Laserinduced damage and ablation thresholds of bulk superconducting samples of Bi2(SrCa)xCu3Oy(x=2, 2.2, 2.6, 2.8, 3) and Bi1.6 (Pb)xSr2Ca2Cu3 Oy (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) for irradiation with a 1.06 m beam from a NdYAG laser have been determined as a function of x by the pulsed photothermal deflection technique. The threshold values of power density for ablation as well as damage are found to increase with increasing values of x in both systems while in the Pbdoped system the threshold values decrease above a specific value of x, coinciding with the point at which the Tc also begins to fall.

Highly transparent, luminescent and biocompatible ZnO quantum dots were prepared in water, methanol, and ethanol using liquid-phase pulsed laser ablation technique without using any surfactant. Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed the formation of good crystalline ZnO quantum dots with a uniform size distribution of 7 nm. The emission wavelength could be varied by varying the native defect chemistry of ZnO quantum dots and the laser fluence. Highly luminescent nontoxic ZnO quantum dots have exciting application potential as florescent probes in biomedical applications.

The growth kinetics of an aerial bacterial colony on solid agar media was studied using laser induced fluorescence technique. Fluorescence quenching of Rhodamin B by the bacterial colony was utilized for the study. The lag phase, log phase, and stationary phase of growth curve of bacterial colony was identified by measuring peak fluorescence intensity of dye doped bacterial colony.

Time and space resolved studies of emission from CN molecules have been carried out in the plasma produced from graphite target by 1.06 urn pulses from a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Depending on the laser pulse energy, time of observation and position of the sampled volume of the plasma, the features of the emission spectrum are found to change drastically. The vibrational temperature and population distribution in the different vibrational levels have been studied as functions of distance, time, laser energy and ambient gas pressure. Evidence for nonlinear effects of the plasma medium such as self focusing which exhibits threshold-like behaviour are also obtained. Temperature and electron density of the plasma have been evaluated using the relative line intensities of successive ionization stages of carbon atom. These electron density measurements are verified by using Stark broadening method.

A study has been carried out to understand the influence of ambient gases on the dynamics of laser-blow-off plumes of multi-layered LiFC thin film. Plume images at various time intervals ranging from 100 to 3000 ns have been recorded using an intensified CCD camera. Enhancement in the plume intensity and change in size and shape occurs on introducing ambient gases and these changes are highly dependent on the nature and composition of the ambient gas used. Velocity of the plume was found to be higher in helium ambient whereas intensity enhancement is greater in argon environment. The plume shapes have maximum size at 102 and 101 Torr of Ar and He pressures, respectively. As the background pressure increases further (>102 Torr: depending on the nature of gas), the plume gets compressed/focused in the lateral direction. Internal structure formation and turbulences are observed at higher pressures (>101 Torr) in both ambient gases.

A simple method based on laser beam deflection to study the variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration in a solution is presented. When a properly fanned out laser beam is passed through a rectangular cell filled with solution having concentration gradient, the emergent beam traces out a curved pattern on a screen. By taking measurements on the pattern at different concentrations, the variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration can be determined.

Transition metal acetylides, MC2 (M=Fe, Co and Ni), exhibit ferromagnetic behavior of which TC is characteristic of their size and structure. CoC2 synthesized in anhydrous condition exhibited cubic structure with disordered C2 2 orientation. Once being exposed to water (or air), the particles behave ferromagnetically due to the lengthening of the CoCo distance by the coordination of water molecules to Co2+ cations. Heating of these particles induces segregation of metallic cores with carbon mantles. Electron beam or 193 nm laser beam can produce nanoparticles with metallic cores covered with carbon mantles

A pulsed Nd-YAG laser beam is used to produce a transient refractive index gradient in air adjoining the plane surface of the sample material. This refractive index gradient is probed by a continuous He-Ne laser beam propagating parallel to the sample surface. The observed deflection signals produced by the probe beam exhibit drastic variations when the pump laser energy density crosses the damage threshold for the sample. The measurements are used to estimate the damage threshold for a few polymer samples. The present values are found to be in good agreement with those determined by other methods.

The phenomenon of mirage effect suffered by a He-Ne laser beam has been utilized to detect phase transitions in solids. It has been observed that anomalous fluctuations of large amplitude occur in the signal level near the transition temperature. The mean square value of the fluctuation is found to exhibit a well-defined peak at this point. Results of measurements made in the case of crystals of TGS ((NH2CH2COOH)3.H2SO4) and a ceramic sample (BaTiO3) are given to illustrate this technique.
Effectiveness Of Feature Detection Operators On The Performance Of Iris Biometric Recognition System
Resumo:
Iris Recognition is a highly efficient biometric identification system with great possibilities for future in the security systems area. Its robustness and unobtrusiveness, as opposed tomost of the currently deployed systems, make it a good candidate to replace most of thesecurity systems around. By making use of the distinctiveness of iris patterns, iris recognition systems obtain a unique mapping for each person. Identification of this person is possible by applying appropriate matching algorithm. In this paper, Daugmans Rubber Sheet model is employed for irisnormalization and unwrapping, descriptive statistical analysis of different feature detection operators is performed, features extracted is encoded using Haar wavelets and for classification hammingdistance as a matching algorithm is used. The system was tested on the UBIRIS database. The edge detection algorithm, Canny, is found to be the best one to extract most of the iris texture. The success rate of feature detection using canny is 81%, False Accept Rate is 9% and False Reject Rate is 10%.

The basic concepts of digital signal processing are taught to the students in engineering and science. The focus of the course is on linear, time invariant systems. The question as to what happens when the system is governed by a quadratic or cubic equation remains unanswered in the vast majority of literature on signal processing. Light has been shed on this problem when John V Mathews and Giovanni L Sicuranza published the book Polynomial Signal Processing. This book opened up an unseen vista of polynomial systems for signal and image processing. The book presented the theory and implementations of both adaptive and non-adaptive FIR and IIR quadratic systems which offer improved performance than conventional linear systems. The theory of quadratic systems presents a pristine and virgin area of research that offers computationally intensive work. Once the area of research is selected, the next issue is the choice of the software tool to carry out the work. Conventional languages like C and C++ are easily eliminated as they are not interpreted and lack good quality plotting libraries. MATLAB is proved to be very slow and so do SCILAB and Octave. The search for a language for scientific computing that was as fast as C, but with a good quality plotting library, ended up in Python, a distant relative of LISP. It proved to be ideal for scientific computing. An account of the use of Python, its scientific computing package scipy and the plotting library pylab is given in the appendix Initially, work is focused on designing predictors that exploit the polynomial nonlinearities inherent in speech generation mechanisms. Soon, the work got diverted into medical image processing which offered more potential to exploit by the use of quadratic methods. The major focus in this area is on quadratic edge detection methods for retinal images and fingerprints as well as de-noising raw MRI signals
