Starting from the observation that ghosts are strikingly recurrent and prominent figures in late-twentieth African diasporic literature, this dissertation proposes to account for this presence by exploring its various functions. It argues that, beyond the poetic function the ghost performs as metaphor, it also does cultural, theoretical and political work that is significant to the African diaspora in its dealings with issues of history, memory and identity. Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) serves as a guide for introducing the many forms, qualities and significations of the ghost, which are then explored and analyzed in four chapters that look at Fred D'Aguiar's Feeding the Ghosts (1998), Gloria Naylor's Mama Day (1988), Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow (1983) and a selection of novels, short stories and poetry by Michelle Cliff. Moving thematically through these texts, the discussion shifts from history through memory to identity as it examines how the ghost trope allows the writers to revisit sites of trauma; revise historical narratives that are constituted and perpetuated by exclusions and invisibilities; creatively and critically repossess a past marked by violence, dislocation and alienation and reclaim the diasporic culture it contributed to shaping; destabilize and deconstruct the hegemonic, normative categories and boundaries that delimit race or sexuality and envision other, less limited and limiting definitions of identity. These diverse and interrelated concerns are identified and theorized as participating in a project of "re-vision," a critical project that constitutes an epistemological as much as a political gesture. The author-based structure allows for a detailed analysis of the texts and highlights the distinctive shapes the ghost takes and the particular concerns it serves to address in each writer's literary and political project. However, using the ghost as a guide into these texts, taken collectively, also throws into relief new connections between them and sheds light on the complex ways in which the interplay of history, memory and identity positions them as products of and contributions to an African diasporic (literary) culture. If it insists on the cultural specificity of African diasporic ghosts, tracing its origins to African cultures and spiritualities, the argument also follows gothic studies' common view that ghosts in literary and cultural productions-like other related figures of the living dead-respond to particular conditions and anxieties. Considering the historical and political context in which the texts under study were produced, the dissertation makes connections between the ghosts in them and African diasporic people's disillusionment with the broken promises of the civil rights movement in the United States and of postcolonial independence in the Caribbean. It reads the texts' theoretical concerns and narrative qualities alongside the contestation of traditional historiography by black and postcolonial studies as well as the broader challenge to conventional notions such as truth, reality, meaning, power or identity by poststructuralism, postcolonialism or queer theory. Drawing on these various theoretical approaches and critical tools to elucidate the ghost's deconstructive power for African diasporic writers' concerns, this work ultimately offers a contribution to "speciality studies," which is currently emerging as a new field of scholarship in cultural theory.

Anomalous activations of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and posterior cerebral areas have been reported in previous studies of working memory in schizophrenia. Several interpretations have been reported: e.g., neural inefficiency, the use of different strategies and differences in the functional organization of the cerebral cortex. To better understand these abnormal activations, we investigated the cerebral bases of a working memory component process, namely refreshing (i.e., thinking briefly of a just-activated representation). Fifteen patients with schizophrenia and 15 control subjects participated in this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study. Participants were told that whenever they saw a word on the screen, they had to read it silently to themselves (read and repeat conditions), and when they saw a dot, they had to think of the just-previous word (refresh condition). The refresh condition (in comparison with the read condition) was associated with significantly increased activation in the left inferior frontal gyrus and significantly decreased connectivity within the prefrontal cortex and between the prefrontal and parietal cortices in patients with schizophrenia in comparison with control subjects. These results suggest that prefrontal dysfunctions in schizophrenia might be related to a defective ability to initiate (rather than to execute) specific cognitive processes.

Abstract :This article examines the interplay of text and image in The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1977), translated by Angela Carter and illustrated by Martin Ware, as a form of intersemiotic dialogue that sheds new light on Carter's work. It argues that Ware's highly original artwork based on the translation not only calls into question the association of fairy tales with children's literature (which still characterizes Carter's translation), but also captures an essential if heretofore neglected aspect of Carter's creative process, namely the dynamics between translating, illustrating and rewriting classic tales. Several elements from Ware's illustrations are indeed taken up and elaborated on in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (1979), the collection of "stories about fairy stories" that made Carter famous. These include visual details and strategies that she transposed to the realm of writing, giving rise to reflections on the relation between visuality and textuality.RésuméCet article considère l'interaction du texte et de l'image dans les contes de Perrault traduits par Angela Carter et illustrés par Martin Ware (The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault, 1977) comme une forme de dialogue intersémiotique particulièrement productif. Il démontre que les illustrations originales de Ware ne mettent pas seulement en question l'assimilation des contes à la littérature de jeunesse (qui est encore la perspective adoptée par la traductrice dans ce livre), mais permettent aussi de saisir un aspect essentiel bien que jusque là ignoré du procession de création dans l'oeuvre de Carter, à savoir la dynamique qui lie la traduction, l'illustration et la réécriture des contes classiques. Plusieurs éléments des illustrations de Ware sont ainsi repris et élaborés dans The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (1979), la collection de "stories about fairy stories" qui rendit Carter célèbre. La transposition de détails et de stratégies visuelles dans l'écriture donnent ainsi l'occasion de réflexions sur les rapports entre la visualité et la textualité.

