In this intriguing and witty survey, Paul Carter tours the cultural history of agoraphobia. By analyzing the way people have negotiated open spaces from Greek and Roman times to the present day, he finds that "space fear" ultimately results from the inhibition of movement, and shows how this discovery can provide lessons for today’s urban planners and architects. Along the way, he asks why Freud repressed his agoraphobia, and examines the work of various theorists including Le Corbusier, Benjamin, and R.D. Laing, as well as artists such as Munch, Lapique, and Giacometti.

The thesis comprises a novel and exegesis. The novel explores migration and spirituality in a family saga that moves from the islands of Sicily to the Australian Mallee desert. The exegesis concentrates on the "unknowability" of the creative process, which is explored through the journey motif.

Investigations into the parallel synthesis of selected analogues of a structurally unique pyrrole-oxazole analogue of the pyrrole insecticide pirate, are reported. Acylaminoketone salts were obtained from ketobromides in moderate to high yields and excellent purity. A number of N-tosyl pyrroles were obtained; however, formation of the target acyl tosyl pyrroles was thwarted by the stereoelectronic effects of the pyrrole substituents. During the pyrrole subunit chemistry, an interesting pyrrole derivative, vinyl pyrrole, was isolated. By restricting diversity to the aryl subunit, the parallel synthesis of selected pyrrole-oxazoles in moderate purity, was achieved when electron-donating or no groups were present on the aryl ring.

The pyrrole oxazole 4 is a novel analogue of the broad-spectrum insecticide and miticide pirate 2. The expedient synthesis of pyrrole oxazole 4 in six steps from pyrrole is reported using a synthetic route that could have potential for the solution-phase combinatorial synthesis of analogues. Preliminary biological evaluation of the protected pyrrole oxazole 4 (LD50 1.13 μg mL–1) and the deprotected pyrrole oxazole 5 (LD50 1.06 μg mL–1) for potential cytotoxicity was carried out.

Ko Un is one of South Korea's most important writers of the past 50 years, and a poet whose work provides important insights into crucial linkages between language, identity and community. He lived through, chronicled and critically engaged most of the traumatic events his nation faced during the last century: a brutal colonial occupation by Japan; the division of the peninsula into communist North and capitalist South; an unusually devastating fraternal war; the integration of the divided peninsula into global Cold War politics; periods of authoritarian rule on both sides; and the more recent challenge to promote reconciliation. Some of these episodes challenged the very existence of Korea as a people, nation and state. Ko Un's poetry was part of a larger effort to regain a sense of being and national identity in the face of turmoil, war and globalisation. We argue that by engaging with these highly political issues Ko Un's work provides important clues about how to articulate notions of identity and community in a way that empathetically portrays other people and their identities. In doing so he offers an alternative to the prevailing inside/outside logic that often leads to problematic forms of nationalism.

The preparation and characterization of a series of novel salts, based on the N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium or quaternary ammonium organic cations coupled with sulfonate type anions, namely the mesylate (CH3SO3) and tosylate (CH3C6H4SO3) anions are reported. These salts are analogues of the previously described organic cation bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TFSA) salts that form useful ionic liquids of interest in “Green” synthesis. Several of the salts are liquid below 50 °C, e.g. tributylhexylammonium tosylate and ethylmethylpyrrolidinium mesylate and one is liquid at and below room temperature (tributylhexylammonium mesylate). These new salts have a cost advantage over salts of the TFSA, PF6 and CF3SO3 anions. Electrochemical and thermal properties have been investigated. The salts are stable to beyond 100 °C and exhibit electrochemical potential windows of at least ±2 V vs. Ag/Ag+. Some of the salts exhibit multiple crystalline phases below their melting points, potentially indicative of plastic crystal behaviour, whilst others showed more simple solid–liquid behaviour. Many of the salts were found to be glass forming.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of a novel ocular lubricant compared with a commercially marketed ocular lubricant in a group of noncontact lens wearers currently using over-the-counter products for the management of symptoms of moderate to severe dry eye.

Methods: This was a prospective, double-masked study that randomized 110 subjects in a ratio of 1:1 to receive a novel ocular lubricant (test group) or a marketed ocular lubricant (control group). Subjects were instructed to instill the lubricant eye drops at least three times daily. After enrollment, subjects were evaluated at baseline and at 7 and 30 days. They were also required to complete a series of home-based subjective questionnaires after 15 days. Main outcomes were subjective symptoms and objective clinical assessment at 7 and 30 days.

Results: The test group had higher overall comfort ratings than the control group (P = 0.012). Seventy-one percent of the test group and 57% of the control group said the drops used “somewhat” or “definitely” improved ocular comfort; 62% of the test group had greater end-of-day comfort compared with 45% of the control group (P = 0.015). There were no between-group differences in visual acuity, tear quality or quantity, corneal staining, conjunctival staining, or bulbar and limbal conjunctival hyperemia.

Conclusions: The novel ocular lubricant offers equivalent or superior comfort compared with a marketed lubricant eye drop. Objective clinical outcomes were not statistically significantly different between the two groups.
