Työssä tarkastellaan kompostointiin perustuvaa biotermistä kuivausprosessia, prosessiin vaikuttavia tekijöitä sekä sen soveltuvuutta metsäteollisuuden mekaanisesti kuivatun jätevesilietteen lisäkuivaukseen polttoa varten. Tutkimukseen kuuluvien paperitehtaiden lietteillä suoritettavien biotermisten kuivauskokeiden avulla tutkitaan tehtaiden lietteiden sopivuutta biotermiseen kuivaukseen. Lisäksi tehtaille suunnitellaan kuivauskokeiden ja paperitehtailla tehtävien selvitysten perusteella bioterminen kuivauslaitos. Suomen metsäteollisuus tuottaa nykyisin noin 400 000 – 500 000 kuiva-ainetonnia jätevedenpuhdistamolietteitä vuosittain. Tutkimukseen kuuluvan kahden tehdasintegraatin biologisilla puhdistamoilla syntyvien jätevesilietteiden määrät ovat keskimäärin 33 000 ja 15 000 kuiva-ainetonnia vuodessa. Ongelmana metsäteollisuudessa on jätevesilietteen alhainen kuiva-ainepitoisuus lietteen mekaanisen kuivauksen jälkeen. Tämä vaikeuttaa lietteen polttamista voimalaitoskattilassa ja lietteen poltosta talteen saatavan energian määrä jää vähäiseksi. Mekaanisesti kuivatun sekalietteen käsittely biotermisesti kuivaamalla mahdollistaa lietteen kuiva-ainepitoisuuden nostamisen yli 55 %:in kuiva-ainepitoisuuteen. Tämä helpottaa lietteen polton ongelmia ja kasvattaa lietteen poltosta talteen saatavan energian määrää. Bioterminen kuivaus soveltuu hyvin tutkimukseen kuuluvien tehtaiden sekalietteen kuivaukseen. Suositeltava sekalietteen lähtökuiva-ainepitoisuuden arvo on välillä 30 – 35 % ja tukiaineeksi lisättävän kuoren määrä noin 0,5 m3 yhtä lietekuutiota kohden. Kuivausprosessin kesto on tällöin 10 – 14 vuorokautta, kun haluttu lietepolttoaineen kuiva-ainepitoisuus on vähintään 55 %. Tehtaille suunnitelluissa laitoksissa käsiteltävä lietemäärä on noin 40 000 märkätonnia vuodessa. Tutkimukseen kuuluvalle paperitehtaalle yhdistetyn lietteenkuivausprosessin kustannukset ovat edullisimmat kun liete kuivataan ennen biotermistä kuivausta mekaanisesti 35 %:in kuiva-ainepitoisuuteen. Tällöin lietteenkäsittelyn hinnaksi tulee noin 150 mk/t.

In the theoretical part, the different polymerisation catalysts are introduced and the phenomena related to mixing in the stirred tank reactor are presented. Also the advantages and challenges related to scale-up are discussed. The aim of the applied part was to design and implement an intermediate-sized reactor useful for scale-up studies. The reactor setting was tested making one batch of Ziegler–Natta polypropylene catalyst. The catalyst preparation with a designed equipment setting succeeded and the catalyst was analysed. The analyses of the catalyst were done, because the properties of the catalyst were compared to the normal properties of Ziegler–Natta polypropylene catalyst. The total titanium content of the catalyst was slightly higher than in normal Ziegler–Natta polypropylene catalyst, but the magnesium and aluminium content of the catalyst were in the normal level. By adjusting the siphonation tube and adding one washing step the titanium content of the catalyst could be decreased. The particle size of the catalyst was small, but the activity was in a normal range. The size of the catalyst particles could be increased by decreasing the stirring speed. During the test run, it was noticed that some improvements for the designed equipment setting could be done. For example more valves for the chemical feed line need to be added to ensure inert conditions during the catalyst preparation. Also nitrogen for the reactor needs to separate from other nitrogen line. With this change the pressure in the reactor can be kept as desired during the catalyst preparation. The proposals for improvements are presented in the applied part. After these improvements are done, the equipment setting is ready for start-up. The computational fluid dynamics model for the designed reactor was provided by cooperation with Lappeenranta University of Technology. The experiments showed that for adequate mixing with one impeller, stirring speed of 600 rpm is needed. The computational fluid dynamics model with two impellers showed that there was no difference in the mixing efficiency if the upper impeller were pumping downwards or upwards.

