Let $A$ be an infinite Toeplitz matrix with a real symbol $f$ defined on $[-\pi, \pi]$. It is well known that the sequence of spectra of finite truncations $A_N$ of $A$ converges to the convex hull of the range of $f$. Recently, Levitin and Shargorodsky, on the basis of some numerical experiments, conjectured, for symbols $f$ with two discontinuities located at rational multiples of $\pi$, that the eigenvalues of $A_N$ located in the gap of $f$ asymptotically exhibit periodicity in $N$, and suggested a formula for the period as a function of the position of discontinuities. In this paper, we quantify and prove the analog of this conjecture for the matrix $A^2$ in a particular case when $f$ is a piecewise constant function taking values $-1$ and $1$.

We consider a quantity κ(Ω)—the distance to the origin from the null variety of the Fourier transform of the characteristic function of Ω. We conjecture, firstly, that κ(Ω) is maximised, among all convex balanced domains of a fixed volume, by a ball, and also that κ(Ω) is bounded above by the square root of the second Dirichlet eigenvalue of Ω. We prove some weaker versions of these conjectures in dimension two, as well as their validity for domains asymptotically close to a disk, and also discuss further links between κ(Ω) and the eigenvalues of the Laplacians.

A new approach is presented for the solution of spectral problems on infinite domains with regular ends, which avoids the need to solve boundary-value problems for many trial values of the spectral parameter. We present numerical results both for eigenvalues and for resonances, comparing with results reported by Aslanyan, Parnovski and Vassiliev.

We study the spectrum of a one-dimensional Dirac operator pencil, with a coupling constant in front of the potential considered as the spectral parameter. Motivated by recent investigations of graphene waveguides, we focus on the values of the coupling constant for which the kernel of the Dirac operator contains a square integrable function. In physics literature such a function is called a confined zero mode. Several results on the asymptotic distribution of coupling constants giving rise to zero modes are obtained. In particular, we show that this distribution depends in a subtle way on the sign variation and the presence of gaps in the potential. Surprisingly, it also depends on the arithmetic properties of certain quantities determined by the potential. We further observe that variable sign potentials may produce complex eigenvalues of the operator pencil. Some examples and numerical calculations illustrating these phenomena are presented.

For a particular family of long-range potentials V, we prove that the eigenvalues of the indefinite Sturm–Liouville operator A = sign(x)(−Δ+V(x)) accumulate to zero asymptotically along specific curves in the complex plane. Additionally, we relate the asymptotics of complex eigenvalues to the two-term asymptotics of the eigenvalues of associated self-adjoint operators.

A new spectral-based approach is presented to find orthogonal patterns from gridded weather/climate data. The method is based on optimizing the interpolation error variance. The optimally interpolated patterns (OIP) are then given by the eigenvectors of the interpolation error covariance matrix, obtained using the cross-spectral matrix. The formulation of the approach is presented, and the application to low-dimension stochastic toy models and to various reanalyses datasets is performed. In particular, it is found that the lowest-frequency patterns correspond to largest eigenvalues, that is, variances, of the interpolation error matrix. The approach has been applied to the Northern Hemispheric (NH) and tropical sea level pressure (SLP) and to the Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST). Two main OIP patterns are found for the NH SLP representing respectively the North Atlantic Oscillation and the North Pacific pattern. The leading tropical SLP OIP represents the Southern Oscillation. For the Indian Ocean SST, the leading OIP pattern shows a tripole-like structure having one sign over the eastern and north- and southwestern parts and an opposite sign in the remaining parts of the basin. The pattern is also found to have a high lagged correlation with the Niño-3 index with 6-months lag.

We consider the application of the conjugate gradient method to the solution of large, symmetric indefinite linear systems. Special emphasis is put on the use of constraint preconditioners and a new factorization that can reduce the number of flops required by the preconditioning step. Results concerning the eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix and its minimum polynomial are given. Numerical experiments validate these conclusions.

