The objective of this study was research the shared knowledge and the means of sharing with the help of social network analysis. The purpose of this study was to give descriptive information to case-organization about its situational network status in different units. The premise of the study is the success of organizational competences and networks, especially when it comes to the sharing of knowledge. The research was accomplished in a TEKES –projects, Developing Network-Based Services – The Role of Competences and Networks COMNET –projects case-organization. Lappeenranta School of Business and the case-organization started the project in co-operation. The baseline for the study was organizational competencies and organizational networks as success factors, especially from the knowledge sharing’s point of view. The research was based on triangulation, which included pre-interviews, network analyses accomplished by Webropol –e-mail survey and qualitative interviews. The results indicated that regular unit meetings were experienced to be the most important method of knowledge sharing along with e-mailing, intranet and weekly bulletins. The co-operation between units was also experienced to be important when evaluating knowledge sharing and communication. The intrafirm network was experienced tight. Dispersed units and partly unclear means of information sharing were the biggest obstacles for information communication. Knowledge sharing, communication with others and trainings were seen important in the case-organization.

This study examines performance persistence of hedge funds from investor's point of view and look at the methods by which an investor could choose the successful hedge funds to the portfolio. This study was used the data from HFI & Tremont databases on period 1998-2007. In this study used the 36-month combination (24-month selection and 12-month prediction periods). As the research methods used the Sharpe index, raw returns, MVR (mean variance ratio), GSC-clustering, the SDI index and the new combination of metrics. The evaluation criterions of the results used the volatility, excess returns and the Sharpe index. This study compared different results from the 7 time series with each other, and commenting the problems on a portfolio loss of funds.

Väestön ikääntyminen pakottaa yhteiskunnan ja julkisen terveydenhuollon muutoksiin. Jotta ikääntyvien ihmisten kotona asuminen voidaan mahdollistaa, palvelujärjestelmän pitää mukautua muuttuvaan tilanteeseen. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena on tunnistaa asiakaslähtöisiä lähellä asiakasta tarjottavia palvelukokonaisuuksia. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys muodostuu asiakasarvon luomisesta ja palvelutarjoamista. Tarkasteluryhmänä on Etelä-Karjalan alueen 60–90-vuotiaat ja käytetty aineisto on kerätty vastaajilta postitse lähetetyllä kyselyllä. Tutkimus on eksploratiivinen ja tulosten tulkinnassa on hyödynnetty määrällisen tutkimuksen ja verkostoanalyysin menetelmiä. Työn keskeisimmät tulokset ovat tunnistetut asiakassegmentit ja heidän tarpeidensa pohjalta muodostetut palvelupaketit. Tulokset indikoivat asiakkaiden tarpeita ja tuloksia on analysoitu myös tuottajan näkökulmasta. Empiiristen tulosten lisäksi teoriaviitekehystä on kehitetty eteenpäin, jotta palvelukeskeiset teoriat voidaan ymmärtää yritysten näkökulman lisäksi asiakkaan näkökulmasta.

