Ce mémoire porte sur la présentation des estimateurs de Bernstein qui sont des alternatives récentes aux différents estimateurs classiques de fonctions de répartition et de densité. Plus précisément, nous étudions leurs différentes propriétés et les comparons à celles de la fonction de répartition empirique et à celles de l'estimateur par la méthode du noyau. Nous déterminons une expression asymptotique des deux premiers moments de l'estimateur de Bernstein pour la fonction de répartition. Comme pour les estimateurs classiques, nous montrons que cet estimateur vérifie la propriété de Chung-Smirnov sous certaines conditions. Nous montrons ensuite que l'estimateur de Bernstein est meilleur que la fonction de répartition empirique en terme d'erreur quadratique moyenne. En s'intéressant au comportement asymptotique des estimateurs de Bernstein, pour un choix convenable du degré du polynôme, nous montrons que ces estimateurs sont asymptotiquement normaux. Des études numériques sur quelques distributions classiques nous permettent de confirmer que les estimateurs de Bernstein peuvent être préférables aux estimateurs classiques.

We consider two new approaches to nonparametric estimation of the leverage effect. The first approach uses stock prices alone. The second approach uses the data on stock prices as well as a certain volatility instrument, such as the CBOE volatility index (VIX) or the Black-Scholes implied volatility. The theoretical justification for the instrument-based estimator relies on a certain invariance property, which can be exploited when high frequency data is available. The price-only estimator is more robust since it is valid under weaker assumptions. However, in the presence of a valid volatility instrument, the price-only estimator is inefficient as the instrument-based estimator has a faster rate of convergence. We consider two empirical applications, in which we study the relationship between the leverage effect and the debt-to-equity ratio, credit risk, and illiquidity.

This paper proposes a model of natural-resource exploitation when private ownership requires costly enforcement activities. For a given wage rate, it is shown how enforcement costs can increase with labor's average productivity on a resource site. As a result, it is never optimal for the site owner to produce at the point where marginal productivity equals the wage rate. It may even be optimal to exploit at a point exhibiting negative marginal returns. An important parameter in the analysis is the prevailing wage rate. When wages are low, further decreases in the wage rates can reduce the returns from resource exploitation. At sufficiently low wages, positive returns can be rendered impossible to achieve and the site is abandoned to a free-access exploitation. The analysis provides some clues as to why property rights may be more difficult to delineate in less developed countries. It proposes a different framework from which to address normative issues such as the desirability of free trade with endogenous enforcement costs, the optimality of private decisions to enforce property rights, the effect of income distribution on property rights enforceability, etc.

We derive conditions that must be satisfied by the primitives of the problem in order for an equilibrium in linear Markov strategies to exist in some common property natural resource differential games. These conditions impose restrictions on the admissible form of the natural growth function, given a benefit function, or on the admissible form of the benefit function, given a natural growth function.
