Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on operationalisoida T&K- yhteistyön prosessimaista luonnetta, eli tarkemmin sanottuna analysoida T&K-yhteistyösuhteidenmuodostumista ja motiiveja. Tutkielman hypoteesit muodostettiin analysoimalla yrityksen teknologiastrategiaan perustuvia uuden tiedon tuonnin ja olemassa olevan tiedon hyväksikäytön oppimistavoitteita. Motivaatio T&K- yhteistyölle syntyy mahdollisuudesta T&K- projektien riskien jakamiseen. Hypoteeseja testattiin 276 suomalaisen teollisuusyrityksen otoksella. Otoksen yrityksillä oliollut T&K- toimintaa. Otos perustuu kyselyyn, joka toteutettiin Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston kauppatieteiden osastolla vuonna 2004. Hypoteeseja testattiin tilastollisilla menetelmillä; lineaarisella regressioanalyysillä, parillisten ja riippumattomien otosten t-testeillä. Validiteetti- ja multikollineaarisuusongelman todennäköisyydet on huomioitu. Hypoteesit vahvistuivat osittain. Teknologisella epävarmuudella on osittainen vaikutus teknologiastrategian valintaan. Teknologiaintensiivisyyteen perustuvien erot perustuvat teknologisen tiedon luonteeseen toimialalla. Transaktiokustannusteorian mukainenkustannusten minimointi ja kompetenssiperusteisten teorioiden mukainen strategisointi selittävät komplementaarisesti T&K-yhteistyösuhteiden muodostumista ja yrityksen rajojen määräytymistä.

The main aim of this thesis was to find out what kinds of risks arise from collabo-ration in R&D between small and large firms. The suitability and gain of some buyer/supplier risk frameworks in examining of R&D collaboration has been in-vestigated. A risk model has been based on the buyer/supplier risks models found in the literature. Its applicability has been tested empirically by means of theme interviews with firm representatives. The risk classification framework received some confirmation. But the study also showed that the theoretical framework was not completely adequate, as a new risk class arose from communication. Collaboration causes risks, and these risks should be taken into account when R&D collaboration is planned. The advantage of risk examination is the possibility to decrease failures and losses, and to in-crease possibilities for success and economical benefits. This study should be used as a managerial analysis tool in trying to understand the form and concept of risk in risk expectancy.

Riskien tunnistaminen on riskienhallintaprosessin tärkein vaihe.

Aikakausista, jolloin tuotteita kehitettiin yrityksen omista lähtökohdista, kuten valmistuksellisista eduista, on edetty tilanteeseen, jossa markkinoiden tarpeita tulee ottaa yhä enemmän huomioon. Kuitenkin, teollisuudessa esitellään tuotteita yhä puhtaasti tuotantolähtöisesti, ja tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää taloudellisia riskejä, joita liittyy puhtaasti teknologiavetoiseen tuotteiden kehitystyöhön, valmistukseen ja lanseeraukseen. Normatiivisena tutkimuksena työ pyrkii asiakastarpeita ja teollisuusyrityksen loppuasiakkaiden näkökulmia huomioon ottaen osoittamaan markkinoinnin keinojen merkityksen tuotantolähtöisen tuotelanseerauksen taloudellisten riskien minimoimiseksi. Uuden teollisen tuotteen asiakastarpeita on selvitetty kyselymuotoisen markkinointitutkimuksen menetelmiä hyväksikäyttäen. Tuotteen tärkeimpien ominaisuuksien, kuten turvallisuuden, kestävyyden ja hinnan merkitystä voidaan hyödyntää ennen tuotteen kaupallista esittelyä potentiaalisten asiakassegmenttien kartoitukseen ja menestyksellisen lanseerauksen edesauttamiseksi.

Master’s Thesis concentrates to means and challenges in international operations for a Finnish mobile application provider Small Planet Oy during its various company stages from founding till maturing and during macro economical phases between year 1998 and 2008. Small Planet has just celebrated its 10 year anniversary and is therefore quite an extraordinary company which has survived all the highs and lows during past ten years and which has operated in the market as long as the whole mobile application industry has existed. Master’s Thesis describes possibilities for a company’s internationalization with different entry modes like exporting, licensing, investment entry and co-operative operations which are suitable for a mobile application provider. Unsuitable entry modes like franchising or contract manufacturing are not explained. The goal has been to analyze Small Planet’s international operations and to make conclusions from the practical experiences. Analysis and conclusions shall help Small Planet in its international operations in the future and should give insight to other mobile application companies and their managers who are in the situation of planning their own international operations. Results show that the best ways for Small Planet to internationalize its operations has been the co-operation with a big domestic client and the co-operation with Finnish operator infrastructure providers which have complementary products with Small Planet. Through these co-operations Small Planet has got lot of new international clients. Same time financial risks and investment need for international operations have been low. Co-operative international sales can be the most efficient international entry mode for a mobile application provider.

