One of the main industries which form the basis of Russian Economical structure is oil and gas. This industry is also playing a significant role for CIS countries. Oil and gas industry is developing intensively attracting foreign investments. This situation is providing sustainable development of machinery production for hazardous areas. Operating in oil and gas areas is always related with occurrence of explosion gas atmospheres. Machines for hazardous areas must be furnished with additional protection of different types. Explosion protection is regulated with standards according to which equipment must be manufactured. In Russia and CIS countries explosion-proof equipment must be constructed in compliance with GOST standards. To confirm that equipment is manufactured according to standards’ requirements and is safe and reliable it must undergo the approval procedure. Certification in Russia is governed by Federal Laws and legislation. Each CIS country has its own approval certificates and permissions for operating in hazardous areas.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli kartoittaa kunnossapidon nykytilaa metsäteollisuuden voimalaitoksissa. Asiaa selvitettiin kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena, jossa haastateltiin kunnossapidon vastuuhenkilöitä. Tutkimuksen kohteeksi valittiin kahdeksan erikokoista voimalaitosta, jotka edustivat suurimpia Suomessa toimivia metsäteollisuuden konserneja. Työssä käsiteltiin tiedon ja materiaalin hallintaa, kunnossapidon suunnittelua ja organisointia sekä taloudellisia vaikutuksia. Tulokset on esitetty yleisessä muodossa ilman laitoskohtaista erittelyä. Metsäteollisuus toimii hyvin globaaleilla markkinoilla, joilla kilpailu on kiristynyt viime vuosina. Tehokkuutta on pyritty parantamaan kaikilla sektoreilla ja tämä näkyy muutoksena monilla kunnossapidon osa alueilla. Merkittävä muutos oli kunnossapitotoimintojen eriyttäminen omaksi yhtiöksi, joka oli toteutettu yhtiön strategisena valintana puolella tehtaista. Tutkimuksessa kävi myös ilmi, että henkilökunnan koulutukseen panostamalla tietojärjestelmiä voidaan hyödyntää tehokkaammin. Varastoon sidotun pääoman pienentäminen on merkinnyt materiaalilogistiikan tärkeyden korostumista tavoiteltaessa parempaa käyttövarmuutta. Kun lisäksi teollisuuden investointien määrät ovat viime vuosina laskeneet, on kunnossapidon ja etenkin sen suunnittelun rooli kasvanut.

The target of the thesis was to find out has the decision to outsource part of Filtronic LK warehouse function been profitable. Furthermore, another thesis target was to demonstrate current logistics processes between TPLP and company and find out the targets for developing these processes. The decision to outsource part of logistical funtions have been profitable during the first business year. Partnership includes always business risks. Risk increases high asset specific investments. In the other hand investment to partnership increases mutual trust and commitment between parties. By developing partnership risks and opportunitic behaviour can be decreased. The potential of managing material and data flows between logistic service provider and company observed. By analyzing inventory effiency were highlighted the need for decreasing the capital invested to inventories. The recommendations for managing outsourced logistical funtions were established such as improving partnership, process development, performance measurement and invoice checking.

This research was motivated by the need to examine the potential application areas of process intensification technologies in Neste Oil Oyj. According to the company’s interest membrane reactor technology was chosen and applicability of this technology in refining industry was investigated. Moreover, Neste Oil suggested a project which is related to the CO2 capture from FCC unit flue gas stream. The flowrate of the flue gas is 180t/h and consist of approximately 14% by volume CO2. Membrane based absorption process (membrane contactor) was chosen as a potential technique to model CO2 capture from fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit effluent. In the design of membrane contactor, a mathematical model was developed to describe CO2 absorption from a gas mixture using monoethanole amine (MEA) aqueous solution. According to the results of literature survey, in the hollow fiber contactor for laminar flow conditions approximately 99 % percent of CO2 can be removed by using a 20 cm in length polyvinylidene fluoride (PDVF) membrane. Furthermore, the design of whole process was performed by using PRO/II simulation software and the CO2 removal efficiency of the whole process obtained as 97 %. The technical and economical comparisons among existing MEA absorption processes were performed to determine the advantages and disadvantages of membrane contactor technology.

