Two semiconducting hybrid gallium selenides, [Ga6Se9(C6H14N2)4][H2O] (1) and [C6H14N2][Ga4Se6(C6H14N2)2] (2), were prepared using a solvothermal method in the pres-ence of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane (1,2-DACH). Both materials consist of neutral inorganic layers, in which 1,2-DACH is co-valently bonded to gallium. In (1), the organic amine acts as a monodentate and a bidentate ligand, while in (2) bidentate and uncoordinated 1,2-DACH molecules coexist.

The synthesis and crystal structure of four gallium sulphide open frameworks, built from supertetrahedral clusters, are described. The structures of [C4NH12]6[Ga10S18][C4NH12]6[Ga10S18](1) and [C4NH12]12[Ga20S35.5(S3)0.5O](2) contain supertetrahedral T3 clusters, while in the isostructural compounds [C4NH12]16[Ga10S18M4Ga16S33][C4NH12]16[Ga10S18M4Ga16S33] (M=CoM=Co(3), Zn (4)), T3 and T4 clusters alternate. These materials exhibit three-dimensional frameworks, with topologies consisting of two interpenetrating diamond lattices, and contain over 50% of solvent accessible void space. UV–Vis diffuse reflectance measurements indicate that these compounds are semiconducting, with band gaps over the range 3.4–4.1 eV.

The title compound, potassium nickel(II) digallium tris-( phosphate) dihydrate, K[NiGa2(PO4)(3)(H2O)(2)], was synthesized hydrothermally. The structure is constructed from distorted trans-NiO4(H2O)2 octahedra linked through vertices and edges to GaO5 trigonal bipyramids and PO4 tetrahedra, forming a three-dimensional framework of formula [NiGa2(PO4)(3)(H2O)(2)](-). The K, Ni and one P atom lie on special positions (Wyckoff position 4e, site symmetry 2). There are two sets of channels within the framework, one running parallel to the [10 (1) over bar] direction and the other parallel to [001]. These intersect, forming a three-dimensional pore network in which the water molecules coordinated to the Ni atoms and the K+ ions required to charge balance the framework reside. The K+ ions lie in a highly distorted environment surrounded by ten O atoms, six of which are closer than 3.1 angstrom. The coordinated water molecules are within hydrogen-bonding distance to O atoms of bridging Ga-O-P groups.

The synthesis and characterisation of novel covalent organic-inorganic architectures containing organically-functionalised supertetrahedra is described. The structures of these unique materials consist of one-dimensional zigzag chains or of honeycomb-type layers, in which gallium-sulfide supertetrahedral clusters and dipyridyl ligands alternate.

We report here a unique chiral hybrid gallium sulfide, [NC2H8]2[Ga10S16(N2C12H12)(NC2H7)2] 1, consisting of helical chains of organically-functionalised supertetrahedral clusters which form quadruple-stranded helical nanotubes of ca. 3 nm diameter. This material therefore consists of discrete metal-organic nanotubes which, to the best of our knowledge, are extremely rare. Whilst solvothermal reactions involving 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene (DPE) resulted in the formation of such single-walled chiral nanotubes, the use of longer 4,4’-trimethylenedipyridine (TMP) ligands resulted in the synthesis of a two-dimensional hybrid gallium sulfide, [C5H6N]3[Ga10S16(OH)(N2C13H14)] 2 in which, for the first time, inorganic and organic linkages between supertetrahedral clusters coexist.

A series of heterometal substituted gallium phosphates, (N2C4H7)(0.5+x)[Me0.5+xGa2.5-x(PO4)(3)] (Me = Mn, Fe, Co and Zn, x approximate to 0.25), has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions at 433 K in ethylene glycol using I-methylimidazole as a templating agent and their structures determined at 150 K using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compounds are isostructural, crystallising in the monoclinic space group C 2/c, with lattice parameters ca. 15 x 13 x 15 angstrom and beta = 112 degrees, and adopt the laumontite framework type (LAU). The incorporation of 1-methylimidazole cations into the one-dimensional pore systems of these materials is about three quarters the uptake value obtained previously for the less-bulky amine cations of imidazole and pyridine in other MeGaPO laumontites, which have the formula (TH)[MeGa2(PO4)(3)] (Me = Mn, Fe, Co and Zn; T = C5H5N and C3N2H4). The size, shape and charge of the amine clearly influence both the metal-phosphate framework stoichiometry (i.e. Me2+:Ga3+ ratio) and the framework charge. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Fabrication of a thin praseodymium oxide film is of great technological interest in sensor, semiconducting, and ceramic industries. It is shown for the first time that an ultrathin layer of praseodymium oxide can be deposited on tin-doped indium oxide surface (ITO) by applying a negative sweeping voltage (cathodic electrodeposition) to the aqueous solution containing Pr(NO3)(3) and H2O2 using cyclic voltammetry, followed by annealing the film at 500 S C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction suggested that the predominant phase of the film is Pr6O11 and atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy characterizations indicated that this film is assembled with a monolayer coverage of spherical praseodymium oxide nanoparticles packed closely on the ITO surface. AC impedance measurements of the thin Pr6O11 film on ITO also revealed that the composite material displays a much higher electrical conductivity compared to the pure ITO. As a result, the material could suitably be used as a new chemical sensor. (c) 2006 The Electrochemical Society.

A combination of structural, physical and computational techniques including powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, electrical and thermal transport measurements, DFT calculations and 119Sn Mössbauer and X-ray photoelec-tron spectroscopies has been applied to Co3Sn2-xInxS2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) in an effort to understand the relationship between metal-atom ordering and physical properties as the Fermi level is systematically varied. Whilst solid solution behavior is found throughout the composition region, powder neutron diffraction reveals that indium preferentially occupies an inter-layer site over an alternative kagome-like intra-layer site. DFT calculations indicate that this ordering, which leads to a lowering of energy, is related to the dif-fering bonding properties of tin and indium. Spectroscopic data suggest that throughout the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 2, all ele-ments adopt oxidation states that are significantly reduced from expectations based on formal charges. Chemical substitution ena-bles the electrical transport properties to be controlled through tuning of the Fermi level within a region of the density of states, which comprises narrow bands of predominantly Co d-character. This leads to a compositionally-induced double metal-to-semiconductor-to-metal transition. The marked increase in the Seebeck coefficient as the semiconducting region is approached leads to a substantial improvement in the thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, which exhibits a maximum of ZT = 0.32 at 673 K. At 425 K, the figure of merit for phases in the region 0.8 ≤ x ≤ 0.85 is amongst the highest reported for sulphide phases, suggesting these materials may have applications in low-grade waste heat recovery.

The crystal structures of gallium sulfides prepared under solvothermal conditions, using 4-picoline as a solvent, are described. These materials contain [Ga10S16(NC6H7)4]2− clusters, in which the terminal S2− anions have been replaced by covalently bonded 4-picoline molecules. Whilst these phases contain isolated supertetrahedral clusters separated by organic moieties, linkage of such clusters via organic ligands is possible under suitable reaction conditions. These organically-functionalised supertetrahedra could therefore be used to design novel Metal-Organic frameworks (MOFs) in which the normally-encountered metal centers are replaced by supertetrahedral clusters.
