PURPOSE: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is considered a representative outcome in the evaluation of chronic disease management initiatives emphasizing patient-centered care. We evaluated the association between receipt of processes-of-care (PoC) for diabetes and HRQoL. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used self-reported data from non-institutionalized adults with diabetes in a Swiss canton. Outcomes were the physical/mental composites of the short form health survey 12 (SF-12) physical composite score, mental composite score (PCS, MCS) and the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (ADDQoL). Main exposure variables were receipt of six PoC for diabetes in the past 12 months, and the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) score. We performed linear regressions to examine the association between PoC, PACIC and the three composites of HRQoL. RESULTS: Mean age of the 519 patients was 64.5 years (SD 11.3); 60% were male, 87% reported type 2 or undetermined diabetes and 48% had diabetes for over 10 years. Mean HRQoL scores were SF-12 PCS: 43.4 (SD 10.5), SF-12 MCS: 47.0 (SD 11.2) and ADDQoL: -1.6 (SD 1.6). In adjusted models including all six PoC simultaneously, receipt of influenza vaccine was associated with lower ADDQoL (β=-0.4, p≤0.01) and foot examination was negatively associated with SF-12 PCS (β=-1.8, p≤0.05). There was no association or trend towards a negative association when these PoC were reported as combined measures. PACIC score was associated only with the SF-12 MCS (β=1.6, p≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: PoC for diabetes did not show a consistent association with HRQoL in a cross-sectional analysis. This may represent an effect lag time between time of process received and health-related quality of life. Further research is needed to study this complex phenomenon.

Background: Chronic disease management initiatives emphasize patient-centered care, and quality of life (QoL) is increasingly considered a representative outcome in that context. In this study we evaluated the association between receipt of processes of diabetic care and QoL. Methods: This cross-sectional population-based study (2011) used self-reported data from non-institutionalized, adult diabetics, recruited from randomly selected community pharmacies in Vaud. Outcomes included the physical and mental composites of the SF-36 (PCS, MCS) and the disease-specific Audit of Diabetes-Dependent QoL (ADDQoL). Main exposure variables were receipt of six diabetes processes-of care in the past 12 months. We also evaluated whether the association between care received and QoL was congruent with the chronic care model, when assessed by the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC). We used linear regressions to examine the association between process measures and the three composites of health-related QoL. Analyses were adjusted for age, gender, socioeconomic status, living companion, BMI, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, co-morbidities and diabetes mellitus (DM) characteristics (type, insulin use, complications, duration). Results: Mean age of the 519 diabetic patients was 64.4 years (SD 11.3), 60% were male and 73% had a living companion; 87% reported type 2 DM, half of respondents required insulin treatment, 48% had at least one DM complication, and 48% had DM over 10 years. Crude overall mean QoL scores were PCS: 43.4 (SD 10.5), MCS: 47.0 (SD 11.2) and ADDQoL: -1.56 (SD 1.6). In bivariate analyses, patients who received the influenza vaccine versus those who did not, had lower ADDQoL and PCS scores; there were no other indicator differences. In adjusted models including all processes, receipt of influenza vaccine was associated with lower ADDQoL (β= - 0.41, p=.01); there were no other associations between process indicators and QoL composites. There was no process association even when these were reported as combined measures of processes of care. PACIC score was associated only with the MCS (β= 1.57, p=.004). Conclusions: Process indicators for diabetes care did not show an association with QoL. This may represent an effect lag time between time of process received and quality of life; or that treatment may be related with inconvenience and patient worry. Further research is needed to explore these unexpected findings.

Differential distribution and phosphorylation of tau proteins were studied in developing kitten brain by using several antibodies, and was compared to phosphorylation in Alzheimer's disease. Several antibodies demonstrated the presence of phosphorylated tau proteins during kitten brain development and identified pathological structures in human brain tissue. Antibody AD2, recognized tau in kittens and adult cats, but reacted in Alzheimer's tissue only with a pathological tau form. Antibody AT8 was prominent in developing kitten neurons and was found in axons and dendrites. After the first postnatal month this phosphorylation type disappeared from axons. Furthermore, dephosphorylation of kitten tau with alkaline phosphatase abolished immunoreactivity of AT8, but not that of AD2, pointing to a protection of the AD2 epitope in cats. Tau proteins during early cat brain development are phosphorylated at several sites that are also phosphorylated in paired helical filaments during Alzheimer's disease. In either event, phosphorylation of tau may play a crucial role to modulate microtubule dynamics, contributing to increased microtubule instability and promoting growth of processes during neuronal development or changing dynamic properties of the cytoskeleton and contributing to the formation of pathological structures in neurodegenerative diseases.

