Rethinking religion : transforming cultures of violence to cultures of peace

Humanity has always been preoccupied with the search for peace and happiness. Many people turn to and rely on religion to provide them with a means of understanding the human condition and as a methodology of how to find peace within themselves and work towards the creation of peace on earth. Religions however, while providing many valuable tools for peacebuilding, can also contribute to perpetuating cultures of violence.

Religion in Victoria's government schools : a timely debate

While the role of religion in Australian schools has been vigorously debated since the 1870s, it has recently generated considerable controversy, particularly in the State of Victoria. Despite the Victorian Government’s positive record of promoting multifaith engagement, Christian volunteers – provided by ACCESS Ministries - currently teach 96% of students enrolled in Special Religious Instruction (SRI) classes in Victoria’s Government schools.

This paper discusses the role of religion in creating resilience among elderly individuals of Greek background in melbourne, Australia, who are suffering from chronic disease. The role of religion in forming their conceptualization of health is analyzed in the context of their linguistic and cultural background as well as in relation to how they view their heritage and cultural identity.

Religion as a means of resilience and adjustment to chronic illness

This qualitative study describes the understanding of health and belief practices among elderly Greek Australians. In particular, the role of religion is discussed as a means of resilience and adjustment to illness, as religious faith often influences individual’s thoughts, feelings, and how they may accept or understand their particular health condition. Adjustment has a strong psychological or emotional component that is likely to be affected by culturally determined conceptualizations of health. As such, the particular background of a population may be very significant in the level and means of adaptation of individuals and groups.

Religion and post-disaster development

This chapter discusses the role religion and religious organizations can play in development following a natural disaster. The development efforts in Aceh, Indonesia, following the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 provide examples of how the nature of Acehnese society, its views on religion, the role of religious organizations in the region, and the activities of aid agencies at the time all contributed the the post-disaster experience in this society.The chapter also considers what the role of faith in such situations might mean for future development efforts, especially in the context of natural disaster.

The role of cultural values and religion on views of body size and eating practices among adolescents from Fiji, Tonga and Australia

Objectives This study investigated cultural values related to body image and eating practices in Western and non-Western societies.

Design and Methods In total, 628 Fijian, 463 Indo-Fijian, 598 Tongan, and 534 Australian adolescents completed measures of cultural values and religious influences in relation to the ideal body and eating practices.

Results Fijian and Tongan adolescents were more likely to value a large body. Religious influences were most strongly associated with eating practices for Fijians, Indo-Fijians, and Tongans.

Conclusions The findings support the role of religion in transmitting cultural values regarding eating practices in Pacific Island communities.

Statement of contribution
What is already known on this subject? Previous research has demonstrated that sociocultural factors shape body image and eating behaviours. Most of this research has been conducted in Western countries.

What does this study add? The current study identifies the role of cultural values and religious influences on body image and eating behaviours in a number of different cultural groups. This is the first study to use the same methodology to explore these relationships across Western and Pacific Island communities.

On eschatology and the 'return to religion'

We begin with Tony Blair's July 2009 Australian visit. Mr Blair converted publicly to Catholicism in 2008. In Australia that year, he argued that the West was facing an internal crisis of confidence, as well as external threats. Blair warned in particular against what he called 'aggressive secularism' and the Western tendency to 'see people of religious faith as people to be pushed to one side'. The Australian's 'editor at large', Paul Kelly, responded enthusiastically. Blair's position represented 'the best argument against the rise of secular intolerance and its distorting of history in the education system by seeking to downgrade or eliminate religion in the West's story'. This stood in contrast to the Australian Labour Party's disastrous' distancing from the Christian tradition. Kelly styled Blair as opposing 'the fashionable Western idea that religion can be suppressed or confined to the private realm' as 'a delusion and dangerous'. The Australian's position is not surprising, given the news paper's long- standing, US-influenced neoconservative position.

The emergent sea of nature and religion : a study of faith-based responses to issues of environmental sustainability

The research highlighted that the majority of adherents to faith groups in Australia showed a high level of concern to environmental issues; however, there is a need to provide wide-ranging community engagement programs. Further education is required considering there was uncertainty about some environmental issues, in particular climate change.
