Euroopan unioni on tiukentanut teiden laitteiden ja tukirakenteiden törmäysturvallisuusvaatimuksia. Uuden standardoinnin tarkoituksena on lieventää ajoneuvon kuljettajan ja matkustajan vammojen vakavuutta ajoneuvon törmätessä tielaitteiden pysyviin rakenteisiin. Käytännössä rakenteiden tulee hidastaa ajoneuvon nopeutta hallitusti eri törmäysnopeuksilla, jolloin matkustajaan kohdistuvat kiihtyvyydet eivät aiheuta vakavaa loukkaantumisriskiä. Vuonna 2005 Mikkelin ammattikorkeakoulun YTI-tutkimuskeskus ja Tehomet Oy kehittivät ensimmäisen version törmäysystävällisestä valaisinpylväästä. Tässä diplomityössä tavoitteena oli kehittää aikaisemmin tehdystä versiosta helpommin valmistettava versio sekä parantaa pylvään törmäyskäyttäytymistä. Valmistusmenetelmistä valittiin pultruusio, kuitukelaus, alipaineinjektio ja RTM. Menetelmille suunniteltiin soveltuvat rakenteet ja laskettiin rakenteiden valmistuskustannukset. Pultruusiolla, alipaineinjektiolla ja RTM:11ä valmistettiin koe-erä esitörmäyskokeita varten. Esitörmäyskokeiden jälkeen valittiin valmistusmenetelmäksi RTM. TKK/Tielaboratorion virallisissa testeissä kehitetylle pylväälle myönnettiin HE2-turvaluokitus. Hanketta jatketaan kehittämällä valmistusprosessia tehokkaammaksi uudistamalla muottitekniikkaa sekä ottamalla käyttöön lujiteaihiot. Tavoitteena on käynnistää tuotanto keväällä 2008. Kehitetty pylväs esitellään kansainvälisillä "Sähkö, Tele, Valo- ja AV 2008"-messuilla Jyväskylän Paviljongissa 6.-8.2.2008.

As long as the incidence of stroke continues to grow, patients with large right hemisphere lesions suffering from hemispatial neglect will require neuropsychological evaluation and rehabilitation. The inability to process information especially that coming from the left side accompanied by the magnetic orientation to the ipsilesional side represents a real challenge for rehabilitation. This dissertation is concerned with crucial aspects in the clinical neuropsychological practice of hemispatial neglect. In studying the convergence of the visual and behavioural test batteries in the assessment of neglect, nine of the seventeen patients, who completed both the conventional subtests of the Behavioural Inattention Test and the Catherine Bergego Scale assessments, showed a similar severity of neglect and thus good convergence in both tests. However, patients with neglect and hemianopia had poorer scores in the line bisection test and they displayed stronger neglect in behaviour than patients with pure neglect. The second study examined, whether arm activation, modified from the Constraint Induced Movement Therapy, could be applied as neglect rehabilitation alone without any visual training. Twelve acute- or subacute patients were randomized into two rehabilitation groups: arm activation training or traditional voluntary visual scanning training. Neglect was ameliorated significantly or almost significantly in both training groups due to rehabilitation with the effect being maintained for at least six months. In studying the reflections of hemispatial neglect on visual memory, the associations of severity of neglect and visual memory performances were explored. The performances of acute and subacute patients with hemispatial neglect were compared with the performances of matched healthy control subjects. As hypothesized, encoding from the left side and immediate recall of visual material were significantly compromised in patients with neglect. Another mechanism of neglect affecting visual memory processes is observed in delayed visual reproduction. Delayed recall demands that the individual must make a match helped by a cue or it requires a search for relevant material from long-term memory storage. In the case of representational neglect, the search may succeed but the left side of the recollected memory still fails to open. Visual and auditory evoked potentials were measured in 21 patients with hemispatial neglect. Stimuli coming from the left or right were processed differently in both sensory modalities in acute and subacute patients as compared with the chronic patients. The differences equalized during the course of recovery. Recovery from hemispatial neglect was strongly associated with early rehabilitation and with the severity of neglect. Extinction was common in patients with neglect and it did not ameliorate with the recovery of neglect. The presence of pusher symptom hampered amelioration of visual neglect in acute and subacute stroke patients, whereas depression did not have any significant effect in the early phases after the stroke. However, depression had an unfavourable effect on recovery in the chronic phase. In conclusion, the combination of neglect and hemianopia may explain part of the residual behavioural neglect that is no longer evident in visual testing. Further research is needed in order to determine which specific rehabilitation procedures would be most beneficial in patients suffering the combination of neglect and hemianopia. Arm activation should be included in the rehabilitation programs of neglect; this is a useful technique for patients who need bedside treatment in the acute phase. With respect to the deficit in visual memory in association with neglect, the possible mechanisms of lateralized deficit in delayed recall need to be further examined and clarified. Intensive treatment induced recovery in both severe and moderate visual neglect long after the first two to first three months after the stroke.

