Numbers and Languages

The thesis presents results obtained during the authors PhD-studies. First systems of language equations of a simple form consisting of just two equations are proved to be computationally universal. These are systems over unary alphabet, that are seen as systems of equations over natural numbers. The systems contain only an equation X+A=B and an equation X+X+C=X+X+D, where A, B, C and D are eventually periodic constants. It is proved that for every recursive set S there exists natural numbers p and d, and eventually periodic sets A, B, C and D such that a number n is in S if and only if np+d is in the unique solution of the abovementioned system of two equations, so all recursive sets can be represented in an encoded form. It is also proved that all recursive sets cannot be represented as they are, so the encoding is really needed. Furthermore, it is proved that the family of languages generated by Boolean grammars is closed under injective gsm-mappings and inverse gsm-mappings. The arguments apply also for the families of unambiguous Boolean languages, conjunctive languages and unambiguous languages. Finally, characterizations for morphisims preserving subfamilies of context-free languages are presented. It is shown that the families of deterministic and LL context-free languages are closed under codes if and only if they are of bounded deciphering delay. These families are also closed under non-codes, if they map every letter into a submonoid generated by a single word. The family of unambiguous context-free languages is closed under all codes and under the same non-codes as the families of deterministic and LL context-free languages.

Energiatehokkuusliiketoiminnan syntyminen ja sen kehittäminen sähköyhtiössä – Case Yritys X

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten energia-alan toimialamuutos on vaikuttanut energiatehokkuusliiketoiminnan syntymiseen, mitä eri maiden energiayhtiöiden energiatehokkuusliiketoimintaan sisältyy ja onko energiatehokkuustuotteiden ja -palveluiden myynnissä maidenvälisiä eroja. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa pyritään selvittämään, onko ulkomaiden tuote- ja palvelukonsepteissa sellaisia eroavaisuuksia, joita voitaisiin käyttää case-yrityksen liiketoiminnassa hyödyksi. Tutkimuksessa kuvaillaan ilmiötä, jossa toimialamuutos on saanut energiayhtiöt kehittämään uuden energiatehokkuustuotteiden liiketoiminnan. Työssä selvitetään, onko energiatehokkuustuotteiden ala samanlainen Suomessa kuin ulkomaillakin ja löytyykö eri maista erilaisia käytäntöjä sekä tuote- ja palvelukonsepteja, joita Yritys X voisi tutkia ja aloittaa tuotteistamaan omaa tuotevalikoimaansa varten.

Työhyvinvointimallin rakentaminen yrityksessä x

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kuvata erään yrityksen työhyvinvointimallin rakentamista. Tavoitteena oli tarkastella myös työhyvinvoinnin kehittämistoimenpiteitä ja kehittämistarpeita kyseisessä yrityksessä. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tapaustutkimuksena haastattelemalla yrityksen työhyvinvointitoimijoita syksyllä 2011 ja projektin aikana, sekä hyödyntämällä valmista materiaalia. Tutkimuksen tuloksena havaittiin, että kohdeyrityksessä työhyvinvointiin vaikuttavat tekijät ovat hyvin samankaltaisia kuin aiemmassa työhyvinvointia koskevassa tutkimuksessa esiin nousseet tekijät. Esimiestyö nousi esiin suurimpana työhyvinvointiin vaikuttavana tekijänä. Muita esiin nousseita tekijöitä olivat kiire, resurssointi ja aikataulupaineet. Kohdeyrityksessä koettiin myös jatkuvien organisaatiomuutosten vaikuttaneen työhyvinvointiin. Työhyvinvoinnin tilan seuraamiseksi asetettiin mittarit. On tärkeää että mittareilla seurataan työhyvinvoinnin tilaa laaja-alaisesti, niin ennakoivilla kuin jälkijättöisillä mittareilla, sekä pohditaan aika-ajoin onko käytössä oikeat mittarit ja miten niistä saatuun tietoon pystytään reagoimaan.

Ultimate capacity of stainless steel rectangular hollow section X- joints at low temperatures

Growing demand for stainless steel construction materials has increased the popularity of substitutive materials for austenitic stainless steels. The lean duplex grades have taken their place in building of structures exposed to corrosive environments. Since the duplex grades are relatively new materials, the current codes and norms do not fully cover the newest duplex grades. The joints tested in this thesis were designed and studied according to Eurocode 3, even though all the materials are not yet accepted to the standards. The main objective in this thesis was to determine the differences of the used materials in behaviour under loading at low temperatures. Tests in which the deformation and strength properties of the joints were determined were done at the temperature of -46°C, which is the requirement of temperature for structures designed according to Norsok standards. Results show that replacing the austenitic grade with the lean duplex grade is acceptable.
