Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia keraamisten kääntöterien soveltuvuus niukkaseosteräksille ja M-käsittelyn vaikutus teränkestoaikoihin. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli tutkia keraamiseosten erityisominaisuudet ja muodostaa käsitys keraamisilla kääntöterillä sorvaamisen erityisvaatimuksista. Kirjallisuusosassa selvitettiin tutkimushetkellä saatavissa olleet keraamiset teräaineseokset ja niiden ominaisuudet sekä selvitettiin keraamisten kääntöterien viimeaikaiset kehitystrendit. Lastuamistutkimus toteutettiin standardin ISO 3685:1993 mukaisesti, minkä lisäksi mitattiin lastuamisvoimat ja tehtiin kokeessa käytetyille terille lastunmurtokoe. Koemateriaalit olivat Imatra Steelin GreenCut, Hydax 25, M-käsittelemätön 42CrMo4 ja M-käsitelty MoC410M. Kokeissa käytetyt kääntöterät olivat eri valmistajien alumiinioksiditeriä, titaanikarbidiseostettuja alumiinioksiditeriä, kuituvahvisteisia ja yksi puhdas titaanikarbidiseosteinen terä. Koetulosten perusteella hyvän teränkestoajan saavuttamiseksi on tärkeää valita oikea keraamiseos ja sille soveltuvat parametrit. Oikein valituilla parametreilla M-terästä sorvattaessa tulokset ylittävät kovametalleilla saavutettavissa olevat arvot. Tulosten perusteella niukkaseostettujen terästen sorvaus onnistuu hyvin keraamisilla kääntöterillä, mutta kovametallisorvaukseen verrattuna syöttöä on laskettava ja lastuamisnopeutta lisättävä. Tämän työn tuloksia voidaan soveltaa sopivissa olosuhteissa toteutettavassa kappaletavaratuotannossa. Sovelluksen onnistuminen vaatii tukevat työstöolosuhteet ja riittävien lastuamisnopeuksien saavuttamisen.

Teräksen hyvällä lastuttavuudella tarkoitetaan useita eri tekijöitä, joita ovat esimerkiksi terän pitkä kestoikä, prosessin kannalta edullinen lastun muoto sekä lastuttavan kappaleen hyvä mittatarkkuus ja pinnan laatu. Materiaalin lastuttavuuden mittaamisella teräksen valmistaja pyrkii varmistumaan siitä, että asiakkaan teräkselle asettamat lastuttavuusvaatimukset täyttyisivät mahdollisimman hyvin. Tämä diplomityö on tehty Ovako Bar Oy Ab:lle Imatran terästehtaalle. Diplomityön tavoitteena oli kartoittaa olemassa olevat lastuttavuuskokeet ja laatia suunnitelma M-teräksen laadun testaamiseen soveltuvasta uudesta lastuttavuuskokeesta Ovakon yli 20 vuotta vanhan lastuttavuuskokeen eli Mq-kokeen tilalle. Mq-kokeen toimivuus on erittäin riippuvainen käytettävästä teräpalasta. Kyseisten teräpalojen valmistus on lopetettu eikä vastaavaa teräpalaa ole saatavilla. Tämän vuoksi oli tarve selvittää mahdollisuuksia korvata Mq-koe. Uuden lastuttavuuskokeen suunnittelua ohjaavat lastuttavuuskokeelle asetettavat vaatimukset, joita ovat luotettavuus, nopeus, helppokäyttöisyys ja pieni koemateriaalimäärän tarve. Tämän työn kirjallisuusosuudessa esitetyistä poraamalla, sorvaamalla ja jyrsimällä tehtävistä lastuttavuuskokeista ei löydy suoraa ratkaisua M-teräksen testaamiseen. Työn soveltavassa osuudessa esitetään kolme koevariaatiota uudeksi lastuttavuuskokeeksi. Ensimmäinen on Mq-koe täydennettynä sitä tukevilla lastuttavuuskokeilla ja siihen liittyvien ongelmien poistaminen. Toinen koevariaatio on pistosorvauskoe, ja kolmantena koekappaleen ja teräpalan väliseen resistanssiin perustuva koe. Kokeiden toimivuudesta M-teräksen testaukseen ei tarkalleen tiedetä, joten työssä on laadittu koejärjestely kokeiden toimivuuden testaamiseksi. Työn keskeisimpiä havaintoja on, että M-teräksen ja normaalin teräksen välinen ero terän kestoiässä mitattuna on kaventunut nykyaikaisten pinnoitettujen teräpalojen vuoksi. Tämä asettaa suuren haasteen uuden kokeen laadinnalle. Lyhyessä kokeellisessa osuudessa testattu pistosorvauskoe kuitenkin antoi myönteisiä tuloksia sen kehityspotentiaalista toimia M-teräksen lastuttavuuskokeena. Diplomityö antaa Ovakolle näkemyksiä erilaisista lastuttavuuskoe vaihtoehdoista ja niiden mahdollisista hyödyistä, haitoista ja mahdollisuuksista. Työssä esitettyjen vaihtoehtojen pohjalta pystytään laatimaan uusi lastuttavuuspikakoe.

