Online Community System Development, Case PROFCOM

The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is the development of online community. Nowadays Internet lets user to collaborate and share information online. Internet is also full of communities and the number of community users is continuously rising. Companies have also noticed this and want to make use of it. The result of the work was an online community for the use of PROFCOM research project. At the same time information was gathered about what kind of platforms are available as a backbone for an online community. Designing and developing of the online community provided experience about Drupal-environment. It also gave pros and cons of Drupal’s features. Drupal is a multifunctional software, which can handle big online communities, but its installation and maintenance is, however, reasonably simple.

Evaluating Web Content Management Systems Compatibility for Implementing Online Communities

The purpose of this study is to study whether a Web CMS can be used to implement and host an online community. The study is divided into two parts. The theoretical part contains the definition of Web CMS and clarifies the relation between an online community and a social software. The first part also defines the parameters, which must be taken account when choosing a Web CMS for hosting an online community. The practical part of the study contains analyses of three Web CMSs, Drupal, Liferay and Plone. All the three Web CMSs were analyzed using the technical and social parameters discovered in the theoretical part of the study. The primary objective is to investigate whether the selected Web CMS can be used to implement and host an online community. If hosting is possible, the secondary objective is to investigate whether the selected Web CMS have an effect to the online community.

Kuorman tasaus web-palvelimissa

Web-palvelussa sivuston suorituskyky muodostaa suuren osan käyttökokemuksen mielekkyydestä. Sivuston ollessa kuormitetumpi kuin normaalisti, saattaa se toimia tavallista hitaammin. Tasaamalla yhden web-palvelimen kuormaa muille palvelimille, joko laitteisto tai ohjelmistopohjaisella kuormantasauksella, voidaan saavuttaa merkittäviä suorituskykyparannuksia koko palvelulle. Teoriaosassa selvitettiin kuormantasaukseen soveltuvien algoritmien toimintaa sekä tietokantapohjaista replikaatiota, joka välittää saamansa tiedon lähes välittömästi toiselle palvelimelle. Apachen kuormantasausmoduuliin sekä sen sisältämiin algoritmeihin luotiin myös katsaus teoriaosassa. Varsinaisessa työssä luotiin Apachen kuormantasauspalvelimen ja kahden suorituspalvelimen avulla toimiva palvelinjärjestelmä. Kuormantasaimeen asennettiin käyttöön tahmeat sessiot, joiden toimintaa selvitettiin Drupal-ohjelman avulla. Apachessa on ollut ongelmia tahmeiden sessioiden kanssa, mutta työssä huomattiin kaiken toimivan mainiosti. Kuormantasaus ja tietokantojen replikaatio toimi, kuten odotettiin.

Logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurannan pilottijärjestelmän toteutus

Logistiikan toimintaympäristön seuranta on yksi Hämeen rykmentin Huoltokoulun tutkimus- ja kehittämisosaston tehtävistä. Logistiikan toimintaympäristön seuranta on luonteeltaan jatkuvaa eri osa-alueiden tapahtumien, ilmiöiden ja trendien tarkkailua ja analysointia. Seurantaa kohdennetaan vuosittain muiden tutkimustehtävien, teemojen tai muuten ajankohtaisten ilmiöiden kautta. Logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurantaan ei kuitenkaan ole käytössä yhteisiä työskentelymenetelmiä eikä seurantatiedon taltiointia ja jakamista helpottavia työkaluja. Tutkimuksen pääongelmana oli toteuttaa uusi yhteistyön mahdollistava www-pohjainen työkalu logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurantaan. Lisäksi työssä selvitettiin yleisimpien/suosittujen sisällönhallintajärjestelmien, Drupalin, Managing Newsin ja Mediawikin, soveltuvuutta logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurantaan. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan toteutus, joka pitää sisällään pienimuotoisina myös suunnittelu-, vertailu- ja testausosiot. Tutkimuksessa toteutetaan Huoltokoulun tutkimus- ja kehittämisosaston tutkijoiden käyttöön logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurannan pilottijärjestelmä alustavien vaatimusmäärittelyn pohjalta. Pilotin tavoitteena on mahdollistaa käyttäjän vaatimusten tarkentaminen ja seurannan viitekehyksen tarkentaminen. Johtopäätöksenä voidaan todeta, että tässä tutkimuksessa käytetyt wiki-järjestelmät ja www-sisällönhallintajärjestelmät soveltuvat erittäin hyvin logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurannan tarpeisiin. Työssä toteutettua työkalua, pilottia, voidaan hyödyntää logistiikan toimintaympäristön seurannan kehittämisessä.

Search Engine Optimization Methods & Search Engine Indexing for CMS Applications

Search engine optimization & marketing is a set of processes widely used on websites to improve search engine rankings which generate quality web traffic and increase ROI. Content is the most important part of any website. CMS web development is now become very essential for most of organizations and online businesses to develop their online system and websites. Every online business using a CMS wants to get users (customers) to make profit and ROI. This thesis comprises a brief study of existing SEO methods, tools and techniques and how they can be implemented to optimize a content base website. In results, the study provides recommendations about how to use SEO methods; tools and techniques to optimize CMS based websites on major search engines. This study compares popular CMS systems like Drupal, WordPress and Joomla SEO features and how implementing SEO can be improved on these CMS systems. Having knowledge of search engine indexing and search engine working is essential for a successful SEO campaign. This work is a complete guideline for web developers or SEO experts who want to optimize a CMS based website on all major search engines.

Usability comparison of open source content management systems

The purpose of this thesis is to study, investigate and compare usability of open source cms. The thesis examines and compares usability aspect of some open source cms. The research is divided into two complementary parts –theoretical part and analytical part. The theoretical part mainly describes open source web content management systems, usability and the evaluation methods. The analytical part is to compare and analyze the results found from the empirical research. Heuristic evaluation method was used to measure usability problems in the interfaces. The study is fairly limited in scope; six tasks were designed and implemented in each interface for discovering defects in the interfaces. Usability problems were rated according to their level of severity. Time it took by each task, level of problem’s severity and type of heuristics violated will be recorded, analyzed and compared. The results of this study indicate that the comparing systems provide usable interfaces, and WordPress is recognized as the most usable system.