An acute attack of gout is a paradigm of acute sterile inflammation, as opposed to pyogenic inflammation. Recent studies suggest that the triggering of IL-1beta release from leucocytes lies at the heart of a cascade of processes that involves multiple cytokines and mediators. The NLRP3 inflammasome appears to have a specific role in this regard, but the biochemical events leading to its activation are still not well understood. We review the known mechanisms that underlie the inflammatory process triggered by urate crystals and suggest areas that require further research.

Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) conjugation affects a broad range of processes in plants, including growth, flower initiation, pathogen defense, and responses to abiotic stress. Here, we investigate in vivo and in vitro a SUMO conjugating enzyme with a Cys to Ser change in the active site, and show that it has a dominant negative effect. In planta expression significantly perturbs normal development, leading to growth retardation, early flowering and gene expression changes. We suggest that the mutant protein can serve as a probe to investigate sumoylation, also in plants for which poor genetic infrastructure precludes analysis via loss-of-function mutants.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) among the young is a rare and devastating event, but its exact incidence in many countries remains unknown. An autopsy is recommended in every case because some of the cardiac pathologies may have a genetic origin, which can have an impact on the living family members. The aims of this retrospective study completed in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland were to determine both the incidence of SCD and the autopsy rate for individuals from 5 to 39 years of age. METHODS: The study was conducted from 2000 to 2007 on the basis of official statistics and analysis of the International Classification of Diseases codes for potential SCDs and other deaths that might have been due to cardiac disease. RESULTS: During the 8 year study period there was an average of 292'546 persons aged 5-39 and there were a total of 1122 deaths, certified as potential SCDs in 3.6% of cases. The calculated incidence is 1.71/100'000 person-years (2.73 for men and 0.69 for women). If all possible cases of SCD (unexplained deaths, drowning, traffic accidents, etc.) are included, the incidence increases to 13.67/100'000 person-years. However, the quality of the officially available data was insufficient to provide an accurate incidence of SCD as well as autopsy rates. The presumed autopsy rate of sudden deaths classified as diseases of the circulatory system is 47.5%. For deaths of unknown cause (11.1% of the deaths), the autopsy was conducted in 13.7% of the cases according to codified data. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of presumed SCD in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, is comparable to the data published in the literature for other geographic regions but may be underestimated as it does not take into account other potential SCDs, as unexplained deaths. Increasing the autopsy rate of SCD in the young, better management of information obtained from autopsies as well developing of structured registry could improve the reliability of the statistical data, optimize the diagnostic procedures, and the preventive measures for the family members.

