Objectives: The objective of this is article is to examine some of the strategies and interventions designed to encourage responsible alcohol consumption within Australian Rules football clubs.
Design: Qualitative research was undertaken with fans of four fans of football teams who compete in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). In total, 93 interviews were conducted with male (80) and female (13) fans across these clubs. Interview data were thematically analysed with the assistance of the NVIVO software package. To elicit additional insight about the social meanings of drinking, researchers visited football games and a range of social functions.
Results: Analysis of the qualitative data suggests that formal interventions implemented by football clubs often prove ineffectual in encouraging responsible alcohol consumption, with more effective strategies aimed at dissuading heavy drinking being operationalized at an informal level by drinkers themselves through a number of ‘everyday’ or ‘lay’ strategies. Such strategies correspond to the broad analytical categories of ‘keeping safe’, ‘minimising damage’ and ‘taking charge’.
Conclusion: This focus on the role of lay strategies in informing health behaviours makes an important contribution to how we understand health promotion initiatives in relation to harmful drinking in sport and other contexts.

Gene Expression Comparative Analysis allows bioinformatics researchers to discover the conserved or specific functional regulation of genes. This is achieved through comparisons between quantitative gene expression measurements obtained in different species on different platforms to address a particular biological system. Comparisons are made more difficult due to the need to map orthologous genes between species, pre-processing of data (normalization) and post-analysis (statistical and correlation analysis). In this paper we introduce a web-based software package called EXP-PAC which provides on line interfaces for database construction and query of data, and makes use of a high performance computing platform of computer clusters to run gene sequence mapping and normalization methods in parallel. Thus, EXP-PAC facilitates the integration of gene expression data for comparative analysis and the online sharing, retrieval and visualization of complex multi-specific and multi-platform gene expression results.

This paper responds to the problem of how Practice-Based Research (PBR) can be usefully incorporated into a cross-disciplinary, Mixed Method project design, by considering a non-conventional use of the NVivo qualitative analysis software package. NVivo also proves valuable in maximising the creative-arts practice interdisciplinary potential within PBR itself. The ensuing discussion centres around Deakin University’s ‘Flows and Catchments’ research and teaching initiative.

High-brightness synchrotron X-rays together with precision achromatic focusing optics on beamline 7.3.3 at the Advanced Light Source have been applied for Laue microdiffraction analysis of mineralogical phases in Egyptian pigments. Although this task is usually performed using monochromatic X-ray diffraction, the Laue technique was both faster and more reliable for the present sample. In this approach, white-beam diffraction patterns are collected as the sample is raster scanned across the incident beam (0.8 µm × 0.8 µm). The complex Laue diffraction patterns arising from illumination of multiple grains are indexed using the white-beam crystallographic software package XMAS, enabling a mineralogical map as a function of sample position. This methodology has been applied to determine the mineralogy of colour pigments taken from the ancient Egyptian coffin of Tjeseb, a priestess of the Apis bull dating from the Third Intermediate to Late period, 25th Dynasty to early 26th Dynasty (747 to 600 BC). For all pigments, a ground layer of calcite and quartz was identified. For the blue pigment, cuprorivaite (CuCaSi4O10) was found to be the primary colouring agent with a grain size ranging from ∼10 to 50 µm. In the green and yellow samples, malachite [Cu2(OH)2CO3] and goethite [FeO(OH)] were identified, respectively. Grain sizes from these pigments were significantly smaller. It was possible to index some malachite grains up to ∼20 µm in size, while the majority of goethite grains displayed a nanocrystalline particle size. The inability to obtain a complete mineralogical map for goethite highlights the fact that the incident probe size is considerably larger than the grain size. This limit will continue to improve as the present trend is toward focusing optics approaching the diffraction limit (∼1000× smaller beam area).

This paper’s research question concerns how the ecological creativity of the Volcanic Plains region of Western Victoria may be transformed into an ecology of well-being of benefit to the local community. Drawing on the philosophies of Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze, we argue that community well-being results from the richness of connections and relationships made within a place. The case study for our investigation is ‘Flows & Catchments’, which is an ongoing, collaborative, creative-arts research project auspiced by Deakin University. Its modus operandi is Practice-Based Research (PBR), and its aim is to promote community well-being in Western Victoria. However, while the whole metier of the creative arts is to make the novel connections and relationships that should bring about community wellbeing, the various artists of ‘Flows & Catchments’ have proved slightly reluctant to make connections outside of their individual or small-group sub-projects. In this way, ecological creativity has not reached its full potential as an ecology of well-being because the rich connections and relationships essential to this well-being have not yet been fully realised. This paper explores the potential of using the NVivo qualitative analysis software package to bring together the creative-arts sub-projects of ‘Flows & Catchments’, as a way of fostering an ecology of well-being out of a currently dispersed ecological creativity.

