A simple chaotic flow is presented, which when driven by an identical copy of itself, for certain initial conditions, is able to display generalized synchronization instead of identical synchronization. Being that the drive and the response are observed in exactly the same coordinate system, generalized synchronization is demonstrated by means of the auxiliary system approach and by the conditional Lyapunov spectrum. This is interpreted in terms of changes in the structure of the system stationary points, caused by the coupling, which modify its global behavior.

We present results from 50-round market experiments in which firms decide repeatedly both on price and quantity of a completely perishable good. Each firm has capacity to serve the whole market. The stage game does not have an equilibrium in pure strategies. We run experiments for markets with two and three identical firms. Firms tend to cooperate to avoid fights, but when they fight bankruptcies are rather frequent. On average, pricing behavior is closer to that for pure quantity than for pure price competition and price and efficiency levels are higher for two than for three firms. Consumer surplus increases with the number of firms, but unsold production leads to higher efficiency losses with more firms. Over time prices tend to the highest possible one for markets both with two and three firms.

We study the location-inventory model as introduced by Teo et al. (2001) to analyze the impact of consolidation of distribution centers on facility and inventory costs. We extend their result on profitability of consolidation. We associate a cooperative game with each location-inventory situation and prove that this game has a non-empty core for identical and independent demand processes. This illustrates that consolidation does not only lower joint costs (which was shown by Teo et al. (2001)), but it allows for a stable division of the minimal costs as well.

In this paper we explore the effect of bounded rationality on the convergence of individual behavior toward equilibrium. In the context of a Cournot game with a unique and symmetric Nash equilibrium, firms are modeled as adaptive economic agents through a genetic algorithm. Computational experiments show that (1) there is remarkable heterogeneity across identical but boundedly rational agents; (2) such individual heterogeneity is not simply a consequence of the random elements contained in the genetic algorithm; (3) the more rational agents are in terms of memory abilities and pre-play evaluation of strategies, the less heterogeneous they are in their actions. At the limit case of full rationality, the outcome converges to the standard result of uniform individual behavior.

We study the relation between the number of firms and price-cost margins under price competition with uncertainty about competitors' costs. We present results of an experiment in which two, three and four identical firms repeatedly interact in this environment. In line with the theoretical prediction, market prices decrease with the number of firms, but on average stay above marginal costs. Pricing is less aggressive in duopolies than in triopolies and tetrapolies. However, independently from the number of firms, pricing is more aggressive than in the theoretical equilibrium. Both the absolute and the relative surpluses increase with the number of firms. Total surplus is close to the equilibrium level, since enhanced consumer surplus through lower prices is counteracted by occasional displacements of the most efficient firm in production.

It is common to find in experimental data persistent oscillations in the aggregate outcomes and high levels of heterogeneity in individual behavior. Furthermore, it is not unusual to find significant deviations from aggregate Nash equilibrium predictions. In this paper, we employ an evolutionary model with boundedly rational agents to explain these findings. We use data from common property resource experiments (Casari and Plott, 2003). Instead of positing individual-specific utility functions, we model decision makers as selfish and identical. Agent interaction is simulated using an individual learning genetic algorithm, where agents have constraints in their working memory, a limited ability to maximize, and experiment with new strategies. We show that the model replicates most of the patterns that can be found in common property resource experiments.

We study the relation between the number of firms and market power in experimental oligopolies. Price competition under decreasing returns involves a wide interval of pure strategy equilibrium prices. We present results of an experiment in which two, three and four identical firms repeatedly interact in this environment. Less collusion with more firms leads to lower average prices. With more than two firms, the predominant market price is 24. A simple imitation model captures this phenomenon. For the long run, the model predicts that prices converge to the Walrasian outcome, but for the intermediate term the modal price is 24

We study how the heterogeneity of agents affects the extent to which changes in financial incentives can pull a group out of a situation of coordination failure. We focus on the connections between cost asymmetries and leadership. Experimental subjects interact in groups of four in a series of weak-link games. The treatment variable is the distribution of high and low effort cost across subjects. We present data for one, two and three low-cost subjects as well as control sessions with symmetric costs. The overall pattern of coordination improvement is common across treatments. Early coordination improvements depend on the distribution of high and low effort costs across subjects, but these differences disappear with time. We find that initial leadership in overcoming coordination failure is not driven by low-cost subjects but by subjects with the most frequent cost. This conformity effect can be due to a kind of group identity or to the cognitive simplicity of acting with identical others.

