There is currently little empirical knowledge regarding the construction of a musician’s identity and social class. With a theoretical framework based on Bourdieu’s (1984) distinction theory, Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) theory of ecological systems, and the identity theories of Erikson (1950; 1968) and Marcia (1966), a survey called the Musician’s Social Background and Identity Questionnaire (MSBIQ) is developed to test three research hypotheses related to the construction of a musician’s identity, social class and ecological systems of development. The MSBIQ is administered to the music students at Sibelius Academy of the University of Arts Helsinki and Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, representing the ’highbrow’ and the ’middlebrow’ samples in the field of music education in Finland. Acquired responses (N = 253) are analyzed and compared with quantitative methods including Pearson’s chi-square test, factor analysis and an adjusted analysis of variance (ANOVA). The study revealed that (1) the music students at Sibelius Academy and Metropolia construct their subjective musician’s identity differently, but (2) social class does not affect this identity construction process significantly. In turn, (3) the ecological systems of development, especially the individual’s residential location, do significantly affect the construction of a musician’s identity, as well as the age at which one starts to play one’s first musical instrument. Furthermore, a novel finding related to the structure of a musician’s identity was the tripartite model of musical identity consisting of the three dimensions of a musician’s identity: (I) ’the subjective dimension of a musician’s identity’, (II) ’the occupational dimension of a musician’s identity’ and, (III) ’the conservative-liberal dimension of a musician’s identity’. According to this finding, a musician’s identity is not a uniform, coherent entity, but a structure consisting of different elements continuously working in parallel within different dimensions. The results and limitations related to the study are discussed, as well as the objectives related to future studies using the MSBIQ to research the identity construction and social backgrounds of a musician or other performing artists.

Electrical keyboard instruments and computer-aided music-making generally base on the piano keyboard that was developed for a tuning system no longer used. Alternative keyboard layout offers at least easier playing, faster adopting, new ways to play and better ergonomics. This thesis explores the development of keyboard instruments and tunings, and different keyboard layouts. This work is preliminary research for an electrical keyboard instrument to be implemented later on.

Model-View-Controller architectural pattern and its evolution in graphical user interface frameworks

Model-View-Controller (MVC) is an architectural pattern used in software development for graphical user interfaces. It was one of the first proposed solutions in the late 1970s to the Smart UI anti-pattern, which refers to the act of writing all domain logic into a user interface. The original MVC pattern has since evolved in multiple directions, with various names and may confuse many. The goal of this thesis is to present the origin of the MVC pattern and how it has changed over time. Software architecture in general and the MVC’s evolution within web applications are not the primary focus. Fundamen- tal designs are abstracted, and then used to examine the more recent versions. Prob- lems with the subject and its terminology are also presented.

Whether digital book will become the dominant design of books and be a widely accepted format for reading is a question that is currently asked by every e-publisher, publishing industry worker and many book consumers. This study is the first to holistically approach Christensen’s disruptive innovation theory for an instrument of measuring the phenomenon of the digital book. The disruptiveness of an innovation could be measured by it’s disruptive potential and the disruption process it passes. The empirical part of the thesis is designed so to investigate the digital book‘s features as an innovation for disruptive potential and then the current digital book market, monitoring it for disruption processes. Proving that the digital book is a disruptive innovation may allow understanding it’s prospects and even help in making a pattern of the innovation’s market infiltration in the future. The framework created for answering the research question could also be used in a similar way to analyze other E-publishing products (e.g. e-newspapers, emagazines).

Commercially available haptic interfaces are usable for many purposes. However, as generic devices they are not the most suitable for the control of heavy duty mobile working machines like mining machines, container handling equipment and excavators. Alternative mechanical constructions for a haptic controller are presented and analysed. A virtual reality environment (VRE) was built to test the proposed haptic controller mechanisms. Verification of an electric motor emulating a hydraulic pump in the electro-hydraulic system of a mobile working machine is carried out. A real-time simulator using multi-body-dynamics based software with hardware-in-loop (HIL) setup was used for the tests. Recommendations for further development of a haptic controller and emulator electric motor are given.