Western societies have been faced with the fact that overweight, impaired glucose regulation and elevated blood pressure are already prevalent in pediatric populations. This will inevitably mean an increase in later manifestations of cardio-metabolic diseases. The dilemma has been suggested to stem from fetal life and it is surmised that the early nutritional environment plays an important role in the process called programming. The aim of the present study was to characterize early nutritional determinants associating with cardio-metabolic risk factors in fetuses, infants and children. Further, the study was designated to establish whether dietary counseling initiated in early pregnancy can modify this cascade. Healthy mother-child pairs (n=256) participating in a dietary intervention study were followed from early pregnancy to childhood. The intervention included detailed dietary counseling by a nutritionist targeting saturated fat intake in excess of recommendations and fiber consumption below recommendations. Cardio-metabolic programming was studied by characterizing the offspring’s cardio-metabolic risk factors such as over-activation of the autonomic nervous system, elevated blood pressure and adverse metabolic status (e.g. serum high split proinsulin concentration). Fetal cardiac sympathovagal activation was measured during labor. Postnatally, children’s blood pressure was measured at six-month and four-year follow-up visits. Further, infants’ metabolic status was assessed by means of growth and serum biomarkers (32-33 split proinsulin, leptin and adiponectin) at the age of six months. This study proved that fetal cardiac sympathovagal activity was positively associated with maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index indicating adverse cardio-metabolic programming in the offspring. Further, a reduced risk of high split proinsulin in infancy and lower blood pressure in childhood were found in those offspring whose mothers’ weight gain and amount and type of fats in the diet during pregnancy were as recommended. Of note, maternal dietary counseling from early pregnancy onwards could ameliorate the offspring’s metabolic status by reducing the risk of high split proinsulin concentration, although it had no effect on the other cardio-metabolic markers in the offspring. At postnatal period breastfeeding proved to entail benefits in cardio-metabolic programming. Finally, the recommended dietary protein and total fat content in the child’s diet were important nutritional determinants reducing blood pressure at the age of four years. The intrauterine and immediate postnatal period comprise a window of opportunity for interventions aiming to reduce the risk of cardio-metabolic disorders and brings the prospect of achieving health benefits over one generation.

The offset printing process is complex and involves the meeting of two essentially complex materials, printing ink and paper, upon which the final product is formed. It can therefore be expected that a multitude of chemical and physical interactions and mechanisms take place at the ink-paper interface. Interactions between ink and paper are of interest to both the papermakers and ink producers, as they wish to achieve better quality in the final product. The objective of this work is to clarify the combined influence of paper coating structure, printing ink and fountain solution on ink setting and the problems related to ink setting. A further aim is to identify the mechanisms that influence ink setting problems, and to be able to counteract them by changing properties of the coating layer or by changing the properties of the ink. The work carried out for this thesis included use of many techniques ranging from standard paper and printability tests to advanced optical techniques for detection of ink filaments during ink levelling. Modern imaging methods were applied for assessment of ink filament remain sizes and distribution of ink components inside pigment coating layers. Gravimetric filtration method and assessment of print rub using Ink-Surface-Interaction-Tester (ISIT) were utilized to study the influence of ink properties on ink setting. The chemical interactions were observed with the help of modified thin layer chromatography and contact angle measurements using both conventional and high speed imaging. The results of the papers in this thesis link the press operational parameters to filament sizes and show the influence of these parameters to filament size distribution. The relative importance between the press operation parameters was shown to vary. The size distribution of filaments is important in predicting the ink setting behaviour, which was highlighted by the dynamic gloss and ink setting studies. Prediction of ink setting behaviour was also further improved by use of separate permeability factors for different ink types in connection to filtration equations. The roles of ink components were studied in connection to ink absorption and mechanism of print rub. Total solids content and ratio of linseed oil to mineral oil were found to determine the degree of print rub on coated papers. Wax addition improved print rub resistance, but would not decrease print rub as much as lowering the total solids content in the ink. Linseed oil was shown to absorb into pigment coating pores by mechanism of adsorption to pore walls, which highlights the need for sufficient pore surface area for improved chromatographic separation of ink components. These results should help press operators, suppliers of printing presses, papermakers and suppliers to papermakers, to better understand the material and operating conditions of the press as it relates to various print quality issues. Even though paper is in competition with electronic media, high quality printed products are still in demand. The results should provide useful information for this segment of the industry.

In this thesis the sludge of Southeastern-Finland, the companies which produce sludge and the current methods and those still in development have been surveyed. 85 % of the waste sludge from industry comes from forest industries. The sludge from municipal waste water treatment plants is mostly used as a raw material for bioplants. The sludge from forest industry is mostly incinerated. New circulation methods increase the recycling value of the waste by creating new products but they still lack a full-scale plant. The political pressure from Europe and the politics driven by the government of Finland will drive circular economy forward and thus uplifting the processing options of waste slurries. This work is divided in two parts, first contains the survey and the second contains the experimental part and the operational methods based on the survey. In the experimental part wet hard sheet waste sludge was de-watered with shaking filter and the applications for waste sludge from cellulose factory were considered. The results are, that the wet hard sheet waste sludge can be dewatered to high enough total solids content for the inteded use. Also, the cellulose waste sludge has too high Cd content in almost all of the batches to be used as a land improment.
