In this doctoral thesis, a power conversion unit for a 10 kWsolid oxide fuel cell is modeled, and a suitable control system is designed. The need for research was identified based on an observation that there was no information available about the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell from the perspective of power electronics and the control system, and suitable control methods had not previously been studied in the literature. In addition, because of the digital implementation of the control system, the inherent characteristics of the digital system had to be taken into account in the characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The characteristics of the solid oxide fuel cell as well the methods for the modeling and control of the DC/DC converter and the grid converter are studied by a literature survey. Based on the survey, the characteristics of the SOFC as an electrical power source are identified, and a solution to the interfacing of the SOFC in distributed generation is proposed. A mathematical model of the power conversion unit is provided, and the control design for the DC/DC converter and the grid converter is made based on the proposed interfacing solution. The limit cycling phenomenon is identified as a source of low-frequency current ripple, which is found to be insignificant when connected to a grid-tied converter. A method to mitigate a second harmonic originating from the grid interface is proposed, and practical considerations of the operation with the solid oxide fuel cell plant are presented. At the theoretical level, the thesis discusses and summarizes the methods to successfully derive a model for a DC/DC converter, a grid converter, and a power conversion unit. The results of this doctoral thesis can also be used in other applications, and the models and methods can be adopted to similar applications such as photovoltaic systems. When comparing the results with the objectives of the doctoral thesis, we may conclude that the objectives set for the work are met. In this doctoral thesis, theoretical and practical guidelines are presented for the successful control design to connect a SOFC-based distributed generation plant to the utility grid.

Työssä tutkittiin tarrapaperikoneen pohjapaperin täyteainepitoisuuden nostamisen vaikutusta koneen ajettavuuteen ja paperin ominaisuuksiin. Työn tavoitteena oli löytää ne prosessitekniset keinot, joilla voitaisiin saavuttaa raskaiden pintapapereiden tavoitetuhkatasot. Lisäksi pyrittiin optimoimaan retentioaineiden annokset ja ajotavat korkeilla tuhkatasoilla. Kirjallisuusosassa tarkasteltiin pinta- ja kolloidikemian perusteita sekä täyteainepitoisuuden vaikutusta paperin ominaisuuksiin ja prosessoitavuuteen. Lisäk-si syvennyttiin märänpään kemiaan selvittämällä mm. kalsiumkarbonaatin vesiliuoskemiaa ja erilaisten retentioaineiden ominaisuuksia ja niiden reaktiomekanismeja. Työn kokeellinen osa koostui kahdesta koeajosta. Ensimmäisessä koeajossa selvitettiin täyteainesaostumien muodostumismekanismeja ja paperikoneen ajettavuutta täyteainepitoisuutta nostettaessa yli raskaiden pintapapereiden tavoitetasojen. Saadut tulokset osoittivat, että märänpään kemiantila pysyi koeajon aikana muuttumattomana eikä mitään saostumien muodostumista havaittu. Täyteainepitoisuudessa päästiin 3 % yli lajikohtaisen tuhkatavoitteen ilman ajettavuusongelmia. Toisessa koeajossa keskityttiin erityisesti märänpään retentioaineiden määrien optimointiin ja paperin laatuominaisuuksiin. Koeajossa täyteainepitoisuutta nostettiin yli tavoitetasojen. Saadut tulokset osoittivat, että täyteainepitoisuuden nostolla ei ollut vaikutusta paperin laatuun tai paperikoneen ajettavuuteen. Massatärkkelyksen avulla pystyttiin korvaamaan kationisen polymeerin retentiovaste ja kompensoimaan täyteainepitoisuuden noston myötä tullut paperin lujuuksien lasku. Koeajoissa ja prosessin seurannassa tuli ilmi myös useita eri tekijöitä, joilla oli vaikutusta retentioon, retentioaineiden tehoon ja prosessin stabiilisuuteen. Tehdyistä yksittäisistä havainnoista on hyötyä pyrittäessä ymmärtämään märänpään prosessin tilaa ja sen vaikutusta paperikoneen ajettavuuteen. Työ saavutti sille asetetut tavoitteet ja sen ansiosta paperikoneen märänpään raaka-aineiden ja kemikaalien syöttösuhteita pystyttiin muuttamaan tavalla, joka vähensi paperinvalmistuksen kustannuksia ilman että paperin laatuominaisuudet huononivat.