Avhandlingens syfte är att ta reda på hur en digital lärmiljö kan fungera som ett didaktiskt komplement vid undervisning av ett instrument under skolans musiklektioner. Genom att observera den egna undervisningen i musik i en skolklass där en digital lärmiljö använts har jag lyft fram iakttagelser av händelser som anses kritiska för utvärderingen av lärmiljön. Undersökningen är av kvalitativ karaktär där aktionsforskning legat som ansats för avhandlingen. Aktionsforskning bygger på att finna ett fokusområde för undersökning, varefter en fråga eller problemformulering utarbetas. Frågan prövas i praktiken och efter det följer en utvärdering och reflektion kring kritiska händelser som observerats i praktiken. En skolklass bestående av elever i årskurserna 3 och 4 har fungerat som respondenter för undersökningen. En del av eleverna i klassen har arbetat individuellt och försökt lära sig spela gitarr och elbas med hjälp av en digital lärmiljö som jag kallar för Musikskolan.fi. Genom att pröva och utvärdera lärmiljön under tre lektioner med eleverna har styrkor, svagheter och differentiering i användandet av Musikskolan.fi diskuterats. För att dokumentera lektionerna har videokamera använts som komplement till forskarens personliga observationer. Enligt de tolkningar och observationer som framkommit i denna undersökning kan Musikskolan.fi fungera bra som stöd och komplement till musikundervisningen, trots att en del förbättringsförslag angående interaktivitet och differentiering noterats. Lärmiljöns styrkor ligger i att elever kan arbeta individuellt med läromedlet och ett instrument. Dessutom kan läraren använda sig av verktyget för att ackompanjera eleverna i sång och spel. En av nackdelarna är att det krävs en hel del förkunskaper om musikteori och visuell tolkningsförmåga av eleven för att han eller hon ska kunna utnyttja verktyget till dess fulla potential. Genom tillägg av fler funktioner, som möjligheten att justera tempo på musiken som verktyget spelar upp, kunde lärmiljön bättre stöda elevers skillnader i färdigheter och bidra positivt till differentiering av musikundervisningen.

SD card (Secure Digital Memory Card) is widely used in portable storage medium. Currently, latest researches on SD card, are mainly SD card controller based on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). Most of them are relying on API interface (Application Programming Interface), AHB bus (Advanced High performance Bus), etc. They are dedicated to the realization of ultra high speed communication between SD card and upper systems. Studies about SD card controller, really play a vital role in the field of high speed cameras and other sub-areas of expertise. This design of FPGA-based file systems and SD2.0 IP (Intellectual Property core) does not only exhibit a nice transmission rate, but also achieve the systematic management of files, while retaining a strong portability and practicality. The file system design and implementation on a SD card covers the main three IP innovation points. First, the combination and integration of file system and SD card controller, makes the overall system highly integrated and practical. The popular SD2.0 protocol is implemented for communication channels. Pure digital logic design based on VHDL (Very-High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language), integrates the SD card controller in hardware layer and the FAT32 file system for the entire system. Secondly, the document management system mechanism makes document processing more convenient and easy. Especially for small files in batch processing, it can ease the pressure of upper system to frequently access and process them, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of systems. Finally, digital design ensures the superior performance. For transmission security, CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) algorithm is for data transmission protection. Design of each module is platform-independent of macro cells, and keeps a better portability. Custom integrated instructions and interfaces may facilitate easily to use. Finally, the actual test went through multi-platform method, Xilinx and Altera FPGA developing platforms. The timing simulation and debugging of each module was covered. Finally, Test results show that the designed FPGA-based file system IP on SD card can support SD card, TF card and Micro SD with 2.0 protocols, and the successful implementation of systematic management for stored files, and supports SD bus mode. Data read and write rates in Kingston class10 card is approximately 24.27MB/s and 16.94MB/s.
