Osteoporosis is a major public health problem because of the morbidity and mortality associated with fracture. Minimizing the risk of fracture is the primary objective of osteoporosis management. The role of exercise in osteoporosis management is to increase and maintain peak bone density and reduce the rate of bone loss and the risk of falling. This article provides recommendations focusing on a life-span approach to minimizing the risk of fracture associated with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis prevention begins in childhood, when exercise can increase peak bone strength. In young adults, it can maintain peak bone mineral density. In elderly individuals, physical activity can slow bone loss and improve fitness and muscle strength, helping prevent falls and lower the risk of fracture. Exercise goals for individuals with osteoporosis should include reducing pain, increasing mobility, and improving muscle endurance, balance, and stability in order to improve the quality of life and reduce the risk of falling. Thus, exercise plays a significant part in reducing fractures in later life.

Children are less efficient thermoregulators than are adults. During exercise, sweat evaporation is the most important physiological means of cooling the body. The sweat response in children, however, is less efficient than in adults, so children dissipate less heat though evaporative sweating and more through convection (the loss of heat through the skin) plus radiation. Children and adolescents with high levels of body fat and heavy builds are more susceptible to heat stress because they dissipate body heat less efficiently. Maintaining adequate hydration is crucial for preventing heat stress, Although water is often described as the best choice of fluid, studies on voluntary drinking habits and flavor preferences in children and adolescents suggest that greater consumption occurs when sports drinks are offered instead of water. Although a child's sweat contains less sodium and chloride than an adult's does, there appears to be no evidence that a child's performance improves when given beverages more diluted than those currently recommended for adults, More information is necessary to identify the optimal electrolyte and carbohydrate content of sports drinks for young athletes.

Transcription of interview data is a common practice in qualitative health research. However, there has been little discussion of the techniques of transcription and the issues inherent in the use of transcription as a strategy for managing qualitative data in nursing publications. The process of transcription may disclose or obscure certain information. Researchers need to question practices of transcription that have been taken for granted and make transparent the processes used to preserve the integrity of data. This paper first examines research reported in nursing and allied health journals employing interviews for data collection and the attention given to the transcription phase. It then deals with issues of concern regarding the transcription of interviews, and offers suggestions for promoting validity.

Children's eating behaviours are fundamental to their health. Dietary surveys indicate that children's food consumption is likely to promote a range of diet-related diseases, including overweight and obesity, which are associated with a range of psychosocial and physical disorders. With the prevalence of overweight and obesity rapidly increasing, opportunities for informed prevention have become a focus of strategy. Diet is recognised as important in the genesis of obesity. We present data that demonstrate that eating behaviours are likely to be established early in life and may be maintained into adulthood. We review literature that shows that children's eating behaviours are influenced by the family food environment. These findings suggest that the family environment should be considered in developing obesity prevention strategy for children, yet the current strategy focuses primarily on the school environment. Those factors in the family environment that appear to be important include: parental food preferences and beliefs, children's food exposure; role modelling; media exposure; and child-parent interactions around food. However, the existing data are based on small scale and unrepresentative US samples. At a population level, we have few insights regarding family food environments and consequently little information about how such environments influence children's eating behaviours and thus their risk for obesity. We suggest research that may promote a better understanding of the role of family food environments as determinants of children's eating behaviour, and consider the implications for obesity prevention in Australia. The article explores the lived experiences of older women with a high commitment to exercise. The methods of investigation were in-depth interviews with 17 women fitness instructors for the over-50s and the author's observations as a participant in a variety of exercise programs. The subjective experience of embodiment of older women, the ways in which the body is constructed discursively, and the objective processes of aging are explored. The women's narratives are placed in the wider context of consumption, lifestyle, and identity construction. The study analyzes whether older women's commitment to exercise is a reflection of a climate of constraint, in which individuals seek to shape and manage the body to combat the effects of aging, or is one of empowerment and enablement. More important, the article explores the ways in which the women used fitness programs as a means of constructing intimacy, a sense of community, and satisfaction in interpersonal relations.

We present a new determining set, CZ, of Riemann invariants which possesses the minimum degree property. From an analysis on the possible independence of CZ, we are led to the division of all space-times into two distinct, invariantly characterized, classes: a general class MG+, and a special, singular class MS For each class, we provide an independent set of invariants (IG+) ⊂ CZ and IS ⊂ CZ, respectively) which, with the results of a sequel paper, will be shown to be algebraically complete.