Loimaan seudun liikenneturvallisuussuunnitelma on laadittu seudun kuntien ja Varsinais-Suomen ELY-keskuksen yhteistyönä. Liikenneturvallisuussuunnitelman tavoitteena on edistää kokonaisvaltaisella tavalla nykyistä vastuullisempaa ja turvallisuushakuisempaa liikkumista seudulla. Suunnitelmassa esitetyillä toimenpiteillä pyritään merkittävästi vähentämään seudulla tapahtuvien liikennekuolemien ja liikenteessä loukkaantuneiden määrää. Tavoitteena on myös edistää nykyistä kestävämpää liikkumista, jolla terveys- ja ympäristövaikutusten ohella on myönteinen vaikutus myös liikenneturvallisuuskehitykseen. Loimaan seudulla tapahtuu vuosittain keskimäärin viisi kuolemaan ja 70 loukkaantumiseen johtanutta onnettomuutta. Asukaslukuun suhteutettuna Loimaan seudulla tapahtuu selvästi enemmän henkilövahinko-onnettomuuksia kuin maakunnassa tai koko maassa keskimäärin. Myös liikenneonnettomuuksien vakavuusaste on maakunnan ja koko maan keskitasoa korkeampi. Kulkutavoittain tarkasteltuna korostuvat erityisesti henkilöauto-onnettomuudet. Liikennekuolemista peräti kolme neljäsosaa on tapahtunut autoilijoille. Ikäryhmittäin tarkasteltuna suurin onnettomuusriski on 15–24-vuotiailla, jotka muodostavat seudun liikenteen uhreista 39 prosenttia (ikäryhmän osuus seudun väestöstä on 11 prosenttia). Liikenneonnettomuuksista aiheutuu seudun kunnille vuosittain lähes kahdeksan miljoonan euron kustannukset – yli 200 euroa asukasta kohden. Nykytilan kuvausten pohjalta ja valtakunnalliset linjaukset huomioiden seudun liikenneturvallisuustyölle on asetettu pitkän aikavälin visio, määrälliset liikenneonnettomuuksien vähentämistavoitteet sekä lähivuosien toimintaa suuntaavat kärkitehtävät. Tavoitteiden mukaan seudun liikennekuolemien määrän tulee vähentyä nykyisestä viidestä hengestä1-2 henkeen vuoteen 2020 mennessä. Loukkaantumisten määrän tulee vähentyä nykyisestä 95 henkilöstä vähintään 71 henkilöön vuoteen 2020 mennessä (-25 %). Suunnitelmassa asetettujen tavoitteiden saavuttamiseen pyritään monipuolisen ja toimien vaikuttavuuden perusteella kohdennetun toimenpidejoukon keinoin sekä kehittämällä eri toimijoiden välistä yhteistyötä ja työnjakoa toimenpiteiden edistämisessä. Suunnitelmassa on esitetty 14 kärkitehtäväkokonaisuutta, joihin toiminta tulee vaikuttavuuden perusteella ensisijaisesti kohdistaa. Suunnitelman vaikutustenarvioinnin perusteella voidaan todeta, että keinot asetettujen tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi ovat olemassa, mutta tavoitteisiin pääseminen edellyttää erittäin suuria panostuksia kaikilla liikenneturvallisuustyön osa-alueilla, ja erityisesti liikennekäyttäytymiseen ja yhteistyöhön kohdistuvien toimenpiteiden osalta. Liikennekuolemien puolittamisen tavoite nykytasosta vuoteen 2020 on tehtyjen tarkastelujen perusteella mahdollista. Myös loukkaantumisten määrän vähentäminen on saavutettavissa esitetyin toimenpitein.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää miksi uudisrakennushankkeeseen ryhtyvän kannattaa huomioida kestävän rakentamisen vaatimukset ja miten asetettuja kestävän ra-kentamisen tavoitteita voidaan hallita rakennusprojektin aikana. Perinteisesti rakennussektorilla on keskitytty tilaajan tavoitteiden saavuttamiseen kustan-nustehokkaasti ja aikataulussa. Kestävän kehityksen ja vastuullisuuden näkökulmat ovat kuitenkin vahvistuneet viime aikoina. Kestävän rakentamisen hallinta vaatii vielä uusia toimintatapoja ja -malleja, jotta voidaan varmistaa kestävän kehityksen kriteerien mukai-suus läpi hankkeen ja valmiissa rakennuksessa. Ympäristöluokitusjärjestelmien avulla voidaan asettaa kestävän rakentamisen tavoitteita, joita seurataan läpi hankkeen. Diplomityössä selvitetään yksityiskohtaisemmin BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method)-ympäristöluokitusjärjestelmän käyttämistä kestävän rakentamisen ohjaamisessa. Työssä selvitetään myös miten rakennusten tietomallinnusta voidaan käyttää tukemaan kestävän rakentamisen uudisrakennushanketta. Työ toteutetaan kirjalli-suustutkimuksen, asiantuntijahaastatteluiden ja ympäristöluokitusta hakeneesta esimerkki-kohteesta saatujen tietojen avulla. Diplomityön tuloksena muodostettiin toimintamalli varmistamaan halutun kestävän kehi-tyksen tason saavuttaminen uudisrakennusprojektissa. Toimintamallissa on jaettu vastuut ja tehtävät eri osapuolille koko projektin ajalle tarveselvityksestä käytönaikaan.