In this report, we summarize results of our part of the ÄLYKOP-project on customer value creation in the intersection of the health care, ICT, forest and energy industries. The research directs to describe how industry transformation and convergence create new possibilities, business opportunities and even new industries.The report consists of findings which are presented former in academic publications. The publication discusses on customer value, service provision and resource basis of the novel concepts through multiple theorethical frameworks. The report is divided into three maim sections which are theoretical background, discussion on health care industry and evaluations regarding novel smart home concepts. Transaction cost economics and Resource- Based view on the firm provides the theoretical basis to analyze the prescribed phenomena. The health care industry analysis describes the most important changes in the demand conditions of health care services, and explores the features that are likely to open new business opportunities for a solution provider. The third part of the report on the smart home business provides illustrations few potential concepts that can be considered to provide solutions to economical problems which arise from aging of population. The results provide several recommendations for the smart home platform developers in public and private sectors. By the analysis, public organizations dominate service provision and private markets are emergent state at present. We argue that public-private partnerships are nececssary for creating key suppliers. Indeed, paying attion on appropriate regulation, service specifications and technology standards would foster diffusion of new services. The dynamics of the service provision networks is driven by need for new capabiltities which are required for adapting business concepts to new competitive situation. Finally, the smart home framework revealed links between conventionally distant business areas such as health care and energy distribution. The platform integrates functionalities different for purposes which however apply same resource basis.

This master’s thesis gives out the real situation of the China welding industry and factories nowadays in different geographical areas, in order to inform the Finnish companies who have the willing to find a Chinese welding subcontractor a proper and correct selection concept by analyzing and supplying the information of different scale and form welding factories in different Chinese areas. The first section of this thesis gives out the general situation about the co-operation between China and Finland in the welding industry, also includes the general introduction of the Chinese welding industry. The second section gives out the geographical compartmentalization result of Chinese welding industry, which is where and how many areas will be studied in this thesis. The main body of this thesis is the real information of welding productivity, welding cost, and welding quality in China. All the information was collected from real factories in China by the author. The last section of this thesis is the improvements to the Chinese welding factories that have the willing to become a subcontractor, and the suggestions to the Finnish companies who may find a Chinese welding factory as their subcontractor in future.