Abstract: The centrosome is the major microtubule organizing center (MTOC) of most animal cells. As such, it is essential for a number of processes, including polarized secretion or bipolar spindle assembly. Hence, centrosome number needs to be controlled precisely in coordination with DNA replication. Cells early in the cell cycle contain one centrosome that duplicates during S-phase to give rise to two centrosomes that organize a bipolar spindle during mitosis. A failure in this process is likely to engage the spindle assembly checkpoint and threaten genome stability. Despite its importance for normal and uncontrolled proliferation the mechanisms underlying centrosome duplication are still unclear. The Caenorhabditis elegans embryo is well suited to study the mechanisms of centrosome duplication. It allows for the analysis of cellular processes with high temporal and spatial resolution. Gene identification and inactivation techniques are very powerful and a wide set of mutant and transgenic strains facilitates analysis. My thesis project consisted of characterizing three sas-genes: sas-4, sas-5 and sas-¬6. Embryos lacking these genes fail to form a bipolar spindle, hence their name (spindle assembly). I established that sas-4(RNAi) and sas-6(RNAi) embryos do not form daughter centrioles and thus do not duplicate their centrosomes. Furthermore, I showed that both proteins localize to the cytoplasm and are strikingly enriched at centrioles throughout the cell cycle. By performing fluorescent recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) experiments and differentially labeling centrioles, I established that both proteins are recruited to centrioles once per cell cycle when daughter centrioles form. In contrast, SAS-5, PLK-1 and SPD-2 shuttle permanently between the cytoplasm and centrioles. By showing that SAS-5 and SAS-6 interact in vivo, I established a functional relationship between the proteins. Testing the putative human homologue of SAS-6 (HsSAS-6) and a distant relative of SAS-4 (CPAP), I was able to show that these proteins are required for centrosome duplication in human cells. In addition I found that overexpression of GFP¬HsSAS-6 leads to formation of extra centrosomes. In conclusion, we identified and gained important insights into proteins required for centrosome duplication in C. elegans and in human cells. Thus, our work contributes to further elucidate an important step of cell division in normal and malignant tissues. Eventually, this may allow for the development of novel diagnostic or therapeutic reagents to treat cancer patients.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. MiRNAs are implicated in various biological processes associated with obesity, including adipocyte differentiation and lipid metabolism. We used a neuronal-specific inhibition of miRNA maturation in adult mice to study the consequences of miRNA loss on obesity development. Camk2a-CreERT2 (Cre+) and floxed Dicer (Dicerlox/lox) mice were crossed to generate tamoxifen-inducible conditional Dicer knockouts (cKO). Vehicle- and/or tamoxifen-injected Cre+;Dicerlox/lox and Cre+;Dicer+/+ served as controls. Four cohorts were used to a) measure body composition, b) follow food intake and body weight dynamics, c) evaluate basal metabolism and effects of food deprivation, and d) assess the brain transcriptome consequences of miRNA loss. cKO mice developed severe obesity and gained 18 g extra weight over the 5 weeks following tamoxifen injection, mainly due to increased fat mass. This phenotype was highly reproducible and observed in all 38 cKO mice recorded and in none of the controls, excluding possible effects of tamoxifen or the non-induced transgene. Development of obesity was concomitant with hyperphagia, increased food efficiency, and decreased activity. Surprisingly, after reaching maximum body weight, obese cKO mice spontaneously started losing weight as rapidly as it was gained. Weight loss was accompanied by lowered O2-consumption and respiratory-exchange ratio. Brain transcriptome analyses in obese mice identified several obesity-related pathways (e.g. leptin, somatostatin, and nemo-like kinase signaling), as well as genes involved in feeding and appetite (e.g. Pmch, Neurotensin) and in metabolism (e.g. Bmp4, Bmp7, Ptger1, Cox7a1). A gene cluster with anti-correlated expression in the cerebral cortex of post-obese compared to obese mice was enriched for synaptic plasticity pathways. While other studies have identified a role for miRNAs in obesity, we here present a unique model that allows for the study of processes involved in reversing obesity. Moreover, our study identified the cortex as a brain area important for body weight homeostasis.

Neurofilaments are typical structures of the neuronal cytoskeleton and participate in the formation and stabilization of the axonal and dendritic architecture. In this study, we have characterized a murine monoclonal antibody, FNP7, that is directed against the medium-sized neurofilament subunit NF-M. This antibody identifies a subset of neurons in the cerebral cortex of various species including human and in organotypic cultures of rat cortex. In the neocortex of all species examined, the antibody labels pyramidal cells in layers III, V, and VI, with a distinctive laminar distribution between architectonic boundaries. In comparison with other antibodies directed against NF-M, the FNP7 antibody identifies on blots two forms of NF-M that appear relatively late during development, at the time when dynamic growth of processes changes to the stabilization of the formed processes. Dephosphorylation with alkaline phosphatase unmasks the site, making it detectable for the FNP7 antibody. The late appearance suggests that the site is present during early development in phosphorylated form and with increasing maturation becomes dephosphorylated, mainly in dendrites. This event may relate to changes in cytoskeleton stability in a late phase of dendritic maturation. Furthermore, mainly corticofugal projections and only few callosal axons are stained, suggesting a differential phosphorylation in a subset of axons. The antibody provides a useful marker to study subsets of pyramidal cells in vivo, in vitro, and under experimental conditions.

