenic treated cells. Chronic treatment with As(III) also decreased the p53 mRNA level. Taken together, our results suggest that As(III) can alter GST, GR enzyme activities as well as GSH level and related gene expression both in long-term and short-term treatment but in a different manner in different doses. Alteration of cellular GSH level by As(III) might play all important role in gene expression and arsenic induced cell transformation.