Paremmin lastuttavia M-käsiteltyjä teräksiä on käytetty yrityksissä jo yli 20 vuoden ajan. Ominaisuuksiensa ansiosta M-teräksillä on pystytty pienentämään koneistuskustannuksia ja parantamaan kilpailukykyä. Viime vuosien aikana lastuavat terät ja työstökoneet ovat kuitenkin kehittyneet ja ero M-terästen ja tavanomaisten terästen välillä on voinut kaventua. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tutkia, saavutetaanko M-teräksen käytöllä taloudellisia etuja nykyaikaisissa konepajaolosuhteissa. Tutkimuksessa vertailtiin M-käsitellyn ja tavanomaisen 42CrMo4 – teräksen koneistusta. Valmistuskokeissa tarkasteltiin terien kulumista, lastun muotoa ja pinnanlaatua. Koekappaleena toimi olakkeellinen kuusiomutteri M64 kierteellä. Tuotteita valmistettiin yli 500 kappaletta ja materiaalia poistettiin noin 2000 kg. Koetulosten perusteella tuotteille laskettiin koneistuskustannukset kuvitteellisessa yrityksessä. Ero materiaalien välillä oli suurin työvaiheissa, joissa lastuaminen oli jatkuvaa. Sisä- ja ulkosorvauksessa M-käsiteltyä terästä lastunneiden terien kestoikä oli noin kaksinkertainen ja kierteen sorvauksessa noin nelinkertainen tavalliseen teräkseen verrattuna. Hakkaavassa työstössä terien kestoikä oli molemmilla materiaaleilla sama. Työssä suoritettujen kokeiden ja kustannuslaskelmien perusteella, käyttämällä M-käsiteltyä terästä voidaan pienentää valmistuskustannuksia. Materiaalien välinen ero korostuu, kun hakkaavaa työstöä on vähän, sarjat ovat suuria ja tuotanto on miehittämätöntä.

The main aim of this thesis is to study the effect of mineral fillers on the properties of extruded wood-polypropylene composites (WPC). The studied minerals are Talc, Calcite (CaCO3), two quantities of Wollastonite and Soapstone, and the level of mineral addition is 20 w-%. The study shows that mineral fillers can be used to modify and improve the properties of woodplastic composites. Especially the moisture-related properties of WPCs were found to be improved significantly by mineral addition. As the WPCs of the studied type are commonly used in outdoor applications, this is of importance in terms of usability. In machining, the addition of two minerals retained the surface roughness at same level throughout the test, indicating a favorable effect on machinability. The use of hard minerals shortened the tool life in machining. In general, a modest increase in density was observed. In many of the studied properties, no apparent influence of mineral addition was found, indicating that the properties were not weakened. An overall result was that talc showed the best overall performance, indicating that it can be used as an active filler improving most of the studied properties, especially moisture resistance. Calcite was found to have nearly similar performance. According to the findings, mineral addition to wood-plastic composites appears to be beneficial; especially moisture resistance can be enhanced without diminishing the other properties or usability in general.

