Periodic orbits of the planar collision restricted 3-body problem

Using the continuation method we prove that the circular and the elliptic symmetric periodic orbits of the planar rotating Kepler problem can be continued into periodic orbits of the planar collision restricted 3–body problem. Additionally, we also continue to this restricted problem the so called “comets orbits”.

The paper is devoted to the study of a type of differential systems which appear usually in the study of some Hamiltonian systems with 2 degrees of freedom. We prove the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits on each negative energy level. All these periodic orbits pass near the total collision. Finally we apply these results to study the existence of periodic orbits in the charged collinear 3–body problem.

On the stability of periodic orbits in Rn

We consider an autonomous differential system in Rn with a periodic orbit and we give a new method for computing the characteristic multipliers associated to it. Our method works when the periodic orbit is given by the transversal intersection of n ¡ 1 codimension one hypersurfaces and is an alternative to the use of the first order variational equations. We apply it to study the stability of the periodic orbits in several examples, including a periodic solution found by Steklov studying the rigid body dynamics.

The existence of periodic solutions of a two dimensional Lattice

We consider a two dimensional lattice coupled with nearest neighbor interaction potential of power type. The existence of infinite many periodic solutions is shown by using minimax methods.

Estudi de la bassa de l'institut com un ecosistema

Treball de recerca realitzat per un alumne d'ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit cientí­fic del Jovent l'any 2009. L'IES Sant Andreu té una bassa que fa tres anys es va omplir i que s'ha anat poblant de vegetals aquàtics provinents de Banyoles i altres basses naturals a part de la colonització natural pròpia de qualsevol ecosistema. L'estudi de la bassa com un ecosistema és un tema molt interessant ja que es fonamenta bàsicament en l'observació. El treball està estructurat en dues parts. La primera part s'encarrega de l'estudi de les característiques de l'aigua, aquesta part del treball és més experimental. La segona part consisteix en l'observació dels habitants de la bassa. En general el treball tracta de l'ecologia de la bassa de al llarg del semestre Juliol- Desembre 2009. S'han estudiat les característiques físico-químiques de l'aigua i els organismes aquàtics que l'habiten. També s'ha confeccionat un DVD que recull les observacions en viu dels microorganismes més representatius.

Cultural relativism in the Universal Periodic Review of the Human Rights Council

This Working Paper aims to offer an up-to-date list of cultural relativist players and arguments with respect to human rights, constituted by China, Viet Nam, Myanmar, Iran, Pakistan, Yemen, Syria, Malaysia and Cuba. This working paper argues that Indonesia, Iraq, Colombia and Mexico are not in the same cultural relativist group of states maintained by renowned scholars, notably Cristina Cerna and Dianne Otto. As such, apart from this form of cultural relativism based on the respect for the self-determination of indigenous peoples and communities, this working paper exposes two different categories of radical cultural relativism based on revolutionary discourse and/or radical Islamism, as well as targets the credibility on the latter two based on the information facilitated by the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Medical image registration based on random line sampling

One of the key aspects in 3D-image registration is the computation of the joint intensity histogram. We propose a new approach to compute this histogram using uniformly distributed random lines to sample stochastically the overlapping volume between two 3D-images. The intensity values are captured from the lines at evenly spaced positions, taking an initial random offset different for each line. This method provides us with an accurate, robust and fast mutual information-based registration. The interpolation effects are drastically reduced, due to the stochastic nature of the line generation, and the alignment process is also accelerated. The results obtained show a better performance of the introduced method than the classic computation of the joint histogram