Australia national survey of graduates from 1993 onward. In addition to quantitative items, the CEQ also includes an invitation to respondents to write open-ended comments on the best aspects (BA) of their university course experience and those most needing improvement (NI). These responses provide a rich source additional information that can help in understanding what students had in mind when agreeing or disagreeing with the CEQ response items. Based on more than 160,000 comments from students graduating from 14 Australian universities over the period 2001-2004, Scott (2006) developed a five domain model (Outcomes, Staff, Course design, Assessment and Support) for the classification of CEQ comments, as well as a software package (CEQuery) to automate the analysis of CEQ BA and NI comment data. While computer automated comment analysis is convenient, there are a number of known limitations to this approach, and where the number of student comments is not large, manual coding/classification is a viable, and arguably superior, approach.

This paper presents an energy management software package and the supporting energy information automation system to enable the short stay accommodation industry to determine actual residents' energy consumption. The proposed energy management system is used to develop a 'novel deal' method in short stay accommodation based on integration of the room level energy costs into the billing system. This system has the potential to increase energy efficiency in the short stay accommodation industry by actively engaging the residents in the energy saving process. The system is economically and environmentally sustainable and can achieve a high level of energy efficiency with low expenses. The proposed model is also effective for carbon mitigation, and offers a value proposition for all the parties in the short stay accommodation industry, including owners and residents. The paper presents a software system to capture room level energy consumption information and to present the detail of consumed energy information in the resident's accommodation bill. The presented information includes energy consumption profile, the greenhouse gas emission profile, and the cost associated to the energy related services.

Roll forming is a cost and energy efficient process for the manufacture of Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) structural and crash components in the automotive industry. The conventional roll forming process is limited to component having constant cross-section, while the recently deveoped Flexible Roll Forming (FRF) process allows the production of components in which the section varies over the length of the aprt; this permits optimization in terms of strength and weight. There has been an uptake in FRF in the heavy vehicle industry for the production of long and high strength structural parts, but passenger car bodies are more complex and generally parts require variations in width and also in depth. The widespread application of FRF in the automotive industy therefore requires the forming of components that have intricate variations in profile depth over the length of the part.
This work is a first comprehensive study of the FRF of high strength structural components with variable depth. For this, the FRF of an automotive bumper section is analyzed numerically using the commercial software package COPRA® FEA RF. A detailed analysis of the distribution and history of plastic strain in longitudinal, transcerse and thickness directions is performed and related to the shape defects observed in the proecss. The analysis shows that when forming variable depth components, zones of compressive longitudinal strain exist that lead to wrinkling defects. These can be reduced by applying additional flange contact during the operation. In general the current work suggests that the FRF of high strength components with variable depth is possible and can compete with other forming methods currently used in the automotive industry.

Support for the saying “a picture is worth a 1000 words’ has been consistently found within statistics education. Graphical images are effective in promoting understanding and communication of statistical concepts and results to a variety of audiences. The computer software package, AMOS, was developed for the analysis of structural equation models (SEM) and has a user-friendly graphical interface. However, courses in SEM are generally found only at the postgraduate level. This paper argues that the graphical interface of AMOS has the potential to enhance conceptual understanding and communication of results in undergraduate statistical courses. More specifically, approaches to the teaching and communication of results of multiple regression models when using SPSS and AMOS will be examined and compared.

This paper reports on an experiment analysing the development of students' understanding of accounting concepts by comparing three different teaching strategies: a traditional tutorial (workshop), exposure to a commercial accounting package, and a control group. Findings indicate that integration of a commercially available accounting package into accounting curricula does not significantly enhance students' understanding of accounting concepts. As this experiment employed a randomised allocation of students to groups, a control group, and identical pre and posttests, these findings are robust to alternative explanations such as learning styles and motivation.

Developers sometimes maintain an internal copy of another software or fork development of an existing project. This practice can lead to software vulnerabilities when the embedded code is not kept up to date with upstream sources. We propose an automated solution to identify clones of packages without any prior knowledge of these relationships. We then correlate clones with vulnerability information to identify outstanding security problems. This approach motivates software maintainers to avoid using cloned packages and link against system wide libraries. We propose over 30 novel features that enable us to use to use pattern classification to accurately identify package-level clones. To our knowledge, we are the first to consider clone detection as a classification problem. Our results show our system, Clonewise, compares well to manually tracked databases. Based on our work, over 30 unknown package clones and vulnerabilities have been identified and patched.

This paper provides an account of the way Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems change over time. These changes are conceptualized as a biographical accumulation that gives the specific ERP technology its present character, attributes and historicity. The paper presents empirics from the implementation of an ERP package within an Australasian organization. Changes to the ERP take place as a result of imperatives which arise during the implementation. Our research and evidence then extends to a different time and place where the new release of the ERP software was being `sold' to client firms in the UK. We theorize our research through a lens based on ideas from actor network theory (ANT) and the concept of biography. The paper seeks to contribute an additional theorization for ANT studies that places the focus on the technological object and frees it from the ties of the implementation setting. The research illustrates the opportunistic and contested fabrication of a technological object and emphasizes the stability as well as the fluidity of its technologic.
