Technological convergence: a strategic perspective

The information and communication technologies (ICT) sectors are in a process of technological convergence. Determinant factors in this process are the liberalisation of the telecommunications markets and technological change. Many firms are engaged in a process of mergers and alliances to position themselves in this new framework. Technological and demand uncertainties are very important. Our objective in this paper is to study the economic determinants of the strategies of the firms. With this aim, we review some key technological and demand aspects. We shed some light on the strategic motivations of the firms by establishing a parallel with the evolution of the retailing sector

Progress in front propagation research

We review the progress in the field of front propagation in recent years. We survey many physical, biophysical and cross-disciplinary applications, including reduced-variable models of combustion flames, Reid's paradox of rapid forest range expansions, the European colonization of North America during the 19th century, the Neolithic transition in Europe from 13 000 to 5000 years ago, the description of subsistence boundaries, the formation of cultural boundaries, the spread of genetic mutations, theory and experiments on virus infections, models of cancer tumors, etc. Recent theoretical advances are unified in a single framework, encompassing very diverse systems such as those with biased random walks, distributed delays, sequential reaction and dispersion, cohabitation models, age structure and systems with several interacting species. Embodied Autonomy in Digital Ecosystems: From Bio-Inspired Agents to Cognitive Systems

This paper proposes to promote autonomy in digital ecosystems so that it provides agents with information to improve the behavior of the digital ecosystem in terms of stability. This work proposes that, in digital ecosystems, autonomous agents can provide fundamental services and information. The final goal is to run the ecosystem, generate novel conditions and let agents exploit them. A set of evaluation measures must be defined as well. We want to provide an outline of some global indicators, such as heterogeneity and diversity, and establish relationships between agent behavior and these global indicators to fully understand interactions between agents, and to understand the dependence and autonomy relations that emerge between the interacting agents. Individual variations, interaction dependencies, and environmental factors are determinants of autonomy that would be considered. The paper concludes with a discussion of situations when autonomy is a milestone

El Pràcticum com un 'work in progress' compartit www.eduportfolio.org

Des de fa dos cursos, professors de les universitats de Tarragona, Lleida i Girona desenvolupem un projecte d’innovació centrat en el pràcticum dels Estudis de Mestre el qual, a més de les tutories i seminaris, utilitza el portafoli electrònic com a eina d’intercanvi, acompanyament i presentació de les produccions dels i les estudiants. Des del curs 2009-10, i amb un ajut MQD de l’AGAUR, s’experimenta amb aquesta eina Web 2.0 –www.eduportfolio.org– dissenyada per la Université de Montréal, una plataforma que s’està utilitzant actualment als cinc continents. L’Eduportfolio agilitza la relació practicants-tutors i l’assessorament en l’elaboració progressiva de la memòria del Pràcticum i del projecte que els estudiants han de dur a terme a l’escola, i també obre noves possibilitats en aquest període dedicat a la pràctica docent reflexiva
