An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is a non-piloted airplane designed to operate in dangerous and repetitive situations. With the advent of UAV's civil applications, UAVs are emerging as a valid option in commercial scenarios. If it must be economically viable, the same platform should implement avariety of missions with little reconguration time and overhead.This paper presents a middleware-based architecture specially suited to operate as a exible payload and mission controller in a UAV. The system is composed of low-costcomputing devices connected by network. The functionality is divided into reusable services distributed over a number ofnodes with a middleware managing their lifecycle and communication.Some research has been done in this area; yetit is mainly focused on the control domain and in its realtime operation. Our proposal differs in that we address the implementation of adaptable and reconfigurable unmannedmissions in low-cost and low-resources hardware.

This paper presents an automatic vision-based system for UUV station keeping. The vehicle is equipped with a down-looking camera, which provides images of the sea-floor. The station keeping system is based on a feature-based motion detection algorithm, which exploits standard correlation and explicit textural analysis to solve the correspondence problem. A visual map of the area surveyed by the vehicle is constructed to increase the flexibility of the system, allowing the vehicle to position itself when it has lost the reference image. The testing platform is the URIS underwater vehicle. Experimental results demonstrating the behavior of the system on a real environment are presented

Informe de investigación elaborado a partir de una estancia en el Laboratorio de Diseño Computacional en Aeroespacial en el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Estados Unidos, entre noviembre de 2006 y agosto de 2007. La aerodinámica es una rama de la dinámica de fluidos referida al estudio de los movimientos de los líquidos o gases, cuya meta principal es predecir las fuerzas aerodinámicas en un avión o cualquier tipo de vehículo, incluyendo los automóviles. Las ecuaciones de Navier-Stokes representan un estado dinámico del equilibrio de las fuerzas que actúan en cualquier región dada del fluido. Son uno de los sistemas de ecuaciones más útiles porque describen la física de una gran cantidad de fenómenos como corrientes del océano, flujos alrededor de una superficie de sustentación, etc. En el contexto de una tesis doctoral, se está estudiando un flujo viscoso e incompresible, solucionando las ecuaciones de Navier- Stokes incompresibles de una manera eficiente. Durante la estancia en el MIT, se ha utilizado un método de Galerkin discontinuo para solucionar las ecuaciones de Navier-Stokes incompresibles usando, o bien un parámetro de penalti para asegurar la continuidad de los flujos entre elementos, o bien un método de Galerkin discontinuo compacto. Ambos métodos han dado buenos resultados y varios ejemplos numéricos se han simulado para validar el buen comportamiento de los métodos desarrollados. También se han estudiado elementos particulares, los elementos de Raviart y Thomas, que se podrían utilizar en una formulación mixta para obtener un algoritmo eficiente para solucionar problemas numéricos complejos.

La iniciativa ATLANTIDA engloba numerosos estudios de ingeniería con el objetivo de reformar el actual sistema de gestión del tráfico aéreo. Dentro de estos estudios se encuentran diversas investigaciones en el campo de las comunicaciones móviles. La gran variabilidad del entorno aeronáutico promueve el estudio de sistemas de comunicaciones móviles capaces de funcionar en este tipo de entorno. Este proyecto propone un sistema de comunicaciones WiMAX en un entorno aeronáutico con aviones no tripulados utilizando la modulación OFDM.

El entorno aéreo es, a día de hoy, uno de los escenarios más complicados a la hora de establecer enlaces de comunicación fiables. Esto es debido, principalmente, a las altas velocidades a las que circulan los aviones, que propician una gran degradación del rendimiento des sistema si no se estima de forma continua el canal. Además el entorno aéreo es susceptible a sufrir muchos otros efectos que provocan la degradación de la señal, como la difracción, la reflexión, etc. Por este motivo en este proyecto se hace un estudio de dos escenarios típicos de vuelo: arrival (aterrizaje) y on route (vuelo en ruta). En el escenario on route los aviones circulan a más de el doble de velocidad que en el escenario arrival, de esta manera se podrá ver el efecto de sufrir un doppler mayor. Para realizar el estudio se utiliza un sistema multiportadora con solapamiento de subcanales, OFDM, y se toman inicialmente parámetros típicos de la tecnología WiMAX, que se variarán con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento del sistema.

We describe the relation between two characterizations of conjugacy in groups of piecewise-linear homeomorphisms, discovered by Brin and Squier in [2] and Kassabov and Matucci in [5]. Thanks to the interplay between the techniques, we produce a simplified point of view of conjugacy that allows ua to easily recover centralizers and lends itself to generalization.