This study focuses on the relationship between organizational network competence and the internationalization process of small- and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Over recent decades, the global business environment has become increasingly conducive to internationalization of small firms. A central facilitating factor in the process has been the emergence of networked business relationships between internationalizing firms. Research on SME internationalization has found that certain types of structures and dynamics of business networks allow SMEs access to the resources they need to enter foreign markets. This consequently means that their internationalization often becomes to depend on the networks they are embedded in. However, research so far has mostly ignored the possibility that the organizational ability to develop and manage business network relationships, network competence, may be a major underlying factor in determining how well SMEs can leverage their network relationships to enter foreign markets and consequently may determine in large part how successful their internationalization process turns out to be. This study aims to respond to those gaps, by empirically examining how the development of network competence in internationalizing SMEs influences the internationalization outcomes that they can expect, and how such network competence is conceptualized and developed. Using a mixed methods approach, survey data collected from 298 Finnish SMEs across five industry sectors is first used to examine how levels of network competence are related to internationalization propensity of SMEs and their subsequent international performance, growth and profitability as internationally operating firms. In order to illustrate in more detail the ways in which network competence is conceptualized and how it develops during the internationalization process of an SME, qualitative data from internationally operating Finnish SMEs are used. Longitudinal interview data of an internationalizing Finnish SME is accompanied by data gathered through a series of semistructured interviews of Finnish and Russian managers involved in mutual business relationship dyads. Structurally, this thesis examines the research issue as an article-based dissertation, consisting of five journal and conference publications. Three of these publications are based on the quantitative data, and the remaining two apply the qualitative interview data. The results find several aspects where network competence has a positive influence on the success of internationalizing SMEs, how it develops and what it entails conceptually in this context. Quantitatively, the level of network competence is found to have a positive relationship to various internationalization outcomes, including the propensity of SMEs to enter foreign markets and on their subsequent international performance, their growth and their profitability. Additionally, the positive relationship is divided between the relationship-specific and cross-relational dimension of network competence, in that the influence of the former is relevant for the propensity to internationalize, while the latter is for the growth and profitability of the already internationalized SMEs. Qualitatively, the results suggest, firstly, that the development process of network competence does not necessarily precede the start of the internationalization process, but may occur through a gradual learning process alongside it. And secondly, the results also imply that the conceptualization of network competence by Finnish managers of internationally operating Finnish SMEs is structurally distinct from that of their culturally distinct partner managers in Russia. This study contributes to the literature on SME internationalization in several ways. Firstly, it introduces operationalized organizational competencies to the literature on internationalization of SMEs, which has so far mainly examined the influence of business networking on the internationalization process without having such an organizational viewpoint. Furthermore, this study provides a multi-level analysis of the determinants of successful SME internationalization, by examining various strategic and performance outcomes across the process. These results also contribute to the literature on organizational strategy of internationalizing SMEs, by clarifying how different dimensions of business networking may be optimal in different phases of the internationalization process. Conceptually, the results of this study contribute to the literature on competence development and SME internationalization, by illustrating how the development process of network competence may occur during internationalization process. Thus, they also contribute to the discussion on how SMEs are able to influence the dynamics and structures of their business networks over time. Finally, this study contributes to the literature on the role of culture in the internationalization process, by implying that the cultural background of the manager of the SME may determine whether business networking and network competence is seen as an organizational-level or an individual level capability. The study also includes some additional contributions to the literature on dynamic capabilities in strategic management, and on that of strategic business networks. These include further clarifying the exact nature and tangibility of dynamic capabilities, and being one of the first studies to introduce constructs from both dynamic capabilities and business network literature to the field of international entrepreneurship. And finally, the study also has some contribution on the two streams of literature, in illustrating how both dyadic and network-level capabilities may be relevant, depending on the current strategic goals and market position of the firm. Diplomityön tarkoitus on tehostaa lämmityslinjan kokoonpanosoluja käyttämällä erilaisia Lean – työkaluja. Pyrkimys on lisätä järjestystä 5S - työkalun avulla sekä selvittää lämmitinlinjan työntekijän ajankäyttö. Lämmitinlinjan suurimmat ongelmat selvitetään häviön mittauksen ja kartoituksen avulla. Työntekijöiden työmenetelmät tutkitaan käyttämällä MTM (Methods-Time Measurement)– menetelmää, jossa yksittäinen työsuoritus kuvataan videolle. Video pisteytetään ja työntekijän liikkeet analysoidaan. Videon pohjalta havaitaan kehityskohteet työpisteissä ja työmenetelmissä, ja ne organisoidaan sekä standardoidaan uudestaan. Materiaalivirtauksen ongelma ratkaistaan siirtämällä komponentit kokoonpanosoluun uuden materiaalipalvelijan toimesta. Menetelmäkehityksen ja paremman järjestyksen avulla kokoonpanosolun tuottavuutta parannetaan 30 prosenttia verrattuna alkuperäiseen tilanteeseen. Lämmitinlinjan häviön mittauksella saavutetaan ymmärrys osaston suurimmista pullonkauloista. Mittauksen avulla tiedetään yksittäisten ongelmien esiintymistiheydet ja koneiden kapasiteettihäviöt. Lämmitinlinjaston tehostaminen tulevaisuudessa vaatii häviöiden alkuperäisten ongelmien ratkaisua.

