The main objective of the present study is to understand different mechanisms involved in the production and evolution of plasma by the pulsed laser ablation and radio frequency magnetron sputtering. These two methods are of particular interest, as these are well accomplished methods used for surface coatings, nanostructure fabrications and other thin film devices fabrications. Material science researchers all over the world are involved in the development of devices based on transparent conducting oxide (TCO) thin films. Our laboratory has been involved in the development of TCO devices like thin film diodes using zinc oxide (ZnO) and zinc magnesium oxide (ZnMgO), thin film transistors (TFT's) using zinc indium oxide and zinc indium tin oxide, and some electroluminescent (EL) devices by pulsed laser ablation and RF magnetron sputtering. In contrast to the extensive literature relating to pure ZnO and other thin films produced by various deposition techniques, there appears to have been relatively little effort directed towards the characterization of plasmas from which such films are produced. The knowledge of plasma dynamics corresponding to the variations in the input parameters of ablation and sputtering, with the kind of laser/magnetron used for the generation of plasma, is limited. To improve the quality of the deposited films for desired application, a sound understanding of the plume dynamics, physical and chemical properties of the species in the plume is required. Generally, there is a correlation between the plume dynamics and the structural properties of the films deposited. Thus the study of the characteristics of the plume contributes to a better understanding and control of the deposition process itself. The hydrodynamic expansion of the plume, the composition, and SIze distribution of clusters depend not only on initial conditions of plasma production but also on the ambient gas composition and pressure. The growth and deposition of the films are detennined by the thermodynamic parameters of the target material and initial conditions such as electron temperature and density of the plasma. For optimizing the deposition parameters of various films (stoichiometric or otherwise), in-situ or ex-situ monitoring of plasma plume dynamics become necessary for the purpose of repeatability and reliability. With this in mind, the plume dynamics and compositions of laser ablated and RF magnetron sputtered zinc oxide plasmas have been investigated. The plasmas studied were produced at conditions employed typically for the deposition of ZnO films by both methods. Apart from this two component ZnO plasma, a multi-component material (lead zirconium titanate) was ablated and plasma was characterized.

In the present work we report the preparation details studies on ZnO thin films. ZnO thin films are prepared using cost effective deposition technique viz., Chemical Spray Pyrolysis (CSP). The method is very effective for large area preparation of the ZnO thin film. A new post-deposition process could also be developed to avoid the adsorption of oxygen that usually occurs after the spraying process i.e., while cooling. Studies were done by changing the various deposition parameters for optimizing the properties of ZnO thin film. Moreover, different methods of doping using various elements are also tried to enhance the conductivity and transparency of the film to make these suitable for various optoelectronic applications.

The study is undertaken on PVC blends because of their all-round importance-One of the most prominent needs of PVC in application end-use is permanent plasticizationlo. Butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) has been utilized as permanent plasticizer for PVC since the 1940s for wire and cable insulation, food contact, and pondliners used for oil containment23'24. Also plasticized PVC has been added to vulcanizable nitrile rubber, to yield improved ozone, thermal ageing, and chemical resistance resulting in applications including fuel hose covers, gaskets, conveyor belt covers, and printing roll covers. This blend is miscible in the range of 23 to 45 per cent acrylonitrile content in the butadiene-acrylqnitrile copolymerzs. The first phase of the study was directed towards modification blends. These blends, in addition to the polymers, require a host of additives like curatives for the NBR phase and stabilizers for the PVC phase26of the existing PVC blends, especially NBR/PVC. The second phase of the study was directed towards the development of novel PVC based blends. Chloroprene rubber (polychloroprene) (CR) is structurally similar to PVC and hence is likely to form successful blends with PVC32.

