The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of high pressure processing (HPP) on consumer acceptance for chilled ready meals manufactured using a low-value beef cut. Three hundred consumers evaluated chilled ready meals subjected to 4 pressure treatments and a non-treated control monadically on a 9-point scale for liking for beef tenderness and juiciness, overall flavour, overall liking, and purchase intent. Data were also collected on consumers' food consumption patterns, their attitudes towards food by means of the reduced food-related lifestyle (FRL) instrument, and socio-demographics. The results indicated that a pressure treatment of 200 MPa was acceptable to most consumers. K-means cluster analysis identified 4 consumer groups with similar preferences, and the optimal pressure treatments acceptable to specific consumer groups were identified for those firms that would wish to target attitudinally differentiated consumer segments

The purpose of this paper is to show the perceptions of the academic staff of classical languages (ancient Greek and Latin) concerning use of online activities during their courses. The study was carried out in three countries: Greece (three major Universities), Spain (University of Barcelona) and the United States (University of California, Berkeley) with the participation of thirty-three academic instructors. Depending on the level of use and acceptance of the ICT and following G. Moores classification, we separated the participating academics in three groups: the conservatives, the mainstream and the early adopters. The fact that the smallest group is the third clearly shows the necessity for teachers preparation and training before introducing innovative projects in the classroom. Since the starting point for the application of innovation in the classroom is the teacher, policy makers should focus on helping them become conscious of changes in teaching methods and include their opinion during the design of innovative projects.

We study the assignment of indivisible objects with quotas (houses, jobs, or offices) to a set of agents (students, job applicants, or professors). Each agent receives at most one object and monetary compensations are not possible. We characterize efficient priority rules by efficiency, strategy-proofness, and renegotiation-proofness. Such a rule respects an acyclical priority structure and the allocations can be determined using the deferred acceptance algorithm.

Procedural fairness plays a prominent role in the social discourse concerning the marketplace in particular, and social institutions in general. Random procedures are a simple case, and they have found application in several important social allocation decisions. We investigate random procedures in the laboratory. We find that an unbiased random procedure is an acceptable substitute for an unbiased allocation: similar patterns of acceptance and rejection result when either is inserted as a feasible proposal in a sequential battle-of-the-sexes. We also find that unbiasedness, known to be a crucial characteristic of allocation fairness, is important to procedural fairness: in the context of a random offer game, a biased outcome is more readily accepted when chosen by an unbiased random draw than by one that is biased. Procedural fairness is conceptually different than allocation fairness or attribution-based behavior, and none of the current models of fairness and reciprocity captures our results. Post hoc extension of one of these models (ERC) suggests that a deeper understanding of procedural fairness requires further investigation of competing fairness norms.

Los dficits y sesgos tanto cognitivos como afectivos han sido fuente creciente de inters en el mbito de la Neurocincia de los Trastornos Mentales. En este proyecto, que se inicia en 2004 y finaliza a finales de 2008, se han estudiado los siguientes Trastornos Mentales: Juego Patolgico (JP), Trastornos de la Conducta Alimentaria (TCA) y Trastornos Depresivos. En esta memoria nos centraremos en resumir parte de los resultados obtenidos en un estudio sobre JP y toma de decisiones (articulo en revisin y pendiente de aceptacin) y otro de funcionamiento ejecutivo en JP y Bulimia Nerviosa (BN) (artculo en prensa). Resumiento el primer estudio los JP (N=32) muestran un proceso de toma de decisiones sesgado por la bsqueda de recompensa en forma de elevada toma de riesgos en comparacin con Controles Sanos (CS). Tambin se observan dficits en flexibilidad cognitiva pero no en control inhibitorio entre JP y CS. Los resultados descartan miopa conductual para lo toma de decisiones en JP, pero apuntan a un sesgo cognitivo-afectivo, en el que el control de los impulsos jugara un papel relevante, en forma de ilusin de control, para los procesos de toma de decisiones con recompensa inmediata pero con castigo diferido, medidos por una prueba de toma de decisiones (IGT ABCD). En el segundo estudio, basndose en las vulnerabilidadades compartidas descritas entre JP y BN se compar el funcionamiento ejecutivo de mujeres con JP y BN. Tras la administracin del WCST y Stroop y ajustando el anlisis por edad y educacin, las JP mostraron mayor afectacin, en concreto mayor porcentaje de errores perservaritvos, menor nivel de respuestas conceptuales y mayor nmero de ensayos administrados, mientras que el grupo de BN mostr mayor porcentaje de errores no persevarativos. Ambas, mujeres JP y BN mostraron disfuncin ejecutiva en relacin a los CS pero con diferentes correlatos especfcos.