Potilaan hoitamisessa korostuvat mm. triagen tekeminen, potilaan voinnin seuranta ja hoitoa koskevien päätösten tekeminen nopeasti potilaan voinnin mukaan sekä potilaan jatkohoidon turvaaminen. Tämä kaksivaiheinen koulutustutkimus kohdistui päivystyshoitotyön osaamiseen. Tutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa määriteltiin päivystyshoitotyön osaaminen ja toisessa vaiheessa arvioitiin valmistuvien sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden päivystyshoitotyön osaamista ja osaamiseen yhteydessä olevia tekijöitä. Osaamisen arvioinnin suorittivat opiskelijat itse ja vertailuperustana opiskelijoiden päivystyshoitotyön osaamiselle käytettiin ammatissa toimivien sairaanhoitajien päivystyshoitotyön osaamista. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli arvioinnin perusteella määrittää päivystyshoitotyön osaamisen nykytaso ja tehdä tarvittavat ehdotukset päivystyshoitotyön osaamisen kehittämiseen. Tutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa (2006–2012) tiedonkeruumenetelminä oli kirjallisuuskatsaus ja asiantuntija-arviointi hyödyntäen delphi-menetelmää. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella muodostettiin päivystyshoitotyön osaamista kuvaavat pääkategoriat, yläkategoriat ja alakategoriat.Alakategoriat (n=61) annettiin asiantuntijoille (sairaanhoitajat, opettajat, ylihoitajat) arvioitavaksi.Kaksivaiheisen asiantuntija-arvioinnin perusteella muodostui 92 päivystyshoitotyön osaamista kuvaavaa alakategoriaa. Tutkimuksen toisessa vaiheessa (2007–2012) valmistuvien suomalaisten sairaanhoitaja-opiskelijoiden (N=382, n=208, vastausprosentti 55 %) päivystyshoitotyön osaamista arvioitiin tätä tutkimusta varten kehitetyllä mittarilla (Päivystyshoitotyön osaaminen -mittari). Mittari perustui tutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa muodostettuun määrittelyyn päivystyshoitotyön osaamisesta. Osaamista mitattiin VAS-janalla (asteikko 0–100) arvon 100 ollessa optimaalinen taso, johon pyrittiin. Sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden tavoiteltavaksi osaamisen tasoksi asetettiin 80 olettaen opiskelijoiden osaamisen vielä kehittyvän työkokemuksen myötä. Ammatissa toimivien sairaanhoitajien (N=586, n=280, vastausprosentti 48 %) itsearvioitua osaamista käytettiin vertailuperustana opiskelijoiden osaamiselle. Aineisto analysoitiin tilastollisin menetelmin. Valmistuvien sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden itsearvioitu päivystyshoitotyön osaaminen oli alle tavoiteltavan osaamisen tason. Opiskelijoilla oli mielestään eniten eettistä osaamista sekä vuorovaikutus- ja yhteistyöosaamista ja vähiten päätöksenteko-osaamista ja kliinistä osaamista. Myös ammatissa toimivilla sairaanhoitajilla oli mielestään eniten vuorovaikutus- ja yhteistyöosaamista. Vähiten heillä oli ohjausosaamista ja päätöksenteko-osaamista. Sairaanhoitajilla oli tilastollisesti merkitsevästi enemmän päivystyshoitotyön osaamista kuin opiskelijoilla. Opiskelijoiden päivystyshoitotyön osaamista selitti eniten aikaisempi terveysalan tutkinto. Päivystyshoitotyön osaamisen kehittämisehdotukset kohdistuvat ammatillisen peruskoulutuksen ja täydennyskoulutuksen opetuksen sisältöihin ja määrään, opetus- ja opiskelumenetelmiin, osaamisen arviointiin sekä urasuunnitteluun. Jatkotutkimusehdotukset kohdistuvat päivystyshoitotyön osaamisen määrittelyn ja osaamista arvioivan mittarin edelleen kehittämiseen, erilaisten arviointimenetelmien kehittämiseen sekä osaamiseen yhteydessä olevien tekijöiden edelleen tutkimiseen.

This thesis investigates the influence of a firm’s mindset on international success in the context of the Finnish marine industry. The study draws theoretical wisdom from organisational behaviour and strategic management literatures. The research aim set for this study was to identify and categorise existing strategic types based on mindsets found in the marine industry SMEs, and to link the influence of mindsets with success by examining the role of mindsets in a firm’s performance. Mindsets of firms were conceptualised as aggregate collections of perceptions that influence how the surrounding environment is discerned by the members of the firm. Mindsets are idiosyncratic to firms and therefore important firm-specific resources which influence decision-making and can be observed through the strategic behaviour of firms. Qualitative case study method was applied which was further supported by quantitative data on the financial performance of the ten case firms. Taxonomy based on the dimension of mindsets and prediction was developed to demonstrate four ideal types of firms identified within the marine industry. It was found that all of the case firms emphasised adaptation in their strategy while planning was emphasised to a varying degree. Moreover, two different methods of adapting were found; proactive and reactive. Firms which plan in the long-term and adapt proactively constantly investigate whether their plans are synchronous with the realities of the market; by having an open mindset, a firm’s perception of the reality of the market is enabling the firm to develop value creating strategies which are superiorly informed.This finding was supported by the financial data and led to the proposition that having an open mindset and placing a high level of emphasis on prediction may have a positive influence on international success. Also, it was proposed that concentrating only on exploiting business opportunities in the present time and not exploring any addition opportunities can have a negative influence on the firm’s performance, even if the mindset of the firm is open.