THESIS ABSTRACT Low-pressure anatexis of basic dykes gave rise to unusual, zebra-like migmatites, in the contact metamorphic aureoles of two layered gabbro-pyroxenite intrusions, PXl and PX2, in the root zone of an ocean island, Fuerteventura Basal Complex (Canary Islands). This thesis focuses on the understanding of processes attributing to the partial melting and formation of these migmatites, characterised by a dense network of closely spaced, millimetre-wide leucocratic segregations with perfectly preserved igneous textures. The presence of fluids are required to decrease the solidus of basic igneous lithologies, to allow partial melting in such aloes-pressure (1-2 kb) environment. An oxygen isotope study was thus carried out on dykes inside and beyond the PX2 aureole, in order to decipher the nature and origin of such fluids. Low or negative δ18O values were obtained for whole rocks and mineral-separates, decreasing towards the contact, with the intrusion itself retaining fairly high values. This trend has been attributed to the advection of meteoric water during magma emplacement, with increasing fluid/rock ratios (higher dyke intensities towards the intrusion acting as fluid-pathways) and higher temperatures promoting increasing exchange during recrystallisation. A comparison of whole rock and mineral major- and trace- element data allowed the redistribution of elements .between different mineral phases and generations, during contact metamorphism and partial melting to be assessed. Certain trace-elements, e.g. Zr, Hf, Y, and REEs, were internally redistributed during contact metamorphic recrystallisation, causing- the enrichment of neocrystallised diopsides compared to relict phenocrysts. This has been assigned to the liberation of trace elements on the breakdown of primary minerals, kaersutite and sphene, on entering the thermal aureole. Major and trace element compositions of minerals in migmatite melanosomes and leucosomes are almost identical, pointing to a syn- or post- solidus reequilibration on cooling of the migmatite terrain. The mineralogical, textural and geochemical evolution of dykes in a contact metamorphic aureole, is recorded around an apophysis of the PX1 intrusion, where there is evidence of incipient partial melting. Hydrothermal mineral pseudomorphs in the outer parts of the aureole are progressively replaced by dry mineral assemblages, with increasingly recrystallised diopside and evidence of partial melting -the extent of which varies from one lithology to another. The appearance of more mafic lithologies towards the intrusion, with lower whole rock SiO2 and mobile element abundances, e.g. Rb, Cs, K, has been explained by the migration and accumulation of feldspathic material into leucosomes outside the samples. A micro-structural study of leucosomes and leucocratic pods, with the aid of high-resolution X-ray computed micro-tomography (HRXµCT), allowing the visualization and quantification of shapes and orientations, was carried out in order to better understand the processes of melt segregation in the PX1 aureole. Leucocratic pods, representing former amygdales, are considered as natural strain ellipsoids. Their short axes are oriented perpendicular to leucosome planes, which sub-parallel the intrusive contact. Leucosomes thus effectively represent foliation planes. This implies that the direction of maximum shortening, during migmatisation, was perpendicular to the orientation of leucosomes, contradicting earlier models that suggest leucosomes represent tension veins.

Cardiac ventricular morphogenesis is a key developmental stage during which the ventricles grow considerably in size, but the transcriptional pathways controlling this process remains poorly understood. 14-3-3_ is a member of a conserved protein family that regulates a wide range of processes such as transcription, apoptosis and proliferation by binding to the phospho-serine/threonine residues of its target proteins. We found that deletion of the Ywhae gene (encoding 14-3-3_) in mice leads to abnormal ventricular morphogenesis and an embryonic cardiomyopathy (Cieslik KA et al, Circ. Res. 2008, abstract). Interestingly, we recently showed in cultured cells that the Ywhae gene is regulated directly by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor _ (PPAR_) (Brunelli L et al, Circ. Res. 2007), a ligand-inducible nuclear receptor that controls energy metabolism and development. Postnatal cardiac-specific deletion of the Ppard gene in mice causes a lethal dilated cardiomyopathy, but it is still unknown whether PPAR_ regulates genes involved in heart development. We hypothesized that the expression of the Ywhae gene is responsive to PPAR_ during heart development. We confirmed that PPAR_ is expressed in the heart during development, and found higher expression at E10.5 compared to later gestational ages. We showed by immunofluorescence that a PPAR_ agonist (50 _M L-165,041 for 24 hr) upregulates 14-3-3_ in primary cardiomyocytes. We showed that when P19CL6 cells are driven towards cardiomyocyte lineage by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 14-3-3_ levels increase 4-fold, while L-165,041 treatment increases levels by an additional 50%. Based on previous work in mice (Leibowitz MD et al, FEBS Lett. 2000; Letavernier E et al, J. Am. Soc. Nephrol. 2005), we tested the response of Ywhae to PPAR_ in vivo . We fed 30 mg/kg/day L-165,041 to 14-3-3__/_ adult pregnant mice for 3 days starting at E9.5 and assessed Ywhae mRNA levels in embryonic hearts at E12.5. Baseline mRNA levels in Ywhae_/_ hearts were double that of Ywhae_/ hearts, while L-165,041 upregulated Ywhae mRNA levels in both Ywhae_/_ and Ywhae_/ hearts by 65%. These results indicate that Ywhae responds to PPAR_ in vivo, and suggest that PPAR_ regulates Ywhae during ventricular morphogenesis.