We consider the existence of blocking semiovals in finite projective planes which have intersection sizes 1, m+1 or n+1 with the lines of the plane for $1 \leq m < n$. For those prime powers $q \leq 1024$, in almost all cases, we are able to show that, apart from a trivial example, no such blocking semioval exists in a projective plane of order q. We are also able to prove, for general q, that if q2+q+1 is a prime or three times a prime, then only the same trivial example can exist in a projective plane of order q.

We study the set CZ of invariants [Zakhary and Carminati, J. Math. Phys. 42, 1474 (2001)] for the class of space-times whose Ricci tensors possess a null eigenvector. We show that all cases are maximally backsolvable, in terms of sets of invariants from CZ, but that some cases are not completely backsolvable and these all possess an alignment between an eigenvector of the Ricci tensor with a repeated principal null vector of the Weyl tensor. We provide algebraically complete sets for each canonically different space-time and hence conclude with these results and those of a previous article [Carminati, Zakhary, and McLenaghan, J. Math. Phys. 43, 492 (2002)] that the CZ set is determining or maximal.

Introduction. Along the south coast of Australia, wetlands on the floodplains of lowland rivers and estuaries have been severely altered by agriculture and urbanization. Efforts to restore or rehabilitate these wetlands are hampered by insufficient knowledge of the original condition of these wetlands, or their variability in time and space. This research describes the macroinvertebrate community of wetlands on the floodplain of the Gellibrand River and estuary, which has suffered comparatively few human impacts. The aim of the research was to describe the variability of macroinvertebrate communities as a baseline for the future management of these wetlands, and to contribute to the general understanding of estuary-floodplain wetlands, thereby improving the basis for their management.

The Gellibrand River has a catchment area of approximately 1200 km2 draining the western slopes of the Otway Ranges, and entering the Southern Ocean at Princetown. From a mean annual flow of 315 000 mL, 25 000 mL are removed per annum for agricultural and domestic use (O'May & Wallace 2001), and flows are closer to natural regimes than most other Western Victorian rivers. The estuary is a bar-built, salt-wedge estuary that becomes completely blocked by the sand bar in most years, during summer and autumn. Over past decades, the estuary mouth has been opened artificially in most years. to prevent flooding of agricultural land and roads adjacent to the wetlands. At its maximum, the salt-wedge penetrates approximately 10 km upstream from the river mouth, but the estuary may also be completely fresh during high winter discharge
(Mckay 2000).

The wetlands surrounding Princetown cover 119 ha and are listed as nationally important (Environment Australia 2001). This listing regards the wetlands as an important habitat for animals at vulnerable stages of their life cycle and a refuge from adverse conditions, such as drought. They are a good example of coastal brackish and freshwater marshes, with an important ecological and hydrological role as part of a large wetland
complex.

The accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) method assumes a linear VO<sub>2</sub>-power relationship for exercise intensities increasing from below the lactate threshold (BLT) to above the lactate threshold (ALT). Factors that were likely to effect the linearity of the VO<sub>2</sub>-power regression and the precision of the estimated total energy demand (ETED) were investigated. These included the slow component of VO<sub>2</sub> kinetics (SC), a forced resting y-intercept and exercise intensities BLT and ALT. Criteria for linearity and precision included the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) of the VO<sub>2</sub>-power relationship, the length of the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the ETED and the standard error of the predicted value (SEP), respectively. Eight trained male and one trained female triathlete completed the required cycling tests to establish the AOD when pedalling at 80 rev/min. The influence of the SC on the linear extrapolation of the ETED was reduced by measuring VO<sub>2</sub> after three min of exercise. Measuring VO<sub>2</sub> at this time provided a new linear extrapolation method consisting of ten regression points spread evenly from BLT and ALT. This method produced an ETED with increased precision compared to using regression equations developed from intensities BLT with no forced y-intercept value; (95%CI (L), 0.70±0.26 versus 1.85±1.10, P<0.01; SEP(L/Watt), 0.07±0.02 versus 0.28±0.17; P<0.01). Including a forced y-intercept value with five regression points either BLT or ALT increased the precision of estimating the total energy demand to the same level as when using 10 regression points, (5 points BLT + y-intercept versus 5 points ALT + y-intercept versus 10 points; 95%CI(l), 0.61±0.32, 0.87±0.40, 0.70±0.26; SEP(L/Watt), 0.07±0.03, 0.08±0.04, 0.07±0.02; p>0.05). The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of pedal rate on the precision and quantification of the accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD). Eight trained male triathletes completed a lactate threshold test, VO2 peak test, 10 x 3 min submaximal exercise bouts and a high-intensity exercise bout, all performed at 80 and 120 rev/min. For both pedal rates the intensities for the sub-maximal and high-intensity tests were relative to the lactate threshold and VO2 peak work rates. The VO2-power regressions were calculated using 5 intensities from above the lactate threshold combined with a y intercept value with VO2 measured after 3 min of exercise. For the 120 compared to the 80 rev/min tests, the lactate threshold work rate (255±13 versus 276±47 Watts) (p<0.01) and VO2 peak work rate (352±17 versus 382±20, Watts) (p<0.05) were lower at 120 rev/m. Conversely, the VO2 peak and the VO2 measured during the exhaustive exercise were the same for both pedal rates (p>0.05). Using linear regression modelling the slope of the VO2-power regression (0.0112 versus 0.010 L/Watt) (p<0.01), the estimated total energy demand (ETED) (5.13±0.75 versus 4.89±0.88 L/min) and the AOD (4.27±0.94 versus 3.66±1.25 L) (p<0.05) were greater at 120 rev/m. However, the 95% confidence interval for the ETED and the standard error of the predicted value were the same for both pedal rates (p>0.05). Our results demonstrate that pedal rate effects the size but not the precision of the calculated AOD and should therefore be considered when developing an AOD protocol.

Recognizing a class of movements as belonging to a "nominal" action category, such as walking, running, or throwing, is a fundamental human ability. Three experiments were undertaken to test the hypothesis that common ("prototypical") features of moving displays could be learned by observation. Participants viewed moving stick-figure displays resembling forearm flexion movements in the saggital plane. Four displays (presentation displays) were first presented in which one or more movement dimensions were combined with 2 respective cues: direction (up, down), speed (fast, slow), and extent (long, short). Eight test displays were then shown, and the observer indicated whether each test display was like or unlike those previously seen. The results showed that without corrective feedback, a single cue (e.g., up or down) could be correctly recognized, on average, with the proportion correct between .66 and .87. When two cues were manipulated (e.g., up and slow), recognition accuracy remained high, ranging between .72 and .89. Three-cue displays were also easily identified. These results provide the first empirical demonstration of action-prototype learning for categories of human action and show how apparently complex kinematic patterns can be categorized in terms of common features or cues. It was also shown that probability of correct recognition of kinematic properties was reduced when the set of 4 presentation displays were more variable with respect to their shared kinematic property, such as speed or amplitude. Finally, while not conclusive, the results (from 2 of the 3 experiments) did suggest that similarity (or "likeness") with respect to a common kinematic property (or properties) is more easily recognized than dissimilarity.

Theories explaining the mechanics of sport sponsorship relationships arc underdeveloped (Gilbert, 1 988; Hock, Gendall, & West, 1990; Pope, 1 998), bolstered by studies lacking systematic methods (Kuzma, Shanklin, & McCall, 1993) and tending toward broad, descriptive, macro-level analysis (Sandler & Shani, 1993). This paper attempts to redress this empirical chasm in a small way by examining an element of the sponsorship relationship. Specifically this paper explores the importance of one particular mode of sponsorship delivery: the location of a venue containing sponsor affiliations or what has been named location dependency. Location dependency of sport sponsors has been shown to be a pivotal determinant when devising sponsorship proposals or when assessing the attractiveness of a sponsorship opportunity (Wester- beek, 2000). Factor analysis was used to determine if sponsors' response patterns would deliver a number of constructs that could be related to the concept of location dependency. Factor analysis revealed five factors that principally reinforced the notion of location dependency of sponsorship. T-tests delivered significant differences between location dependent and location independent sponsors on some of the factors. The results of this study suggest that appreciating the concept of location dependency may assist companies in the effective discharge of their sponsorship decisions.