Fluorescence is a powerful tool in biological research, the relevance of which relies greatly on the availability of sensitive and selective fluorescent probes. Nanometer sized fluorescent semiconductor materials have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to the high luminescence intensity, low photobleaching, large Stokes’ shift and high photochemical stability. The optical and spectroscopic features of nanoparticles make them very convincing alternatives to traditional fluorophores in a range of applications. Efficient surface capping agents make these nanocrystals bio-compatible. They can provide a novel platform on which many biomolecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins can be covalently linked. In the second phase of the present work, bio-compatible, fluorescent, manganese doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn) nanocrystals suitable for bioimaging applications have been developed and their cytocompatibility has been assessed. Functionalization of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals by safe materials results in considerable reduction of toxicity and allows conjugation with specific biomolecules. The highly fluorescent, bio-compatible and water- dispersible ZnS:Mn nanocrystals are found to be ideal fluorescent probes for biological labeling

This work projects photoluminescence (PL) as an alternative technique to estimate the order of resistivity of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films. ZnO thin films, deposited using chemical spray pyrolysis (CSP) by varying the deposition parameters like solvent, spray rate, pH of precursor, and so forth, have been used for this study. Variation in the deposition conditions has tremendous impact on the luminescence properties as well as resistivity. Two emissions could be recorded for all samples—the near band edge emission (NBE) at 380 nm and the deep level emission (DLE) at ∼500 nm which are competing in nature. It is observed that the ratio of intensities of DLE to NBE ( DLE/ NBE) can be reduced by controlling oxygen incorporation in the sample. - measurements indicate that restricting oxygen incorporation reduces resistivity considerably. Variation of DLE/ NBE and resistivity for samples prepared under different deposition conditions is similar in nature. DLE/ NBE was always less than resistivity by an order for all samples. Thus from PL measurements alone, the order of resistivity of the samples can be estimated.

Green energy and Green technology are the most of the quoted terms in the context of modern science and technology. Technology which is close to nature is the necessity of the modern world which is haunted by global warming and climatic alterations. Proper utilization of solar energy is one of the goals of Green Energy Movement. The present thesis deals with the work carried out in the eld of nanotechnology and its possible use in various applications (employing natural dyes) like solar cells. Unlike arti cial dyes, the natural dyes are available, easy to prepare, low in cost, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and fully biodegradable. Looking to the 21st century, the nano/micro sciences will be a chief contributor to scienti c and technological developments. As nanotechnology progresses and complex nanosystems are fabricated, a growing impetus is being given to the development of multi-functional and size-dependent materials. The control of the morphology, from the nano to the micrometer scales, associated with the incorporation of several functionalities can yield entirely new smart hybrid materials. They are special class of materials which provide a new method for the improvement of the environmental stability of the material with interesting optical properties and opening a land of opportunities for applications in the eld of photonics. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one such multipurpose material that has been explored for applications in sensing, environmental monitoring, and bio-medical systems and communications technology. Understanding the growth mechanism and tailoring their morphology is essential for the use of ZnO crystals as nano/micro electromechanical systems and also as building blocks of other nanosystems.

Organic-inorganic nanocomposites combine unique properties of both the constituents in one material. Among this group of materials, clay based as well as ZnO, TiO2 nanocomposites have been found to have diverse applications. Optoelectronic devices require polymerinorganic systems to meet certain desired properties. Dielectric properties of conventional polymers like poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and polystyrene (PS) may also be tailor tuned with the incorporation of inorganic fillers in very small amounts. Electrical conductivity and surface resistivity of polymer matrices are found to improve with inorganic nanofillers. II-VI semiconductors and their nano materials have attracted material scientists because of their unique optical properties of photoluminescence, UV photodetection and light induced conductivity. Cadmium selenide (CdSe), zinc selenide (ZnSe) and zinc oxide (ZnO) are some of the most promising members of the IIVI semiconductor family, used in light-emitting diodes, nanosensors, non-linear optical (NLO) absorption etc. EVA and PS materials were selected as the matrices in the present study because they are commercially used polymers and have not been the subject of research for opto-electronic properties with semiconductor nanomaterials