Käyttövesivaraajan ekosuunnitteluvaatimusten merkityksen arvioiminen rakennusten energianhallinnassa

Työn lähtökohtana ovat veden lämmittimiä koskeva ekosuunnittelulainsäädäntö ja sen vaatiman testausjärjestelmän laatiminen. Työn tavoitteena on arvioida ekosuunnittelulainsäädännön vaikutusta varaajan toimintaan osana rakennusten energianhallintaa. Työssä laaditaan käyttövesivaraajalle tuoteryhmäkohtaisen ekosuunnittelulainsäädännön mukainen mittausjärjestelmä energiatehokkuuden, lämpimän veden saannon, vuosittaisen sähkönkulutuksen sekä energiamerkinnän määrittämiseksi. Lisäksi tarkastellaan ekosuunnittelulainsäädännön tarkoituksenmukaisuutta, selvitetään varaajan toimintaperiaatteet sekä keinoja käyttöveden tarvitseman energian vähentämiseksi. Testattu käyttövesivaraaja täyttää ekosuunnitteluvaatimukset. Lämmitysenergian vähentäminen käyttövesivaraajan toimintaa tehostamalla on kuitenkin vaikeaa. Hybridijärjestelmien hyödyntäminen sähkölämmityksen ohella muita energianlähteitä ja esim. käyttöveden lämmöntalteenottoa käyttäen on toimivin keino vähentää käyttöveden energiankulutusta sekä parantaa varaajan energiatehokkuutta. Lämpimän käyttöveden energiankulutuksen osuus rakennuksen energiankulutuksesta kasvaa lainsäädännön pakottamana rakennusten kokonaisenergiankäytön vähentyessä. Ekosuunnittelulainsäädännön suora merkitys rakennusten energianhallintaan on Suomessa vähäistä nykyisen energiatehokkuustason ollessa suhteellisen korkea, jolloin käyttöveden tarvitseman energian vähentämiskeinoina on hyödynnettävä vaihtoehtoisia ratkaisuja.

The papermaking industry has been continuously developing intelligent solutions to characterize the raw materials it uses, to control the manufacturing process in a robust way, and to guarantee the desired quality of the end product. Based on the much improved imaging techniques and image-based analysis methods, it has become possible to look inside the manufacturing pipeline and propose more effective alternatives to human expertise. This study is focused on the development of image analyses methods for the pulping process of papermaking. Pulping starts with wood disintegration and forming the fiber suspension that is subsequently bleached, mixed with additives and chemicals, and finally dried and shipped to the papermaking mills. At each stage of the process it is important to analyze the properties of the raw material to guarantee the product quality. In order to evaluate properties of fibers, the main component of the pulp suspension, a framework for fiber characterization based on microscopic images is proposed in this thesis as the first contribution. The framework allows computation of fiber length and curl index correlating well with the ground truth values. The bubble detection method, the second contribution, was developed in order to estimate the gas volume at the delignification stage of the pulping process based on high-resolution in-line imaging. The gas volume was estimated accurately and the solution enabled just-in-time process termination whereas the accurate estimation of bubble size categories still remained challenging. As the third contribution of the study, optical flow computation was studied and the methods were successfully applied to pulp flow velocity estimation based on double-exposed images. Finally, a framework for classifying dirt particles in dried pulp sheets, including the semisynthetic ground truth generation, feature selection, and performance comparison of the state-of-the-art classification techniques, was proposed as the fourth contribution. The framework was successfully tested on the semisynthetic and real-world pulp sheet images. These four contributions assist in developing an integrated factory-level vision-based process control.

Today lean-philosophy has gathered a lot of popularity and interest in many industries. This customer-oriented philosophy helps to understand customer’s value creation which can be used to improve efficiency. A comprehensive study of lean and lean-methods in service industry were created in this research. In theoretical part lean-philosophy is studied in different levels which will help to understand its diversity. To support lean, this research also presents basic concepts of process management. Lastly theoretical part presents a development model to support process development in systematical way. The empirical part of the study was performed by performing experimental measurements during the service center’s product return process and by analyzing this data. Measurements were used to map out factors that have a negative influence on the process flow. Several development propositions were discussed to remove these factors. Problems mainly occur due to challenges in controlling customers and due to the lack of responsibility and continuous improvement on operational level. Development propositions concern such factors as change in service center’s physical environment, standardization of work tasks and training. These factors will remove waste in the product return process and support the idea of continuous improvement.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli yhtenäistää Etelä-Karjalan alueen erilaisia tapoja toimia alueke-räyksen suhteen. Aluekeräyksellä tarkoitetaan jätteiden keräystä pisteiltä, joihin kotitaloudet, jotka eivät kuulu kiinteistökohtaiseen keräykseen, voivat tuoda syntypaikkalajitellun kuiva- eli sekajätteensä. Tavoitteena oli myös saada tietoa siitä, minkälaiset ovat eri kuivajätehuoltovaihtoehtojen ilmastonmuutos- ja kustannusvaikutukset. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten ympäristönäkökohdat voidaan ottaa huomioon kuljetuskilpailutuksissa. Tutkimuksessa kerättiin tietoa internetistä, opinnäytetöistä ja tieteellisistä artikkeleista sekä yritysten edustajilta. Kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen laskennassa hyödynnettiin GaBi 6.0 -elinkaariarviointiohjelmaa. Tutkimuksen perusteella aluekeräyspisteet kannattaa sijoittaa reiteille, joita asukkaat käyttävät vähintään kerran viikossa ja mitkä ovat optimaalisesti myös kuljetusurakoitsijan kannalta. Taajama-alueelle ei nähty suositeltavaksi sijoittaa aluekeräyspisteitä. Suositeltavina astioina aluekeräyspisteille nähtiin syväkeräyssäiliöt, joiden tyhjennys onnistuu samalla keräyskalustolla kuin kiinteistöjen jäteastioiden, kun ajoneuvo on varustettu puominosturilla. Suositeltavaksi nähtiin myös harventaa jäteastioiden talvityhjennystiheyksiä, jos tyhjennystiheys on vakio ympäri vuoden, sillä pääosa aluekeräyspisteiden käyttäjistä on loma-asukkaita. Tyhjennystiheyksien harvennuksella olisi mahdollista saavuttaa kustannussäästöjä. Tutkimuksessa laskettiin kuivajätteen elinkaarenaikaisia kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä kuivajätteen keräyksestä loppusijoitukseen ja energiahyötykäyttöön. Energiahyötykäyttökohteiksi valittiin Riihimäen, Kotkan sekä Leppävirran (suunnitteilla) jätteenpolttolaitokset. Tulosten pohjalta kuivajätteen energiahyötykäyttö oli loppusijoitusta selkeästi parempi vaihtoehto. Kuivajätteen keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjen vaikutus oli pieni. Kuivajätteen kuljetusmatkan pituus jätteenpolttolaitokselle ei ole siis ratkaisevassa roolissa kokonaiskasvihuonekaasupäästöjä tarkasteltaessa. Etäisyyttä suurempi vaikutus onkin kuivajätteen koostumuksella, polttolaitosten vuosihyötysuhteilla ja korvattavilla polttoaineilla. Jatkossa suositellaan selvittämään vielä vaihtoehtoisia käsittelytapoja kuivajätteen sisältämälle sekamuovijakeelle, jonka poltosta aiheutuu merkittävä osuus (noin 74 %) kuivajätteen polton kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä. Ajankohtaisia kuljetuskilpailutuksia varten tarkasteltiin vielä tarkemmin keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjä. Tulosten pohjalta havaittiin, että keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjä on mahdollista vähentää reilusti (46–74 %) siirtymällä dieselistä biopolttoaineiden käyttöön. Tuloksiin vaikuttaa kuitenkin merkittävästi, minkälaisista raaka-aineista biopolttoaineet on valmistettu. Kuivajätteen keräyspäästöjä on mahdollista pienentää myös päivittämällä aluekeräyspisteverkostoa. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin kustannuksia aluekeräyspisteiden astioiden uusinnasta tai korjauksesta kuivajätteen loppusijoitukseen tai energiahyötykäyttöön asti. Merkittävimmät kustannukset aiheutuivat kuivajätteen loppusijoituksesta, energiahyötykäytöstä sekä keräyksestä. Kustannusten näkökulmasta keräyksen rooli oli siis suurempi. Työn lopussa annettiin vielä vinkkejä, joiden avulla jätehuoltoyritykset voivat tehdä jätekuljetushankintoja ympäristönäkökohdat huomioiden. Usein selkein tapa huomioida ympäristönäkökohdat kuljetuskilpailutuksissa on asettaa riittävän tiukkoja pakollisia vaatimuksia, jolloin voi valita hinnaltaan halvimman vaihtoehdon. Kuljetuspalvelun hankinnassa tulee huomioida ainakin energiankulutus, hiilidioksidi-, typenoksidi-, hiilivety- ja hiukkaspäästöt. Lainsäädäntö ei määrää vähimmäistasoja, vaan hankintaa tehdessä kannattaa kartoittaa markkinatilanne, jotta vaatimukset osaa asettaa oikealle tasolle. Markkinoille kannattaa myös tiedottaa tulevaisuuden tarpeista ja suunnitelmista. The starting point of this study is to direct more attention to the teacher and those entrepreneurship education practices taking place in formal school to find out solutions for more effective promotion of entrepreneurship education. For this objective, the strategy-level aims of entrepreneurship education need to be operationalised into measurable and understandable teacher-level practices. Furthermore, to enable the effective development of entrepreneurship education in basic and upper secondary level education, more knowledge is needed of the state of affairs of entrepreneurship education in teaching. The purpose of the study is to increase the level of understanding of teachers’ entrepreneurship education practices, and through this to develop entrepreneurship education. This study builds on the literature on entrepreneurship education and especially those elements referring to the aims, resources, benefits, methods, and practises of entrepreneurship education. The study comprises five articles highlighting teachers’ role in entrepreneurship education. In the first article the concept of entrepreneurship and the teachers role in reflection upon his/hers approaches to entrepreneurship education are considered. The second article provides a detailed analysis of the process of developing a measurement tool to depict the teachers’ activities in entrepreneurship education. The next three articles highlight the teachers’ role in directing the entrepreneurship education in basic and upper secondary level education. Furthermore, they analyse the relationship between the entrepreneurship education practises and the teachers’ background characteristics. The results of the study suggest a wide range of conclusions and implications. First, in spite of many outspoken aims connected to entrepreneurship education, teachers have not set any aims for themselves. Additionally, aims and results seem to mix. However, it is possible to develop teachers’ target orientation by supporting their reflection skills, and through measurement and evaluation increase their understanding of their own practices. Second, applying a participatory action process it is possible to operationalise teachers’entrepreneurship education practices. It is central to include the practitioners’ perspective in the development of measures to make sure that the concepts and aims of entrepreneurship education are understood. Third, teachers’ demographic or tenure-related background characteristics do not affect their entrepreneurship education practices, but their training related to entrepreneurship education, participation in different school-level or regional planning, and their own capabilities support entrepreneurship education. Fourth, a large number of methods are applied to entrepreneurship education, and the most often used methods were different kinds of discussions, which seem to be an easy, low-threshold way for teachers to include entrepreneurship education regularly in their teaching. Field trips to business enterprises or inviting entrepreneurs to present their work in schools are used fairly seldom. Interestingly, visits outside the school are more common than visitors invited to the school. In line, most of the entrepreneurship education practices take place in a classroom. Therefore it seems to be useful to create and encourage teachers towards more in-depth cooperation with companies (e.g. via joint projects) and to network systematically. Finally, there are plenty of resources available for entrepreneurship education, such as ready-made materials, external stakeholders, support organisations, and learning games, but teachers have utilized them only marginally.