Treball de recerca realitzat per alumnes d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientfic del Jovent l'any 2009. Aquest treball es tracta en la creaci dun projecte empresarial, s a dir, duna planificaci estratgica que afecta a tots els mbits de la empresa al llarg dun perode de temps i que t per objectiu analitzar la viabilitat, examinar els objectius i descobrir els inconvenients del mateix. En concret sha projectat s un hostal low cost. Alhora de comprovar la viabilitat del projecte, shan hagut de realitzar els tests corresponents per saber si tindria xit o no. I tots han demostrat un resultat factible, ja que, encara que van sorgir problemes amb lacceptaci daquest nou estil, concretament en el fet dhaver de compartir habitaci amb altres persones, al poder oferir altres tipus dhabitacions i en el cas de compartir habitaci donar molta seguretat, els anlisis ens han donat uns resultats acceptables. Shan realitzat tamb quadres financers, prstecs, calculat les despeses dinici dempresa i de manteniment, publicitat, despeses de personal, i finalment aquest tamb han donat un resultat de viabilitat positiu.

We study comparative statics of manipulations by women in the men-proposing deferred acceptance mechanism in the two-sided one-to-one marriage market. We prove that if a group of women employs truncation strategies or weakly successfully manipulates, then all other women weakly benefit and all men are weakly harmed. We show that our results do not appropriately generalize to the many-to-one college admissions model.

Per tal de millorar l'aprenentatge, actualment deficitari de les habilitats clniques i dels procediments prctics, la facultat va decidir implementar un laboratori dhabilitats. La Facultat de Medicina ha fet una important inversi per tal dadequar un espai fsic i adquirir diferents materials. En parallel es van identificar quines habilitats havien de ser ensenyats en el laboratori dacord amb les dficits observats prviament. Es va dissenyar un curs optatiu sobre habilitats clniques pels nostres estudiants de medicina i es van seleccionar i entrenar els diferents professors. El curs sha desenvolupat durant els tres ltims anys. S'ha investigat el grau dacceptaci daquesta eina pels estudiants i professors utilitzant diferents tipus denquestes. Ms de 300 estudiants de medicina per any han estat formats en el laboratori en diferents activitats, participant 20 professors i havent-se oferit diferents tallers sobre habilitats clniques i procediments prctics. Pels estudiants el laboratori es una excellent eina per incrementar la seva competncia individual en habilitats clniques i que es necessari estendre-la a tots els estudiants. Pels professors, el laboratori es una eina molt til per millorar lensenyament clnic L'experincia ha estat molt positiva i molt til en el procs de canvi curricular que es desenvolupa actualment a la nostra facultat. La nostra experincia pot servir de model per altres facultats de medicina de lestat.

