The design and implementation of a standards-based mobile messaging platform - case WAP Push Proxy Gateway

Tässä diplomityössä perehdytään WAP:in Push -viitekehykseen. WAP-standardit määrittelevät kuinka Internet-tyyppisiä palveluita, joita voidaan käyttää erilaisia mobiileja päätelaiteitteita käyttäen, toteutetaan tehokkaalla ja verkkoteknologiasta riippumattomalla tavalla. WAP pohjautuu Internet:iin, mutta huomioi pienten päätelaitteiden ja mobiiliverkkojen rajoitukset ja erikoisominaisuudet. WAP Push viitekehys määrittelee verkon aloittaman palvelusisällön toimittamisen. Työn teoriaosassa käydään läpi yleinen WAP-arkkitehtuuri ja WAP-protokollapino käyttäen vertailukohtina lanka-Internetin arkkitehtuuria ja protokollapinoa. Edellistä perustana käyttäen tutustaan WAP Push -viitekehykseen. Käytännönosassa kuvataan WAP Push -välityspalvelimen suunnittelu ja kehitystyö. WAP Push -välityspalvelin on keskeinen verkkoelementti WAP Push -viitekehyksessä. WAP Push -välityspalvelin yhdistää Internetin ja mobiiliverkon tavalla, joka piilottaa teknologiaeroavaisuudet Internetissä olevalta palveluntuottajalta.

Implementing telephony signalling over IP networks using SIGTRAN standards

Diplomityössä tutkitaan yhteiskanavamerkinantoverkon signalointiliikenteen siirtoa IP-pohjaisiin verkkoihin käyttäen IETF:n aliorganisaation, SIGTRAN:in, määrittelemiä standardeja. Tutkimuksen lisäksi työssä suoritetaan myös toteutus, joka mahdollistaa em. verkkojen yhdistymisen. Ensin työssä käsitellään yhteiskanavamerkinantoverkon tulevaisuus ja alan yleiset näkymät, jotka luovat pohjan työn toteutuksen ymmärtämiseen. Toiseksi työssä esitellään toteutuksessa käytetyt teknologiat. Esiteltäviin teknologioihin kuuluvat yhteiskanavamerkinantoverkko, IP-pohjainen verkko, SIGTRAN:in määrittelemät standardit, toteutustyökalut sekä ympäristö, johon toteutus liitetään. Toteutukseen olennaisesti liittyvät asiat ovat painotettuina teknologioiden esittelyssä. Diplomityön loppuosassa kuvataan merkinantoyhdyskäytävän toteutus suunnittelun ja toteutettujen toiminnallisuuksien osalta. Diplomityön tuloksena saatiin uusi testattu merkinantosovellus, joka täyttää yhteiskanavamerkinantoverkolle asetetut vaatimukset. Toteutus toimii osana Intellitel(TM) ONE palvelualustaa. Toteutuksen kehitys tulee jatkumaan.

International Accounting Standards –normistoon siirtymisen vaikutukset suomalaisten pörssiyritysten taloushallintoon ja tilinpäätökseen

Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena oli selvittää, mitä vaikutuksia IAS-tilinpäätösstandardien käyttöön siirtyminen aiheuttaa suomalaisten pörssiyritysten tilinpäätöksissä ja taloushallinnossa. Tähän tavoitteeseen edettiin alatavoitteiden avulla. Näitä olivat tilinpäätösten kansainvälisen harmonisoinnin, Euroopan Unionin IAS-asetuksen ja itse IAS-tilinpäätöksen selvittäminen. Tutkimusaineisto koostuu kirjallisuudesta ja suomalaisille pörssiyrityksille tehdystä kyselystä. Tutkimuksen teoriaosassa käytetään käsiteanalyyttista ja empiirisessä osassa nomoteettista tutkimusotetta. Tutkielman mukaan tiedon lisääntyminen lisää myönteisyyttä IAS-standardistoa kohtaan. Henkilöstön koulutus onkin avainasemassa siirtymäprojektissa. Toinen merkittävä vaikutus on uuden laskentaohjeistuksen luontitarve. Merkittävin standardi vaikutuksiltaan on IAS 14 Segmenttiraportointi.

The rise and fall of evaluation standards

Abstract

Quality standards in e-business software development

Large enterprises have for many years employed eBusiness solutions in order to improve their efficiency. Smaller companies, however, have not been able to leverage these technologies due to the high level of know-how and resources required in implementing them. To solve this, novel software services are being developed to facilitate eBusiness adoption for the small enterprise with the aim of making B2Bi feasible not only between large organisations but also between trading partners of all sizes. The objective of this study was to find what standards and techniques on eBusiness and software testing and quality assurance fit best for building these new kinds of software considering the requirements their unique eBusiness approach poses. The research was conducted as a literature study with focus on standards on software testing and quality assurance together with standards on eBusiness. The study showed that the current software testing and quality assurance standards do not possess such characteristics as would make select standards evidently better fitted for building this type of software, which were established to be best developed as web services in order for them to meet their requirements. A selection of eBusiness standards and technologies was proposed to support this approach. The main finding in the study was, however, that these kinds of web services that have high interoperability requirements will have to be able to carry out automated interoperability and conformance testing as part of their operation; this objective dictates how the software are built and how testing during software development is to be done. The study showed that research on automated interoperability and conformance testing for web services is still limited and more research is needed to make the building of highly-interoperable web services more feasible.

Compliance of crane electrics with electrical safety standards and codes

Master’s thesis focuses on the questions of crane electrics compliance with electrical safety standards. Overview and short comparison of the world’s effective standards in the field is made in order to understand their demands. Basic concepts of a proper electrical circuit design are presented. Characteristics, construction and operation principles of overcurrent protective devices are studied in details. Electrics of the basic crane is designed according to the assumed customer’s demands, compliance with the requirements of the standards is checked. Solutions to achieve better compliance in some issues are proposed. Accent is made on the National Electrical Code (NEC) and standards by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) latests demands. Requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) are also taken into account.

CSR standards and financial performance in forest industry - Empirical analysis

The definition of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been developed since 1950s but even today there is no consensus what CSR includes. The main purpose of this thesis was to find out whether financial performance is better among first adopters of CSR standards in forest industry. To support the main purpose it was critical also investigate what kind of companies adopt CSR standards. The empirical part of the thesis based on a survey which was done in 2010 to forest industry companies and financial data that was gathered from different databases from years 2003-2010. According to the research results it seems the early CSR standards adopters benefits the position of the first adopter many times. Especially cash position and solvency of early adopter companies were better than later adopters or those who did not adopt CSR standards at all. Profitability seemed to be better among CSR standards adopters but early adopters did not have significantly better position compared to later adopters. CSR standards adopters were companies that considered themselves as environmental performance pioneers and had employee oriented management.

Virtual Testing of Active Magnetic Bearing Systems based on Design Guidelines given by the Standards

Active Magnetic Bearings offer many advantages that have brought new applications to the industry. However, similarly to all new technology, active magnetic bearings also have downsides and one of those is the low standardization level. This thesis is studying mainly the ISO 14839 standard and more specifically the system verification methods. These verifying methods are conducted using a practical test with an existing active magnetic bearing system. The system is simulated with Matlab using rotor-bearing dynamics toolbox, but this study does not include the exact simulation code or a direct algebra calculation. However, this study provides the proof that standardized simulation methods can be applied in practical problems.