The study examines partner selection criteria and the life cycle impacts on them. The target is to define the relevant criteria that should be applied in case of a partnership. In this context partnership means strategic supplier relationship. It is also examined how these criteria change on the different stages of the product and business life cycle. The empirical part is a description of developing Criteria selection tool in the case company. The study is conducted as a qualitative research using constructive and action research methodologies. The Criteria selection tool is a MS Excel workbook, giving the relevant set of supplier criteria depending on the business case. The most essential criteria, the tool will suggest for partner suppliers, are related to strategic fit, development potential and collaborative aspects. On the early stages of the life cycles the criteria related to research and development and growth potential are significant. On the late stages of the life cycles cost reduction potential becomes very important.

The environmental challenges of plastic packaging industry have increased remarkably along with climate change debate. The interest to study carbon footprints of packaging has increased in packaging industry to find out the real climate change impacts of packaging. In this thesis the greenhouse gas discharges of plastic packaging during their life cycle is examined. The carbon footprint is calculated for food packaging manufactured from plastic laminate. The structure of the laminate is low density polyethylene (PE-LD) and oriented polypropylene (OPP), which have been joined together with laminating adhesive. The purpose is to find out the possibilities to create a carbon footprint calculating tool for plastic packaging and its usability in a plastic packaging manufacturing company. As a carbon footprint calculating method PAS 2050 standard has been used. In the calculations direct and indirect greenhouse gas discharges as well as avoided discharges are considered. Avoided discharges are born for example in packaging waste utilization as energy. The results of the calculations have been used to create a simple calculating tool to be used for similar laminate structures. Although the utilization of the calculating tool is limited to one manufacturing plant because the primary activity data is dependent of geographical location and for example the discharges of used energy in the plant. The results give an approximation of the climate change potential caused by the laminate. It is although noticed that calculations do not include all environmental impacts of plastic packaging´s life cycle.

This three-phase study was conducted to examine the effect of the Breast Cancer Patient’s Pathway program (BCPP) on breast cancer patients’ empowering process from the viewpoint of the difference between knowledge expectations and perceptions of received knowledge, knowledge level, quality of life, anxiety and treatment-related side effects during the breast cancer treatment process. The BCPP is an Internet-based patient education tool describing a flow chart of the patient pathway during the breast treatment process, from breast cancer diagnostic tests to the follow-up after treatments. The ultimate goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of the BCPP to the breast cancer patient’s empowerment by using the patient pathway as a patient education tool. In phase I, a systematic literature review was carried out to chart the solutions and outcomes of Internet-based educational programs for breast cancer patients. In phase II, a Delphi study was conducted to evaluate the usability of web pages and adequacy of their content. In phase III, the BCPP program was piloted with 10 patients and patients were randomised to an intervention group (n=50) and control group (n=48). According to the results of this study, the Internet is an effective patient education tool for increasing knowledge, and BCPP can be used as a patient education method supporting other education methods. However, breast cancer patients’ perceptions of received knowledge were not fulfilled; their knowledge expectations exceed the perceived amount of received knowledge. Although control group patients’ knowledge expectations were met better with the knowledge they received in hospital compared to the patients in the intervention group, no statistical differences were found between the groups in terms of quality of life, anxiety and treatment-related side effects. However, anxiety decreased faster in the intervention group when looking at internal differences between the groups at different measurement times. In the intervention group the relationship between the difference between knowledge expectations and perceptions of received knowledge correlated significantly with quality of life and anxiety. Their knowledge level was also significant higher than in the control group. These results support the theory that the empowering process requires patient’s awareness of knowledge expectations and perceptions of received knowledge. There is a need to develop patient education to meet patients’ perceptions of received knowledge, including oral and written education and BCPP, to fulfil patient’s knowledge expectations and facilitate the empowering process. Further research is needed on the process of cognitive empowerment with breast cancer patients. There is a need for new patient education methods to increase breast cancer patients’ awareness of knowing.

