This Master´s thesis investigates the performance of the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 APROS model in case of fast transients. The thesis includes a general description of the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 nuclear power plants and of the most important safety systems. The theoretical background of the APROS code as well as the scope and the content of the Olkiluoto 1 and 2 APROS model are also described. The event sequences of the anticipated operation transients considered in the thesis are presented in detail as they will form the basis for the analysis of the APROS calculation results. The calculated fast operational transient situations comprise loss-of-load cases and two cases related to a inadvertent closure of one main steam isolation valve. As part of the thesis work, the inaccurate initial data values found in the original 1-D reactor core model were corrected. The input data needed for the creation of a more accurate 3-D core model were defined. The analysis of the APROS calculation results showed that while the main results were in good accordance with the measured plant data, also differences were detected. These differences were found to be caused by deficiencies and uncertainties related to the calculation model. According to the results the reactor core and the feedwater systems cause most of the differences between the calculated and measured values. Based on these findings, it will be possible to develop the APROS model further to make it a reliable and accurate tool for the analysis of the operational transients and possible plant modifications.

Diplomityö käsittelee kiehutusvesilaitosten transienttien ja onnettomuuksien analysointia APROS-ohjelmiston avulla. Työ on tehty Teollisuuden Voima Oy:n (TVO) Olkiluoto 1 ja 2 laitosyksiköiden mallin pohjalta. Raportissa esitetään ohjelmiston käyttämiä yhtälöitäja laskentamalleja yleisellä tasolla. Työssä esitellään laitoksen yleispiirteet turvallisuustoimintoineen ja kuvataan ohjelmaan suureksi osaksi aiemmin luotua laskentamallia. Työssä on luetteloitu voimassa olevatlisensiointianalyysit, joiden joukosta on valittu laskentatapauksia ohjelmiston suorituskyvyn arviointia varten.

The chemistry of gold dissolution in alkaline cyanide solution has continually received attention and new rate equations expressing the gold leaching are still developed. The effect of leaching parameters on gold gold cyanidation is studied in this work in order to optimize the leaching process. A gold leaching model, based on the well-known shrinking-core model, is presented in this work. It is proposed that the reaction takes place at the reacting particle surface which is continuously reduced as the reaction proceeds. The model parameters are estimated by comparing experimental data and simulations. The experimental data used in this work was obtained from Ling et al. (1996) and de Andrade Lima and Hodouin (2005). Two different rate equations, where the unreacted amount of gold is considered in one equation, are investigated. In this work, it is presented that the reaction at the surface is the rate controlling step since there is no internal diffusion limitation. The model considering the effect of non-reacting gold shows that the reaction orders are consistent with the experimental observations reported by Ling et al. (1996) and de Andrade Lima and Hodouin (2005). However, it should be noted that the model obtained in this work is based on assumptions of no side reactions, no solid-liquid mass transfer resistances and no effect from temperature.

In this thesis, general approach is devised to model electrolyte sorption from aqueous solutions on solid materials. Electrolyte sorption is often considered as unwanted phenomenon in ion exchange and its potential as an independent separation method has not been fully explored. The solid sorbents studied here are porous and non-porous organic or inorganic materials with or without specific functional groups attached on the solid matrix. Accordingly, the sorption mechanisms include physical adsorption, chemisorption on the functional groups and partition restricted by electrostatic or steric factors. The model is tested in four Cases Studies dealing with chelating adsorption of transition metal mixtures, physical adsorption of metal and metalloid complexes from chloride solutions, size exclusion of electrolytes in nano-porous materials and electrolyte exclusion of electrolyte/non-electrolyte mixtures. The model parameters are estimated using experimental data from equilibrium and batch kinetic measurements, and they are used to simulate actual single-column fixed-bed separations. Phase equilibrium between the solution and solid phases is described using thermodynamic Gibbs-Donnan model and various adsorption models depending on the properties of the sorbent. The 3-dimensional thermodynamic approach is used for volume sorption in gel-type ion exchangers and in nano-porous adsorbents, and satisfactory correlation is obtained provided that both mixing and exclusion effects are adequately taken into account. 2-Dimensional surface adsorption models are successfully applied to physical adsorption of complex species and to chelating adsorption of transition metal salts. In the latter case, comparison is also made with complex formation models. Results of the mass transport studies show that uptake rates even in a competitive high-affinity system can be described by constant diffusion coefficients, when the adsorbent structure and the phase equilibrium conditions are adequately included in the model. Furthermore, a simplified solution based on the linear driving force approximation and the shrinking-core model is developed for very non-linear adsorption systems. In each Case Study, the actual separation is carried out batch-wise in fixed-beds and the experimental data are simulated/correlated using the parameters derived from equilibrium and kinetic data. Good agreement between the calculated and experimental break-through curves is usually obtained indicating that the proposed approach is useful in systems, which at first sight are very different. For example, the important improvement in copper separation from concentrated zinc sulfate solution at elevated temperatures can be correctly predicted by the model. In some cases, however, re-adjustment of model parameters is needed due to e.g. high solution viscosity.