Structural, electronic, and optical properties of amorphous and transparent zinc tin oxide films deposited on glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) were examined for two chemical compositions of Zn:Sn=1:1 and 2:1 as a function of oxygen partial pressure PO2 used for the film deposition and annealing temperature. Different from a previous report on sputter-deposited films Chiang et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86, 013503 2005 , the PLD-deposited films crystallized at a lower temperature 450 °C to give crystalline ZnO and SnO2 phases. The optical band gaps Tauc gaps were 2.80−2.85 eV and almost independent of oxygen PO2 , which are smaller than those of the corresponding crystals 3.35−3.89 eV . Films deposited at low PO2 showed significant subgap absorptions, which were reduced by postthermal annealing. Hall mobility showed steep increases when carrier concentration exceeded threshold values and the threshold value depended on the film chemical composition. The films deposited at low PO2 2 Pa had low carrier concentrations. It is thought that the low PO2 produced high-density oxygen deficiencies and generated electrons, but these electrons were trapped in localized states, which would be observed as the subgap absorptions. Similar effects were observed for 600 °C crystallized films and their resistivities were increased by formation of subgap states due to the reducing high-temperature condition. High carrier concentrations and large mobilities were obtained in an intermediate PO2 region for the as-deposited films.

Highly conductive and transparent thin films of amorphous zinc indium tin oxide are prepared at room temperature by co-sputtering of zinc 10 oxide and indium tin oxide. Cationic contents in the films are varied by adjusting the power to the sputtering targets. Optical transmission study of 11 films showed an average transmission greater than 85% across the visible region. Maximum conductivity of 6×102 S cm−1 is obtained for Zn/In/ 12 Sn atomic ratio 0.4/0.4/0.2 in the film. Hall mobility strongly depends on carrier concentration and maximum mobility obtained is 18 cm2 V−1 s−1 13 at a carrier concentration of 2.1×1020 cm−3. Optical band gap of films varied from 3.44 eV to 3 eV with the increase of zinc content in the film 14 while the refractive index of the films at 600 nm is about 2.0.

This work mainly concentrate to understand the optical and electrical properties of amorphous zinc tin oxide and amorphous zinc indium tin oxide thin films for TFT applications. Amorphous materials are promising in achieving better device performance on temperature sensitive substrates compared to polycrystalline materials. Most of these amorphous oxides are multicomponent and as such there exists the need for an optimized chemical composition. For this we have to make individual targets with required chemical composition to use it in conventional thin film deposition techniques like PLD and sputtering. Instead, if we use separate targets for each of the cationic element and if separately control the power during the simultaneous sputtering process, then we can change the chemical composition by simply adjusting the sputtering power. This is what is done in co-sputtering technique. Eventhough there had some reports about thin film deposition using this technique, there was no reports about the use of this technique in TFT fabrication until very recent time. Hence in this work, co-sputtering has performed as a major technique for thin film deposition and TFT fabrication. PLD were also performed as it is a relatively new technique and allows the use high oxygen pressure during deposition. This helps to control the carrier density in the channel and also favours the smooth film surface. Both these properties are crucial in TFT.Zinc tin oxide material is interesting in the sense that it does not contain costly indium. Eventhough some works were already reported in ZTO based TFTs, there was no systematic study about ZTO thin film's various optoelectronic properties from a TFT manufacturing perspective. Attempts have made to analyse the ZTO films prepared by PLD and co-sputtering. As more type of cations present in the film, chances are high to form an amorphous phase. Zinc indium tin oxide is studied as a multicomponent oxide material suitable for TFT fabrication.

This thesis Entitled INVESTIGATIONS ON THE STRUCTURAL, OPTICAL AND MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF NANOSTRUCTURED CERIUM OXIDE IN PURE AND DOPED FORMS AND ITS POLYMER NANOCOMPOSITES.Synthesis and processing of nanomatelials and nanostmctures are the essential aspects of nanotechnology. Studies on new physical properties and applications of nanomaterials and nanostructures are possible only when nanostructured materials are made available with desired size, morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition.Recently, several methods have been developed to prepare pure and doped CeO2 powder, including wet chemical synthesis, thermal hydrolysis, flux method, hydrothermal synthesis, gas condensation method, microwave technique etc. In all these, some special reaction conditions, such as high temperature, high pressure, capping agents, expensive or toxic solvents etc. have been involved.Another hi gh-li ght of the present work is room temperature ferromagnetism in cerium oxdie thin films deposited by spray pyrolysis technique. The observation of self trapped exciton mediated PL in ceria nanocrystals is another important outcome of the present study. STE mediated mechanism has been proposed for CeO2 nanocrystals based on the dependence of PL intensity on the annealing temperature. It would be interesting to extent these investigations to the doped forms of cerium oxide and cerium oxide thin films to get deeper Insight into STE mechanism.Due to time constraints detailed investigations could not be canied out on the preparation and properties of free standing films of polymer/ceria nanocomposites. It has been observed that good quality free standing films of PVDF/ceria, PS/C61‘l8, PMMA/ceria can be obtained using solution casting technique. These polymer nanocomposite films show high dielectric constant around 20 and offer prospects of applications as gate electrodes in metal-oxide semiconductor devices.

