Polyaniline (PANI) nanofibres are synthesized by interfacial polymerization and their electrochemical performance is evaluated in an aqueous redox supercapacitor constituted as a two-electrode cell. The initial specific capacitance of the cell is 554 F g−1 at a constant current of 1.0 A g−1, but this value rapidly decreases on continuous cycling. In order to improve the cycleability of the supercapacitor, a composite of polyaniline with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is synthesized by in situ chemical polymerization. Its capacitive behaviour is evaluated in a similar cell configuration. A high initial specific capacitance of 606 F g−1 is obtained with good retention on cycling. In both supercapacitors, the effect of charging potential on cycling performances is investigated.

Flexible energy devices with high performance and long-term stability are highly promising for applications in portable electronics, but remain challenging to develop. As an electrode material for pseudo-supercapacitors, conducting polymers typically show higher energy storage ability over carbon materials and larger conductivity than transition-metal oxides. However, conducting polymer-based supercapacitors often have poor cycling stability, attributable to the structural rupture caused by the large volume contrast between doping and de-doping states, which has been the main obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare a flexible, binder-free, self-supported polypyrrole (PPy) supercapacitor electrode with high cycling stability through using novel, hollow PPy nanofibers with porous capsular walls as a film-forming material. The unique fiber structure and capsular walls provide the PPy film with enough free-space to adapt to volume variation during doping/de-doping, leading to super-high cycling stability (capacitance retention > 90% after 11000 charge-discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 A g-1) and high rate capability (capacitance retention ∼ 82.1% at a current density in the range of 0.25-10 A g-1).

In this paper, six types of typical bio-wastes are used to prepare activated carbons (ACs) by high-temperature carbonization and activation with KOH. A novel electrochemical sensor for rutin was developed based on a peanut shell-derived activated carbon and gold nanoparticle composite modified glassy carbon electrode (P-AC/AuNPs/GCE). The as-synthesized ACs and composites were characterized by a variety of physicochemical techniques. The proposed sensor exhibits ideal electrochemical behavior for rutin with a wide linear range, low detection limit, and good selectivity. The desirable electrochemical performance enables the biomass-derived ACs and their composites to act as new sources of carbonaceous materials for electrochemical sensors.

Porous carbon nanotube/polyvinylidene fluoride (CNT/PVDF) composite material can be fabricated via formation and freeze-drying of a gel. The field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and pore size distribution analysis reveal that the introduction of a small amount of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can effectively increase the surface roughness and porosity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Contact angle measurements of water and oil indicate that the as-obtained composite material is superhydrophobic and superoleophilic. Further experiments demonstrate that these composite material can be efficiently used to separate/absorb the insoluble oil from oil polluted water as membrane/absorbent. Most importantly, the electrical conductivity of such porous CNT/PVDF composite material can be tuned by adjusting the mass ratio of CNT to PVDF without obviously changing the superhydrophobicity or superoleophilicity. The unique properties of the porous CNT/PVDF composite material make it a promising candidate for oil-polluted water treatment as well as water-repellent catalyst-supporting electrode material.

Chemical doping with foreign atoms is an effective approach to significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of the carbon materials. Herein, sulfur-doped three-dimensional (3D) porous reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hollow nanosphere frameworks (S-PGHS) are fabricated by directly annealing graphene oxide (GO)-encapsulated amino-modified SiO2 nanoparticles with dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS), followed by hydrofluoric acid etching. The XPS and Raman spectra confirmed that sulfur atoms were successfully introduced into the PGHS framework via covalent bonds. The as-prepared S-PGHS has been demonstrated to be an efficient metal-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the activity comparable to that of commercial Pt/C (40%) and much better methanol tolerance and durability, and to be a supercapacitor electrode material with a high specific capacitance of 343 F g(-1), good rate capability and excellent cycling stability in aqueous electrolytes. The impressive performance for ORR and supercapacitors is believed to be due to the synergistic effect caused by sulfur-doping enhancing the electrochemical activity and 3D porous hollow nanosphere framework structures facilitating ion diffusion and electronic transfer.

We report the development of a stacked electrode supercapacitor cell using stainless steel meshes as the current collectors and optimised single walled nanotubes (SWNT)-microwave exfoliated graphene oxide (mw rGO) composites as the electrode material. The introduction of mw rGO into a SWNT matrix creates an intertwined porous structure that enhances the electroactive surface area and capacitive performance due to the 3-D hierarchical structure that is formed. The composite structure was optimised by varying the weight ratio of the SWNTs and mw rGO. The best performing ratio was the 90% SWNT-10% mw rGO electrode which achieved a specific capacitance of 306 F g-1 (3 electrode measurement calculated at 20 mV s-1). The 90% SWNT-10% mw rGO was then fabricated into a stacked electrode configuration (SEC) which significantly enhanced the electrode performance per volume (1.43 mW h cm-3, & 6.25 W cm-3). Device testing showed excellent switching capability up to 10 A g-1, and very good stability over 10000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 with 93% capacity retention. © the Partner Organisations 2014.