This master's thesis examines scenarios, which can lead to a reactivity excursion due to boron dilution events in Loviisa nuclear power plant. This thesis also describes how the boron diluted slugs are modelled in the Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) model. At the current model, the valuation of the reactivity risk due to boron dilution has been very conservative, and therefore the reactivity risk during an outage is as much as 9 % of Core Damage Frequency (CDF) and Large Release Frequency (LRF). The main objective of the thesis is to decrease the annual core damage and Large Release Frequency by reducing conservative assumptions in the probabilistic modelling of boron dilution events. The core behavior during boron dilution events was modelled and reported in 2011 by Fortum using three-dimensional core model of Apros. The results of these analyses were reported same year by Fortum. According to the reported results and the analyses made by StarNode visualization program, it seems that some changes could be made in the boron dilution fault trees of the PRA model. As a result, the reactivity risk was decreased to 0.7 % of the annual CDF. In the other words, the total annual CDF and LRF were decreased 8.5 % due to the changes made in the PRA model. However the analyses made by Apros include some uncertainty. The accuracy of the analyses should be validated before making these changes in the official PRA model.

Hydrometallurgical process modeling is the main objective of this Master’s thesis work. Three different leaching processes namely, high pressure pyrite oxidation, direct oxidation zinc concentrate (sphalerite) leaching and gold chloride leaching using rotating disc electrode (RDE) are modeled and simulated using gPROMS process simulation program in order to evaluate its model building capabilities. The leaching mechanism in each case is described in terms of a shrinking core model. The mathematical modeling carried out included process model development based on available literature, estimation of reaction kinetic parameters and assessment of the model reliability by checking the goodness fit and checking the cross correlation between the estimated parameters through the use of correlation matrices. The estimated parameter values in each case were compared with those obtained using the Modest simulation program. Further, based on the estimated reaction kinetic parameters, reactor simulation and modeling for direct oxidation zinc concentrate (sphalerite) leaching is carried out in Aspen Plus V8.6. The zinc leaching autoclave is based on Cominco reactor configuration and is modeled as a series of continuous stirred reactors (CSTRs). The sphalerite conversion is calculated and a sensitivity analysis is carried out so to determine the optimum reactor operation temperature and optimum oxygen mass flow rate. In this way, the implementation of reaction kinetic models into the process flowsheet simulation environment has been demonstrated.

The aim of the study was to create an easily upgradable product costing model for laser welded hollow core steel panels to help in pricing decisions. The theory section includes a literature review to identify traditional and modern cost accounting methodologies, which are used by manufacturing companies. The theory section also presents the basics of steel panel structures and their manufacturing methods and manufacturing costs based on previous research. Activity-Based costing turned out to be the most appropriate methodology for the costing model because of wide product variations. Activity analysis and the determination of cost drivers based on observations and interviews were the key steps in the creation of the model. The created model was used to test how panel parameters affect the costs caused by the main manufacturing stages and materials. By comparing cost structures, it was possible to find the panel types that are the most economic and uneconomic to manufacture. A sensitivity analysis proved that the model gives sufficiently reliable cost information to support pricing decisions. More reliable cost information could be achieved by determining the cost drivers more accurately. Alternative methods for manufacturing the cores were compared with the model. The comparison proved that roll forming can be more advantageous and flexible than press brake bending. However, more extensive research showed that roll forming is possible only when the cores are designed to be manufactured by roll forming. Due to that fact, when new panels are designed consideration should be given to the possibility of using roll forming.