La finalitat del projecte ha estat desenvolupar un espai virtual teric-prctic per a laprenentatge de la Microbiologia. Aquest espai virtual, basat en l'aprenentatge a travs de problemes, sha anomenat Microbiologia Interactiva i proposa a lalumne les segents rees temtiques: Introducci a les tcniques de la Microbiologia; Estructura i funci de la cl.lula microbiana; Creixement i control microbi; Microbiologia molecular; Fisiologia i metabolisme microbians; Virologia; Ecologia Microbiana; Diversitat microbiana. Per a cada temtica shan definit unes competncies a assolir a travs de la resoluci de problemes terics o prctics. En aquest darrer cas, se li proposa a lalumne que entri en el laboratori virtual per a la resoluci dels casos prctics plantejats. A ms, per a la resoluci dels problemes, lalumne disposa dun seguit de recursos per a cada temtica. Finalment, tamb sinclouen activitats de relaci i dampliaci per tal destimular la discussi, lesperit crtic, el treball en grup i la recerca bibliogrfica. A ms, per tal de facilitar el seu s, el web disposa tamb d'un tutorial. El web Microbiologia Interactiva es va introduir de forma pilat en lensenyament de l'assignatura de Microbiologia de la Llicenciatura de Biologia i de la de Microbiologia I de la llicenciatura de Biotecnologia de la Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona (UAB) durant el curs 2007-08. Al llarg d'aquest curs es va valorar la seva utilitat i acceptaci per part dels alumnes mitjanant enquestes. Els bons resultats obtinguts van aconsellar que aquesta eina fora ja utilitzada en totes les assignatures generals de Microbiologia de les llicenciatures de Biologia, Biotecnologia, Bioqumica, Qumica, Enginyeria Qumica, Cincies Ambientals i Cincia i Tecnologia dels Aliments de la UAB. Actualment el web sest tamb utilitzant amb molt bons resultats a les assignatures de Microbiologia dels nous graus que ofereix la Facultat de Biocincies de la UAB. The Hardy-Weinberg law, formulated about 100 years ago, states that under certainassumptions, the three genotypes AA, AB and BB at a bi-allelic locus are expected to occur inthe proportions p2, 2pq, and q2 respectively, where p is the allele frequency of A, and q = 1-p.There are many statistical tests being used to check whether empirical marker data obeys theHardy-Weinberg principle. Among these are the classical xi-square test (with or withoutcontinuity correction), the likelihood ratio test, Fisher's Exact test, and exact tests in combinationwith Monte Carlo and Markov Chain algorithms. Tests for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE)are numerical in nature, requiring the computation of a test statistic and a p-value.There is however, ample space for the use of graphics in HWE tests, in particular for the ternaryplot. Nowadays, many genetical studies are using genetical markers known as SingleNucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). SNP data comes in the form of counts, but from the countsone typically computes genotype frequencies and allele frequencies. These frequencies satisfythe unit-sum constraint, and their analysis therefore falls within the realm of compositional dataanalysis (Aitchison, 1986). SNPs are usually bi-allelic, which implies that the genotypefrequencies can be adequately represented in a ternary plot. Compositions that are in exactHWE describe a parabola in the ternary plot. Compositions for which HWE cannot be rejected ina statistical test are typically close" to the parabola, whereas compositions that differsignificantly from HWE are far". By rewriting the statistics used to test for HWE in terms ofheterozygote frequencies, acceptance regions for HWE can be obtained that can be depicted inthe ternary plot. This way, compositions can be tested for HWE purely on the basis of theirposition in the ternary plot (Graffelman & Morales, 2008). This leads to nice graphicalrepresentations where large numbers of SNPs can be tested for HWE in a single graph. Severalexamples of graphical tests for HWE (implemented in R software), will be shown, using SNPdata from different human populations

This paper focuses on one of the methods for bandwidth allocation in an ATM network: the convolution approach. The convolution approach permits an accurate study of the system load in statistical terms by accumulated calculations, since probabilistic results of the bandwidth allocation can be obtained. Nevertheless, the convolution approach has a high cost in terms of calculation and storage requirements. This aspect makes real-time calculations difficult, so many authors do not consider this approach. With the aim of reducing the cost we propose to use the multinomial distribution function: the enhanced convolution approach (ECA). This permits direct computation of the associated probabilities of the instantaneous bandwidth requirements and makes a simple deconvolution process possible. The ECA is used in connection acceptance control, and some results are presented

With the aim of reducing the cost in terms of calculation and storage requirements, they propose the use of the multinomial distribution function. This permits direct computation of the associated probabilities of the instantaneous bandwidth requirements. This in turn makes possible a simple deconvolution process. Moreover, under certain conditions additional improvements may be achieved

Se revisan diferentes formas en que la influencia social puede incidir sobre los comportamientosheterosexuales de prevencin de la transmisin del VIH de los jvenes y se presentanlos resultados de algunos trabajos de las autoras, as como de otros investigadores, en que seanalizan dichas relaciones. Se concluye resaltando: 1) la utilidad clnica de la evaluacin de lasexpectativas de autoeficacia para poder intervenir especficamente en aquellas reas en que losjvenes se perciban con menores capacidades para ser preventivos, 2) la relacin observadaentre el uso de preservativo autoinformado y la creencia en su aceptacin por parte de los referentessociales ms cercanos y 3) la conveniencia de que los jvenes posean suficientes habilidadesde comunicacin que les permitan negociar con xito el uso del preservativo y les ayudena compensar posibles influencias sociales en contra de su empleo
