Quantifying urban attractiveness from the distribution and density of digital footprints

In the past, sensors networks in cities have been limited to fixed sensors, embedded in particular locations, under centralised control. Today, new applications can leverage wireless devices and use them as sensors to create aggregated information. In this paper, we show that the emerging patterns unveiled through the analysis of large sets of aggregated digital footprints can provide novel insights into how people experience the city and into some of the drivers behind these emerging patterns. We particularly explore the capacity to quantify the evolution of the attractiveness of urban space with a case study of in the area of the New York City Waterfalls, a public art project of four man-made waterfalls rising from the New York Harbor. Methods to study the impact of an event of this nature are traditionally based on the collection of static information such as surveys and ticket-based people counts, which allow to generate estimates about visitors’ presence in specific areas over time. In contrast, our contribution makes use of the dynamic data that visitors generate, such as the density and distribution of aggregate phone calls and photos taken in different areas of interest and over time. Our analysis provides novel ways to quantify the impact of a public event on the distribution of visitors and on the evolution of the attractiveness of the points of interest in proximity. This information has potential uses for local authorities, researchers, as well as service providers such as mobile network operators.

Auditoria ambiental de l'edifici de l'Àrea de Territori, Medi Ambient, Paisatge i Espai Urbà de l'Ajuntament de Sitges

Aquest projecte realitza una auditoria ambiental de l’edifici de l’Àrea de Territori, Medi Ambient, Paisatge i Espai Urbà de l’Ajuntament de Sitges, com a primer pas per a la implantació d’un sistema de gestió ambiental (SGA), en acord amb el Reglament (CE) nº 761/2001, i la posterior obtenció d’un certificat de gestió i auditories ambientals (EMAS). L’auditoria s’inicia amb la identificació dels aspectes ambientals de l’edifici, mitjançant la recopilació de dades sobre consums energètics i hídrics, la estimació de la generació de residus i enquestes de mobilitat als treballadors. Aquestes dades són utilitzades per determinar els aspectes ambientals significatius i posteriorment, exposar una sèrie de propostes de millora per tal de corregir-los o minimitzar-los, com ara sistemes d’estalvi d’aigua, d’enllumenat, de producció d’electricitat i l’educació ambiental dels treballadors. Per a la implantació d’un SGA en la situació actual de l’edifici, es necessària, entre altres coses, la implantació d’un sistema de registre que arxivi els consums d’aigua, energia i generació de residus, per tal de dur un control de les despeses de cadascun dels vectors. A més, caldrà implementar un Programa de bones pràctiques ambientals en l’oficina per tal de reduir el consum elèctric, d’aigua i generació de residus, i la seva classificació per part dels treballadors.

Violència, religió i la ciutat: els significats de la política liberal dels anys vint i trenta del segle XIX

Estudi realitzat a partir d’una estada a l’Institut Desenvolupat a School of Comparative American Studies adscrit a la University of Warwick, Regne Unit, entre 2011 i 2012. Aquest projecte analitza en primer lloc la mobilització popular del primer liberalisme i la formació de les primeres organitzacions polítiques liberals que es constituïren a partir de les societats secretes i es propagaren a través dels principals centres de sociabilitat liberal: les societats patriòtiques. En segon lloc mitjançant l’estudi de la mobilitat dels liberals entre l’Espanya metropolitana i el virregnat de Nueva Espanya demostra com es dibuixà un nou model polític basat en el federalisme. El tercer aspecte d’anàlisi és com els exiliats catalans a Anglaterra reberen el suport de la Foreign Bible Society perquè havia mantingut contactes des dels primers anys vint amb l’alt clergat espanyol. El darrer aspecte de la recerca abasta l’estudi de l’espai urbà en relació amb les pràctiques polítiques dels ciutadans a partir de l’anàlisi de la formació i ampliació de les places de la ciutat de Barcelona durant la primera meitat del segle XIX.

The concept of public art is a polysemic term, and the dispersion of its meaning is reflected in the different ways of working during the XXth Century. It cross the fields of sculpture, monument, visual arts and urban space, defined from a civic perspective. El concepto de arte público es un término polisémico cuyos significados se reflejan en la diversidad de recursos que podemos hallar en internet. Por lo tanto, la aproximación a dichos recursos requerirá una acotación del propio concepto, que transita entre los ámbitos de la escultura, el monumento, las artes visuales y el espacio urbano entendido desde su vertiente cívica. La aproximación a los contenidos de internet vinculados con el arte público se aborda desde tres áreas temáticas cuyo análisis nos ayudará a organizar un volumen heterogéneo de información. La primera área incide en el papel de los centros de investigación y ayuntamientos en la promoción, inventariado y catalogación de las colecciones de arte en el espacio público. La segunda se centra en aquellos sitios web que son entendidos como fuentes de información y herramientas; los denominados think tanks. La tercera y última destaca la presencia en la red de páginas oficiales dedicadas a autores y obras específicas. The concept of public art is a polysemic term, and the dispersion of its meaning is reflected in the diversity of resources we can find on the web. Therefore, the approach to these resources needs a delimitation of the concept, crossing the fields of Sculpture, Monument, Visual arts and Urban space, defined from a civic perspective. The management of these resources is addressed from three strands, whose analysis will help us to organize a heterogeneous volume of information. The first affects the role of research centers and municipalities in the promotion, inventory and cataloging of collections of art in public spaces. The second focuses on those websites understood as sources of information and resources, the so-called think tanks. Los espacios residenciales de tipo privativo y la construcción de la nueva ciudad: visiones de privatopía

La proliferación de los desarrollos residenciales con acceso restringido y de tipo privativo (condominios, supermanzanas, countries, barrios cerrados, etc.) se presentan en el texto como reflejo, a la vez que resultado, de los nuevos procesos de urbanización. Las características de estos desarrollos reflejan los cambios más generales que se van produciendo en el espacio urbano: la privatización, la fragmentación y la tematización, entendida ésta como la construcción de espacios de simulación. A través del análisis bibliográfico, y de la reflexión sobre unos casos de estudio en la región metropolitana de Nueva York, el trabajo incide sobre las causas (el neoliberalismo, los patrones de consumo global) y las consecuencias de la proliferación de los espacios residenciales de tipo privativo: la fragmentación urbana, la privatización y la introducción de nuevos patrones de segregación.

The Achieved Dreams of a Neighborhood

This article explains the social transformation process initiated at the end of the 1970s within the neighborhood of La Verneda-Sant Martı´ in Barcelona. This process started with the foundation of an adult education center that was organized as a Learning Community (the first one in the world). From the beginning, it was administered for and by the community. It became a space of debate where the demands and dreams of the neighbors converged about transforming their neighborhood along with the recommendations of the international scientific community. Twenty years later, the dreams came true: There have been substantial improvements throughout the urban space, infrastructures, housing, urban thoroughfares, and public highways. The INCLUD-ED European project, using the communicative methodology of research, has thoroughly studied the transformation carried out in the La Verneda-Sant Martı´ Adult School and its neighborhood. INCLUD-ED has identified successful practices within diverse social areas that are transferable to other contexts and contribute to overcoming inequalities and improving the most underprivileged neighborhoods.

Las apropiaciones de la ciudad a la hora de la globalización: las estrategias del capital ruso y chino en el mercado inmobiliario de Barcelona

[spa]Con la internacionalización del mercado inmobiliario de las ciudades, originariamente local, se han generado nuevos flujos de capital que han reforzado a nivel mundial el segundo circuito. Barcelona, por lo menos desde 1992 no ha sido ajena a ello. Los últimos capitales llegados proceden de antiguos países socialistas, especialmente de la República Popular de China y de Rusia, con estrategias distintas de localización, más concentradas las chinas. Las consecuencias de estas nuevas apropiaciones del espacio urbano se sienten en la restricción del acceso al mercado de la vivienda por parte de los ciudadanos y en la formación de una Chinatown de modelo europeo.

Is the influence of quality of life on urban growth non-stationary in space? A case study of Barcelona

There are several determinants that influence household location decisions. More concretely, recent economic literature assigns an increasingly important role to the variables governing quality of life. Nevertheless, the spatial stationarity of the parameters is implicitly assumed in most studies. Here we analyse the role of quality of life in urban economics and test for the spatial stationarity of the relationship between city growth and quality of life.

On the density distribution across space: a probabilistic approach

This paper aims at providing a Bayesian parametric framework to tackle the accessibility problem across space in urban theory. Adopting continuous variables in a probabilistic setting we are able to associate with the distribution density to the Kendall's tau index and replicate the general issues related to the role of proximity in a more general context. In addition, by referring to the Beta and Gamma distribution, we are able to introduce a differentiation feature in each spatial unit without incurring in any a-priori definition of territorial units. We are also providing an empirical application of our theoretical setting to study the density distribution of the population across Massachusetts.

Urban Regeneration. A challenge for Public Art, supposed the start of a trend of critical thought related to the topics of Public Art, Urban Regeneration and Urban Design. This trend agglutinated around the Public Art Observatory that, still today, develops its activities.The book gathers a series of critical proposals organized in the chapters " Art and Design in/for Public Space ", " Forms and Representations of Public Art/Public Space. The Producer/User Dilemma " and " Public Art / Cities in Competition: Strategies, Bridges and Gateways ", with the participation of, among others, Sergi Valera, Ray Smith, Martí Peran, Ian Rawlinson, Chaké Matosian, Enric Pol, J. Hyatt, J. Gingell or T. Bovaird.

Reflexiones sobre el espacio público = Thoughts on Public Space

En este artículo planteamos una aproximación a la idea de espacio público como articulador del conjunto de acontecimientos que intervienen en la vida de las ciudades. Entendemos este fenómeno como una red poliédrica y multidimensional, cuyo estudio pasa por el análisis de diversas problemáticas: la identificación de los límites entre espacio público y esfera pública; la conformación del espacio público construido; la aproximación teórica al fenómeno desde la contemporaneidad; la dimensión social del espacio público; y finalmente la perspectiva de la gestión de las ciudades. Todas estas dimensiones expresan una mirada crítica del objeto i ponen en valor niveles de trabajo interdisciplinar y multiescala, fundamentales para entender e intervenir en el espacio público de la ciudad contemporánea.

Public Art, strategies for the regeneration of public space