Els continguts de la memòria es divideixen en dues parts fonamentals, precedides d’una breu explicació on s’introdueix al lector en el tema; primer s’exposen les bases d’un ressonador simple FBAR, d’on s’obtenen equacions de control vitals, i seguidament es plantegen les bases per a un ressonador apilat SCR, derivades de l’estudi previ d’un ressonador simple. La primera part fonamental del treball es centra en l’anàlisi d’un ressonador SCR. Aquest anàlisi es recolza sobre el punt de vista teòric dels paràmetres imatge, el nostre punt de sortida. Aquesta primera part és la més teòrica: obtenció i aplicació dels paràmetres imatge i obtenció dels elements discrets que conformen el circuit equivalent SCR, una xarxa de dos ports. Posteriorment, s’analitza què succeeix modificant els valors dels elements discrets sense variar determinats paràmetres imatge i finalment, es proposa una aproximació per a controlar determinades especificacions de disseny, com són l’ample de banda de transmissió de la xarxa i el factor de qualitat, en funció de les modificacions dels elements discrets. En la segona part s’analitzen, de forma qualitativa, xarxes compostes per diferents ressonadors apilats connectats en cascada. Aquest segon estudi es divideix en dues subparts. En la primera connectem N ressonadors idèntics, plantegem algunes equacions de control i analitzem les respostes. En la segona, es planteja la connexió de dos (N=2) ressonadors diferents amb freqüències de ressonància properes. Aquest segon anàlisi es també totalment qualitatiu, però ens aporta informació que amb la unió de N ressonadors iguals no aconseguíem. Finalitzant aquesta segona part, es planteja l’optimització dels resultats obtinguts per a N=2, mitjançant estructures N=3 ressonadors.

En aquest projecte, titulat "GenRegion: aplicatiu de generació de màscares per a la codificació d'imatges amb regions d'interès", presentem una aplicació multiplataforma que visualitza imatges PGM i PPM amb un mínim cost de memòria i sobre les quals podrem dibuixar regions d'interès. L'aplicació carregarà només la part de la imatge que podem visualitzar a la pantalla de treball permetent treballar amb imatges de gran tamany. Les regions definides seran accessibles en tot moment, podent modificar-les i esborrar-les. Finalment podrem generar ja sigui una màscara de la imatge actual amb les regions definides o bé una imatge idèntica a l'original però on es visualitzaran les regions definides.

Residential satisfaction is often used as a barometer to assess the performance of public policy and programmes designed to raise individuals' well-being. However, the fact that responses elicited from residents might be biased by subjective, non-observable factors casts doubt on whether these responses can be taken as trustable indicators of the individuals' housing situation. Emotional factors such as aspirations or expectations might affect individuals' cognitions of their true residential situation. To disentangle this puzzle, we investigated whether identical residential attributes can be perceived differently depending on tenure status. Our results indicate that tenure status is crucial not only in determining the level of housing satisfaction, but also regarding how dwellers perceive their housing characteristics. The empirical finding of an inverse U-shaped relationship between per capita income and pollution, the so-called Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), suggests that as countries experience economic growth, environmental deterioration decelerates and thus becomes less of an issue. Focusing on the prime example of carbon emissions, the present article provides a critical review of the new econometric techniques that have questioned the baseline polynomial specification in the EKC literature. We discuss issues related to the functional form, heterogeneity, “spurious” regressions and spatial dependence to address whether and to what extent the EKC can be observed. Despite these new approaches, there is still no clear-cut evidence supporting the existence of the EKC for carbon emissions. It has been recently emphasized that, if individuals have heterogeneous dynamics, estimates of shock persistence based on aggregate data are significatively higher than those derived from its disaggregate counterpart. However, a careful examination of the implications of this statement on the various tools routinely employed to measure persistence is missing in the literature. This paper formally examines this issue. We consider a disaggregate linear model with heterogeneous dynamics and compare the values of several measures of persistence across aggregation levels. Interestingly, we show that the average persistence of aggregate shocks, as measured by the impulse response function (IRF) of the aggregate model or by the average of the individual IRFs, is identical on all horizons. This result remains true even in situations where the units are (short-memory) stationary but the aggregate process is long-memory or even nonstationary. In contrast, other popular persistence measures, such as the sum of the autoregressive coefficients or the largest autoregressive root, tend to be higher the higher the aggregation level. We argue, however, that this should be seen more as an undesirable property of these measures than as evidence of different average persistence across aggregation levels. The results are illustrated in an application using U.S. inflation data.