By so far, scholars have discussed how the characteristics of consumer co-operatives (cooperative principles, values and the dual role of members as the users and owners) can potentially give them a competitive advantage over investor-owned firms (IOFs). In addition, concern for the community (as partly derived from locality and regionality) has been seen as a potential source of success for consumer co-operatives. On the other hand, the geographicbound purpose of consumer co-operation causes that consumer co-operative can be regarded as a challenging company form to manage. This is because, according to the purpose of consumer co-operation, co-operatives are obligated to 1) provide the owners with services and goods that are needed and do so at more affordable prices than their competitors do and/or 2) to operate in areas in which competitors do not want to operate (for example, because of the low profitability in certain area of business or region). Thus, consumer co-operatives have to operate very efficiently in order to execute this geographic-bound corporate purpose (e.g. they cannot withdraw from the competition during the declining stages of business). However, this efficiency cannot be achieved by any means; as the acceptance from the important regional stakeholders is the basic operational precondition and lifeline in the long run. Thereby, the central question for the survival and success of consumer co-operatives is; how should the consumer co-operatives execute its corporate purpose so it can be the best alternative to its members in the long run? This question has remained unanswered and lack empirical evidence in the previous studies on the strategic management of consumer cooperation. In more detail, scholars have not yet empirically investigated the question: How can consumer co-operatives use financial and social capital to achieve a sustained competitive advantage? It is this research gap that this doctoral dissertation aims to fulfil. This doctoral dissertation aims to answer the above questions by combining and utilizing interview data from S Group co-operatives and the central organizations in S Group´s network (overall, 33 interviews were gathered), archival material and 56 published media articles/reports. The study is based on a qualitative case study approach that is aimed at theory development, not theory verification (as the theory is considered as nascent in this field of study). Firstly, the findings of this study indicate that consumer co-operatives accumulate financial capital; 1) by making profit (to invest and grow) and 2) by utilizing a network-based organizational structure (local supply chain economies). As a result of financial capital accumulation, consumer co-operatives are able to achieve efficiency gains but also remain local. In addition, a strong financial capital base increases consumer co-operatives´ independence, competitiveness and their ability to participate in regional development (which is in accordance with their geographically bound corporate purpose). Secondly, consumer cooperatives accumulate social capital through informal networking (with important regional stakeholders), corporate social responsibility (CSR) behaviour and CSR reporting, pursuing common good, and interacting and identity sharing. As a result of social capital accumulation, consumer co-operatives are able to obtain the resources for managing; 1) institutional dependencies and 2) customer relations. By accumulating both social and financial capital through the above presented actions, consumer co-operatives are able to achieve sustained competitive advantage. Finally, this thesis provides useful ideas and new knowledge for cooperative managers concerning why and how consumer co-operatives should accumulate financial and social capital (to achieve sustained competitive advantage), while aligning with their corporate purpose.

This research is an analysis of the value and content of local service offerings that enable longer periods of living at home for elderly people. Mobile health care and new distribution services have provided an interesting solution in this context. The research aim to shed light on the research question, ‘How do we bundle services based on different customer needs?’ A research process consisting of three main phases was applied for this purpose. During this process, elderly customers were segmented, the importance of services was rated and service offerings were defined. Value creation and service offering provides theoretical framework for the research. The target group is South Karelia’s 60 to 90-year old individuals and the data has been acquired via a postal questionnaire. Research has been conducted as exploratory research utilizing the methods of quantitative and social network analysis. The main results of the report are identified customer segments and service packages that fits to the segments’ needs. The results indicate the needs of customers and the results are additionally analysed from the producer’s point of view. In addition to the empirical results, the used theory framework has been developed further in order for the service-related theories to be seen from the customer’s point of view and not just from the producer’s point of view.

The objective of this thesis is to examine distribution network designs and modeling practices and create a framework to identify best possible distribution network structure for the case company. The main research question therefore is: How to optimize case company’s distribution network in terms of customer needs and costs? Theory chapters introduce the basic building blocks of the distribution network design and needed calculation methods and models. Framework for the distribution network projects was created based on the theory and the case study was carried out by following the defined framework. Distribution network calculations were based on the company’s sales plan for the years 2014 - 2020. Main conclusions and recommendations were that the new Asian business strategy requires high investments in logistics and the first step is to open new satellite DC in China as soon as possible to support sales and second possible step is to open regional DC in Asia within 2 - 4 years.