Tellurite glasses are photonic materials of special interest to the branch of optoelectronic and communication, due to its important optical properties such as high refractive index, broad IR transmittance, low phonon energy etc. Tellurite glasses are solutions to the search of potential candidates for nonlinear optical devices. Low phonon energy makes it an efficient host for dopant ions like rare earths, allowing a better environment for radiative transitions. The dopant ions maintain majority of their individual properties in the glass matrix. Tellurites are less toxic than chalcogenides, more chemically and thermally stable which makes them a highly suitable fiber material for nonlinear applications in the midinfrared and they are of increased research interest in applications like laser, amplifier, sensor etc. Low melting point and glass transition temperature helps tellurite glass preparation easier than other glass families. In order to probe into the versatility of tellurite glasses in optoelectronic industry; we have synthesized and undertaken various optical studies on tellurite glasses. We have proved that the highly nonlinear tellurite glasses are suitable candidates in optical limiting, with comparatively lower optical limiting threshold. Tuning the optical properties of glasses is an important factor in the optoelectronic research. We have found that thermal poling is an efficient mechanism in tuning the optical properties of these materials. Another important nonlinear phenomenon found in zinc tellurite glasses is their ability to switch from reverse saturable absorption to saturable absorption in the presence of lanthanide ions. In recent years, nanoscience and nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most important and exciting frontier areas of research interest in almost all fields of science and technology. This technology provides the path of many breakthrough changes in the near future in many areas of advanced technological applications. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary area of research and development. The advent of nanotechnology in the modern times and the beginning of its systematic study can be thought of to have begun with a lecture by the famous physicist Richard Feynman. In 1960 he presented a visionary and prophetic lecture at the meeting of the American Physical Society entitled “there is plenty of room at the bottom” where he speculated on the possibility and potential of nanosized materials. Synthesis of nanomaterials and nanostructures are the essential aspects of nanotechnology. Studies on new physical properties and applications of nanomaterials are possible only when materials are made available with desired size, morphology, crystal structure and chemical composition. Cerium oxide (ceria) is one of the important functional materials with high mechanical strength, thermal stability, excellent optical properties, appreciable oxygen ion conductivity and oxygen storage capacity. Ceria finds a variety of applications in mechanical polishing of microelectronic devices, as catalysts for three-way automatic exhaust systems and as additives in ceramics and phosphors. The doped ceria usually has enhanced catalytic and electrical properties, which depend on a series of factors such as the particle size, the structural characteristics, morphology etc. Ceria based solid solutions have been widely identified as promising electrolytes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). The success of many promising device technologies depends on the suitable powder synthesis techniques. The challenge for introducing new nanopowder synthesis techniques is to preserve high material quality while attaining the desired composition. The method adopted should give reproducible powder properties, high yield and must be time and energy effective. The use of a variety of new materials in many technological applications has been realized through the use of thin films of these materials. Thus the development of any new material will have good application potential if it can be deposited in thin film form with the same properties. The advantageous properties of thin films include the possibility of tailoring the properties according to film thickness, small mass of the materials involved and high surface to volume ratio. The synthesis of polymer nanocomposites is an integral aspect of polymer nanotechnology. By inserting the nanometric inorganic compounds, the properties of polymers can be improved and this has a lot of applications depending upon the inorganic filler material present in the polymer.