Nitrogen-functionalized carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) were prepared by carbonizing polypyrrole (PPy)-coated cellulose NFs, which were obtained by electrospinning, deacetylation of electrospun cellulose acetate NFs, and PPy polymerization. Supercapacitor electrodes prepared from N-CNFs and a mixture of N-CNFs and Ni(OH)2 showed specific capacitances of ∼236 and ∼1045 F g(-1), respectively. An asymmetric supercapacitor was further fabricated using N-CNFs/Ni(OH)2 and N-CNFs as positive and negative electrodes. The supercapacitor device had a working voltage of 1.6 V in aqueous KOH solution (6.0 M) with an energy density as high as ∼51 (W h) kg(-1) and a maximum power density of ∼117 kW kg(-1). The device had excellent cycle lifetime, which retained ∼84% specific capacitance after 5000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry scans. N-CNFs derived from electrospun cellulose may be useful as an electrode material for development of high-performance supercapacitors and other energy storage devices.

Although metal dithiocarbamate complexes have been studied extensively, there is in sate cases a distinct lack of data concerning redox properties and the products thereof. This is particularly true for complexes of the late transition and main group metals which are important in agriculture, industry, and chemical analysis. Hence, using electrochemical techniques, the redox behaviour of dithiocarbamate complexes of zinc, cadmium, mercury, lead, and tellurium has been examined. The products of oxidation and reduction have also been characterized by spectroscopic techniques (NMR, EPR, UV, and IR), mass spectrometry, conductivity, and Where possible, crystallographic study of an isolated compound. The species studied were without exception labile with the result that electrochemistry at mercury electrodes was influenced by the great stability of the mercury dithiocarbamate (Hg(RR’dtc) 2) complexes. Investigation of the latter showed that oxidative processes in the presence of mercury led to a new class of expounds: polymeric mercury dithiocarbamato cations. Oily one of these could be isolated as a solid, with the formula [Hg5(RR’dtc) 8](C104)2 For R=R’=ethyl the crystal structure was determined. For other metal dithiocarbamates the electrochemical behaviour at mercury electrodes in many ways paralleled that of the mercury analogues. Thus oxidative processes involved oxidation of electrode mercury to form mixed metal cationic species. Polarographic reduction led to the metal amalgam, usually via formation of mercury dithiocarbamate. Electrochemical studies at inert electrode materials such as platinum yielded distinctly different responses, with both oxidation and reduction being more difficult. Oxidation products at platinum electrodes gave identical polarographic responses to those firm mercury electrodes due to rapid interaction of the former with electrode mercury. The results are in sharp contrast to much of the previous work on transition metal dithiocarbamates for which electrochemical redox processes are often metal based arid not explicated by interaction with the electrode material.

Electrochemical synthesis of a tri-layer polypyrrole based actuator optimized for performance was reported. The 0.05 M pyrrole and 0.05 M tetrabutylammonium hexaflurophosphate in propylene carbonate (PC) yielded the optimum performance and stability. The force produced ranged from 0.2 to 0.4mN. Cyclic deflection tests on PC based actuators for 3 hours indicated that the displacement decreased by 60%. PC based actuator had a longer operating time, exceeding 3 hours, compared to acetonitrile based actuators. A triple-layer model of the polymer actuator was developed based on the classic bending beam theory by considering strain electrode material. A tri-layer actuator was fabricated [4, 6], by initially sputter coating a PVDF film with approximately 100nm of gold layer, resulting in a conductive film with a surface resistance of 8-10Ω. The PVDF film was about ~145µm thick had an approximate pore size of 45μm. A solution containing 0.05M distilled pyrrole monomer, 0.05M (TBAPF6) and 1% (w/w) distilled water in PC (propylene carbonate) solution was purged with nitrogen for 15 minutes. The continuity between PPy and PVDF. Results predicted by the model were in good agreement with the experimental data.

The two-stage procedure of ball milling and annealing in air represents a prospective method of preparing nanorods of V2O5 with electrochemical properties suitable for the application in lithium-ion batteries. Commercially purchased V2O5 powder is milled in a ball mill as the first step of the synthesis. The as-milled precursor is subsequently annealed in air to produce the morphology of nanorods via solid-state recrystallization. We have recently investigated intermediate stages of the formation of nanorods, and this paper summarizes the synthesis method including the description of the current understanding of the growth mechanism. The obtained V2O5 nanorods have been assessed as an electrode material for both anodes and cathodes of lithium-ion batteries. When used in cathodes, the nanorods demonstrate a better retention of capacity upon cycling than that of the commercially available powder of V2O5. When used in anodes, the performances of nanorods and the reference V2O5 powder are similar to a large extent, which is related to a different operating mechanism of V2O5 in anodes. The experimentally observed capacity of V2O5 nanorods in an anode has stabilized at the level of about 450 mAh/g after few cycles.

