MSc Thesis - Discoverability Strategies for Open Educational Resources: A Scoping Study

With an early focus on achieving a critical mass of released open educational content, challenges of how resources can be found by beneficiaries has been highlighted as a major issue. As we move forward further research and investigation is required to understand the most effective approaches of reaching out to and engaging a globally dispersed population of education users. In 2014 I conducted a small scale scoping study into the discoverability strategies identified as being used by higher education institutions releasing OERs in the UK. This was mapped against a body of literature on our understanding of user behaviour for online resource discovery and the technologies available to support this to identify trends and gaps as opportunities for improvements. Please note this report was not originally written for publication. I hope however it is of value to the open education community and will act as a starting point for further research in this area.

User Experience (a hidden barrier) in OER

More Open Education Resources (OER) and learning environments are being created and starting to mature and there are a number of barriers to learning and creator participation. One often overlooked barrier that has been given less attention, especially within OERs, is user experience (UX). UX is the way a person feels about using a product, system or service. We are creatures with emotional needs and, in the rush to get great content open and available sometimes the usability, the wow factor and good design principles get left by the wayside. I will demonstrate ways to think about UX for your OER and learning environments and why this is an important factor in helping engage learners with our educational materials. ‘The real payoff comes when we can make that remarkability last. EdShare, OERs and impact

This presentation was prepared as a contribution to the “Does it make a difference? The impact of repositories and OERs on teaching and learning”, JISC funded event, in collaboration with SCORE and LORO, held on 23 March 2011, at the Open University, Milton Keynes. The work reflects the thinking and approach for EdShare at the University of Southampton in March 2011.

Scitable - Learn Science with Nature Education

Scitable is an open online teaching/learning portal combining high quality educational articles authored by editors at NPG with technology-based community features to fuel a global exchange of scientific insights, teaching practices, and study resources. Scitable currently contains articles in the field of genetics, and is intended for college undergraduate faculty and students. Future plans involve extension of Scitable to other fields within the life sciences, as well as to other audiences. Scitable brings together a library of scientific overviews with a worldwide community of scientists, researchers, teachers and students.