DNA methylation is involved in a diversity of processes in bacteria, including maintenance of genome integrity and regulation of gene expression. Here, using Caulobacter crescentus as a model, we exploit genome-wide experimental methods to uncover the functions of CcrM, a DNA methyltransferase conserved in most Alphaproteobacteria. Using single molecule sequencing, we provide evidence that most CcrM target motifs (GANTC) switch from a fully methylated to a hemi-methylated state when they are replicated, and back to a fully methylated state at the onset of cell division. We show that DNA methylation by CcrM is not required for the control of the initiation of chromosome replication or for DNA mismatch repair. By contrast, our transcriptome analysis shows that >10% of the genes are misexpressed in cells lacking or constitutively over-expressing CcrM. Strikingly, GANTC methylation is needed for the efficient transcription of dozens of genes that are essential for cell cycle progression, in particular for DNA metabolism and cell division. Many of them are controlled by promoters methylated by CcrM and co-regulated by other global cell cycle regulators, demonstrating an extensive cross talk between DNA methylation and the complex regulatory network that controls the cell cycle of C. crescentus and, presumably, of many other Alphaproteobacteria.

Flood effectiveness observations imply that two families of processes describe the formation of debris flow volume. One is related to the rainfall?erosion relationship, and can be seen as a gradual process, and one is related to additional geological/geotechnical events, those named hereafter extraordinary events. In order to discuss the hypothesis of coexistence of two modes of volume formation, some methodologies are applied. Firstly, classical approaches consisting in relating volume to catchments characteristics are considered. These approaches raise questions about the quality of the data rather than providing answers concerning the controlling processes. Secondly, we consider statistical approaches (cumulative number of events distribution and cluster analysis) and these suggest the possibility of having two distinct families of processes. However the quantitative evaluation of the threshold differs from the one that could be obtained from the first approach, but they all agree in the sense of the coexistence of two families of events. Thirdly, a conceptual model is built exploring how and why debris flow volume in alpine catchments changes with time. Depending on the initial condition (sediment production), the model shows that large debris flows (i.e. with important volume) are observed in the beginning period, before a steady-state is reached. During this second period debris flow volume such as is observed in the beginning period is not observed again. Integrating the results of the three approaches, two case studies are presented showing: (1) the possibility to observe in a catchment large volumes that will never happen again due to a drastic decrease in the sediment availability, supporting its difference from gradual erosion processes; (2) that following a rejuvenation of the sediment storage (by a rock avalanche) the magnitude?frequency relationship of a torrent can be differentiated into two phases, the beginning one with large and frequent debris flow and a later one with debris flow less intense and frequent, supporting the results of the conceptual model. Although the results obtained cannot identify a clear threshold between the two families of processes, they show that some debris flows can be seen as pulse of sediment differing from that expected from gradual erosion.