The twin-city model has found to increase economical activity and well-being. The similar economical, social and cultural background of Finland and Estonia as well as the EU integration give good preconditions to create a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The relatively long distance between Helsinki and Tallinn is challenging. Therefore, good transport infrastructure and functioning connections are required to form a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The connections between these cities can be considered also in broader perspective than only from the viewpoint of the twin-city concept. New markets areas have been emerged in Europe due to collapse of planned economy and integration of Europe. Also the transport routes to the markets are changing. The Hel-sinki-Tallinn sea route can be considered as a fast route to the new markets in the Cen-tral and Eastern Europe. The Helsinki-Tallinn sea route is also a potential route to the Western European markets. This study provides an analysis of transport and cargo flows between Finland and Esto-nia for regional and local planners. The main purpose of the study is to clarify the pre-sent situation of the seaborne cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and how the cargo flows will develop in the future. The study focuses on the following thematic enti-ties: the Finnish and Estonian seaborne transport system and cargo flows, the structure and volume of the cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route, the hinterland cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and the transport methods used on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. The study was carried out as a desk research, a statistical analysis and an inter-view study during the spring–autumn 2011. The study reveals that during the period 2002–2010 the volume of the seaborne cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia has increased significantly while the trend of the trade volume between Finland and Estonia has remained nearly constant. This indicates that the route via Estonia is increasingly used in the Finnish foreign trade. Because the ports of Helsinki and Tallinn are the main ports in the cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia, the role of the Helsinki-Tallinn route as a sea leg in the hinterland connections of Finland has increased. The growth of the cargo volume on the Helsinki-Tallinn route was estimated to continue on the annual level of 10 % during the next couple of years. In the long run the growth of the cargo volumes depends on the economical and indus-trial development of the former Eastern European countries. If the IMO’s sulphur regu-lations will come in force, the Helsinki-Tallinn route will become one of the main routes also to the Western European markets, besides of the route via Sweden. The study also shows that the fast and reliable connections year round on the Helsinki-Tallinn route have made it possible for service and logistics companies to reconsider their logistics strategies in a new way in the both side of the Gulf of Finland. Anyway, the ropax concept is seen as the only economical profitable solution on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because cargo and passenger traffic are supporting each other. The trucks (vehicle combinations) will remain the main mode of transport on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because general cargo is the main commodity on the route. IMO’s sulphur regula-tions and the changes in the structure of the Finnish industry may create prerequisites for rail road transport in the hinterland connections of Finland. Taloudellisesti tärkeiden metallien varannot ja tuotanto eivät ole jakautuneet tasaisesti. Maantieteelliset alueet, joilla ei ole omia varantoja ovat riippuvaisia muualta tuoduista raaka-aineista. Euroopan komissio ja USA:n energiaministeriö ovat luokitelleet tietyt metallit kriittisiksi niiden taloudellisen merkittävyyden ja saatavuuteen liittyvien epävarmuustekijöiden johdosta. Tällaisten metallien saatavuutta voitaisiin mahdollisesti parantaa lisäämällä niiden talteenottoa jätteistä. Tutkimuksessa kartoitettiin Euroopan komission kriittiseksi luokittelemien metallien pitoisuuksia eräissä jätevirroissa. Kartoitetut jätteet olivat teollisissa poltto-prosesseissa syntyneitä polttojätteitä, prosessiteollisuuden jätesakkoja ja sähkö- ja elektroniikkajätteitä. Kartoituksen perusteella valittiin lupaavimmat jätteet ja suoritettiin niille talteenottokokeita. Talteenottokokeita suoritettiin kolmelle jätteelle. Yhdestä jätesakasta liuotettiin indiumia rikki- ja suolahapoilla. Kahden eri polttojätteen seoksesta liuotettiin galliumia rikkihapolla. Käytettyjen loisteputkien käsittelyprosessista peräisin olleesta sakasta liuotettiin maametalleja rikki- ja suolahapoilla sekä rikki- ja typpihapon seoksella. Indium liukeni heikosti (korkeintaan 25 %) huoneenlämmössä rikkihapolla. Suolahapolla se liukeni paremmin (68 %). Polttojätteen liuotuskokeissa galliumin talteenottoasteen todettiin riippuvan käytetyn liuottimen määrästä. Loisteputkijätesakasta liukeni yttriumia ja europiumia kaikilla käytetyillä happoliuoksilla noin 70–100 %. Käytetyillä happokonsentraatioilla ei havaittu suuria eroja yttriumin ja europiumin liukoisuuksissa. Näitä metalleja voitaisiin mahdollisesti ottaa talteen tämän tyyppisestä sakasta liuottamalla ne happoliuoksella ja saostamalla oksalaattina. Tarvittaessa liuokset voitaisiin puhdistaa tai metallit erottaa toisistaan neste–nesteuutolla, joka on tärkein maametallien tuotantoon käytetty hydrometallurginen menetelmä.

Sähkönkulutuksen kasvaessa jakeluverkossa syntyy yhä enemmän jännitteenalenemia, jotka ylittävät sähkön laatustandardin asettamat raja-arvot. Jännitteenalenemista kärsivät etenkin syrjäseuduilla asuvat ihmiset, joiden käyttökohteet sijaitsevat kaukana jakelumuuntajasta. Perinteinen tapa on ollut kasvattaa syöttävän jakelukaapelin poikkipinta-alaa ja vaihtaa jakelumuuntaja suurempaan ongelman ratkaisemiseksi, mutta investointi on kuitenkin kallis eikä välttämättä maksa itseään koskaan takaisin. On myös mahdollista, että aiempaa suuremman muuntajan tyhjäkäyntihäviöillä on huonontava vaikutus järjestelmän energiatehokkuuteen. Tällöin voi olla kokonaistaloudellisesti kannattavampaa liittää sähköverkkoon laite, jolla voidaan korjata jännitteenalenemia. Diplomityössä tutkitaan säästömuuntajaan perustuvaa jännitteenkorotinta, jolla voidaan vähentää jakeluverkon jännitteenalenemien aiheuttamia haittoja. Työssä tutkitaan laitteen eri kytkintopologioita sekä niiden ohjausmenetelmiä, joilla voidaan muuttaa säästömuuntajan käämikierrosmääriä sen ollessa kuormitettuna.

