Many organizations suffer poor performance because its members fail to coordinate on efficient patterns of behavior. In previous research, we have shown that financial incentives can be used to find a way out of such performance traps. Here we examine the sensitivity of this result to the ability of people to observe others' choices. Our experiments are set in a corporate environment where subjects' payoffs depend on coordinating at high effort levels; the underlying game being played repeatedly by the employees of an experimental firm is a weak-link game. Treatments vary along two dimensions. First, subjects either start with low financial incentives for coordination, which typically leads to coordination failure, and then are switched to higher incentives or start with high incentives, which typically yield effective coordination, and are switched to low incentives. Many organizations suffer poor performance because individuals within the organization fail to coordinate on efficient patterns of behavior. Using controlled laboratory experiments, we study how financial incentives can be used to find a way out of such performance traps. Our experiments are set in a corporate environment where subjects' payoffs depend on coordinating at high effort levels; the underlying game being played repeatedly by employees is a weak-link game. In an initial phase, the benefits of coordination are low relative to the cost of increased effort. Play in this initial phase typically converges to an inefficient outcome with employees failing to coordinate at high effort levels. The experimental design then explores the effects of varying the financial incentives to coordinate at a higher effort level. One of the most popular options for promoting public transport use is the provision of an integrated and high quality public transport system. This was the strategy adopted by the regional government in Madrid in 1986 and since then public transport patronage has increased by more than 50%. This paper has two objectives. The first is to identify the factors underlying the significant increase in the demand for public transport in Madrid. To do this we estimate an aggregate demand function for bus and underground trips, which allows us to obtain the demand elasticities with respect to the main attributes of public transport services and also to calculate the long-term impact of changes in those explanatory variables on patronage. The second objective is to evaluate the impact on revenue derived from the introduction of the travel card scheme, and to discuss the consequences on revenue of changes in the relative fare levels of different types of ticket without substantially affecting patronage. This latter issue is addressed by estimating a matrix of own and cross-price elasticities for different ticket types.

El propòsit d'aquest treball és analitzar fins a quin punt la millora en l'accessibilitat dels municipis a la xarxa viària d'alta capacitat ha tingut efectes positius en la creació d'establiments industrials. En concret, estudiem les decisions de localització d'establiments industrials a escala local per a 19 sectors manufacturers amb una desagregació de 2 dígits. Aquest treball incorpora variables de gran rellevància (com ara una mesura d'accessibilitat mesurada en temps de desplaçament i els efectes de les inversions viàries) i utilitza tècniques d'anàlisi espacial. Pel que fa a les entrades d'establiments industrials, les dades han estat obtingudes del Registre d'Establiments Industrials de Catalunya (REIC). Els resultats mostren una incidència positiva de les millores en la xarxa viària sobre les decisions de localització de les empreses.

We study how the heterogeneity of agents affects the extent to which changes in financial incentives can pull a group out of a situation of coordination failure. We focus on the connections between cost asymmetries and leadership. Experimental subjects interact in groups of four in a series of weak-link games. The treatment variable is the distribution of high and low effort cost across subjects. We present data for one, two and three low-cost subjects as well as control sessions with symmetric costs. The overall pattern of coordination improvement is common across treatments. Early coordination improvements depend on the distribution of high and low effort costs across subjects, but these differences disappear with time. We find that initial leadership in overcoming coordination failure is not driven by low-cost subjects but by subjects with the most frequent cost. This conformity effect can be due to a kind of group identity or to the cognitive simplicity of acting with identical others.

Variational steepest descent approximation schemes for the modified Patlak-Keller-Segel equation with a logarithmic interaction kernel in any dimension are considered. We prove the convergence of the suitably interpolated in time implicit Euler scheme, defined in terms of the Euclidean Wasserstein distance, associated to this equation for sub-critical masses. As a consequence, we recover the recent result about the global in time existence of weak-solutions to the modified Patlak-Keller-Segel equation for the logarithmic interaction kernel in any dimension in the sub-critical case. Moreover, we show how this method performs numerically in one dimension. In this particular case, this numerical scheme corresponds to a standard implicit Euler method for the pseudo-inverse of the cumulative distribution function. We demonstrate its capabilities to reproduce easily without the need of mesh-refinement the blow-up of solutions for super-critical masses.

Scholars and local planners are increasingly interested in tourism contribution to economic and social development. To this regard, several European cities lead the world rankings on tourist arrivals, and their governments have promoted tourism activity. Mobility is an essential service for tourists visiting large cities, since it is a crucial factor for their comfort. In addition, it facilitates the spread of benefits across the city. The aim of this study is to determine whether city planners respond to this additional urban transport demand pressure by extending supply services. We use an international database of European cities. Our results confirm that tourism intensity is a demand enhancing factor on urban transport. Contrarily, cities do not seem to address this pressure by increasing service supply. This suggests that tourism exerts a positive externality on public transport since it provides additional funding for these services, but it imposes as well external costs on resident users because of congestion given supply constraints.

Suburbanization is changing the urban spatial structure and less monocentric metropolitan regions are becoming the new urban reality. Focused only on centers, most works have studied these spatial changes neglecting the role of transport infrastructure and its related location model, the “accessibility city”, in which employment and population concentrate in low-density settlements and close to transport infrastructure. For the case of Barcelona, we consider this location model and study the population spatial structure between 1991 and 2006. The results reveal a mix between polycentricity and the accessibility city, with movements away from the main centers, but close to the transport infrastructure.

Transport costs in address models of differentiation are usually modeled as separable of the consumption commodity and with a parametric price. However, there are many sectors in an economy where such modeling is not satisfactory either because transportation is supplied under oligopolistic conditions or because there is a difference (loss) between the amount delivered at the point of production and the amount received at the point of consumption. This paper is a first attempt to tackle these issues proposing to study competition in spatial models using an iceberg-like transport cost technology allowing for concave and convex melting functions.

Els riscos greus es poden materialitzar en emergències col·lectives on l’afectació a la població, als béns materials, a les infraestructures i als serveis bàsics pot ser molt intensa i de forma molt ràpida. Quan aquests elements vulnerables se situen molt pròxims al focus de l’emergència es pot dificultar l’actuació del sistema de gestió d’emergències i més concretament no poder aplicar a temps les mesures de protecció i autoprotecció a la població, o bé que aquestes siguin insuficients. La ubicació dels elements vulnerables en relació als potencials focus d’emergència queda definida per la planificació territorial i l’urbanisme. Per tant, una adequada ubicació dels elements vulnerables que faciliti la gestió de les emergències pel que fa a l’aplicació de mesures de protecció i autoprotecció requereix incorporar la prevenció dels riscos greus a la planificació territorial i l’urbanisme. Actualment aquest procés de prevenció es troba en fase embrionària i disgregat entre diversos col·lectius professionals i organismes sectorials de l’àmbit de la seguretat i el risc. Aquest estudi de recerca recull l’estat actual de la qüestió i valora i justifica la importància social i econòmica del problema de la prevenció d’emergències col·lectives. A partir d’aquest punt es proposa que atès el caràcter transversal i aglutinador del servei de protecció civil, a través d’aquest servei es defineixi un sistema i metedologia per incorporar la prevenció del risc als paràmetres que condicionen el plantejament territorial i l’urbanisme. Es proposa que aquest sistema incorpori les visions dels diferents organismes experts amb caràcter sectorial i gestors de riscos greus concrets, i que tingui una estructura i un procés d’implantació similar al model de prevenció d’incendis en edificis, altament implantat i efectiu.