ABSTRACTNeedle fibre calcite (NFC) is one of the most widespread habits of pedogenic calcite. It is a monocrystal of calcite, in the shape of a needle, with a diameter of one micron and a length between 4 and 103 times its width. NFC occurs in soils with different macroscopic and microscopic morphologies. Macroscopically, two main habits of NFC exist: "cotton ball'Mike clusters and as "powder" coating on pebbles inside the soil. It can also act as nucleation sites for precipitation of calcite cements of purely physicochemical origin (LCC - Late Calcitic Cement). Although many studies have been conducted on needle fibre calcite, its origin remains a subject of debate. The NFC having never been reproduced in the laboratory whatever the considered approach, the processes responsible for its precipitation as a so particular morphology remain unexplained. The shift between the length orientation of the needle crystal and the normal axis of calcite growth (c-axis) is also unresolved.Samples taken in two soils observed in quarries (Villiers and Savagnier) in the Swiss Jura Mountains are used to investigate the processes involved in the formation of these calcite crystals in pedogenic environments. Three groups of microscopic morphologies are distinguished: (i) simple needles (SN), (ii) simple needles with overgrowths (SNO), and (iii) simple needles with nanofibres (SNN), nanofibres being either organic or mineral in nature. These groups correspond to different stages in the formation and evolution of NFC.Comparison of carbon and oxygen isotope compositions of NFC with LCC, in relationship with the composition of the carbonate host rock (CHR), and the carbon isotope signature of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the soil waters, indicates that both NFC and LCC are precipitated in isotopic equilibrium with the soil solution. Similar Ô13C and Ô180 values of the elongated NFC and the rhombohedral calcite crystals of the LCC suggest that the precipitation of these different calcite habits is not due to changes in physicochemical conditions. The growth of NFC crystals inside an organic mould formed by the fungal hyphae could explain the formation of calcite ciystals in the shape of a needle in isotopic equilibrium with the local environment.Strontium and calcium isotope compositions of the three microscopic groups of NFC and LCC were also studied, in order to determine the origin of calcium (Ca2+) entrapped in the calcite lattice and to elucidate the processes responsible for the precipitation of NFC. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the SN is closer to the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of the carbonate host rock than the LCC, SNO, and SNN. This could be another clue for the formation of SN inside fungal hyphae, because fungi are known to dissolve the rocks to release and translocate through their hyphae nutrients necessary for their growth. SN and SNN are depleted in Sr and enriched in ^Ca compared to the LCC. In the context of Villiers quarry, where the two ciystal shapes precipitate at similar temperature (in a range of 0,6°C), such variations are the result of a slower precipitation rate of NFC, which is inconsistent with a purely physicochemically precipitated elongate crystal. Finally, NFC is enriched in major and trace elements (i.e. Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mo) compared to the LCC. This enrichment is ascribed to modification in precipitation processes between the NFC and LCC. Right now, it is not possible to preclude the influence of the particular shape of NFC or the biological influence. REEs are not fractionated in NFC, contrary to LCC. Thus, NFC does not precipitate from a percolation solution circulating downward the soil, which should lead to the fractionation of the REEs. As explained above, fungi, are able to dissolve and translocate nutrients. This kind of processes allows releasing elements in the soil solution without fractionation and could explain the particular chemical signature of NFC regarding the REEs.The geochemical approach to investigate the origin of NFC presented in this study does not allow providing direct clues to the fungal origin of NFC, but brings several new insights in the understanding of the formation of such a particular mineral, calcite needles, by precluding definitively their physicochemical origin.RESUMELa calcite en aiguilles (NFC) est l'une des formes les plus ubiquiste de calcite pédogénique.

Generally, so-called control processes are thought to be necessary when we must perform one out of several competing actions. Some examples include performance of a less well-practiced action instead of a well-practiced one (prepotency); learning a new action (novelty); and rapidly switching from one action to another (task-switching). While it certainly is difficult to perform the desired action in these circumstances, it is less clear that a separate set of processes (e.g., control processes) are necessary to explain the observed behavior. Another way to approach the study of control processes is to investigate physiological dependent measures (e.g., electrophysiological or neuroimaging measures). Although these offer another avenue of inquiry into control processes, they have yet to furnish unambiguous evidence that control processes exist. While this might suggest that there are no control processes, it is also possible that our methods are insufficiently sensitive to measure control processes. We have investigated this latter possibility using tasks that are neuroanatomically distinct, though within the same modality (vision). This approach did not yield evidence for a separable set of control processes. However, recent works using a task-switching paradigm in which subjects switch between a visual and an auditory task suggest that switching both task and modality may be importantly different than switching task within a given modality. This may represent a way forward in the study of control processes.
