This paper describes a new experiment for studying crevice corrosion. A wire beam electrode was employed in this experiment to measure electrochemical parameters directly from crevice area and these parameters were used to calculate instantaneous crevice corrosion kinetics. A clear correlation between calculated corrosion depth map and real corrosion appearance was obtained.

The performance of surface finishes as a function of the pH of the utilized plating solution was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. In addition, the surface finishes were examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), and the contact angle of the liquid/solid interface was recorded. NiP films on copper substrates with gold coatings exhibited their highest coating performance at pH 5. This was attributed to the films having the highest protective efficiency and charge transfer resistance, lowest porosity value, and highest contact angle among those examined as a result of the strongly preferred Au(111) orientation and the improved surface wettability.

The alloying effect of a small amount of nickel on low alloy steel for application to flue gas desulfurization(FGD) systems was studied. The structural characteristics of the rust layer were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The electrochemical properties were examined by means of potentiostatic polarization test, potentiodynamic polarization test, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) in a modified green death solution of 16.9 vol.% H2SO4+0.35 vol.% HC1 at 60°C and an acid rain solution of 6.25 X 10-5 M H2S04+5.5 X 10-3 M NaCl at room temperature. It was found that as the amount of nickel increased, the corrosion rate increased in the modified green death solution, which seemed to result from micro-galvanic corrosion between NiS and alloy matrix. In acid rain solution, the corrosion rate decreased as the amount of nickel increased due to the repulsive force of NiFe204 rust against Cl-ions by electronegativity.

A novel electrochemically integrated multi-electrode array namely the wire beam electrode(WBE) in combination with noise signatures analysis has been designed to monitor pittingcorrosion of one of the best corrosion resistance ferrous alloys, stainless steel type 316L.From the direct correlation of electrochemical potential noise signatures and galvanic currentdistribution maps during pitting corrosion processes, two characteristic noise patterns wereobserved prior to stable pit formation: (i) the characteristic ‘peak’ of rapid potential transient,towards less negative direction, followed by recovery (termed noise signature I) was found tocorrelate with the disappearance of unstable anode; (ii) the characteristic noise pattern ofquick potential changes towards less negative direction followed by no recovery (termed noisesignature II) was found to correspond with the massive disappearance of minor anodes leadingto formation of highly localized major anodes in the galvanic current distribution maps.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion product scales and their effects on further CO2 corrosion. Objectives were to determine the suitability of EIS for studying corrosion scales and to investigate the influence of environmental factors on scale formation. EIS provided useful information about protective abilities and electrochemical properties of corrosion scales. CO2 corrosion scales formed at high-temperature and pressure provided better protection than those formed at low-temperature and pressure. The level of protection of the scale formed at higher temperature and pressure increased with exposure time. EIS results were compared with coupon weight-loss measurements. Scales were analyzed using a combination of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy
