In recent decades, industrial activity growth and increasing water usage worldwide have led to the release of various pollutants, such as toxic heavy metals and nutrients, into the aquatic environment. Modified nanocellulose and microcellulose-based adsorption materials have the potential to remove these contaminants from aqueous solutions. The present research consisted of the preparation of five different nano/microcellulose-based adsorbents, their characterization, the study of adsorption kinetics and isotherms, the determination of adsorption mechanisms, and an evaluation of adsorbents’ regeneration properties. The same well known reactions and modification methods that were used for modifying conventional cellulose also worked for microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). The use of succinic anhydride modified mercerized nanocellulose, and aminosilane and hydroxyapatite modified nanostructured MFC for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions exhibited promising results. Aminosilane, epoxy and hydroxyapatite modified MFC could be used as a promising alternative for H2S removal from aqueous solutions. In addition, new knowledge about the adsorption properties of carbonated hydroxyapatite modified MFC as multifunctional adsorbent for the removal of both cations and anions ions from water was obtained. The maghemite nanoparticles (Fe3O4) modified MFC was found to be a highly promising adsorbent for the removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions due to its magnetic properties, high surface area, and high adsorption capacity . The maximum removal efficiencies of each adsorbent were studied in batch mode. The results of adsorption kinetics indicated very fast removal rates for all the studied pollutants. Modeling of adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics using various theoretical models provided information about the adsorbent’s surface properties and the adsorption mechanisms. This knowledge is important for instance, in designing water treatment units/plants. Furthermore, the correspondence between the theory behind the model and properties of the adsorbent as well as adsorption mechanisms were also discussed. On the whole, both the experimental results and theoretical considerations supported the potential applicability of the studied nano/microcellulose-based adsorbents in water treatment applications.

The dissertation proposes two control strategies, which include the trajectory planning and vibration suppression, for a kinematic redundant serial-parallel robot machine, with the aim of attaining the satisfactory machining performance. For a given prescribed trajectory of the robot's end-effector in the Cartesian space, a set of trajectories in the robot's joint space are generated based on the best stiffness performance of the robot along the prescribed trajectory. To construct the required system-wide analytical stiffness model for the serial-parallel robot machine, a variant of the virtual joint method (VJM) is proposed in the dissertation. The modified method is an evolution of Gosselin's lumped model that can account for the deformations of a flexible link in more directions. The effectiveness of this VJM variant is validated by comparing the computed stiffness results of a flexible link with the those of a matrix structural analysis (MSA) method. The comparison shows that the numerical results from both methods on an individual flexible beam are almost identical, which, in some sense, provides mutual validation. The most prominent advantage of the presented VJM variant compared with the MSA method is that it can be applied in a flexible structure system with complicated kinematics formed in terms of flexible serial links and joints. Moreover, by combining the VJM variant and the virtual work principle, a systemwide analytical stiffness model can be easily obtained for mechanisms with both serial kinematics and parallel kinematics. In the dissertation, a system-wide stiffness model of a kinematic redundant serial-parallel robot machine is constructed based on integration of the VJM variant and the virtual work principle. Numerical results of its stiffness performance are reported. For a kinematic redundant robot, to generate a set of feasible joints' trajectories for a prescribed trajectory of its end-effector, its system-wide stiffness performance is taken as the constraint in the joints trajectory planning in the dissertation. For a prescribed location of the end-effector, the robot permits an infinite number of inverse solutions, which consequently yields infinite kinds of stiffness performance. Therefore, a differential evolution (DE) algorithm in which the positions of redundant joints in the kinematics are taken as input variables was employed to search for the best stiffness performance of the robot. Numerical results of the generated joint trajectories are given for a kinematic redundant serial-parallel robot machine, IWR (Intersector Welding/Cutting Robot), when a particular trajectory of its end-effector has been prescribed. The numerical results show that the joint trajectories generated based on the stiffness optimization are feasible for realization in the control system since they are acceptably smooth. The results imply that the stiffness performance of the robot machine deviates smoothly with respect to the kinematic configuration in the adjacent domain of its best stiffness performance. To suppress the vibration of the robot machine due to varying cutting force during the machining process, this dissertation proposed a feedforward control strategy, which is constructed based on the derived inverse dynamics model of target system. The effectiveness of applying such a feedforward control in the vibration suppression has been validated in a parallel manipulator in the software environment. The experimental study of such a feedforward control has also been included in the dissertation. The difficulties of modelling the actual system due to the unknown components in its dynamics is noticed. As a solution, a back propagation (BP) neural network is proposed for identification of the unknown components of the dynamics model of the target system. To train such a BP neural network, a modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm that can utilize an experimental input-output data set of the entire dynamic system is introduced in the dissertation. Validation of the BP neural network and the modified Levenberg- Marquardt algorithm is done, respectively, by a sinusoidal output approximation, a second order system parameters estimation, and a friction model estimation of a parallel manipulator, which represent three different application aspects of this method.

The power is still today an issue in wearable computing applications. The aim of the present paper is to raise awareness of the power consumption of wearable computing devices in specific scenarios to be able in the future to design energy efficient wireless sensors for context recognition in wearable computing applications. The approach is based on a hardware study. The objective of this paper is to analyze and compare the total power consumption of three representative wearable computing devices in realistic scenarios such as Display, Speaker, Camera and microphone, Transfer by Wi-Fi, Monitoring outdoor physical activity and Pedometer. A scenario based energy model is also developed. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus I9250 smartphone, the Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses and the SimValley Smartwatch AW-420.RX are the three devices representative of their form factors. The power consumption is measured using PowerTutor, an android energy profiler application with logging option and using unknown parameters so it is adjusted with the USB meter. The result shows that the screen size is the main parameter influencing the power consumption. The power consumption for an identical scenario varies depending on the wearable devices meaning that others components, parameters or processes might impact on the power consumption and further study is needed to explain these variations. This paper also shows that different inputs (touchscreen is more efficient than buttons controls) and outputs (speaker sensor is more efficient than display sensor) impact the energy consumption in different way. This paper gives recommendations to reduce the energy consumption in healthcare wearable computing application using the energy model.

Avhandlingen handlar om pappers- och membranbaserad jonmodulerad elektronik. Målet med forskningen har varit att utveckla billig, miljövänlig och brännbar elektronik, som kan användas i vardagliga engångsprodukter. Baskomponenterna som utvecklas och presenteras i avhandlingen är transistorer och kondensatorer. Mer komplicerad logisk kretselektronik demonstreras också med hjälp av dessa komponenter. Substraten som utnyttjas vid framställningen av dessa elektroniska komponenter är papper och membran. Dessa substrat är flexibla, hållbara, billiga, miljövänliga, etc. och därför väl anpassade för befintliga tryckteknologier. Själva baskomponenterna framställs sedan på dessa substrat genom att trycka flera skikt på varandra, där varje enskilt skikt är ett individuellt material. Detta är möjligt eftersom de organiska materialen som används i dessa komponenter är upplösta i ett lösningsmedel och kan därmed tryckas på samma sätt som ett vanligt bläck. Ett tredimensionellt objekt kan på detta sätt framställas. I avhandlingen presenteras flera olika typer av transistorer, men den gemensamma nämnaren bland dessa är att isolatorn är en jonledare. Denna, ganska ovanliga, transistormodellen har den stora fördelen att lågspänningskomponenter kan relativt enkelt framställas. Det som är speciellt med våra transistorer är att vi har använt miljövänliga jonledare. Detta, bl.a., leder till att våra komponenter visar både god prestanda, tillika som de är miljövänliga. I avhandlingen demonstrerar vi även tryckta superkondensatorer, en motsvarighet till laddningsbara batterier, konstruerade på papper med aktiverat kol och miljövänliga jonledare. De mest komplicerade logiska kretsar som demonstreras i denna avhandling är ring-oscillatorer och 1-bits-minnen konstruerade på papper. --------------------------------------------- Väitöskirja käsittelee paperille ja polymeerikalvolle tulostettua ionimoduloitua elektroniikkaa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kehittää edullista, ympäristöystävällistä ja polttokelpoista