A high-frequency cyclonverter acts as a direct ac-to-ac power converter circuit that does not require a diode bidge rectifier. Bridgeless topology makes it possible to remove forward voltage drop losses that are present in a diode bridge. In addition, the on-state losses can be reduced to 1.5 times the on-state resistance of switches in half-bridge operation of the cycloconverter. A high-frequency cycloconverter is reviewed and the charging effect of the dc-capacitors in ``back-to-back'' or synchronous mode operation operation is analyzed. In addition, a control method is introduced for regulating dc-voltage of the ac-side capacitors in synchronous operation mode. The controller regulates the dc-capacitors and prevents switches from reaching overvoltage level. This can be accomplished by variating phase-shift between the upper and the lower gate signals. By adding phase-shift between the gate signal pairs, the charge stored in the energy storage capacitors can be discharged through the resonant load and substantially, the output resonant current amplitude can be improved. The above goals are analyzed and illustrated with simulation. Theory is supported with practical measurements where the proposed control method is implemented in an FPGA device and tested with a high-frequency cycloconverter using super-junction power MOSFETs as switching devices.

Human activity recognition in everyday environments is a critical, but challenging task in Ambient Intelligence applications to achieve proper Ambient Assisted Living, and key challenges still remain to be dealt with to realize robust methods. One of the major limitations of the Ambient Intelligence systems today is the lack of semantic models of those activities on the environment, so that the system can recognize the speci c activity being performed by the user(s) and act accordingly. In this context, this thesis addresses the general problem of knowledge representation in Smart Spaces. The main objective is to develop knowledge-based models, equipped with semantics to learn, infer and monitor human behaviours in Smart Spaces. Moreover, it is easy to recognize that some aspects of this problem have a high degree of uncertainty, and therefore, the developed models must be equipped with mechanisms to manage this type of information. A fuzzy ontology and a semantic hybrid system are presented to allow modelling and recognition of a set of complex real-life scenarios where vagueness and uncertainty are inherent to the human nature of the users that perform it. The handling of uncertain, incomplete and vague data (i.e., missing sensor readings and activity execution variations, since human behaviour is non-deterministic) is approached for the rst time through a fuzzy ontology validated on real-time settings within a hybrid data-driven and knowledgebased architecture. The semantics of activities, sub-activities and real-time object interaction are taken into consideration. The proposed framework consists of two main modules: the low-level sub-activity recognizer and the high-level activity recognizer. The rst module detects sub-activities (i.e., actions or basic activities) that take input data directly from a depth sensor (Kinect). The main contribution of this thesis tackles the second component of the hybrid system, which lays on top of the previous one, in a superior level of abstraction, and acquires the input data from the rst module's output, and executes ontological inference to provide users, activities and their in uence in the environment, with semantics. This component is thus knowledge-based, and a fuzzy ontology was designed to model the high-level activities. Since activity recognition requires context-awareness and the ability to discriminate among activities in di erent environments, the semantic framework allows for modelling common-sense knowledge in the form of a rule-based system that supports expressions close to natural language in the form of fuzzy linguistic labels. The framework advantages have been evaluated with a challenging and new public dataset, CAD-120, achieving an accuracy of 90.1% and 91.1% respectively for low and high-level activities. This entails an improvement over both, entirely data-driven approaches, and merely ontology-based approaches. As an added value, for the system to be su ciently simple and exible to be managed by non-expert users, and thus, facilitate the transfer of research to industry, a development framework composed by a programming toolbox, a hybrid crisp and fuzzy architecture, and graphical models to represent and con gure human behaviour in Smart Spaces, were developed in order to provide the framework with more usability in the nal application. As a result, human behaviour recognition can help assisting people with special needs such as in healthcare, independent elderly living, in remote rehabilitation monitoring, industrial process guideline control, and many other cases. This thesis shows use cases in these areas.