Tutkimus sijoittuu varhaiskasvatuksen hajautetun organisaation kontekstiin, mutta tulokset ovat siirrettävissä muihinkin suomalaisiin kasvatus- ja opetustoimen organisaatioihin. Hajautettujen organisaatioiden tutkimus on ollut varhaiskasvatuksen kentällä vielä vähäistä, vaikka organisaatiomallin vaikutukset johtajuuden toteuttamiselle ovat merkittävät. Hajautetulla organisaatiolla varhaiskasvatuksessa tarkoitetaan sitä, että yhden johtajan alaisuudessa on monta eri päiväkotia tai erilaisia päivähoitomuotoja. Tämä organisaatiomalli on yhä enenevässä määrin kasvava suomalaisessa varhaiskasvatuksessa. Varhaiskasvatuksen hajautettujen organisaatioiden tutkimuksessa on aiemmin tarkasteltu johtajan ja työntekijöiden ja työntekijöiden keskinäisiä ammatillisia suhteita. Tässä tutkimuksessa näkökulma painottuu johtamiseen ja työskentelyyn hajautetuissa organisaatiossa sinänsä sekä myös laadunarviointiin sekä pedagogiikkaan. Viitekehyksenä tutkimuksessa on LMX-teoria (leader-member-exchange, johtajuuden vaihtoteoria), jossa tarkastellaan esimies-alaissuhdetta ja siihen kiinteästi liittyvää luottamuksen käsitettä. Luottamuksen merkitys hajautetuissa organisaatioissa korostuu, koska esimies ei ole fyysisesti päivittäin läsnä työntekijöiden arjessa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan hajautetuissa varhaiskasvatuksen organisaatioissa työskentelyä seuraavien tutkimuskysymysten avulla: 1) Mitkä ovat varhaiskasvatuksen hajautettujen organisaatioiden johtamisen erityispiirteet? 2) Miten eri työntekijäryhmät kokevat hajautetussa organisaatiossa työskentelyn? 3) Millaisia kokemuksia esimiehillä ja työntekijöillä on heidän yksiköissään toteutetusta laadunarvioinnista? 4) Millaiseksi työntekijät ja esimiehet kokevat esimieheltään saadun tuen? Tutkimuksessa oli kolme eri aineistoa. Ensimmäinen aineisto koostui 11 hajautetun organisaation johtajan haastattelusta. Toinen aineisto (n = 223) sisälsi haastateltujen esimiesten lomakevastausten lisäksi heidän alaisuudessaan toimivien työntekijöiden, 10 esimieskoulutukseen osallistuneen johtajan sekä kolmen erillisyksikön työntekijöiden vastaukset. Kolmas aineisto oli kerätty pääkaupunkiseudulta varhaiskasvatuksen johtajilta lomakekyselynä (n = 112). Aineistoa on analysoitu teorialähtöisen ja aineistolähtöisen sisällönanalyysin ja tilastollisten analyysien avulla Tulokset osoittavat, että johtajat kokivat hallinnollisten töiden vievän paljon aikaa. Esimiehen kanssa eri työpaikassa työskentelevät työntekijät hahmottivat koko organisaation selkeämmin kuin esimiehen kanssa fyysisesti samassa paikassa työskentelevät. Esimiesten käsitysten mukaan laadunarviointia suoritettiin enemmän kuin mitä työntekijöiden mukaan. Työntekijät kaipasivat esimiehiltään tukea yhteistyöhön ja vuorovaikutukseen, pedagogiseen ohjaukseen, kehittämiseen ja toiminnan resursseihin liittyen. Erillisyksikössä työskentelevät kokivat saavansa enemmän tukea kuin esimiehen kanssa fyysisesti samassa yksikössä työskentelevät työntekijät. Sekä esimieheltä saadun pedagogisen tuen että luottamuksen kokemukset kiinnittävät tämän tutkimuksen tulosten mukaan huomion rakenteiden merkitykseen hajautetuissa organisaatioissa. Arviointiin, pedagogiseen tukeen ja tiedonkulkuun liittyvien rakenteiden huomioiminen helpottaa hajautetussa organisaatiossa johtamista. Edellisten lisäksi johtajan selkeä visio omasta johtamistyöstään ja jaetun johtajuuden hyödyntäminen edesauttavat työn hallinnan kokemuksia.