Electrochemical studies on the Fc + e− Fc+ (Fc = ferrocene) process have been undertaken via the oxidation of Fc and reduction of Fc+ as the hexafluorophosphate (PF6−) or tetrafluoroborate (BF4−) salts and their mixtures in three ionic liquids (ILs) (1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate). Data obtained at macro- and microdisk electrodes using conventional dc and Fourier-transformed large-amplitude ac (FT-ac) voltammetry reveal that diffusion coefficients for Fc and Fc+ differ significantly and are a function of the Fc and Fc+ concentration, in contrast to findings in molecular solvents with 0.1 M added supporting electrolyte media. Thus, the Faradaic currents associated with the oxidation of Fc (Fc0/+) and reduction of FcPF6 or FcBF4 (Fc+/0) when both Fc and Fc+ are simultaneously present in the ILs differ from values obtained when individual Fc and Fc+ solutions are used. The voltammetry for both the Fc0/+ and Fc+/0 processes exhibited near-Nernstian behavior at a glassy carbon macrodisk electrode and a platinum microdisk electrode, when each process was studied individually in the ILs. As expected, the reversible formal potentials (E°′) and diffusion coefficients (D) at 23 ± 1 °C were independent of the electrode material and concentration. However, when Fc and FcPF6 or FcBF4 were both present, alterations to the mass transport process occurred and apparent D values calculated for Fc and Fc+ were found to be about 25−39% and 32−42% larger, respectively, than those determined from individual solutions. The apparent value of the double layer capacitance determined by FT-ac voltammetry from individual and mixed Fc and Fc+ conditions at the GC electrode was also a function of concentration. Double layer capacitance values increased significantly with the concentration of Fc and FcPF6 or FcBF4 when species were studied individually or simultaneously, but had a larger magnitude under conditions where both species were present. Variation in the structure of the ILs and hence mobilities of the ionic species, when Fc and FcPF6 or FcBF4 are simultaneously present, is considered to be the origin of the nonadditivity of the Faradaic currents and variation in capacitance.

Unexpected nonadditivity of currents encountered in the electrochemistry of mixtures of ferrocene (Fc) and cobaltocenium cation (Cc+) as the PF6 - salt has been investigated by direct current (dc) and Fourier-transformed alternating current (ac) cyclic voltammetry in two aprotic (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) and three protic (triethylammonium formate, bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium acetate, and triethylammonium acetate) ionic liquids (ILs). The voltammetry of the individual Fc0/+ and Cc+/0 couples always exhibits near-Nernstian behavior at glassy carbon and gold electrodes. As expected for an ideal process, the reversible formal potentials and diffusion coefficients at 23 ( 1 °C in each IL determined from measurement on individual Fc and Cc+ solutions were found to be independent of electrode material, concentration, and technique used for the measurement. However, when Fc and Cc+ were simultaneously present, the dc and ac peak currents per unit concentration for the Fc0/+ and Cc+/0 processes were found to be significantly enhanced in both aprotic and protic ILs. Thus, the apparent diffusion coefficient values calculated for Fc and Cc+ were respectively found to be about 25 and 35% larger than those determined individually in the aprotic ILs. A similar change in the Fc0/+ mass transport characteristics was observed upon addition of tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (Bu4NPF6), and the double layer capacitance also varied in distinctly different ways when Fc and Cc+ were present individually or in mixtures. Importantly, the nonadditivity of Faradaic current is not associated with a change in viscosity or from electron exchange as found when some solutes are added to ILs. The observation that the 1H NMR T1 relaxation times for the proton resonance in Cc+ also are modified in mixed systems implies that specific interaction with aggregates of the constituent IL ionic species giving rise to subtle structural changes plays an important role in modifying the mass transport, double layer characteristics, and dynamics when solutes of interest in this study are added to ILs. Analogous voltammetric changes were not observed in studies in organic solvent media containing 0.1 M added supporting electrolyte. Implications of the nonadditivity of Faradaic and capacitance terms in ILs are considered.

Glucose oxidase (GOx) is an important enzyme with great potential application for enzymatic sensing of glucose, in implantable biofuel cells for powering of medical devices in vivo and for large-scale biofuel cells for distributed energy generation. For these applications, immobilisation of GOx and direct transfer of electrons from the enzyme to an electrode material is required. This paper describes synthesis of conducting polymer (CP) structures in which GOx has been entrained such that direct electron transfer is possible between GOx and the CP. CP/enzyme composites prepared by other means show no evidence of such “wiring”. These materials therefore show promise for mediator-less electronic connection of GOx into easily produced electrodes for biosensing or biofuel cell applications.