elektroniikkaa, jota voidaan käyttää esim. tavanomaisissa kertakäyttötuotteissa. Väitöskirjassa esitellään erilaisia transistoreita ja kondensaattoreita. Näitä elektronisia peruskomponentteja käyttäen demonstroidaan myös monimutkaisempia loogisia piirejä. Komponenttien valmistuksessa alustana käytettiin paperia ja polymeerikalvoa. Valitut alustat ovat joustavia ja kestäviä, ja ovat siksi hyvin yhteensopivia olemassa olevien tulostusmenetelmien kanssa. Peruskomponentit valmistettiin tulostamalla eri materiaaleja päällekkäin. Komponenteissa käytettävät orgaaniset aineet ovat liuenneessa muodossa musteessa, joka voidaan tulostaa samalla periaatteella kuin mikä tahansa normaali muste. Tällä menetelmällä voidaan valmistaa myös kolmiulotteisia tuotteita. Väitöskirjassa esitellään useita erityyppisiä transistoreita, joissa yhdistävänä tekijänä on ionisesti johtava eriste. Tällaista suhteellisen harvinaista transistorityyppiä käyttämällä voidaan mahdollistaa matala-jännitteisten komponenttien yksinkertainen valmistus. Valmistettujen transistoreiden etu on ionisten nesteiden ympäristöystävällisyys. Elektroniset komponentit ovat täten hyviä suorituskyvyltään, mutteivät haitallisia ympäristölle. Väitöskirjassa demonstroidaan myös tulostettujen superkondensaattoreiden, eli ladattavien paristojen vastineiden, valmistus paperille aktiivihiiltä ja ionisia nesteitä käyttäen. Kaikkein monimutkaisimmat loogiset piirit, jotka tässä väitöskirjassa esitellään, ovat rengasoskillaattorit sekä 1-bittinen paperille valmistettu muisti.

The lack of research of private real estate is a well-known problem. Earlier studies have mostly concentrated on the USA or the UK. Therefore, this master thesis offers more information about the performance and risk associated with private real estate investments in Nordic countries, but especially in Finland. The structure of this master thesis is divided into two independent sections based on the research questions. In first section, database analysis is performed to assess risk-return ratio of direct real estate investment for Nordic countries. Risk-return ratios are also assessed for different property sectors and economic regions. Finally, review of diversification strategies based on property sectors and economic regions is performed. However, standard deviation itself is not usually sufficient method to evaluate riskiness of private real estate. There is demand for more explicit assessment of property risk. One solution is property risk scoring. In second section risk scorecard based tool is built to make different real estate comparable in terms of risk. In order to do this, nine real estate professionals were interviewed to enhance the structure of theory-based risk scorecard and to assess weights for different risk factors.

The purpose of this thesis is to focus on credit risk estimation. Different credit risk estimation methods and characteristics of credit risk are discussed. The study is twofold, including an interview of a credit risk specialist and a quantitative section. Quantitative section applies the KMV model to estimate credit risk of 12 sample companies from three different industries: automobile, banking and financial sector and technology. Timeframe of the estimation is one year. On the basis of the KMV model and the interview, implications for analysis of credit risk are discussed. The KMV model yields consistent results with the existing credit ratings. However, banking and financial sector requires calibration of the model due to high leverage of the industry. Credit risk is considerably driven by leverage, value and volatility of assets. Credit risk models produce useful information on credit worthiness of a business. Yet, quantitative models often require qualitative support in the decision-making situation.