Thesis: A liquid-cooled, direct-drive, permanent-magnet, synchronous generator with helical, double-layer, non-overlapping windings formed from a copper conductor with a coaxial internal coolant conduit offers an excellent combination of attributes to reliably provide economic wind power for the coming generation of wind turbines with power ratings between 5 and 20MW. A generator based on the liquid-cooled architecture proposed here will be reliable and cost effective. Its smaller size and mass will reduce build, transport, and installation costs. Summary: Converting wind energy into electricity and transmitting it to an electrical power grid to supply consumers is a relatively new and rapidly developing method of electricity generation. In the most recent decade, the increase in wind energy’s share of overall energy production has been remarkable. Thousands of land-based and offshore wind turbines have been commissioned around the globe, and thousands more are being planned. The technologies have evolved rapidly and are continuing to evolve, and wind turbine sizes and power ratings are continually increasing. Many of the newer wind turbine designs feature drivetrains based on Direct-Drive, Permanent-Magnet, Synchronous Generators (DD-PMSGs). Being low-speed high-torque machines, the diameters of air-cooled DD-PMSGs become very large to generate higher levels of power. The largest direct-drive wind turbine generator in operation today, rated just below 8MW, is 12m in diameter and approximately 220 tonne. To generate higher powers, traditional DD-PMSGs would need to become extraordinarily large. A 15MW air-cooled direct-drive generator would be of colossal size and tremendous mass and no longer economically viable. One alternative to increasing diameter is instead to increase torque density. In a permanent magnet machine, this is best done by increasing the linear current density of the stator windings. However, greater linear current density results in more Joule heating, and the additional heat cannot be removed practically using a traditional air-cooling approach. Direct liquid cooling is more effective, and when applied directly to the stator windings, higher linear current densities can be sustained leading to substantial increases in torque density. The higher torque density, in turn, makes possible significant reductions in DD-PMSG size. Over the past five years, a multidisciplinary team of researchers has applied a holistic approach to explore the application of liquid cooling to permanent-magnet wind turbine generator design. The approach has considered wind energy markets and the economics of wind power, system reliability, electromagnetic behaviors and design, thermal design and performance, mechanical architecture and behaviors, and the performance modeling of installed wind turbines. This dissertation is based on seven publications that chronicle the work. The primary outcomes are the proposal of a novel generator architecture, a multidisciplinary set of analyses to predict the behaviors, and experimentation to demonstrate some of the key principles and validate the analyses. The proposed generator concept is a direct-drive, surface-magnet, synchronous generator with fractional-slot, duplex-helical, double-layer, non-overlapping windings formed from a copper conductor with a coaxial internal coolant conduit to accommodate liquid coolant flow. The novel liquid-cooling architecture is referred to as LC DD-PMSG. The first of the seven publications summarized in this dissertation discusses the technological and economic benefits and limitations of DD-PMSGs as applied to wind energy. The second publication addresses the long-term reliability of the proposed LC DD-PMSG design. Publication 3 examines the machine’s electromagnetic design, and Publication 4 introduces an optimization tool developed to quickly define basic machine parameters. The static and harmonic behaviors of the stator and rotor wheel structures are the subject of Publication 5. And finally, Publications 6 and 7 examine steady-state and transient thermal behaviors. There have been a number of ancillary concrete outcomes associated with the work including the following. X Intellectual Property (IP) for direct liquid cooling of stator windings via an embedded coaxial coolant conduit, IP for a lightweight wheel structure for lowspeed, high-torque electrical machinery, and IP for numerous other details of the LC DD-PMSG design X Analytical demonstrations of the equivalent reliability of the LC DD-PMSG; validated electromagnetic, thermal, structural, and dynamic prediction models; and an analytical demonstration of the superior partial load efficiency and annual energy output of an LC DD-PMSG design X A set of LC DD-PMSG design guidelines and an analytical tool to establish optimal geometries quickly and early on X Proposed 8 MW LC DD-PMSG concepts for both inner and outer rotor configurations Furthermore, three technologies introduced could be relevant across a broader spectrum of applications. 1) The cost optimization methodology developed as part of this work could be further improved to produce a simple tool to establish base geometries for various electromagnetic machine types. 2) The layered sheet-steel element construction technology used for the LC DD-PMSG stator and rotor wheel structures has potential for a wide range of applications. And finally, 3) the direct liquid-cooling technology could be beneficial in higher speed electromotive applications such as vehicular electric drives.