Hub congestion is a major problem and a relevant policy issue because it causes delays and many organizational problems at airports that end up implying unpleasant consequences both for air travelers and airlines. In a competitive framework in which carriers choose aircraft size, this paper suggests that airlines schedule too many flights using overly small aircraft, which constitutes a major contributor to congestion. Two- part congestion tolls, accounting for the congestion imposed on other carriers and the congestion imposed on all passengers, are needed to recover e¢ ciency. Finally, we analyze the validity of the results by studying the effects of network size, airport capacity, competition in layover time, and the formation of airline alliances. Satellite remote sensing imagery is used for forestry, conservation and environmental applications, but insufficient spatial resolution, and, in particular, unavailability of images at the precise timing required for a given application, often prevent achieving a fully operational stage. Airborne remote sensing has the advantage of custom-tuned sensors, resolution and timing, but its price prevents using it as a routine technique for the mentioned fields. Some Unmanned Aerial Vehicles might provide a “third way” solution as low-cost techniques for acquiring remotely sensed information, under close control of the end-user, albeit at the expense of lower quality instrumentation and instability. This report evaluates a light remote sensing system based on a remotely-controlled mini-UAV (ATMOS-3) equipped with a color infra-red camera (VEGCAM-1) designed and operated by CATUAV. We conducted a testing mission over a Mediterranean landscape dominated by an evergreen woodland of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) and (Holm) oak (Quercus ilex) in the Montseny National Park (Catalonia, NE Spain). We took advantage of state-of-the-art ortho-rectified digital aerial imagery (acquired by the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya over the area during the previous year) and used it as quality reference. In particular, we paid attention to: 1) Operationality of flight and image acquisition according to a previously defined plan; 2) Radiometric and geometric quality of the images; and 3) Operational use of the images in the context of applications. We conclude that the system has achieved an operational stage regarding flight activities, although with meteorological limits set by wind speed and turbulence. Appropriate landing areas can be sometimes limiting also, but the system is able to land on small and relatively rough terrains such as patches of grassland or short matorral, and we have operated the UAV as far as 7 km from the control unit. Radiometric quality is sufficient for interactive analysis, but probably insufficient for automated processing. A forthcoming camera is supposed to greatly improve radiometric quality and consistency. Conventional GPS positioning through time synchronization provides coarse orientation of the images, with no roll information.

Less attention has been devoted to airlines? decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines ?networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub.

Projecte de recerca elaborat a partir d’una estada a la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Espanya, entre setembre i o desembre del 2007. Actualment la indústria aeroespacial i aeronàutica té com prioritat millorar la fiabilitat de las seves estructures a través del desenvolupament de nous sistemes per a la monitorització i detecció d’impactes. Hi ha diverses tècniques potencialment útils, i la seva aplicabilitat en una situació particular depèn críticament de la mida del defecte que permet l’estructura. Qualsevol defecte canviarà la resposta vibratòria de l’element estructural, així com el transitori de l’ona que es propaga per l’estructura elàstica. Correlacionar aquests canvis, que poden ser detectats experimentalment amb l’ocurrència del defecte, la seva localització i quantificació, és un problema molt complex. Aquest treball explora l’ús de l'Anàlisis de Components Principals (Principal Component Analysis - PCA-) basat en la formulació dels estadístics T2 i Q per tal de detectar i distingir els defectes a l'estructura, tot correlacionant els seus canvis a la resposta vibratòria. L’estructura utilitzada per l’estudi és l’ala d’una turbina d’un avió comercial. Aquesta ala s’excita en un extrem utilitzant un vibrador, i a la qual s'han adherit set sensors PZT a la superfície. S'aplica un senyal conegut i s'analitzen les respostes. Es construeix un model PCA utilitzant dades de l’estructura sense defecte. Per tal de provar el model, s'adhereix un tros d’alumini en quatre posicions diferents. Les dades dels assajos de l'estructura amb defecte es projecten sobre el model. Les components principals i les distàncies de Q-residual i T2-Hotelling s'utilitzaran per a l'anàlisi de les incidències. Q-residual indica com de bé s'adiu cadascuna de les mostres al model PCA, ja que és una mesura de la diferència, o residu, entre la mostra i la seva projecció sobre les components principals retingudes en el model. La distància T2-Hotelling és una mesura de la variació de cada mostra dins del model PCA, o el que vindria a ser el mateix, la distància al centre del model PCA.