Pumping systems account for over 20 % of all electricity consumption in European industry. Optimization and correct design of such systems is important and there is a reasonable amount of unrealized energy saving potential in old pumping systems. The energy efficiency and therefore also the energy consumption of a pumping system heavily depends on the correct dimensioning and selection of devices. In this work, a graphical optimization tool for pumping systems is developed in Matlab programming language. The tool selects optimal pump, electrical motor and frequency converter for existing pumping process and calculates the life cycle costs of the whole system. The tool could be used as an aid when choosing the machinery and to analyze the energy consumption of existing systems. Results given by the tool are compared to the results of laboratory tests. The selection of pump and motor works reasonably well, but the frequency converter selection still needs development

This study is a qualitative action research by its nature with elements of personal design in the form of a tangible model implementation framework construction. Utilized empirical data has been gathered via two questionnaires in relation to the arranged four workshop events with twelve individual participants. Five of them represented maintenance customers, three maintenance service providers and four equipment providers respectively. Further, there are two main research objectives in proportion to the two complementary focusing areas of this thesis. Firstly, the value-based life-cycle model, which first version has already been developed prior to this thesis, requires updating in order to increase its real-life applicability as an inter-firm decision-making tool in industrial maintenance. This first research objective is fulfilled by improving appearance, intelligibility and usability of the above-mentioned model. In addition, certain new features are also added. The workshop participants from the collaborating companies were reasonably pleased with made changes, although further attention will be required in future on the model’s intelligibility in particular as main results, charts and values were all reckoned as slightly hard to understand. Moreover, upgraded model’s appearance and added new features satisfied them the most. Secondly and more importantly, the premises of the model’s possible inter-firm implementation process need to be considered. This second research objective is delivered in two consecutive steps. At first, a bipartite open-books supported implementation framework is created and its different characteristics discussed in theory. Afterwards, the prerequisites and the pitfalls of increasing inter-organizational information transparency are studied in empirical context. One of the main findings was that the organizations are not yet prepared for network-wide information disclosure as dyadic collaboration was favored instead. However, they would be willing to share information bilaterally at least. Another major result was that the present state of companies’ cost accounting systems will definitely need implementation-wise enhancing in future since accurate and sufficiently detailed maintenance data is not available. Further, it will also be crucial to create supporting and mutually agreed network infrastructure. There are hardly any collaborative models, methods or tools currently in usage. Lastly, the essential questions about mutual trust and predominant purchasing strategies are cooperation-wise important. If inter-organizational activities are expanded, a more relational approach should be favored in this regard. Mutual trust was also recognized as a significant cooperation factor, but it is hard to measure in reality.

The importance of industrial maintenance has been emphasized during the last decades; it is no longer a mere cost item, but one of the mainstays of business. Market conditions have worsened lately, investments in production assets have decreased, and at the same time competition has changed from taking place between companies to competition between networks. Companies have focused on their core functions and outsourced support services, like maintenance, above all to decrease costs. This new phenomenon has led to increasing formation of business networks. As a result, a growing need for new kinds of tools for managing these networks effectively has arisen. Maintenance costs are usually a notable part of the life-cycle costs of an item, and it is important to be able to plan the future maintenance operations for the strategic period of the company or for the whole life-cycle period of the item. This thesis introduces an itemlevel life-cycle model (LCM) for industrial maintenance networks. The term item is used as a common definition for a part, a component, a piece of equipment etc. The constructed LCM is a working tool for a maintenance network (consisting of customer companies that buy maintenance services and various supplier companies). Each network member is able to input their own cost and profit data related to the maintenance services of one item. As a result, the model calculates the net present values of maintenance costs and profits and presents them from the points of view of all the network members. The thesis indicates that previous LCMs for calculating maintenance costs have often been very case-specific, suitable only for the item in question, and they have also been constructed for the needs of a single company, without the network perspective. The developed LCM is a proper tool for the decision making of maintenance services in the network environment; it enables analysing the past and making scenarios for the future, and offers choices between alternative maintenance operations. The LCM is also suitable for small companies in building active networks to offer outsourcing services for large companies. The research introduces also a five-step constructing process for designing a life-cycle costing model in the network environment. This five-step designing process defines model components and structure throughout the iteration and exploitation of user feedback. The same method can be followed to develop other models. The thesis contributes to the literature of value and value elements of maintenance services. It examines the value of maintenance services from the perspective of different maintenance network members and presents established value element lists for the customer and the service provider. These value element lists enable making value visible in the maintenance operations of a networked business. The LCM added with value thinking promotes the notion of maintenance from a “cost maker” towards a “value creator”.