El objetivo de este estudio se centró en analizar una colección privada de germoplasma de Vitis vinifera L., de 338 cultivares procedentes de 24 países, para caracterizarlas creando una base de datos, utilizando 11 marcadores microsatélites o SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat). Como resultado se encontraron que algunas de las muestras analizadas presentaron un perfil idéntico de SSR, indicando que se trata de una sinonimia (la misma variedad pero con diferente nombre). Se detectaron 293 perfiles únicos. Adicionalmente, 15 pares de variedades presentaron diferencias en un solo locus y otros 7 grupos difieren en 2 loci, lo cual indicaría la alta proximidad genética entre esas variedades, sin llegar a ser la misma. El germoplasma analizado cuenta con una compleja biodiversidad varietal que se debe preservar. El estudio se realizó programando para el primer año la revisión bibliográfica detallada, recolección de las hojas y el inicio de la puesta a punto de la metodología, en el segundo año se completa la puesta a punto de la metodología, se trituran las hojas y se realiza la extraccinón del ADN. El tercer año se emplea para amplificar los fragmentos de ADN por medio de la PCR (reacción en cadena de la polimerasa), obtener la longitud de los fragmentos con un secuenciador ABI PRISM 310, valorar resultados y realizar repeticiones. El último año se analizan los resultados obtenidos, se realizan repeticiones pertinentes y se comienza la redacción de artículos científicos.

The blue swimmer crab is a commercially important species of the tropical Indo-Pacific regions that shows substantial potential as a candidate species for aquaculture. Optimization of larval rearing conditions, including photoperiod, is therefore important to establish a method for the intensive hatchery culture of this species. Newly hatched larvae of Portunuspelagicus in first zoeal stage (ZI) were reared under five photoperiod regimes 0L: 24D, 6L: 18D, 12L: 12D, 18L: 6D, and 24L: 0D (5 replicates per treatment) till they metamorphosed to megalopae (ranged from 8.5 ± 0.3 days (18L: 6D) to 10.8 ± 1.8 days (0L: 24D) at 29 ± 1 °C). Daily, larvae of each treatment were fed an identical diet of mixed rotifer and Artemia nauplii, and the survival and molt to successive stages was monitored. Newly hatched ZI larvae of P. pelagicus could successfully develop to the megalopal stage under all tested photoperiod conditions, but we detected significant differences in survival among treatments (p & 0.05). The constant darkness treatment (0L: 24D) had the lowest (19.2 ± 7.2%, mean ± S.E.) cumulative survival from ZI to the megalopal stage, while the 18L: 6D treatment achieved the highest survival (51.2 ± 23.6%). Similarly, the photoperiod significantly affected zoeal development. Constant darkness led to the longest cumulative zoeal duration (10.8 ± 1.8 days), whereas the 18L: 6D treatment rendered the shortest larval development (8.5 ± 0.3 days). In addition, larvae reared under constant darkness resulted in the smallest megalopae (carapace length = 1.44 ± 0.09 mm) and the lowest dry weight (0.536 ± 0.188 mg). In conclusion, photoperiod significantly affected the survival, development, and growth of P. pelagicus zoeal larvae. Constant darkness led to the lowest larval survival and developmental rate, while a photoperiod regime of 18L: 6D appeared to be the most suitable condition for the rearing of zoeal larvae of P. pelagicus.
