Tuontipuulla onsuuri merkitys suomalaiselle metsäteollisuudelle. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteitaovat Suomen metsäteollisuuden puuntuonnin tärkeimmän alueen, Luoteis-Venäjän metsävarojen kartoittaminen ja niiden hyödyntämismahdollisuuksien arviointi. Työssä käsitellään myös lyhyesti suoria ulkomaisia investointeja Luoteis-Venäjän metsäsektorille. Luoteis-Venäjällä on suuremmat metsävarat kuin muulla Euroopalla yhteensä. Koko maailmassa on vain 5 valtiota, jolla olisi suuremmat metsävarat kuin sillä. Eniten metsiä Luoteis-Venäjällä on Komin tasavallassa ja Arkangelin alueella. Kuusi ja mänty ovat yleisimmät puulajit. Hyvien iikenneyhteyksien varsilta metsät on hakattu ja jätetty uudistamatta, minkä seurauksena koivu ja haapa ovat vallanneet alaa havupuilta. Niinpä alueen metsäteollisuus, etenkin sahateollisuus kärsii puupulasta. Suomen metsäteollisuus on sen sijaan hyötynyt siitä, että koivukuitupuuta on runsaasti saatavilla. Metsävarojen hyödyntämisen suurimmatesteet ovat harva ja huonokuntoinen metsätieverkosto sekä metsien riittämätön hoito. Venäläisestä näkökulmasta alueen metsävarat ovat vajaakäytössä: vuotuiset hakkuut ovat alle puolet kasvusta, suuri osa puusta viedään raakapuuna ulkomaille, ja alueen metsäteollisuuden tuotteiden jalostusarvo jää alhaiseksi. Suoria ulkomaisia investointeja Luoteis-Venäjän metsäsektorille houkuttelevat suuret puuvarat, halpa energia ja tulevaisuudessa etenkin kasvavat markkinat. Investointejahaittaavat huono infrastruktuuri, korruptio ja epävarmuus maan kehityksestä.

LiDAR is an advanced remote sensing technology with many applications, including forest inventory. The most common type is ALS (airborne laser scanning). The method is successfully utilized in many developed markets, where it is replacing traditional forest inventory methods. However, it is innovative for Russian market, where traditional field inventory dominates. ArboLiDAR is a forest inventory solution that engages LiDAR, color infrared imagery, GPS ground control plots and field sample plots, developed by Arbonaut Ltd. This study is an industrial market research for LiDAR technology in Russia focused on customer needs. Russian forestry market is very attractive, because of large growing stock volumes. It underwent drastic changes in 2006, but it is still in transitional stage. There are several types of forest inventory, both with public and private funding. Private forestry enterprises basically need forest inventory in two cases – while making coupe demarcation before timber harvesting and as a part of forest management planning, that is supposed to be done every ten years on the whole leased territory. The study covered 14 companies in total that include private forestry companies with timber harvesting activities, private forest inventory providers, state subordinate companies and forestry software developer. The research strategy is multiple case studies with semi-structured interviews as the main data collection technique. The study focuses on North-West Russia, as it is the most developed Russian region in forestry. The research applies the Voice of the Customer (VOC) concept to elicit customer needs of Russian forestry actors and discovers how these needs are met. It studies forest inventory methods currently applied in Russia and proposes the model of method comparison, based on Multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach, mainly on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Required product attributes are classified in accordance with Kano model. The answer about suitability of LiDAR technology is ambiguous, since many details should be taken into account.

The aim of this study is to examine the level of stock market co-movement in the BRICS countries and three major industrialized countries (Japan, UK and USA). While analyzing the interdependence and integration of markets, two subsets are examined: before (2000 – 2007) and during the global financial crisis (2007-2011). Generally, interdependence across markets is likely to increase during a highly volatile period. This is problematic because if it were true, the main benefit of international diversification would be reduced at times when it is most needed. The results reveal the dominant role of the US financial markets over the examined time period. Empirical studies of this research paper indicate that cross-market linkages have become slightly stronger during the ongoing subprime crisis than before crisis. However, results also show that an investor may obtain some international diversification benefits by investing especially in the BRICS countries despite the fact of unstable economic condition and growing globalization.

A rapidly growing gaming industry, which specializes on PC, console, online and other games, attracts attention of investors and analysts, who try to understand what drives changes of the gaming industry companies’ stock prices. This master thesis shows the evidence that, besides long-established types of events (M&A and dividend payments), the companies’ stock price changes depend on industry-specific events. I analyzed specific for gaming industry events - game releases with respect to its subdivisions: new games-sequels, games ratings and subdivision according to a developer of a game (self-developed by publisher or outsourced). The master thesis analyzes stock prices of 55 companies from gaming industry from all over the world. The research period covers 5 year, spreading from April 2008 to April 2013. Executed with an event study method, results of the research show that all the analyzed events types have significant influence on the stock prices of the gaming industry companies. The current master thesis suggests that acquisitions in the industry affect positively bidders’ and targets’ stock prices. Mergers events cause positive stock price reactions as well. But dividends payments and game releases events influence negatively on the stock prices. Game releases’ effect is up to -2.2% of cumulative average abnormal return (CAAR) drop during the first ten days after the game releases. Having researched different kinds of events and identified the direction of their impact, the current paper can be of high value for investors, seeking profits in the gaming industry, and other interested parties.