Laser cutting implementation possibilities into paper making machine was studied as the main objective of the work. Laser cutting technology application was considered as a replacement tool for conventional cutting methods used in paper making machines for longitudinal cutting such as edge trimming at different paper making process and tambour roll slitting. Laser cutting of paper was tested in 70’s for the first time. Since then, laser cutting and processing has been applied for paper materials with different level of success in industry. Laser cutting can be employed for longitudinal cutting of paper web in machine direction. The most common conventional cutting methods include water jet cutting and rotating slitting blades applied in paper making machines. Cutting with CO2 laser fulfils basic requirements for cutting quality, applicability to material and cutting speeds in all locations where longitudinal cutting is needed. Literature review provided description of advantages, disadvantages and challenges of laser technology when it was applied for cutting of paper material with particular attention to cutting of moving paper web. Based on studied laser cutting capabilities and problem definition of conventional cutting technologies, preliminary selection of the most promising application area was carried out. Laser cutting (trimming) of paper web edges in wet end was estimated to be the most promising area where it can be implemented. This assumption was made on the basis of rate of web breaks occurrence. It was found that up to 64 % of total number of web breaks occurred in wet end, particularly in location of so called open draws where paper web was transferred unsupported by wire or felt. Distribution of web breaks in machine cross direction revealed that defects of paper web edge was the main reason of tearing initiation and consequent web break. The assumption was made that laser cutting was capable of improvement of laser cut edge tensile strength due to high cutting quality and sealing effect of the edge after laser cutting. Studies of laser ablation of cellulose supported this claim. Linear energy needed for cutting was calculated with regard to paper web properties in intended laser cutting location. Calculated linear cutting energy was verified with series of laser cutting. Practically obtained laser energy needed for cutting deviated from calculated values. This could be explained by difference in heat transfer via radiation in laser cutting and different absorption characteristics of dry and moist paper material. Laser cut samples (both dry and moist (dry matter content about 25-40%)) were tested for strength properties. It was shown that tensile strength and strain break of laser cut samples are similar to corresponding values of non-laser cut samples. Chosen method, however, did not address tensile strength of laser cut edge in particular. Thus, the assumption of improving strength properties with laser cutting was not fully proved. Laser cutting effect on possible pollution of mill broke (recycling of trimmed edge) was carried out. Laser cut samples (both dry and moist) were tested on the content of dirt particles. The tests revealed that accumulation of dust particles on the surface of moist samples can take place. This has to be taken into account to prevent contamination of pulp suspension when trim waste is recycled. Material loss due to evaporation during laser cutting and amount of solid residues after cutting were evaluated. Edge trimming with laser would result in 0.25 kg/h of solid residues and 2.5 kg/h of lost material due to evaporation. Schemes of laser cutting implementation and needed laser equipment were discussed. Generally, laser cutting system would require two laser sources (one laser source for each cutting zone), set of beam transfer and focusing optics and cutting heads. In order to increase reliability of system, it was suggested that each laser source would have double capacity. That would allow to perform cutting employing one laser source working at full capacity for both cutting zones. Laser technology is in required level at the moment and do not require additional development. Moreover, capacity of speed increase is high due to availability high power laser sources what can support the tendency of speed increase of paper making machines. Laser cutting system would require special roll to maintain cutting. The scheme of such roll was proposed as well as roll integration into paper making machine. Laser cutting can be done in location of central roll in press section, before so-called open draw where many web breaks occur, where it has potential to improve runability of a paper making machine. Economic performance of laser cutting was done as comparison of laser cutting system and water jet cutting working in the same conditions. It was revealed that laser cutting would still be about two times more expensive compared to water jet cutting. This is mainly due to high investment cost of laser equipment and poor energy efficiency of CO2 lasers. Another factor is that laser cutting causes material loss due to evaporation whereas water jet cutting almost does not cause material loss. Despite difficulties of laser cutting implementation in paper making machine, its implementation can be beneficial. The crucial role in that is possibility to improve cut edge strength properties and consequently reduce number of web breaks. Capacity of laser cutting to maintain cutting speeds which exceed current speeds of paper making machines what is another argument to consider laser cutting technology in design of new high speed paper making machines.

Traditionally metacognition has been theorised, methodologically studied and empirically tested from the standpoint mainly of individuals and their learning contexts. In this dissertation the emergence of metacognition is analysed more broadly. The aim of the dissertation was to explore socially shared metacognitive regulation (SSMR) as part of collaborative learning processes taking place in student dyads and small learning groups. The specific aims were to extend the concept of individual metacognition to SSMR, to develop methods to capture and analyse SSMR and to validate the usefulness of the concept of SSMR in two different learning contexts; in face-to-face student dyads solving mathematical word problems and also in small groups taking part in inquiry-based science learning in an asynchronous computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. This dissertation is comprised of four studies. In Study I, the main aim was to explore if and how metacognition emerges during problem solving in student dyads and then to develop a method for analysing the social level of awareness, monitoring, and regulatory processes emerging during the problem solving. Two dyads comprised of 10-year-old students who were high-achieving especially in mathematical word problem solving and reading comprehension were involved in the study. An in-depth case analysis was conducted. Data consisted of over 16 (30–45 minutes) videotaped and transcribed face-to-face sessions. The dyads solved altogether 151 mathematical word problems of different difficulty levels in a game-format learning environment. The interaction flowchart was used in the analysis to uncover socially shared metacognition. Interviews (also stimulated recall interviews) were conducted in order to obtain further information about socially shared metacognition. The findings showed the emergence of metacognition in a collaborative learning context in a way that cannot solely be explained by individual conception. The concept of socially-shared metacognition (SSMR) was proposed. The results highlighted the emergence of socially shared metacognition specifically in problems where dyads encountered challenges. Small verbal and nonverbal signals between students also triggered the emergence of socially shared metacognition. Additionally, one dyad implemented a system whereby they shared metacognitive regulation based on their strengths in learning. Overall, the findings suggested that in order to discover patterns of socially shared metacognition, it is important to investigate metacognition over time. However, it was concluded that more research on socially shared metacognition, from larger data sets, is needed. These