Deregulation of the electricity sector liberated the electricity sale and production for competitive forces while in the network business, electricity transmission and distribution, natural monopoly positions were recognised. Deregulation was accompanied by efficiencyoriented thinking on the whole electricity supply industry. For electricity distribution this meant a transition from a public service towards profit-driven business guided by economic regulation. Regulation is the primary means to enforce societal and other goals in the regulated monopoly sector. The design of economic regulation is concerned with two main attributes; end-customer price and quality of electricity distribution services. Regulation limits the costs of the regulated company but also defines the desired quality of monopoly services. The characteristics of the regulatory framework and the incentives it provides are therefore decisive for the electricity distribution sector. Regulation is not a static factor; changes in the regulatory practices cause discontinuity points, which in turn generate risks. A variety of social and environmental concerns together with technological advancements have emphasised the relevance of quality regulation, which is expected to lead to the large-scale replacement of overhead lines with underground cables. The electricity network construction activity is therefore currently witnessing revolutionary changes in its competitive landscape. In a business characterised by high statutory involvement and a high level of sunk costs, recognising and understanding the regulatory risks becomes a key success factor. As a response, electricity distribution companies have turned into outsourcing to attain efficiency and quality goals. This doctoral thesis addresses the impacts of regulatory risks on electricity network construction, which is a commonly outsourced activity in the electricity distribution network sector. The chosen research approach is characterised as an action analytical research on account of the fact that regulatory risks are greatly dependent on the individual nature of the regulatory regime applied in the electricity distribution sector. The main contribution of this doctoral thesis is to develop a concept for recognising and managing the business risks stemming from economic regulation. The degree of outsourcing in the sector is expected to increase in years to come. The results of the research provide new knowledge to manage the regulatory risks when outsourcing services.

Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of Russia's economic environment changes in the total return indexes of Finnish companies. The research data consisted of Finnish publicly listed companies, which have made physical investments to Russia, and operating in the area. The study used six different variables to model the Russian operating environment. The data consists of total return indexes of Finnish companies. From those we calculated the monthly mean interval between timeline of 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2009. Sample period is divided into two different parts. Variables impact on companies' total return indices is tested by regression analysis. By F-test we tested significance of model and squared coefficient correlation told us how much model explains from changes. Goodness of the β-coefficient is tested in the model by t-test. The research results shows that the Russian operating environment, or changes in which the active Finnish companies in total return indices. On partial sample periods results were not so significant.

The most important knowledge in firms is mostly tacit and embedded in individuals within the organization. This background knowledge that firms possess is used for creation of new knowledge and innovations. As firms today greatly concentrate on their core competencies, they need external knowledge from various collaboration partners. Thus, collaborative relationship governance, as well as control (use of appropriability mechanisms) over background (the input from each firm in innovative activities) and foreground knowledge (the output of collaboration activities) is needed in order to successfully create and capture value from innovative activities without losing core knowledge and competitiveness. Even though research has concentrated on knowledge protection and knowledge sharing, studies that combine both of these views and examine the effects of sharing and protection on value creation and capture have been rather limited. Studies have mainly focused on the protection of the output of innovation while forgetting the protection of the input of innovation. On the other hand, as the research concentrating on the output of innovation tends to favor formal mechanisms, informal mechanisms have remained more unknown to researchers as well as managers. This research aims to combine the perspectives of knowledge sharing and knowledge protection and their relationship with value creation and value capture. The sharing and protection are viewed from two points of view: the use of appropriability mechanisms, as well as governance of the collaborative relationship. The study consists of two parts. The first part introduces the research topic and discusses the overall results. The second part comprises six complementary research publications. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are used in the study. In terms of results, the findings enhance understanding of the combined use of formal and informal mechanisms for knowledge protection and sharing. Informal mechanisms appear to be emphasized in the protection of background knowledge, and thus are prerequisites for innovation, whereas formal mechanisms are relied on more for protecting the results of innovative activities. However, the simultaneous use of the formal and informal mechanisms that are relevant to the particular industry and innovation context is recommendedthroughout the collaborative innovation process. Further, the study adds to the current knowledge on HRM as an appropriability mechanism: on the firm level its uses include assessing and hedging against employee-related risks such as knowledge leaking and knowledge leaving. A further contribution is to the research on HRM protection and its interrelations with other appropriability mechanisms, its constituents, and its potential use in the area of knowledge protection.