Ab initio calculations of the energy have been made at approximately 150 points on the two lowest singlet A' potential energy surfaces of the water molecule, 1A' and 1A', covering structures having D∞h, C∞v, C2v and Cs symmetries. The object was to obtain an ab initio surface of uniform accuracy over the whole three-dimensional coordinate space. Molecular orbitals were constructed from a double zeta plus Rydberg basis, and correlation was introduced by single and double excitations from multiconfiguration states which gave the correct dissociation behaviour. A two-valued analytical potential function has been constructed to fit these ab initio energy calculations. The adiabatic energies are given in our analytical function as the eigenvalues of a 2 2 matrix, whose diagonal elements define two diabatic surfaces. The off-diagonal element goes to zero for those configurations corresponding to surface intersections, so that our adiabatic surface exhibits the correct Σ/II conical intersections for linear configurations, and singlet/triplet intersections of the O + H2 dissociation fragments. The agreement between our analytical surface and experiment has been improved by using empirical diatomic potential curves in place of those derived from ab initio calculations.

In any data mining applications, automated text and text and image retrieval of information is needed. This becomes essential with the growth of the Internet and digital libraries. Our approach is based on the latent semantic indexing (LSI) and the corresponding term-by-document matrix suggested by Berry and his co-authors. Instead of using deterministic methods to find the required number of first "k" singular triplets, we propose a stochastic approach. First, we use Monte Carlo method to sample and to build much smaller size term-by-document matrix (e.g. we build k x k matrix) from where we then find the first "k" triplets using standard deterministic methods. Second, we investigate how we can reduce the problem to finding the "k"-largest eigenvalues using parallel Monte Carlo methods. We apply these methods to the initial matrix and also to the reduced one. The algorithms are running on a cluster of workstations under MPI and results of the experiments arising in textual retrieval of Web documents as well as comparison of the stochastic methods proposed are presented. External interferences can severely degrade the performance of an Over-the-horizon radar (OTHR), so suppression of external interferences in strong clutter environment is the prerequisite for the target detection. The traditional suppression solutions usually began with clutter suppression in either time or frequency domain, followed by the interference detection and suppression. Based on this traditional solution, this paper proposes a method characterized by joint clutter suppression and interference detection: by analyzing eigenvalues in a short-time moving window centered at different time position, Clutter is suppressed by discarding the maximum three eigenvalues at every time position and meanwhile detection is achieved by analyzing the remained eigenvalues at different position. Then, restoration is achieved by forward-backward linear prediction using interference-free data surrounding the interference position. In the numeric computation, the eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) is replaced by values decomposition (SVD) based on the equivalence of these two processing. Data processing and experimental results show its efficiency of noise floor falling down about 10-20 dB.

In this paper we consider bilinear forms of matrix polynomials and show that these polynomials can be used to construct solutions for the problems of solving systems of linear algebraic equations, matrix inversion and finding extremal eigenvalues. An almost Optimal Monte Carlo (MAO) algorithm for computing bilinear forms of matrix polynomials is presented. Results for the computational costs of a balanced algorithm for computing the bilinear form of a matrix power is presented, i.e., an algorithm for which probability and systematic errors are of the same order, and this is compared with the computational cost for a corresponding deterministic method.

We investigate the spectrum of certain integro-differential-delay equations (IDDEs) which arise naturally within spatially distributed, nonlocal, pattern formation problems. Our approach is based on the reformulation of the relevant dispersion relations with the use of the Lambert function. As a particular application of this approach, we consider the case of the Amari delay neural field equation which describes the local activity of a population of neurons taking into consideration the finite propagation speed of the electric signal. We show that if the kernel appearing in this equation is symmetric around some point a= 0 or consists of a sum of such terms, then the relevant dispersion relation yields spectra with an infinite number of branches, as opposed to finite sets of eigenvalues considered in previous works. Also, in earlier works the focus has been on the most rightward part of the spectrum and the possibility of an instability driven pattern formation. Here, we numerically survey the structure of the entire spectra and argue that a detailed knowledge of this structure is important within neurodynamical applications. Indeed, the Amari IDDE acts as a filter with the ability to recognise and respond whenever it is excited in such a way so as to resonate with one of its rightward modes, thereby amplifying such inputs and dampening others. Finally, we discuss how these results can be generalised to the case of systems of IDDEs.

We prove that all the eigenvalues of a certain highly non-self-adjoint Sturm–Liouville differential operator are real. The results presented are motivated by and extend those recently found by various authors (Benilov et al. (2003) [3], Davies (2007) [7] and Weir (2008) [18]) on the stability of a model describing small oscillations of a thin layer of fluid inside a rotating cylinder.

In a previous paper (J. of Differential Equations, Vol. 249 (2010), 3081-3098) we examined a family of periodic Sturm-Liouville problems with boundary and interior singularities which are highly non-self-adjoint but have only real eigenvalues. We now establish Schatten class properties of the associated resolvent operator.