findings formed the basis of the second study. In Study II, the specific aim was to investigate whether socially shared metacognition can be reliably identified from a large dataset of collaborative face-to-face mathematical word problem solving sessions by student dyads. We specifically examined different difficulty levels of tasks as well as the function and focus of socially shared metacognition. Furthermore, the presence of observable metacognitive experiences at the beginning of socially shared metacognition was explored. Four dyads participated in the study. Each dyad was comprised of high-achieving 10-year-old students, ranked in the top 11% of their fourth grade peers (n=393). Dyads were from the same data set as in Study I. The dyads worked face-to-face in a computer-supported, game-format learning environment. Problem-solving processes for 251 tasks at three difficulty levels taking place during 56 (30–45 minutes) lessons were video-taped and analysed. Baseline data for this study were 14 675 turns of transcribed verbal and nonverbal behaviours observed in four study dyads. The micro-level analysis illustrated how participants moved between different channels of communication (individual and interpersonal). The unit of analysis was a set of turns, referred to as an ‘episode’. The results indicated that socially shared metacognition and its function and focus, as well as the appearance of metacognitive experiences can be defined in a reliable way from a larger data set by independent coders. A comparison of the different difficulty levels of the problems suggested that in order to trigger socially shared metacognition in small groups, the problems should be more difficult, as opposed to moderately difficult or easy. Although socially shared metacognition was found in collaborative face-to-face problem solving among high-achieving student dyads, more research is needed in different contexts. This consideration created the basis of the research on socially shared metacognition in Studies III and IV. In Study III, the aim was to expand the research on SSMR from face-to-face mathematical problem solving in student dyads to inquiry-based science learning among small groups in an asynchronous computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment. The specific aims were to investigate SSMR’s evolvement and functions in a CSCL environment and to explore how SSMR emerges at different phases of the inquiry process. Finally, individual student participation in SSMR during the process was studied. An in-depth explanatory case study of one small group of four girls aged 12 years was carried out. The girls attended a class that has an entrance examination and conducts a language-enriched curriculum. The small group solved complex science problems in an asynchronous CSCL environment, participating in research-like processes of inquiry during 22 lessons (á 45–minute). Students’ network discussion were recorded in written notes (N=640) which were used as study data. A set of notes, referred to here as a ‘thread’, was used as the unit of analysis. The inter-coder agreement was regarded as substantial. The results indicated that SSMR emerges in a small group’s asynchronous CSCL inquiry process in the science domain. Hence, the results of Study III were in line with the previous Study I and Study II and revealed that metacognition cannot be reduced to the individual level alone. The findings also confirm that SSMR should be examined as a process, since SSMR can evolve during different phases and that different SSMR threads overlapped and intertwined. Although the classification of SSMR’s functions was applicable in the context of CSCL in a small group, the dominant function was different in the asynchronous CSCL inquiry in the small group in a science activity than in mathematical word problem solving among student dyads (Study II). Further, the use of different analytical methods provided complementary findings about students’ participation in SSMR. The findings suggest that it is not enough to code just a single written note or simply to examine who has the largest number of notes in the SSMR thread but also to examine the connections between the notes. As the findings of the present study are based on an in-depth analysis of a single small group, further cases were examined in Study IV, as well as looking at the SSMR’s focus, which was also studied in a face-to-face context. In Study IV, the general aim was to investigate the emergence of SSMR with a larger data set from an asynchronous CSCL inquiry process in small student groups carrying out science activities. The specific aims were to study the emergence of SSMR in the different phases of the process, students’ participation in SSMR, and the relation of SSMR’s focus to the quality of outcomes, which was not explored in previous studies. The participants were 12-year-old students from the same class as in Study III. Five small groups consisting of four students and one of five students (N=25) were involved in the study. The small groups solved ill-defined science problems in an asynchronous CSCL environment, participating in research-like processes of inquiry over a total period of 22 hours. Written notes (N=4088) detailed the network discussions of the small groups and these constituted the study data. With these notes, SSMR threads were explored. As in Study III, the thread was used as the unit of analysis. In total, 332 notes were classified as forming 41 SSMR threads. Inter-coder agreement was assessed by three coders in the different phases of the analysis and found to be reliable. Multiple methods of analysis were used. Results showed that SSMR emerged in all the asynchronous CSCL inquiry processes in the small groups. However, the findings did not reveal any significantly changing trend in the emergence of SSMR during the process. As a main trend, the number of notes included in SSMR threads differed significantly in different phases of the process and small groups differed from each other. Although student participation was seen as highly dispersed between the students, there were differences between students and small groups. Furthermore, the findings indicated that the amount of SSMR during the process or participation structure did not explain the differences in the quality of outcomes for the groups. Rather, when SSMRs were focused on understanding and procedural matters, it was associated with achieving high quality learning outcomes. In turn, when SSMRs were focused on incidental and procedural matters, it was associated with low level learning outcomes. Hence, the findings imply that the focus of any emerging SSMR is crucial to the quality of the learning outcomes. Moreover, the findings encourage the use of multiple research methods for studying SSMR. In total, the four studies convincingly indicate that a phenomenon of socially shared metacognitive regulation also exists. This means that it was possible to define the concept of SSMR theoretically, to investigate it methodologically and to validate it empirically in two different learning contexts across dyads and small groups. In-depth micro-level case analysis in Studies I and III showed the possibility to capture and analyse in detail SSMR during the collaborative process, while in Studies II and IV, the analysis validated the emergence of SSMR in larger data sets. Hence, validation was tested both between two environments and within the same environments with further cases. As a part of this dissertation, SSMR’s detailed functions and foci were revealed. Moreover, the findings showed the important role of observable metacognitive experiences as the starting point of SSMRs. It was apparent that problems dealt with by the groups should be rather difficult if SSMR is to be made clearly visible. Further, individual students’ participation was found to differ between students and groups. The multiple research methods employed revealed supplementary findings regarding SSMR. Finally, when SSMR was focused on understanding and procedural matters, this was seen to lead to higher quality learning outcomes. Socially shared metacognition regulation should therefore be taken into consideration in students’ collaborative learning at school similarly to how an individual’s metacognition is taken into account in individual learning.