Työn tarkoitus on arvioida ja selvittää, milloin generaattorin uusinta on optimaalista tehdä vesivoimalaitoksella teknisen kunnon suhteen. Melon generaattori otettiin käyttöön vuonna 1971 ja se on peruskunnostettiin 1998. Vuonna 2009 tehdyn kuntokartoituksen mukaan koneelle annettiin laskelmien 20 vuotta elinikään. Alkuperäisessä generaattorissa on ollut ongelmia alusta asti. Alkuperäiset ongelmat pohjautuvat väärään uralukuun, joka aiheutti värinöitä koneeseen. Värinät saatiin korjattua staattorin käämitystä muuttamalla 1973 ja muutos rajoitti generaattorin tehon 33 MW:iin. Myöhemmin konetta on ajettu yli 33 MW:n teholla, joka aiheutti staattorin levypaketin aaltoilun. Aaltoilu olisi voinut aiheuttaa vakan vaurion generaattoriin. Vuonna 2014 tehdyn revision yhteydessä edellä mainitut ongelmat poistuivat. Ottaen huomioon generaattori 2 ongelmat (käyttöönotettu 1971), niin voidaan todeta, että revisio tehtiin täysin optimaaliseen aikaan.

As increasing efficiency of a wind turbine gearbox, more power can be transferred from rotor blades to generator and less power is used to cause wear and heating in the gearbox. By using a simulation model, behavior of the gearbox can be studied before creating expensive prototypes. The objective of the thesis is to model a wind turbine gearbox and its lubrication system to study power losses and heat transfer inside the gearbox and to study the simulation methods of the used software. Software used to create the simulation model is Siemens LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim, which can be used to create one-dimensional mechatronic system simulation models from different fields of engineering. When combining components from different libraries it is possible to create a simulation model, which includes mechanical, thermal and hydraulic models of the gearbox. Results for mechanical, thermal, and hydraulic simulations are presented in the thesis. Due to the large scale of the wind turbine gearbox and the amount of power transmitted, power loss calculations from AMESim software are inaccurate and power losses are modelled as constant efficiency for each gear mesh. Starting values for simulation in thermal and hydraulic simulations were chosen from test measurements and from empirical study as compact and complex design of gearbox prevents accurate test measurements. In further studies to increase the accuracy of the simulation model, components used for power loss calculations needs to be modified and values for unknown variables are needed to be solved through accurate test measurements.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli ymmärtää ja kuvata korkeasti koulutettujen henkilöiden selviytymistä työn menetyksestä ja pitkittyneestä työttömyydestä. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin pakotettua uramuutosta ja työttömyyttä sekä siitä selviytymistä yksilön kokemuksen näkökulmasta. Lisäksi tutkittiin työttömyyden tukipalveluiden hyödyllisyyttä. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena kuvailevana tapaustutkimuksena. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla 13 korkeasti koulutettua uusimaalaista työtöntä henkilöä. Haastattelut toteutettiin puolistrukturoitua teemahaastattelumenetelmää käyttäen. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella voidaan havaita, että työn menetyksellä koettiin olevan sekä negatiivisia että positiivisia vaikutuksia. Työn menetys koettiin osittain helpotuksena ja hengähdystaukona. Henkilöt selviytyivät itse työn menetyksen tilanteesta jokseenkin hyvin, etenkin jos muutokseen oli voinut varautua ja irtisanomisperusteet olivat selkeät. Korkeasti koulutetut henkilöt käyttivät monipuolisesti sekä tunne- että ongelmakeskeisiä selviytymisstrategioita selviytyäkseen työttömyydestä. Näistä aktiivinen työnhaku sekä opiskelu korostuivat selviytymiskeinoina. Työttömyyden pitkittyminen heikensi selvästi yksilön hyvinvointia ja vertaistuen merkitys korostui työttömyyden pitkittyessä. Tutkimuksesta ilmeni, että julkiset työvoimapalvelut eivät tue riittävästi korkeasti koulutettuja työttömiä. Tukipalveluja tulisi kehittää vastaamaan paremmin muuttuneiden työmarkkinoiden vaateita, sillä työmarkkinoiden muutokset haastavat urien uudenlaiseen tarkasteluun.

The goal of this thesis is to define and validate a software engineering approach for the development of a distributed system for the modeling of composite materials, based on the analysis of various existing software development methods. We reviewed the main features of: (1) software engineering methodologies; (2) distributed system characteristics and their effect on software development; (3) composite materials modeling activities and the requirements for the software development. Using the design science as a research methodology, the distributed system for creating models of composite materials is created and evaluated. Empirical experiments which we conducted showed good convergence of modeled and real processes. During the study, we paid attention to the matter of complexity and importance of distributed system and a deep understanding of modern software engineering methods and tools.
