Millions of data capable mobile devices are currently in use around the world enabled by the growing acceptance of Internet over wireless networks. However, security mechanisms still remain nascent. Security plays a crucial role in facilitating the level of trust users place on mobile devices and applications. To effectively diffuse the mobile devices in the marketplace, sufficient levels of trust has to be established in the underlying security of mobile devices and applications. This paper is an appraisal of recent issues and emerging trends regarding mobile security, within the context of conducting mobile commerce via mobile networks by individual consumers and businesses.

Global mCommerce revenues are expected to grow from $400 million in 2000, to 22.2 billion by 2005 (Raczkowski, 2002) mCommerce is a key driver in developing the global information society, with applications emerging in numerous areas including banking, financial services, security services and shopping (Khalifa and Cheng, 2002). With optimistic projections regarding its growth, many researchers are actively determining the future of mCommerce. In this paper, we have tried to synthesise some predictions and evolving definitions, explored security as a critical impediment and developing solutions; investigated the mPayment scenario; and derived a futuristic research framework. Specifically, we have attempted to capture the moving mCommerce scenario in present time, with a special focus into mPayments.

With the growing momentum of wireless revolution and mCommerce explosion, it is evident that mobile devices are becoming a critical component of the new digital economy. As mobile markets continue to mature, being able to pay using the mobile handset will be key to the development of next generation services. The current market penetration of mobile phones in conjunction with the expected growth of mCommerce, offers high potential for mPayment growth over the next few years. When mobile phones are equipped with a device to protect personal information, the security level of an entire service, including the network, improves considerably. However, the mobile payments market today is typical of an emergent one, encumbered with an abundance of approaches and concepts that may not interoperate. In this paper, we have explored the broad range of available mPayment methods, emerging issues in standardization, security and some proposed/ existing solutions.

Parallel file systems offer improved performance over traditional file systems by allowing processes to access file data, stored over a number of disks, in parallel. When this file is to be accessed by many processes at the same time for reading and writing, the problem of maintaining file consistency is introduced. The general approach to maintaining file consistency is through the use locks which grant a single process exclusive access to the file. Existing studies have found parallel file systems and associated applications rarely experience conflict, resulting in unnecessary overheads from locks being acquired. This paper examines an alternate approach to maintaining file consistency, which is based on optimistic concurrency control. This approach was shown to have a much smaller overhead when compared with traditional lock-based approaches; especially in situations when there is little contention. This paper presents the design, implementation and initial testing results of an optimistic based concurrency control mechanism.

Sensor networks, once deployed, are expected to continue to function unmanned. However, energy of the sensors is typically unrenewable thus making it a very scarce resource. Therefore, in order to extend the life of the sensor networks for the duration of a particular mission, energy has to be managed wisely. In this paper, we consider the problem of energy conservation for grid-based sensor networks. A wireless sensor network architecture that is based on mobile base station is presented. Based on this architecture, we propose an asynchronous duty-cycle scheduling scheme for extending the lifetime of the grid-based wireless sensor networks.

A feasibility study for handling the partial recrystallisation in multi-pass hot deformation where the heterogeneity of microstructure of deformed austenite is inherently accompanied is presented. The proposed model is based on modification of the conventional model in which the microstructure of deformed austenite at each pass is simply taken as being homogeneous during the multi-pass deformation. The usefulness of the modified model has been demonstrated by applying it to a four-pass oval–round (or round–oval) rod rolling sequence. The recrystallised fraction, austenite grain size (AGS) and mean flow stress at each pass computed from the modified model has been compared with those from the conventional model. The result showed that the recrystallisation behaviour and evolution of AGS at a given pass were dependent on the modelling method of the partial recrystallisation in the multi-pass rolling for the case studied. As the rolling speed increased, the difference between the mean flow stresses calculated by the conventional model and the proposed model was gradually larger in accordance with the contribution of partial recrystallisation.

Structural investigations, i.e. solid-state (X-ray), solution (1H NMR) and gas-phase (theoretical), on molecules with the general formula MeOC(S)N(H)C6H4-4-Y: Y = H (1), NO2 (2), C(O)Me (3), Cl (4) have shown a general preference for the adoption of an E-conformation about the central C–N bond. Such a conformation allows for the formation of a dimeric hydrogen-bonded {H–N–C=S}2 synthon as the building block. In the cases of 1–3, additional C–H...O interactions give rise to the formation of tapes of varying topology. A theoretical analysis shows that the preference for the E-conformation is about the same as the crystal packing stabilisation energy and consistent with this, the compound with Y = C(O)OMe, (5), adopts a Z-conformation in the solid-state that facilitates the formation of N–H...O, C–H...O and C–H...S interactions, leading to a layer structure. Global crystal packing considerations are shown to be imperative in dictating the conformational form of molecules 1–5.