This article summarizes current concepts of the working memory with regard to its role within emotional coping strategies. In particular, it focuses on the fact that the limited capacity of the working memory to process now-relevant information can be turned into an advantage, when the individual is occupied by dealing with unpleasant emotion. Based on a phenomenon known as dual-task interference (DTI), this emotion can be chased by intense arousal due to clearly identifiable external stressors. Thus, risk perception might be used as a 'DTI inductor' that allows avoidance of unpleasant emotion. Successful mastery of risk adds a highly relevant dopaminergic component to the overall experience. The resulting mechanism of implicit learning may contribute to the development of a behavioural addiction. Besides its putative effects in the development of a behavioural addiction, the use of DTI might be of a more general interest for the clinical practice, especially in the field of psychotherapy. © 2013 S. Abstract Working memory has been defined as the ability to maintain and manipulate on-line a limited amount of information. A large number of studies have investigated visuospatial working memory in schizophrenia. However, today, the available data concerning the functioning of these processes in schizophrenia are largely controversial. These inconclusive results are due to incomplete knowledge on processes involved in visuospatial working memory tasks. Recent studies suggest that visuospatial working memory processes may be divided into an active monitoring and a storing components. Furthermore, it has been shown that visuospatial working memory processes are strongly interconnected with early encoding processes (perceptual organization). In our view, the two working memory components, and the relationship that they entertain with early encoding processes, may be investigated using dynamic and static visuospatial stimuli in a working memory paradigm. In this thesis we aim at comparing dynamic and static visuospatial working memory processes in patients with schizophrenia and first-episode of psychosis patients. This analysis may clarify the functioning of visuospatial working memory and the dysfunction of these processes in schizophrenia. Our results are in accord with the hypothesis of two visuospatial working memory subcomponents. Dynamic, rather than static, stimuli are strongly involved in the visuospatial working memory encoding process. Indeed, the results are congruent with the idea that static stimuli may be strongly encoded by parallel perceptual organization processes. Patients with schizophrenia show important deficits in both working memory and perceptual organization encoding processes. In contrast, perceptual organization processes seem spared in firstepisodepsychosis patients. Considering our findings, we propose a model to explain the degradation of visuospatial processes involved in a working memory task during schizophrenia. Résumé: La mémoire de travail est définie comme la capacité à maintenir et manipuler « on-line » un nombre limité d'informations pour une courte période de temps (de l'ordre de quelques dizaines de secondes). Un grand nombre d'études a montré que les processus de mémoire de travail visuo spatiale peuvent être affectés dans la schizophrénie. Malgré cela, les données concernant les déficits de ces processus chez des patients qui souffrent de schizophrénie sont contradictoires. La difficulté de comprendre la nature des déficits de mémoire de travail visuospatiale dans la schizophrénie est en grande partie imputable aux connaissances encore lacunaires sur le fonctionnement de ces processus dans un état non pathologique. Dans cette thèse, on cherche à élucider le fonctionnement des processus de mémoire de travail visuospatiale. Pour cela, on a créé un nouveau paradigme qui sollicite ce type de mémoire. Dans ce paradigme, on présente des stimuli dynamiques et statiques. Après un court délai, le sujet doit reconnaître le stimulus qu'il a visualisé parmi six possibilités. Sur la base de récentes études neurophysiologiques, neuroanatomiques et psychologiques, nous avançons l'hypothèse que l'encodage de stimuli dynamiques et statiques repose sur deux processus distincts de mémoire de travail : un processus d'organisation qui manipule les informations sensorielles et un processus dé stockage qui est responsable du maintien de l'information au cours de la manipulation. Ces processus sont en relation directe avec les processus responsables d'une organisation de l'information à un niveau précoce du traitement visuel. Les études présentées dans cette thèse ont pour but de vérifier la pertinence de la distinction entre les processus de mémoire de travail visuospatiale, selon la modalité «dynamique » ou «statique ». L'investigation des processus dynamiques et statiques de mémoire de travail dans la schizophrénie présente deux avantages principaux. Premièrement, 1a pathologie pourrait permettre de mettre en évidence, par les dysfonctionnements qu'elle présente, la pertinence des hypothèses sur le fonctionnement des processus de mémoire de travail visuospatiale et de leur interaction avec les processus sensoriels. Deuxièmement, ces investigations rendent possible une analyse des dysfonctions des différents processus dans la schizophrénie. Dans cette thèse, on analyse aussi les processus de mémoire de travail «dynamiques » et «statiques » chez des sujets dans une phase initiale de la psychose. Les résultats de cette étude permettent de faire une comparaison avec ceux obtenus avec des patients qui souffrent de schizophrénie. Cette comparaison peut apporter des informations intéressantes sur l'évolution des dysfonctions dans les processus impliqués dans les fonctions de mémoire de travail visuospatiale au cours de la schizophrénie. Les résultats obtenus dans les différentes études sont cohérents avec l'hypothèse d'une implication différente des processus d'organisation de la mémoire de travail sur des stimuli dynamiques et statiques. -Nos résultats montrent que les processus de mémoire de travail responsables de l'organisation (manipulation active) des informations est déficitaire dans la schizophrénie. Ce déficit semble jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la dégradation des processus visuospatiaux au cours de la schizophrénie.