The thesis studies the launch campaign of Big Brother Finland, especially from the viewpoint of on-air promotion. Interest to the subject arose when participating in the campaign as an on-air promotion planner together with Subtv's marketing director, on-air promotion editor and the channel's advertising agency. The launch of the campaign was a challenge due to the format, since not a lot of information can be revealed before the start of the program. When the planning started, all the material consisted of two logos. The first season of the Finnish version of Big Brother begun on Subtv August 2005. The goal of the program was to become a topic of discussion on TV on the fall 2005 and to raise the profile of the channel. The goal of the launch was to get good ratings for the first episode. The launch campaign was also supposed to open up the format to the viewers and to arouse interest in the show. Secrecy and the size of the program were set to be the marketing tones of the launch. Although partly different messages were told via on-air promotion and external media, the campaign was congruent in visual design. In the study, interviews of Subtv's staff, campaign plans and notes were used as research material. From the aspect of affecting images and emotions, the finished campaign promos and other on-air elements were analyzed. In on-air promotion, all choices in audio and visual design affect the outcome and therefore the images that the viewer constructs. The two promo series were made to affect emotions and to awaken curiosity. Other on-air elements were merely used to present program information. The campaign and the series were accepted with enthusiasm. The launch of the second season was even more massive than the first. Participation in the launch campaign of Big Brother Finland was an essential experience in the development of professional identity. When one has taken part in the creation of a massive campaign from scarce materials, tools are given to future assignments in the field of on-air promotion.

The problem of understanding how humans perceive the quality of a reproduced image is of interest to researchers of many fields related to vision science and engineering: optics and material physics, image processing (compression and transfer), printing and media technology, and psychology. A measure for visual quality cannot be defined without ambiguity because it is ultimately the subjective opinion of an “end-user” observing the product. The purpose of this thesis is to devise computational methods to estimate the overall visual quality of prints, i.e. a numerical value that combines all the relevant attributes of the perceived image quality. The problem is limited to consider the perceived quality of printed photographs from the viewpoint of a consumer, and moreover, the study focuses only on digital printing methods, such as inkjet and electrophotography. The main contributions of this thesis are two novel methods to estimate the overall visual quality of prints. In the first method, the quality is computed as a visible difference between the reproduced image and the original digital (reference) image, which is assumed to have an ideal quality. The second method utilises instrumental print quality measures, such as colour densities, measured from printed technical test fields, and connects the instrumental measures to the overall quality via subjective attributes, i.e. attributes that directly contribute to the perceived quality, using a Bayesian network. Both approaches were evaluated and verified with real data, and shown to predict well the subjective evaluation results.

Este estudio tiene como objetivo encontrar las ideologías y las concepciones ocultas sobre las personas latinas en la publicidad televisiva finlandesa. Las hipótesis planteadas del análisis incluyen las siguientes: que el uso de la lengua española en los anuncios bajo análisis tiene el fin de crear una imagen estereotipada, exótica, pero a la vez peyorativa de los latinos, y reforzar la impresión ya anteriormente conocida de ellos como inferiores a la élite blanca, con carácter temperamental y apasionado; como personas despreocupadas y descuidadas, hasta deshonestas en que no se puede confiar. La fundación teorética y metodológica del trabajo reside en el Análisis Crítico del Discurso (ACD) y el análisis crítico semiótico de las imágenes. Pretende encontrar las construcciones ideológicas discriminadoras que se reproducen a través del discurso mediático en forma de los temas y, ante todo los tópicos. Con los tópicos se refiere a temas de nivel más abstracto que los que aparecen explícitamente en los textos. El vínculo lingüístico es de la teoría de apropiación lingüística de elementos de la lengua española al inglés, llamada el Mock Spanish, pero en este estudio se aplica al finés. El análisis propone demostrar qué tipo de ideologías y actitudes se tratan de comunicar realmente en los textos. La parte semiótica del análisis de los signos observa el material empírico con el fin de averiguar las relaciones sociales de poder que se transmiten en las imágenes. Las imágenes contienen mensajes sobre el contexto y la distancia social que pueden ser descifrados analizando, por ejemplo, los ángulos de la cámara y la posición del fotógrafo en relación con el objeto de la fotografía. El material del análisis empírico se consiste en seis anuncios televisivos, estrenados en los canales de televisión pública finlandesa entre los años 2008 y 2016. La selección de los mismos fue realizada según el hecho de que todos emplean principalmente el español como lengua hablada y están subtitulados en finés. En unos se han escogido actores hablantes nativos y en otros finlandeses, pero todos los actores utilizan el español en sus réplicas, y solo la parte informativa al final del anuncio está en finés. Todas las compañías, productores de los productos promocionados, menos Lidl, recalcan ser finlandesas, aunque, por ejemplo, en el caso de dos empresas, son consorcios multinacionales, sociedades anónimas, y sus propietarios extranjeros. El nacionalismo forma parte esencial de la imagen que desean ofrecer para el público.