Unlike their counterparts in Europe and America, the citizen organizations acting for the well-being of animals in Japan have not received scholarly attention. In this research, I explore the activities of twelve Japanese pro-animal organizations in Tokyo and Kansai area from the perspective of social movement and civil society studies. The concept of a ‘pro-animal organization’ is used to refer generally to the collectives promoting animal well-being. By using the collective action frame analysis and the three core framing tasks – diagnostic, prognostic, and motivational – as the primarily analytical tools, I explore the grievances, tactics, motivational means, constructions of agency and identity as well as framing of civil society articulated in the newsletters and the interviews of the twelve organizations I interviewed in Japan in 2010. As the frame construction is always done in relation to the social and political context, I study how the organizations construct their roles as civil society actors in relation to other actors, such as the state, and the idea of citizen activism. The deficiencies in the animal welfare law and lack of knowledge among the public are identified as the main grievances. The primary tactic to overcome these problems was to educate and inform the citizens and authorities, because most organizations lack the channels to influence politically. The audiences were mostly portrayed as either ignorant bystanders or potential adherents. In order to motivate people to join their cause and to enforce the motivation within the organization, the organizations emphasized their uniqueness, proved their efficiency, claimed credit and celebrated even small improvements. The organizations tended to create three different roles for citizen pro-organizations in civil society: reactive, apolitical and emphatic animal lovers concentrating on saving individual animals, proactive, educative bridge-builders seeking to establish equal collaborative relations with authorities, and corrective, supervising watchdogs demanding change in delinquencies offending animal rights. Based on the results of this research, I suggest that by studying how and why the different relations between civil society and the governing actors of the state are constructed, a more versatile approach to citizens’ activism in its context can be achieved.

Tällä tutkimuksella annetaan työkaluja pienille mikrotason asennusyrityksille heidän tiellään tuottavampaan ja tehokkaampaan yritystoimintaan. Kehitysmenetelmäksi on valittu verkostoituminen, joka tapahtuu alueellisten toimijoiden kesken ja on lähinnä horisontaalista. Tutkimuksen kohderyhmänä on sähkö-, tele- ja antenniasennusyrittäjät tai alalle aikovat uudet yrittäjät. Luotu malli on sovelias lähes kaikille kiinteistöjen teknisen kunnossapidon alalla toimiville mikroyrityksille. Tutkimuksen teoreettisessa osassa käsitellään verkostoyrittäjyyden perusteita ja syventävästi esitetyn case-mallin mukaista verkostotoiminnan erityispiirteitä. Empiirinen osa koostuu sähköisesti toteutetusta internetpohjaisesta kysely- tutkimuksesta, jonka kohteena on pienet sähkö-, tele- ja antenniasennusyritykset. Kyselytutkimus on toteutettu yhteistyössä alan urakointiliittojen (STUL ry ja SANT ry) kanssa. Kysely noudattaa samoja aihealueita kuin professori Asko Miettisen sähköurakointialalle 1988 toteuttaman raportin SÄHKÖURAKOINTI 2000 kyselylomake pidemmän tarkastelujänteen saamiseksi. Kysely selvittää yritysten nykytilaa ja näkemyksiä alan lähitulevaisuudesta. Empiiristä osaa tuetaan voimakkaasti case- esityksin, jotka pohjautuvat kirjoittajan 40 vuoden yrittäjäkokemukseen tällä alalla, joka on ollut voimakkaastikin lähinnä vertikaalisesti verkottunut. Tutkimus osoittaa, että alan taloudellinen ja toiminnallinenkin kehitys on polkenut paikallaan viimeiset vuosikymmenet, vaikka alan teknologiakehitys on ollut tarkasteluajanjaksona varsin merkittävää. Alan yritysten heikohkojen resurssien vuoks entistä voimakkaampi alueellinen yhteistyö verkostoitumalla on mahdollisuus tuottavampaan yritystoimintaan ja arvontuottoon yritykselle sekä luo mahdollisuuden myös suuntautumisen uusille kehittyneimmille teknologian alueille.