The mental ability to take the perspective of another person may depend on one's own bodily awareness and experience. In the present study, the former was defined as having a history of an eating disorder, and the latter variable was defined as formal experience with dance. The study used a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design in which reaction times in two mental perspective taking tasks were compared between female dancers and non-dancers with and without a former eating disorder. Participants were asked to imagine two perspectives: i) the position of front-facing and back-facing figures (3rd person perspective taking task) and ii) that these same figures are a self reflection in a mirror (1st person perspective taking task). In both tasks, a particular hand was indicated in the presented figures, and the participants had to decide whether the hand represented their own left or right hand. Overall, responses were slower for front-facing than back-facing figures in the 3rd person perspective taking task, and for back-facing than front-facing figures in the 1st person perspective taking task. Importantly, having a former history of an eating disorder related to a decreased performance in the 3rd person perspective taking task, but only in participants without dance experience. Results from an additional control group (a history of exercise but no dance experience) indicated that dance is particularly beneficial for mental bodily perspective taking. Dance experience, more so than exercise in general, can benefit 3rd person or extrapersonal perspective taking, supporting the favourable impact this exercise has on own body processing

We report the case of a young break-dancer presenting with hammer syndrome. This syndrome has been correlated with many professional and recreational activities but this is, to our knowledge, the first description of hammer syndrome caused by break-dancing. The etiology, diagnosis and treatment modalities of this rare syndrome are considered.

The generation of an antigen-specific T-lymphocyte response is a complex multi-step process. Upon T-cell receptor-mediated recognition of antigen presented by activated dendritic cells, naive T-lymphocytes enter a program of proliferation and differentiation, during the course of which they acquire effector functions and may ultimately become memory T-cells. A major goal of modern immunology is to precisely identify and characterize effector and memory T-cell subpopulations that may be most efficient in disease protection. Sensitive methods are required to address these questions in exceedingly low numbers of antigen-specific lymphocytes recovered from clinical samples, and not manipulated in vitro. We have developed new techniques to dissect immune responses against viral or tumor antigens. These allow the isolation of various subsets of antigen-specific T-cells (with major histocompatibility complex [MHC]-peptide multimers and five-color FACS sorting) and the monitoring of gene expression in individual cells (by five-cell reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction [RT-PCR]). We can also follow their proliferative life history by flow-fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of average telomere length. Recently, using these tools, we have identified subpopulations of CD8+ T-lymphocytes with distinct proliferative history and partial effector-like properties. Our data suggest that these subsets descend from recently activated T-cells and are committed to become differentiated effector T-lymphocytes.

In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Chattopadhyay et al (2010) describe a surprising new mechanism for how viral dsRNA detection by the RIG-I/MAVS signalling complex can initiate apoptosis. Independent of its transcriptional function, a pool of interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-3 activated downstream of MAVS can bind to and activate cytosolic Bax, resulting in Bax translocation to the mitochondria and initiation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway.
