Report for the scientific sojourn carried out at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art (INHA), France, from 2010 to 2012. It has focused on the analysis and editing of tales of human apparitions from the other world belonging to the Catalan culture or referring to it. We have studied and edited different versions of the process of Esperança Alegre (Lleida, 1500) and the Peregrinació del Venturós Pelegrí. These medieval works have been preserved in sources of the late sixteenth century or later. We have located a manuscript of the Esperança Alegre's tale, unknown to us at the beginning of this research (Biblioteca Nacional de España, ms. 1701), which differs from the version of ms. Baluze 238 of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The scribe of the ms. 1701 adds several paragraphs where considers the case as a diabolical phantasmagoria. About the Venturós Pelegrí, we have tried to establish firm criteria for the classification of many editions from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. We have been looking for printed books in the libràries of the world and we have made several requests for photographic reproductions, in order to classify undated editions by comparing woodcuts and other decorative elements. In the legend of Prince Charles of Viana (1421-1461), the appearances of his ghost are accompanied by rumors of his poisoning and of his sanctity. In addition, we have studied the cycles of masses for the souls in Purgatory linked to the hagiographies of St. Amadour and St. Vincent Ferrer, as well as the appearances described in L'Ànima d’Oliver of Francesc Moner, in the Carmelite chronicles of Father John of St. Joseph (1642-1718) and in some folktales collected from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. All this have allowed us to verify the evolution of certain cultural paradigms since the Middle Ages to the present.

The aim of this article is to prove the real possibility of travelling intellectually to the Platonic image of the cave from different films. In this sense, one can speak of explicit references as in The Conformist by B. Bertolucci or in Shadowlands by R. Attenborough -if one bears in mind the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis- or The Picture of Dorian Gray ¿if one bears in mind the well-known O. Wilde¿s novel-, but, on other occasions, although the Platonic influence cannot be proved, for instance in The Truman Show, A Room with a View or Brideshead Revisited, one can perfectly think of these films in order to guide the contemporary audiences to that Platonic image, since Plato himself affirms that it deals with an image which can be easily applied and, in first place, to his idealistic philosophy.

Desde 1896 hasta 1916, Emilia Pardo Bazán colaboró periódicamente en el semanario barcelonés La ilustración artística con una sección fija titulada «La vida contemporánea». Este trabajo se centra en la crítica teatral que la autora vertía en estas crónicas. Asimismo, al final se recoge un índice temático de aquellas colaboraciones en las que trataba sobre cualquier aspecto relacionado con las artes escénica. Abstract: From 1896 to 1916, Emilia Pardo Bazán collaborated regurarly in the weekly from Barcelona La ilustración artística with a permanent column entitled «La vida contemporánea». This work focuses on the theatrical criticism that the author poured into these chronicles. Also, at the end, I give a thematic index of those collaborations in which it was about any aspect of the performing arts

Les cerimònies i rituals de l'edat mitjana han tingut sempre una imatge romàntica i alhora plena de fantasia. Ens imaginem fàcilment els cavallers de la Taula Rodona i el rei Artús amb l'espasa Excàlibur a la mà. La història de Catalunya ens pot oferir moments semblants: la coronació dels reis de la Corona d'Aragó, amb tota la solemnitat i magnificència que aquestes cerimònies exigeixen. Tenim, per exemple, la descripció que Ramon Muntaner ens ha lliurat, en la seva Crònica, de la coronació del rei Alfons el Benigne (1328), plena de detalls enlluernadors i d'una gran plasticitat. Ara bé, la narració de Muntaner és realment fidel a allò que ha tingut lloc, o més aviat és una eina de propaganda política destinada a glorificar la Corona d'Aragó i a justificar el seu autor?

European studies of famines before the thirteenth century have been based principally on chronicles and especially on information from monastic annals. These sources, which are especially numerous during the so-called Carolingian Cultural Renaissance, offer abundant evidence of a phenomenon scarcely mentioned in other types of sources, including archival sources: the frequency and gravity of crises of food supply in some regions of continental Europe during the central middle ages, an epoch which, being situated between the terrible famines of the carolingian period and the great panademics of the fourteenth century, has been considered a period “without famines.” The object of this article is to shed light on the limitations of medieval catalan chronicle sources for the reconstruction of food-supply crises which affected the catalan counties in the tenth through the thirteenth centuries and illustrate, in contrast, the multiple opportunities offered by sources from the lordly archives. A significant part of these archival sources are connected in a direct and indirect manner to the difficulties of the rural and urban populations during famines and therefore, in a broad sense, can be considered a consequence of these crises.

Las primeras obras historiográficas castellanas que relatan la “Conquista” de América ofrecen una de las mejores vías para comprender los discursos, religiosos y políticos, en torno a la sexualidad europea a fines de la Edad Media, especialmente relevante si analizamos las representaciones de la sodomía y del homoerotismo. A partir de textos de Bernal Díaz del Castillo, Bernardino de Sahagún, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Bartolomé de Las Casas, en este artículo se reflexiona sobre las significaciones de Sodoma (como geografía cultural e ideológica) en el contexto ibérico posterior a la “Reconquista”.

Los siglos del descubrimiento y la conquista parten de una visión providencialista de la historia que incide directamente en el concepto de la naturaleza americana. De este concepto derivan algunas características básicas de la escritura historiográfica de la época. A partir del siglo XVIII desaparece el concepto místico-geográfico que el cristianismo había dado a la geografía. Con respecto a la naturaleza americana, durante el siglo XVIII tanto los naturalistas como los historiadores y los filósofos pretendieron estudiarla partiendo de premisas consideradas más objetivas y como consecuencia de la sistematización del conocimiento. Todo ello repercutirá en el descrédito que sufrirán las crónicas de Indias. Sin embargo, esta nueva manera de leer las crónicas de Indias guarda relación no tan sólo con la búsqueda de formas alternativas de pruebas históricas o el uso de nuevos tipos de pruebas más fidedignas, sino también con determinados intereses políticos y la creación de la leyenda negra.
